Live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia 04/20/1998 featuring Gary Cherone (ex Extreme) on vocals
A fan of all 3 versions of Van Halen. Something about this performance that is simply amazing. Ed's solo is so intense. Gary's voice is outstanding.
There's some really good stuff on III, and this is some of it. Their live performances were powerful.
One of Van Halen's GREATEST songs. It'sa crime no one knows it well.
I know right?
no doubt. probably one of the most emotion driven songs they have done.
Love it!!
Truly slept on album!!
Feelin on Balance was another emotional one too
I know it extremely well 😉
One of my favorite songs and solo by EVH!
Hands down the Greatest Guitar Player of All Time, EDDIE VAN HALEN!!! And we had the privilege to see him in our lifetime.
I had the privilege to see him that night live. Was in the audience here in Melbourne 22 years ago.
Still shedding tears over his passing. He is the definition of "Icon". He will be sorely missed. 😣
Amen!!!!!!!!
Agreed. Like being alive when Beethoven wrote and performed his symphonies. They were deemed noise and trash then, but now they will live forever. As will the music of EVH.
My third best guitar player period. Greatly missed brother. Zakk Wylde is One, And Slash And Eddie . Hands down.
I don't care what people say, this is my favorite VH album. Then again they all are. Now that Eddie has passed on, people will start discovering the genius of this album.
what a great comment my friend
Hopefully. I've been saying it's great since 1998.
Beautiful
I was about to say something, but saw your post. I went to the VH concert in Adelaide for this tour. I didnt care about this album so much, however it was a chance for me to be 15ft from an all time idol of mine. RIP Eddie 5150
Very true.
This is a fucking masterpiece. Ed lays it down here like no one else can. VHIII wasn't well received at all but live Cherone was great and the band's playing on this tour was stellar. Ed was a madman. I saw them twice this tour and they kicked ass. Eddie got sick not long after this tour and the reunion with Roth has been a mixed bag, bittersweet. I pretend that 2004 with Hagar never happened. Too bad they didn't continue with Cherone, I think their second album with him would have been fantastic.
Damn! Now THAT was a guitar solo!!!!!!
This is one of Van Halen's best songs and solos. Period. Gives me chills every time.
Their Stairway to Heaven
Oh man! I could feel that solo down deep! One of Eddie's best solos!
Great performance. Say what you want....Gary sang the shit out of those songs.
Gary was actually a hell of a performer. This whole live show was fucking awesome!
Yes he did. 🔥
Fantastic performer. That tour was awesome
One of my favorite EVH solos. He was so expressive/emotive with this one.
How does it get the “feedback” notes ? Is it a special pick up ?
@@asselinpower Yes. He used a Fernandes sustainer in the neck position.
Eddie's solo is mind boggling, a complete mind fuck.....nuff said
100 % accurate my friend
I’m sitting here right now, getting totally mind fucked by this performance!!!
I’m tellin you guys this album is aging like a fine wine! XD
What a voice! And I'm almost in tears watching Eddie play this solo.
Nothing will top that solo, this deserves so much more credit
How people can say anything negative about Gary is beyond me he is a fantastic singer and performer!
I don't think anyone was negative about him just the album and that he was a poor match. Certainly not his fault
For some reason, this is hitting hard tonight. I miss EVH.
Edward performance here is out of this world man!!!!!!
3 never got enough credit. I believe it was actually a great album. just bad timing. But this shit here..wow! I believe Gary did a great job singing . This was the greatest guitar solo from Eddie since 5150. I think Sammy would have killed it on this song but I am a Sammy guy. i think in the end there were some songs on this album that real VH fans very much liked. I hate that the VH brothers want to pretend like it didn't happen now. 3 is kind of a lost art now. Maybe even a cult following.
Very well said, and I agree, wholeheartedly!
Agree. As a lifelong VH since '78, III has 2 of my all time fav songs; From Afar and Year to the Day. I think Eddie and Gary bonded more in the songwriting process than any of the singers, but it just resonates with everyone I guess.
Yeah you said it!! >> musicality the most diverse and open-minded album in they're collection.
He sounded like s*** Gary sharone you sing the crowd I think he's an idiot any Van Halen was the greatest guitar player that ever lived I'm a guitar player but you don't sing to the f****** guitar player man you sing to the audience he's an idiot that's what Gary Sharon is
@@vedodesantis4414 wow..such hate...i hope you are happy in life..life is too short my friend...smile
i think it was the heaviest album since Dave left the band Music was changing again and fans were tired of the drama Album has never got the respect it deserved ..Gary is great singer .
Heaviest since Dave? The last 2 albums with Sammy including Humans Being was heavier than anything with Dave. Hell Me Wise Magic was heaviest of stuff with Dave. Eds Guitar sound kept getting heavier through the years
One of Ed's greatest solos of all time. I am absolutely captivated by the feel and emotion that comes deep from his soul. Simply the greatest rock guitarist of all time.
It's sends chills!
The solo in here is better then the studio version
All this is is Van Halen with another singer. So Good
" Year to the day " we miss you Eddie. 😪💔
This is when you really see the body and the instrument become one. Eddie is speaking through his guitar. Amazing to watch.
One of the best van Halen concerts with his most energetic guitar style.
What an intense, emotion packed performance - just grabs you and won't let go. Bravo. Ed, just wow.
Rest in Peace King Edward
The Greatest Rock and Roll guitarist of all time.
EVH fingers are absolutely possessed. Something else is coming through that man. Just nothing like his playing ever...ferocious
Absolutely criminal to have an ad in the middle of that masterpiece.
Who said that Eddie wasn't as good or better than Jimmy Page ? The guy is the greatest guitar player on the planet. He can play anything with emotion or excitement.
Eddie is better
Eddy got more fantasy and innovation. Page remain an old stone in the temple of rock with a memorable Stairway to heaven but too long song and old blues school.
Both amazing, but Eddie was more modern in the same era.
Plus Eddie didn't steal music from blues musicians and claim it as his own just because it was a different arrangement. The first Zeppelin album is pur plagiarism.
No. Fucking. One.
Also Eddie didn't kidnap a 14 year old for a few years before dumping her for a new underage girl
Jesus that lead was some sick blues from another dimension. Rip king. You are already missed. I wish they had kept Gary. They would’ve put out more records with him. This band was on fire in 1998.
what a freaking awesome song and guitar solo. sad that we will never see it played again live. I feel this was one of eddies best efforts. and Gary never got any credit . he was an awesome front man. I would defineitly pay to see this again
Simply the best most underrated song of all times
Best eddie solo ever. Heart felt, similar to respect the wind. His best
stfu
fu jerk
A Year To The Day... The sad year... The sad day... R.I.P. Eddie... The legend...
RIP Eddie! this perform is part of the best of your own legacy to music history!
I was there in the crowd watching this. Melbourne 1998...Was amazing...
@@thejamesbondshowwithkrazyk4581 memorable!!
that's ridiculous!!!! Edward almost had me at tears and that last solo with Gary......incredible...
I love this.. rip Eddie 10/6/21 a year to the day Eddie laid his guitar down for the last time. :(
For me, it's one of the best tracks Van Halen has ever produced in its history.
This is definitely the "deepest" VH song, both lyrically & musically. Can't help but hear the Zeppelin influence :-)
Ray DeLeon sorry but Jimmy never ever play the solo like that
...and the Van Halen influence, too.
Hendrix and zeppelin
Amen! This is Eddie's Stairway for sure.....
@@igorigolnikov5830 Read his answer dweeb...he never said he could, but merely there's a tinge of Zep influence Ed grabbed and implemented it into this song.
They were a proper band at this point, writing songs and screwing what anyone thought about them. That's bands at their best. Sadly long-time VH fans never took to Gary.
My favorite Eddie guitar album. You're right. Fans pucker up when I mention 111.
You have to give Cherone credit. He had enough talent to create his own songs and to perform songs from both the Roth and Hagar eras. And never let his ego get in the way of singing songs the others wrote.
Gary Cherone sings to the guitar like its a woman. He is awesome with Eddie!!!
Eddie’s guitar playing, imagination, pedal work and tone are second to none, period.
Best solo ever
Un freakin believable !!! Man, that was so emotional...EVH was pouring his soul into this song & solo. He IS THE MASTER!!
As good as Eddie is playing now he really sounded tight on this tour. What a mean tone! Fucking epic.
Always come back to this solo. RIP Eddie!
One year ago today we lost Eddie. I remember thinking of this song a year ago looking ahead to this day and now here we are. A year to the day that he was last “ours,” but he forever will be within our hearts and souls. Great tune from a great musician as well as his compatriots. RIP, Ed.❤️
THIS SONG IS F'KING INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Eddie is amazing, you can feel every note and Cherone totally crushes it.......not your typical VH song which is why it is Cherone's swan song with VH.....
this is eddies darkest period of his life... it shows in everything.. his behavior, his look, his music... but one thing is for sure, this live solo goes to show what a master he was on both guitar, and in music. all the phrasings, the nuances, when to add the effects... hr was always thinking of the music, and he was master at that. gary cherone crushed it here.... what a sound. michael and alex are often ignored, but, they are the core sound that is van halen. the thumping bass, the smashing hi hats... pure VH.
F-ing awesome that was!! Vh3 got a bad rap but I think it kicked ass and I'm a huge VH fan.. Gary did a awesome job 🤘🤘
Sammy always said that VH had their "Stairway To Heaven" song called "Between Us Two". I have a feeling that this is that song redone. This is a great song.
I think it may be......
Except Gary f@#ked it n Sammy never came close
It IS a crime that this song is not more well known...awesome...just awesome...glad that Gary wrote such epic lyrics to Eddies musings
This was the best song performed on this tour! From the intro to the amazingly solo....in Auburn Hills he nailed it so good. Best song on VH3 besides the first two singles, as I love Fire in the Hole and Without you.....but for feel......this song has it, and shows Ed’s Jazzy influences and blues! Drips with feel from start to finish!
I couldn't agree more. Great playing, intelligent lyrics, sophisticated and different songs. They also never sounded more like Led Zeppelin (in a good way) than on this song, but arguably better
at 7:53 you can feel the pain coming through that guitar.theres jimi hendrix and eddie van halen then everybody else.Alot of guitar players never site him as an influence but thats because they couldnt play his stuff the same way he does.
john fournier did you see mine....greatest halen solo ever!!!
If this song and especially Ed's solo doesn't move you to tears, you probably aren't human. Holy smokes.
fack what a tune!! for those about rock !
Van halenⅢはもっと評価されるべきですよ。
本当にすごい!
You know I really don't get y people didn't dig van halen 3.this album was not that bad especially Eddie's guitar work on it. I think may look back on this one day and say hey you know van halen 3 was actually good. And if you ever realize out of the three singers all of them are great especially Sammy. But gery can do both eras as of where Dave and Sammy really I mean honestly can only do their own. Sammy does good doing Dave era van halen. But let's face it we'd rather hear Dave sings his era. And Dave just wouldn't be able too do Sammy's stuff at all. But Gary cherone can do both and do really bang up job on both Sam and Dave era van halen
I held this same opinion at age 13, in 1998. I feel the same way at age 34, in 2019. This holds up!
@@mattmunro3754 Holds true today, R.I.P Eddie Van Halen!
If only Ed had kept moving in this direction. But, the fans wouldn't let him. Sad.
So good. I remember being 16 and wanting to go to this concert but couldn't get there. Didn't know it was recorded live so its great to see now. This is probably my fav EVH solo. 3 is underrated.
I'm an old school Van Halen fan but I loved this album!!! Brilliant lyrics and Eddie was incredible as usual.... RIP Eddie... thank you for a lifetime of memories!!
This album is awesome and this live version is epic!!
They looked like they were having so much fun playing together!
Epic. Eddie was amazing...Gary, Mikey and Alex...all of it. Intense. 🙏
So frickin amazing !!! The more I listen to it the more I find it just even better from the last time I listened to it !!!
A titan of a song - Long Live The King!
This album and partnership was doomed from the start, but this has some of the most original work from EVH on it. I saw this tour at Jones Beach, 16th row, and the crowd was just stale and lost, they had felt they lost their band. Tons of people walked out. I remember seeing Mike sing lead on CVH, and I thought it was a very good show. I still play this album with great regularity.
This incredible tune will be more renown one day.
best song on vh3, bought that album when i was 10 years old and back then i thought it sucked, now i think its pretty good. Some of eddies best playing
Gary was awesome.
This, in my opinion is the best work Eddie has ever done ;-)
RIP Eddie, you will never know how very loved you are.
One of the best solos he’s done in a song. The most underrated VH albums
I loved this performance! Yep I was there and this song blew my mind! VH at their best!
Saw them at Madison Garry and Eddie was unbelievably awesome!
This was bigger than any other bands performance....a 6/8 waltz in timing, that doesn't stay 6/8. Absolutely love this masterpiece.❤
That solo was fucking incredible
Such a Gr8 Song that Most Van Halen Fans do not know......A Very Emotional Song and a Fantastic Live Performance of it on This Tour, which was probably the only time Van Halen did it....Eddie's Solo is SPECTACULAR!!!!..We were even more IN AWE of Eddie in Brissy after this Solo and The EDDIE, EDDIE, EDDIE chant kept going big-time.....I'm sure Alex, Mikey and Gary wud remember the Audience Response to this Song....It was Incredible!!!!...Cheers from Damo.
Wow Edward Van Halen at his best!! He is a beast
I love it at 4:27 when it's just Ed Alex and Mike. Boy that sounds great!!!!
A moment in time..sublime!
The sad thing is that there are some amazing VH songs with Sammy and some incredible songs like this that we will never get to hear live again with DLR as singer.
What soul man… I got goosebumps like a bitch.. Eddie Van Halen I love what you gave us, may you rest in eternal piece my idol, my life long inspiration, my friend.. 🙏🏼
Got to see this done live ...amazing guitar work...
A year to the day today 💔
Such a great tune. Its a crime people write off this album
Beautiful. When a song moves you then you know it’s beyond great. I am in awe.
Never heard this song before I dig it that solo was amazing so tasty
We SO MUCH need a proper live album & HD video from this tour.
This tour was magic
That solo tho.....
This is a great song and that should of got more credit than it did and such awesome guitar work from Edward. He put alot of heart and soul into it. He was such a talent. So sad hes gone but his music will never die.
Gary, live, had such a stage presence. He was the best fit for VH. Awesome song wrighter. VH III was a very deep album, when many expected something like 5150. VH III shows edd at his best in guitar playing (almost like a guitar clinic), Michael Anthony's bass playing is superb, and Alex showed some real complex drumming. Then comes Gary with his skilled voice. It's an album to listen to many times.
Best riff EVER!
Simply incredible. I'm beside myself.
Fuck, what a performance!
i think VH 3 was an album where Eddie would experiment because you never heard this style of Eds playing before with Dave or Sammy.
Only good thing I can say about the Cherone era was that the band was TIGHT live. They played looser and did some more jamming and improv. Ed probably relieved he didn’t have to deal with Hagar.
What's not to love about Gary?. He's handsome, sings like hell just knocked on your door, was the singer in Extreme, he's a gentleman, dress well (he could be french actually, has someone checked this out ?)
I love Gary.
And I love this song and what Eddy did with it. With Gary.
I seen this Tour this song and from afar stood out as Original songs with Gary.. this may be the best song eddies has ever done in a Hard edge led styll ballad.. interesting Gary voice isnt super but it worke don this song... I could imageing a young sammy singing this wow
Right to the point. From Afar should have been on the radio and the tour.
Fantastic song and the solo... Speechless 🔥🔥🔥
Best performance Ive seen from Van Halen since haggar days.
G0damn. The control over that demonic guitar. Holy fck! The gain Eddie must have had on his amp. Jesus. I laugh when I hear the pre VH guitar era guys diss Eddie as having no soul or feel. Lol. 😂 and listen at his tight Alex and Michael are. Holy fck
This tone is actually with the gain turned down :)
