live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia 04/20/1998 featuring Gary Cherone (ex Extreme) on vocals Видеоклипы
One of nastiest riffs Edward ever wrote...
And that crazy intro...
La corte de la Haya debería tomar medidas. 🇦🇷
Super nasty....RIPe
Agree 1000%!!
Probably my favorite!
Good lord Eddie sounds criminally good on this one!
The mix engineer here deserves a Grammy just for the drums alone.
No doubt!
Imitated but never duplicated
No one can play this
He's God
Lets keep his spirit alive
Holy crap Eddie's groove here is on another level. Absolutely ruthless!
Mean Streets might be my all time favorite Eddie song. From beat 1 to the last, he rips it up. Amazing guitar work.
Agreed
Me too. A song that shows the band as it is
Fair Warning is probably the best rock guitar album ever made --- every tune on there is smokin' hot
@@kerzytibok3211absolutely agree!
Super angry and aggressive guitar playing thru the whole thing.🤘🏻
Haven’t seen many vids from the Cherone era, but he fits in nicely. Great singer.
Not to mention he sings this song better than Dave or Sammy!
Gary can say he has played with the two best guitar players in the world Eddie and Nino and this is the first time I have seen Gary sing with Van Halen nice job
Nuno is fantastic but I think you might be in a small minority to say that he is in the top 2.
Nino who?
Gary Cherone was so under appreciated during his short time with Van Halen. Great singer 👍
he did a great job,,he made it his own version
Completely agree! Huge Van Halen fan and the only time I saw them live was with Gary singing and the show was incredible.
I remember watching the original broadcast on MTV. He added such a great showmanship to the band. I remember thinking it was almost as if Freddie Mercury was fronting VH.
Yeah he really did a great job he killed it
He was underappreciated, and at the moment the band tried to make something different since their manager's passing, the DLR retarded horde of fans, who live in the stone age up to this date, bashed it. This horde of idiots prevented the band from exploring other sounds and Eddie from evolving as musician, which threw him in the abyss again because all they wanted to listen was a few hits from a couple of albums, stagnating them as a band. Don't be surprised if VH-III becomes "the underappreciated" gem by the same idiots that bashed it when it came out, not because it was "ahead of its time" as the brainless ones like to say, but because they were too retrograde.
I like the power in the guy's voice. When he first said "AT NIGHT I WALK THIS STINKIN STREET" I was like Oh MY GOD this guy can sing.
Loved his grit!
Get outa here!
This is home, this is mean street😊
And the ability Dave had when he was creating the patented DLR screams
It sounded a lot cooler when Dave sang it
Eddie is just phenomenal, his TONE is exceptional! Wow! He's killing these riffs!
On a very very short list to be BEST EVER
not even joking
And the list can be counted on one hand
The STYLE of the band also did not fully show all his musical genius
He brought those riffs into the world, and he can take 'em out.
The Peavey Wolfgang is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever played. it blew away my PRS and Les pauls. Wish I'd kept one.
nice peavey. sell.
That tone was called the "Brown Sound" and it paid off handsomely
It took a humble guy without any ego to sing an amazing setlist of songs of every VH era...thanks Gary!!..you rock..!!
True, in my way of seeing things. Gary sings with heart and pours it all into the song. A great great performer.
💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯
TRUE, not the biggest Cherone fan, but he's definitely got the talent.... I Was just watching video of V.H. live on the first DLR 2.0 tour, I love Dave, he IS the Singer of V.H. BUT, I can't lie, right here, in this video, for "MEAN STREET".... Gary Cherone is BETTER Than DLR.... There, I said it, I can't believe I said it, but that's the truth..... Maybe I've been eating too many Brown M&M's. 🤔
Gary was by far the most talented vocalist they had. That man could sing.
@@ElHeffay1974 Easy
Rothy’s lyrics are just Amazing!!! He really is and was a poet who told a story with his songs!!!!!
The problem was that every live video I've every seen of Dave showed that he was a studio guy. Live he really wasn't that good.
If you call that glorified schmuck a poet you must have never read poetry in your entire life.
Agreed. I’ve always said I feel like Dave is telling me a personal story.
@@Suddsy.he’s just a goofball that’s too worried about doing his martial arts than actually singing and staying on beat. I always wondered how many times in the studio they would have to tell Dave to stop being an idiot and sing the song properly
Dave was great live too....until around 83-84, when he decided he'd rather rub his ass, and do scarf dancing rather than sing. I saw the Fair Warning and Diver Down tours, and Dave was on point. Saw them again for the 1984 tour, and couldn't believe I was at a VH concert, Dave sucked so bad.
DAMM!!! The mighty Van Halen was on FIRE this night!!Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
The best live record quality of a van halen, that I've ever watched, but this also shows why this guy different than you and me, will be remembered for the very future. He changed the music and then the industry, and so the culture
I was lucky to see VH live in 1997. Best concert I've been to, Cherone was a top shelf front man, and EVH was just sublime.
Eddie's memory will never leave us with videos like this!!!!!!RIP EDDIE YOU ARE SORELY MISSED😢🎸🙏
Van Halen The most ultimate Rock Band of all time R.I.P EVH
I saw them in Atlanta during this time. Eddie played about as raw as he ever had. He really played with a lot of feeling during that time.
Possibly most outta this world guitar ever
This shows how Edward was unique amongst guitarists
Yes agreed it is not just about speed as with many guitar player’s but he had it all!
The total package. His lead playing was second to none and I've just never seen a more creative rhythm player. A musical mind of creativity thar well just never see again.
His tone on this tour was amazing!
The addition of Gary was a masterstroke, guy could sing any era of VH and although VH3 wasn't as strong over the entire album as some of their previous work there was a few outstanding songs on it! Year to the day is Van Halens stairway to heaven and as witnessed in this video Gary sings his ass off! Dave couldn't sing that good on his best day ever!
Seriously?. Might be one of the dumbest comments of the year so far
What made this tour great was Gary Cherone's ability to perform both Sammy & Dave era VH tunes. These were great shows.
and this exquisite Hot For Teacher ending. Gary was awesome, I saw him this tour in Toronto, Canada.
Those darn Van Halens, why can’t they place nice. The great albums they could’ve released with GC, along with a great producer.
Yes!! Exactly.
yep
@Mister Problematic I've heard this hinted at in the past. Care to elaborate?
THe setlist for this tour was outstanding!!! VH3 rox...
I'm so glad I seen gary shiron with van halen I got to see a different side. Of what it would sound like. And thank you for that. I never looked back left the midterm to go see the show best decision I ever made. I've seen every singer with Van Halen in every show. That was in my town or state michigan, detroit, pine knob This is where I saw Gary Sharon with Van Halen.
Great night
Since 1983
Exceptional tone and playing on this tour! Gary rocked it too!
Cherone…….balls of steel. Underrated version of Van Halen.
no matter whats shown or whats being done...someone always pops up with the "U" word.....never fails. Never
@@picassoboy52 Most underrated comment of all time.
Mr. Van Halen's guitar work is phenomenal during this performance.
I went to Detroit in 98. It was great. I have seen all 3 singers. He fit Eddie just fine.
Amazing tour!! I’ll admit, Gary is an unusual replacement, but he was able to sing Roth/Hagar material with ease & conviction. Eddie was physically ripped-he looked he’d been in the gym a ton! Bruce Lee with long hair!! Hell of a show! I Eddie’s death is devastating loss for all of us who have looked & listened in amazement all these years. R.I.P.
Just didn't have the hard rock look about him..
Preferred Roth....who played with Eddie on their final tour...real showman ...
"Gary is an unusual replacement..." Very nice way of putting it.
Gary Cherone should join in the Van Halen tribute and do duets with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar when they’re performing their songs that he sang with the band
Damn that groove in that last verse and the outro with the maracas. cookin' 🔥🔥🔥🔥
May Eddie shred in peace, and disturb everybody else 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Eddie and Alex can play their asses off sober and this is proof, they were on fire this tour.
Has there ever been a bassist with better backing vocals than Michael Anthony? 🤔
I don't think Eddie was anywhere close to "sober" during this period...
Long hair Eddie on stage is for sure atleast 5-8 shots deep
Killer live version of this VH classic!!!
This clip, this song, this singer, pure kick ass rock and roll.
THIS is the tune that blew out more than one pair of Jensen 6x9's in my 1972 Rally Sport Camaro in the 1980's. Or maybe it was HAIL.
Extremely energetic performance. A+ grade for each member👍
Bah dum bum! They didn't want to Go to school today!
Eddie is the GOAT as always...no one can replicate it, amazing. But hey, Alex and Mikey are amazing too...love Alex's beat and Mikeys base line, they have great groove! Gary sounds good on this Dave era song...love his interactions with band and audience.
It's True... Eddie has been my guitar hero for a long long time, but please,we just can't forget the only guitarist In history to actually be more of an innovator and I believe an all around better overall player than the absolutely immensely talented and innovationalist know to all the great and sadly missed to this day, JAMES MARSHALL HENDRIX
good thing Eddie:s a great guitar player cause that singer fubar the vocals. Can:t replace Dave on this song
@@user-dx4wx9ut5e 🤩Agreed...ditto on everything you said. Both sadly missed...especially Eddie for me, wish I could see him in concert one more time 🥲
True true...no one can replace Dave on his Van Halen era songs.@@blainerudy2255
@@user-dx4wx9ut5e sorry but Hendrix couldn't hold a candle to King Edward --- either in playing ability or innovation
This is an epic performance! Damn!!!!
I'll say it over and over again, Eddie is the best.
Eddie*
Please spell the king's name correctly.
Will NEVER disagree with that
ALL STYLES of music include people who REVERE him
David Lee Roth and Eddie.
He was original and the best at what he did. Every guitarist that is the best depending on what genre it is.
Just awesome. Wish they would have done one more album with Cherone. I think the momentum would have grown. Theyve done very little as a band since this.
I couldn't possibly agree more!
That have a full album in the can.. Due to the obvious, it was never released.
I love how they slowed down the tempo just a little to give it a funk feel. Definitely a great performance by all!
it's definitely funky at this speed. their best song imo made even better.
The tempo wasn't 'slowed down' one bit, the song always had a funk feel, that's the way it was written and recorded in the studio for the Fair Warning album. This live performance was pretty darn wicked. The only problem I had with it was the obnoxious way Gary chose to sing it.
God Bless You Eddie Thanks for all the killer tunes!!!!
Saw this tour.... Eddie was on top of his game!!!
Eddie was so amazing. Rip brother.
Nice touch the "Hot for Teacher" ending!
Really cool rendition ... Everybody was great !!!
gary is awesome
If they would have done this like Gary suggested by going out on tour and showing everyone the band and getting people used to the new line up I think it would have worked. Eddie wanted to put out an album then tour. Gary could have really worked out by being able to sing DLR and SH plus his music with VH. This concert shows how incredible they were and how he filled those big shoes easily. Gary deserves more credit! 🤘🏼
Man, never thought about it this way, but I think you're 100% correct. Unfortunately, I'm sure it was more than Eddie. The whole industry operated like that at the time: Album, then tour.
Every band that gets a new singer wants to make new music first. Otherwise, they risk being labeled a cover band or accused of resting on their laurels. They made the right decision to make an album first. It simply didn’t click with the public, arguably because it just wasn’t as good as the DLR and Hagar stuff.
No he doesn't.
they did do a new album and toured it
@@imelvino - The OP is saying they should’ve toured on the Dave and Sammy catalog before doing a new album with Gary. However, a true blue artist like EVH is always about “now”, rather than “then”. If they had toured with Gary before recording new songs, they risked being labeled a cover band and I’m sure that mere thought made Eddie cringe. I imagine Gary was excited to put his stamp on the band, too, with new material. Personally, I just don’t think the public wanted a third singer in VH - they wanted prime Dave, but that shipped had sailed, as the Different Kind of Truth tour proved.
OMG!!!! The tone that Eddie had for this song was the best i heard. The band was so damn tight! Gary Cherone’s version of this song was insane! Hitting on all cylinders!!! Wow! RIP Eddie love you and miss you!!!!!❤❤❤
The best live Mean Street on RUclips
no
@@djhoneylove5710 yes. This is the best quality version of Mean Street on the net
@@jason698 Still, no.
@@shaymcquaid absolute fact plane and simple
The intro to the song is mind blowing.
Love the added bluesy vocal style of Cherone on this version. The breakdown in the middle was magic!
Gary did a great job. Eddie was in top form too!
Man dude, I never heard of him. He was fantastic. What?
Never heard this guy before. He kicks ass.
He was in a group in the 90's called Extreme. They were a B list band known mainly (maybe only) for the song "More Than Words."
But yeah, he sounds phenomenal on this.
It's hilarious that so many Zoomers have no idea who Gary Cherone is
@@finnsterling6514To guitarists and musicians, Extreme is NOT a B list band. A listers all the way.
That strangled divebomb near the end of the solo is wicked.
Everything he does is wicked. In a class by himself.
Just an amazing performance. Eddie hardly ever played the intro when they played this song. Always did the intro during his solo. This was a pure treat for the audience. Miss you Ed.
I didn't like VH III, but I have to admit Gary does an awesome job here.
Exactly what I was just thinking! VH3 is easily my least favorite, but holy crap he sounds good with the band live.
That's the thing. The music on Van Halen III is good. I didn't like the mix. Hearing Gary with them live is awesome. I've always loved Extreme. Not to mention Van Halen :)
Same here. I skipped out on the tour because I just did not like the CD. I regret not going because the band sounded tight and Gary Cherone really did a great job with songs from both eras.
Ez az a helyzet amikor egy remek hang nem hangzik össze a VH stílusával. De mindent megtett.
Love the hot for teacher ending of mean street!!!
When Van Halen learned lead singers aren’t replaceable
This guitar tone is still amazing today.
Man, Gary Cherone is such a fantastic vocalist. I'm seemingly one of the few who actually liked VH3.
Me too!
Great record ❤
I remember when that album was being promoted at Media Play back in December of 1998.
I’m guilty as well. I thought it was great!!
I didn't care for the album, but otherwise Gary was a great fit. Wish he had longer to work with the band.
Gary does a great job and not once did I hear him say "I forgot the fucking lyrics!!"
Say what you want about van halen 3 but year to the day is one of the most epic songs ever especially live
The first time I heard a year to the day I was stoned, hands down agreed absolutely Epic
Cherone.. One lucky bastard... been in two bands with arguably the two best guitar players of rock!
My God! If we’re gonna talk music, let’s begin and and end the conversation here
So much to unpack here...Alex Van Halen looking like he just arrived from George Washington's fife and drum militia, Michael Anthony looking like a frat boy trying not to blow chunks after one-too-many, Eddie barely touching the guitar while the amp screams like Schwartz's mother in A Christmas Story while Cherone masterfully melts down the Roth and Haggar vocals into the V3000 Liquid Terminator and slays the audience. Amazing performance !
I remember watching this on MTV --- I think it was a live event? Hard to believe that MTV used to show actual concerts LOL
Gary really nailed the whole list of tunes live! Great singer!
He really did. The songwriting in that era didn’t propel the same level of power… would have liked to hear a second album of those four guys to hear, if they would’ve gotten there.
Unbelievable!! He and Jimi are 2 that changed the direction of playing guitar. Everyone else followed in their steps.
Gary killed this and there's a LOT of Aussies that should consider themselves very lucky!!!! What a hell of a show this had to of been!!!
What a freak
We will never see another guitar player like this ever again
Imitated but never duplicated
He set the bar
But he is the bar
And never took a lesson
Wow 1st time I have seen Cherone with VH...Really different.. Yes his energy is good...Like at the Freddy Mercury Concert....
The only Van Halen show that I’ve ever seen as this was their first and only tour of Australia.
Dave couldn't carry Cherone's jockstrap, man that guy has the pipes. The band and mix sounds fantastic here.
Gary did a fine job covering VH.
Helleva lot better than Hagar. I saw this tour and Cherone exceeded my expectations. They should've made another record with him instead of doing nothing for almost a decade.
You know, Gary was like a nice blend of of Dave and Sammy. All things considered equal, he was the best choice for the time
I don't usually feed trolls, but in thjs case...
I do own every album put out by this band. If you had finished reading my comment you would have seen my qualifying statement that Gary was the best choice for them *at the time*. They had burned bridges with both Dave and Sammy. Ed was inspired to try a different way of doing vh, and they needed someone who could sing all the material as well as usher in a new sound. Yes Gary is awkward and goofy on stage. At this point the in their careers, Ed was in more of a studio mode than performance mode, so they didn't take their live show as seriously as they did in the past
***** Your first paragraph references the 2004 reunion tour, which happened after this, so what does that have to do with this?
Much of "Meanstreet" was written at least 5 - 6 years before it was recorded on "Fair Warning," and can be heard on their demo, along with recordings made prior to their being signed. It's not really a mystery why, after about 20 years, that Ed tries to change it up a little bit. There's nothing wrong with that. If you want the exact recording, just save your money and listen to the recorded work.
If Cherone was such a bad choice, what was the right one for that time? Now that it's 17 years later, it should be easily identifiable, right?
There is some good stuff on the Van Halen 3 release. It doesn't necessarily fit either of the previous two eras, so it should be judged as single entity. Using that lens, it's not a bad cd.
I'm thinking you're primarily a Sammy fan.
+rklewis2 Gary may have worked if his stage antics were a little more subdued, and if they waited a little while before releasing an album. The material wasn't as strong as they had put out in the past, and it was released at a time when Van Halen's style of rock was losing popularity quickly.
rklewis2 *Mean Street
Eddie's guitar tone here was right on the money
The band is tight and rocking harder than ever in this video. Sound great!
This may be my favorite Van Halen song...and honestly this may be the best live performance of it I've seen on RUclips yet.....Eddie on that guitar...no I cant even just single Ed out, the entire band including the singer sound great here!! Thanks for posting!
Yeah man! This m with you on that. This is fire
Totally agree! Eddie's guitar is exceptional! Gary Cherone's voice is amazing here. Perfect!!! Not sure I dig all of the movements though.
Gary Did awesome!!!! He held it. ...they did great..
Watching the Van Halen 3 stuff.... This stuff is as good as live Edward gets
Simply the best live version of this song ever (at least captured on tape). VH on that tour was very tight... made up for a weak album.
Agreed. This was by far the best tour I've seen of theirs as it went the farthest into their musical catalog. That's something that neither Sammy nor Dave did.
Band was right on point and beyond. Probably the best live version 2nd only to the view I had at the fair warning tour front row Eddie V. at the now destroyed by a tornado Hara arena Dayton Ohio
Holy Crap that Singer was killing it!
Band wise better playing than 2004. Gary hung in there and got the job done. I have to admit I saw this in its entiret. The concert was on point and all four of them gave their best. Thank you guys for being the talented performers that you are. Long live VH
The place is packed and I dont see anybody complaining. Gary is a great singer, just one more version of this great band.
That album barely sold 500k. Huge disappointment.
Vh playing this song on this tour was HUGE! The first time they played old stuff in 15 years.
Cherone did the Dave and Sammy eras so well. And songs like From Afar, year to the Day and Josephina are awesome.
Gary was an still is a great, capable singer. He just couldn't fill 4 shoes in the same tour. Come on, Haggar and Roth at the same time, that's brutal.
Problem with Cherone is he sings as if he’s in a Broadway show about Van Halen, not in Van Halen.
Very well said.
Love that little fill that Alex did at 4:44
Took my 11 year old son to see VH with Gary in 98 for his first concert and then with DLR and Sammy years later so he's seen VH with all 3 singers.
Wow I've never seen or heard this before and I'm blown away! ffing fantastic!!
Awesome live version, Gary sounds great as did VH III
I totally agree! Its a much different sound, but lets embrace the change...not bash our favorite band for trying something new!!
Hunter Hoag Eddie said this VH line-up was leaning towards a Pink Floydish type of vrock sound, and they had the talent to do this...it would have been great but you don't sound like Pink Floyd in one try...I just wish thay had done at least 4 albums (in 4 years), then gone back to heavier music. Fair Warning plus Pink Floyd could have been classic!
This is the first time in all of these years I even bothered to check out any of these VH vids with Gary Cherone as I kind of lost interest after DLR and then even Sammy Hagar. Have to say that for those criticizing Gary Cherone, well you're entitled to your opinions. I didn't expect a carbon copy of DLR but was pretty impressed with the amount of energy and enthusiasm Gary had singing these old classic VH tunes. Furthermore, is Eddie's playing off the hook or what?!? Holy Shit!! That guitar playing was like a fire breathing dragon burning down everything in its path. Can see that he was playing the Peavey Wolfgang in this vid but what amp's and effects was he using on this tour-anybody know?? Eddie's guitar tone and playing was absolutely fucking killer!! Don't think i've ever heard it sounding better than this. This had to have been the Peavey 5150 heads all the way I'm guessing.
Totally agree. Eddie is on fire for this show.
Agreed. I also really like this stage setup. Thought it was clean but cool and created a more focused effect on the band.
Yeah his peavey 5150's - effects wise he had a flanger, phaser, wah wah pedal, 2 delays (with tempos set differently) and a eventide harmonizer (which he really used on that tour - last time he used the harmonizer was the Balance Tour )
This is by far my favorite version of MS
I bought a 5150 slant cab the year they came out. It arrived with a dead XLR jack but other than that, I'll NEVER let it go. It's HEAVY as fuck (they compressed 11 plys to the thickness of a Marshall 7 ply cab) but it basically means you can fire your bassist as it growls AND has bottom.
Holy shit. Gary Cherone is killing it...
Now that’s a great singer! ❤
Edward Holy shitski! Gary Mike Alex. Fuckn absolute pure immense energy!!! Floored and loving it❤ Jesus Mary Joseph! Thankyou for your energy! Headphones are melted!!!
Tell you the truth, I’d rather listen to Gary Cherone sing these older Van Halen tunes, and Dave, because at least he sticks to the lyrics… no matter how many times you see these guys are here these guys the band was always so tight, so goddamn good. We wish you were still here, Eddy! You gave us a lifetime of rock ‘n’ roll pleasure.
Yep, I’ll say it too… Eddie was the master af tone and technique. Gary sounds great and this performance is nothing short of stellar! I’m going back to watch again 🤘🏼
