    Here's an interesting comparison:
Australia. Essentially untouched by war. A country where politicians can basically spend what they want on Defence. The centre right party usually holds the political high ground when it comes to supporting Defence. The centre left party treads carefully around Defence issues for fear of being tarnished as anti Defence. The country is miles from anywhere and, save for its association with the United States, sits rather anonymously in the world. Australia has a relatively small but highly professional Defence Force sporting the latest in modern technology. The ADF is not left wanting for anything as a small, middle power. Oh. And the personnel are among the highest paid in the world - certainly higher than the US and the UK.
Britain: A country not only ravaged by war but a country that has history of being un prepared for war with almost catastrophic results. It's located within (relatively) easy striking distance of a number of enemies. It's a beacon among western countries. Yet. Successive UK governments of both stripes have suffered little to no political consequences for intentionally running down the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom with the ultimate consequences being the diminishing capability of its 3 services.

As an ex RN aviator I can attest to our fighter pilot capability both RN and RAF.
However, the first time (if you are lucky enough) to go on a swap (essentially serve in the US) you are just blown away by the scale and quality of frankly everything. Equipment, training, logistics, intel, welfare, accommodation etc is just on a scale that we could not conceive of here in the UK.
We do VERY well with the equipment we have (had….been out for 25 years) but our ability to sustain war fighting capability has been degraded massively over the last 20 years.
Even with our much reduced capability, we are short of pilots, technicians, controllers etc.
The knock on effect of this is that training and exercises are being cut due to lack of essential personnel….and is getting worse.
The Tory Govt again and again refused to act on reports from the MoD about the long term impact this will have. Air controllers is a big one. Doesn’t matter how many aircraft etc you have, they ain’t going anywhere without effective air traffic controllers.
We have intelligence gathering and battle field control aircraft grounded atm due to lack of trained personnel.
It’s not just the catastrophic outsourcing of recruitment that’s is the problem….it is a deep seated lack of a strategic plan that understands the need and role of our forces.

It's not just the Tories, it's every government post Falklands.
We couldn't even beat Switzerland these days, and all they have is armed civilians and Swiss army knives.
We don't even spend 2.5% and that includes pensions. Russia currently spends 40% of their GDP.
Most militaries could destroy us over a bank holiday weekend if they were so inclined.

The political of UK have always cut the Armed Forces and forget the primarily due is the defence the UK. The Armed forces should be more thousands of people, vehicles and weapons to defend the country and their allies

USAF has better kit, more air time, and fly more missions.
RAF dont get into the air fast enough or often enough.
But an airforce with so few fast jets can be very picky, and if your not the very best your not going to get a chance.

Why not do a fairer comparison to the French or German Air Forces? Why is it always America? If Britain had a 30 trillion pound deficit with no intention of ever reducing it I'm sure our air force would be just as big as America's!

The good news is we didn't need much of an armed force because of 70+ years of peace in Europe.
Now that time has passed, we simply need to mobilise.
We can not sensably compare to the US. On one Nimitz class carrier, they have more air capability than most countries' airforces. Directly comparable to our own capability. They have 14 active aircraft carriers in service.
Sadly, Americans should be able to defeat anyone they pick a fight with.
It would be foolish to have spent billions on battle ready troops during a sustained peace time.
Russia and China are changing that dynamic.

We have had the best military for centuries and we are the best engineers in the world. That is what built the empire because everyone wanted our technology. All you have to do is look at our colonies. Australia, Canada, China after Hong Kong. We invented flight with the glider, steam trains, air conditioning/refrigeration, Ships, caravans, cars, radar, mobile phones, arms processors, and jet engines. Without us,Thank god we voted and left no other country would have fighter jets because they haven't got the brains to build it. Thank you Mr Whittle
and we had the highest standards in the world until...1972... to be continued

@ObePawnKenobi I'll go through them all 1 by one 1 with you. The Americans steal all of their inventions. You're probably a yanky doodle?
Why don't you find the video, scrapheap challenge, and building an aeroplane. The Brits smashed it and beat the USA and France, who couldn't even get the plane off the ground ;). They're useless engineers. They're great at copying people but not at inventing it out of nowhere.
It's easy shouting nonsense, but where is your evidence? Don't go running away, I want this debate. Mastermind

      @@ObePawnKenobi The First Aeronautical Engineer
Sir George Cayley (1773-1857) built the world's first hand-launched glider in 1804. It was five feet long and was the first example of the configuration of a modern aircraft, with separate systems for lift and control. Cayley deserves to be remembered as the first aeronautical engineer.

Britain. The great inventor. Invent a machine then sit down and have a cup of tea. Meantime, along comes: Germany. The Netherlands, Japan the USA etc., picks up the invention and makes it better while Britain is still sitting down with it's cuppa thinking "job done". Anyone for cricket?😊

Up until recently it was RAF all the way but now we are not promoting the best and going down the road of diversity hires it (standards, quality, capability)will fall off a cliff and britain will become just another country with some planes. The DEI hires have no connection to all the blah blah of the past.
