    If school / college athletics isn't important within the UK communities in which they are based, there will never be the culture that sees a volume of athletes coming through to senior level, and there will never be the commercial interest to make the sport viable.

    Excellent interview. I do disagree on the future of athletics though, having been involved for circa 35 years. For me, athletics is not like other sports, especially league based sports where you can rely on consistent crowds, week after week. It became popular, in my opinion, because it was exclusive and because major champ medals were rare and hard to come by. The IAAF made an huge error, in my opinion, by moving the World Champs from every four years to every two, completely devaluing its importance in the process, and then by following up by doing the same to the European Champs, to the point that the Europeans are now seen as a second tier competition. We need to, in my opinion, have fewer competions, not more, to make athletics more appealing again, not get dragged into these ridiculous fads like Michael Johnson’s track grand-slam or the women’s only comp, especially when equality has existed in athletics for decades. More isn’t always better.

    I think all national federations should be scrapped. World athletics should invite the top 50 or however many they want from the world rankings list. The athlete competes for themselves and not for their country. Athletics is an individual sport, not a team sport!

    Massive sour grapes here. Should have stuck with Rugby, being a standout athlete in Scotland for middle distances is hardly an indication of making athletics your career when compared with the multitude of opportunities in rugby at multiple levels across the world. I enjoyed the interview but there’s a whiff of sour grapes about this. Guy didn’t get out of his heat at the UK Champs and his PB is 1:44 high. Pattison ran 1:42 something the other week in the Diamond league and he finished 5th in that race. Eliot Giles didn’t make the team. Fair enough, they’re taking Jake Wightman in the 800m which is not really his event but he’s a multiple medalist at major games and a World 1500m champion, so it does make sense. On current form Guy wouldn’t get out of his heat at the Olympics so it’s pointless taking him. Sorry to be blunt but that’s how it is, it’s all there in black and white

    • @ferguscrawley95
      @ferguscrawley95 2 дня назад

      Unless you’re: A) a former world-class athlete. B) part of world athletics. I would (politely) argue you simply can’t have the full context for insight to have this opinion - you (and I) are totally ignorant to the lived experience of athletes at this level, and of the impact of politics, ambiguous criteria (it isn’t black and white when world athletics say one thing and UKA say another), and the attitude of ‘there’s no point taking them if they aren’t going to medal’ has on the human being in the middle of it. That attitude isn’t working, financially or competitively, and if neither of those elements work - the logical downstream of this is to wave goodbye to investment into track facilities around the UK, wave goodbye to interest at grass roots level and beyond, and wave goodbye to a broad selection pool. The crux of the issue by my understanding is British athletics feeling they are above world athletics (when performing poorly) - Guy is in the arena, and is one example of many I have seen sharing similar frustrations recently, and (entirely politely) unless you have been yourself too, his experience > your opinion.

      @@ferguscrawley95 with respect, I think you’re blinded by the fact that you’re his friend. He’s 11th in the UK at 800m this year. Eliot Giles is 3rd and he didn’t make the team. Ironically, Guy’s own argument goes against him here because Max Burgin is 9th on the list this year but he made the team because he finished second in the UK champs and had the qualifying time from a previous year. I get your wider point about up and coming athletes and so on, but when you’ve got three slots for a team, some people’s noses are going to be put out of joint. With all respect to Guy, the 800m is highly competitive and his PB is just okay these days. As an older athlete myself it also pains me to say this but at his age it’s doubtful he’s going to get any better. Also, the notion that they take a chance on people and that they might produce something special in the white heat of competition is great, but you need a body of work to back that up. If you picked people that way, then why does Guy get a look in and not one of the seven people who’ve run faster than him this year?

    • @ferguscrawley95
      @ferguscrawley95 2 дня назад

      @@crayontom9687 for context, I’d never met Guy before this - we just followed each other on Instagram. Completely understand your points here - but this isn’t just a ‘this year’ and ‘800m’ only problem it seems, which is the whole reason I reached out to Guy for a chat on it. I think however we analyse this, my overarching takeaway was a real disappointment that a governing body that should be championing the athletes has left a huge amount of individuals despondent, confused, and let down - all the while performing increasingly poorly commercially (and whilst it’s a shame that needs to be such a key component of the conversation, that is the reality for the future of sport in the UK). As an avid sports fan, I’m becoming increasingly despondent myself with the stories I hear from individuals in every sport about the incompetence of their governing body - and we are starting the see the house(s) of cards crumble (WRU, for example), which can only have negative downstream consequences for future participation. Take Guy out of the equation here - despondent athletes and an increasingly poor commercial performance does not logically equate to a positive future. What’s your sport? 800m? If so, as an older athlete, how have you seen the participation/facilities/access/community evolve (or decline?) over the years?

Its easy Just looking at the times and there is so much more behind and if you never done it, you Just can't comprehend what it takes and what is going on behind the scene. We are investing our lives into athletics trying hard to achieve great results to be able to go and compete on the world drage and British Athletics are just playing with us without investing anything (not even a Touchbase phone call). 🎯 Key points for quick navigation: ‍♂️ Distractions are anything that pull you away from what you intended to do, even healthy habits at the wrong time. Blaming tech companies for stealing our focus is a dangerous view. ⏱️ Unlike junk food, tech often offers ways to limit its own use. Tech companies have an incentive to keep users engaged, but not burnt out - just like healthy fast food options wouldn't sell. People stop using products that don't serve them, so tech companies need to offer a positive experience. Seatbelts offer an analogy - a safety feature adopted by car companies before mandated for similar reasons (customer preference for safety). Social media like Facebook is losing ground (especially with younger users) because it's not seen as a positive experience. Nir disagrees with the view that tech companies manipulate us like helpless sheep. Learned helplessness is a danger - feeling like we can't control the situation makes us give up. Traditional media (newspapers, books) are similar to social media - they all compete for our attention. Nir offers a more optimistic outlook - we can learn to use technology effectively, it's a new skill to be developed. Made with HARPA AI
