live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia 04/20/1998 featuring Gary Cherone (ex Extreme) on vocals
This is a really great performance.... Gary is killing it.
This is an underappreciated album.
I like it.
Saw this in concert and loved the tour. Gary brought so much energy to the show. Underrated!
Who rated it and what was the rating?
This is one of my top 5 VH albums.
Amazing from beginning to end. Some of Ed's most mind blowing playing.
Gary Cherone is a god.
I honestly liked the Gary time period. I feel like he carried that Haggar-ish vocal sound that VH wanted to continue on with, but he also had a bit of that youthful energy he brought along with him.
this was the best song on VH III. I have to admit, I actually liked the whole album
The only other song on that album that was any good was "Fire In The Hole"
All versions of VH deliver. Gary is a true talent. It's not Roth-era. It's not Sammy-era. It's a band doing what the greats do: striving, pushing and never remaining stagnant.
Count Von D this was EVH's solo album.
All the music he has done is his.Except for the covers Dave wanted to do. so what is not his?
This song sucks so bad it cracked rock and roll.
Cant even hear what this flake is singing, whether live or on the recording.
It's like they are drowning him out on purpose and the song meanders, going on and on with no direction.
And Eddie's spaghetti-noodling fucking sucks. Holy shit.
And then at the end they shit on the beatles.
Fuck this garbage.
Im ashamed of you Eddie. Seriously.
I like Gary Cherone a lot. Guys got pipes.
It's tough enough to replace ONE icon - let alone TWO. This track is VH3 at their finest and shows Gary holding his own.
Watching Eddie and Mike play together..they look like they are having fun...it saddens me the way the Van Halens have treated Michael Anthony.
Van Halen 3 was ahead of its time and subsequently under appreciated...period! What a great album, especially songs like "One."
+Robert Christman Genuinely curious - what about III do you think was ahead of its time, and has time caught up with it?
Robert Christman One? You mean Once.
A liked "Without You" and "Fire in the Hole". I thought those two songs were really awesome.
@@crazycooper1024 Im surprised none of you mentioned "From Afar" one of the best of that album imo
Agree
Gary was great. VHIII is a keeper.
I agree…just bad timing. Not only within the actual music industry but also for Van Halen. Gary sounded absolutely amazing…was just an absolute weird time. So, it wasn’t necessarily the songs sounded bad, except for maybe that one that Ed sang lead vocals on later on in the VHIII album, it’s mainly cuz the songs were mixed very poorly. The brother’s were also having this weird problem with Mike remaining best buds with Sammy Hagar, so his backing vocals were suppressed as well and Ed had played a lot of bass guitar on a lot of the songs off the VHIII album two, so there was a lot of needed tension, when I’m guessing Mike was probably laid-back.
Ed's tone on this tour was awesome.
The background vocals from Eddie and Michael Anthony are absolutely AMAZING!!!! And the final part singing a snippet of "We Can Work It Out" gives the song a great end!!!
Yeeeeeessssss 🔥🔥
i was looking for this comment! their backing vocals are amazing, live is even more beautiful
Amazing.. I miss Van Halen..
Word.
Great song; this version is smokin'!
They fucking destroyed it. The sheer power and energy in this song nearly melted off my face.
Fuck yeah brotha 🤘🏼
This is a great album. He is a great singer. There are 5 awesome songs on the album. Saw them in Detroit in 1998 All 4 guys stole the show. I have seen all 3 singers. They are all powerful with Mike Ed and Alex
Some of Mikey's best playing ever on this number. Even with all the shit he had to put up with he always delivered. And Gary is a force of nature. Saddens me to no end that things ended the way they did.
Actually Gary and Eddie were pretty close again towards the end might have even recorded a few tunes. In the vaults unless Wolfe lets out.
Eddie played all of the bass on III.
Except for 3 songs, this being one of them. I believe. @@aladdinsane7882
Genius rhythm guitar
I loved this concert, this version and with a special nod to The Beatles.
I really wish they would have stuck with Gary longer, give this lineupe time to gel, I really enjoyed this era
same here mate, they really should have stuck with him. The album wasn't the best (although i do like some of it), but live Gary was on fire! They should have given it time or at least another album/tour cycle.
Michael Anthony never got his due. Great bassist and great on vocals. He was a trooper for the VH brothers.
Yeah, it was sad to hear Eddie denigrate his contribution to VH by saying he had to teach Anthony how to play the basslines in VH. One of the greatest of all time, yet self-sabotaging the final couple of decades of his own band.
@@tweak991 Ed’s always done that. Trashing the past despite looking like he’s having the time of his life in all these videos. In 1986, he would bring up Dave during interviews, when he wasn’t even asked about, and say “the past 12 years were miserable dealing with Roth.” Yeah right Ed.
@@Iknowthelaw13 Yeah, it's sad. It sounds like he was able to get into a better place with everyone he trashed over the years before he passed on. It really sucks that his behaviors kept us from getting more VH or even solo music over the last 20 years.
@@tweak991 I don't think he meant to trash him...ed wrote all the music so it wouldn't be a stretch to say Eddie taught him the baselines..I mean he wrote it
@@bls8959 that's not how he said it, lol. It was like when they scrubbed his likeness from the website, after fans got all bent it was suddenly a "mistake". C'mon now. "Accidentally" removing only one member from the website.
Its all King Edward Van Halen killing it live no matter what song he played. Listen to his wah pedal ,awesome sound and absolutely incredible playing as he always did.
Listen to those signature harmonies. :)
I loved this song when it came out and really enjoy Gary's performance.
Really good song. Unfortunately, VH fans tend to be stuck in comparison mode instead of judging the work on it's merits. Different is not necessarily bad.
Sammy would have made them millions singing this tune.
Eddie was still playing great in 98 should of put out that second album with this group I liked Gary
Never noticed this before but they were going for a 'give it away' by the chili peppers vibe on this one. must have been an attempt to update their sound for the 90s. It's got the same kind of beat in verse, it's got a loud 'in your face' kind of feel. The verses are almost rap/sung. I think people were picking up on their attempt to try something 'modern' and didn't appreciate it, along with Gary. Maybe it could have worked if this album sounded more like 80s VH
I really feel like the addition of Gary was an attempt to bring youthful energy to the band. he has the sound of haggar and energy of Roth. I think Gary was fantastic with VH
Kevin R. Eddie has always claimed he was only influenced by Clapton and Paige, and never listened to other artists. He was/is a studio rat.
Still listening in 2020..
Eddie is and always will be king !
Their music remains ageless. -2019.
i like this song
Saw them on this tour and Gary kicked ass. I have always been a huge Extreme fan too. They did some deep VH cuts including Bottoms Up and Somebody me a Doctor ( songs Sammy wouldn't touch due to ego). I think their second studio attempt would have been amazing had Gary stayed.
How many Sammy songs did Dave sing? Talk about ego
If they had better production it could have gone much better.
0:49 Mirroring Eddies taps on BASS. Absolute mad lad. VHIII had the most mature and intricate bass work of Michael's entire career, but you'd never KNOW it, because they Jason Newstead'ed him in the mix. This might be the only place you can (sort of) hear his basslines.
Ed played all of the bass on III.
The story goes that Eddie recorded most of the bass on VHIII anyway, so not these bass parts. And some will tell you Ed recorded all of it and Mike appears nowhere on the record.
Great songcraft. Garys voice and physicality on stage is primo...excellent. VH putting in some good work.
The best one with Gary
Amazing, this is my kind of music! There are great moments on VH3. Gary rocks! Absolutely love this song. This is some real rock! The Beatles tribute at the end of the song is also superb!!!
Rip master !!
They are fantastic here!
one of my top fav Van Halen songs!!
R.I.P Eddie🙏🏾
Gary Cherone is the best.
Alex rocks this tune...
Look at Gary's rockstar moves very cool. They had it going on but who knows what happened.
I was thirteen when I bought this album in '98 and its still one of my favs 🤘 plus when leathal weapon 4 came out in '98 I was buzzing with the intro 😜
This is one of my fav VH songs ever! This version is amazing.
Gary was bitchin in V.H. wow.. I saw them at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles... and what a great concert it was. He added another element.
They could have made 5 albums with him by now if they stuck it out. This is really good stuff. He could sing all Sammys stuff oto a T!
They sing in the same register, so yeah.
Yeah right. Hes singing flat here, and never sang as high as sammy did sustained. Sammy sang HIGH all the time, not just hitting a high note here and there like gary did. Sammy was almost like a younger geddy lee from rush.
@@trenken I would take anyone at this point. That band will never play another song or write again. Freaking shame that ego is bigger than everything else.
The sound mix is crap on the album, but Gary was great. I think maybe another try would’ve yielded a good album...
He was an hybrid of Sammy/David
Love Eddie guitar tone😎
RIP Eddie..
Amen...I was there this night in the crowd in Melbourne...It was amazing.
This album does not get enough credit. Better than Roth. I would love to see a tour with all three singers and both bassists.
I think you know as well as we all do that it'll never happen. I'd go see it for sure, but there's too much ego to go around with those singers, and frankly, the fans want Michael back, and they don't care for Gary or Wolfgang much at all. Again, I'd go see it, but it's definitely not a Van Halen lineup enough people care for.
Ah, when we still had hope.... breaks my heart.
Seeing this performance fills the gaps in just listening to the album. They are just crushing it.
I know I’m often in the minority here, but this one of my favorite VH songs. “5150” is still at the top of my list though.
This is a great tune. Great version with this tempo
Such an underrated track. I love this live version more because it's got that ballsy Van Halen feel with the lower tuning. Mike and Ed are killing it vocally, Ed's guitar playing is top notch, Alex has that great bounce and beat like he always does, Mike is just the most solid bass player and Gary is easily the most vocally gifted of all the vocalists that have performed in this band. The album version of this track was just poorly produced. Ed hired a producer that did TV soundtracks and not a rock n roll band. I hope this gets remastered because I'd bet a remaster with the proper mixing would sound incredible.
My favorite song of Van Halen.💙🤩
This song brought the best in Michael's playing.
Who could ever rock out like these guys??? No one.
So good, great song.
This is really a great song
Eddie was on fire for this concert.
**edit** They all are on fire. Even with his fucked up neck, Alex is tearing it up.
This is not at all the real Van Halen, but I will say that Ed is really on during these shows. Sober, clean sounding, and Mike and Al perfectly in lockstep with the rhythm.
2024. This song kicks ass forever
If sammy sang this song it would have been a huge hit and played on the radio. I gree this song was way ahead of its time and an evolved sound for Van Halen. Too band nobody gave Gary a chance, he is a great singer and not a bad frontman. This song is killer, one of my faves.
you can see the absolute damage rock n roll has taken on Van Hagar drummer neddy van halen with his neck brace thing. What a fucking trouper
Long live the HAGARS
Buena rola. DEP Eddie, no hay otro guitarrista que toque tan feliz como él.
i like it's song ,, it's backround Vocals!!!!😍😍😍😍 ,, VH Trademark 👍👍👍👏👏👏,,, awesome👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Love the grove here.
Ladies and Gentlemen... due to illness, tonight the part of Gary Cherone will be played by Ted Danson.
LMAO!!!!!
The band sounded so good at this time. Sad it ended the way it did.
Yeah you can blame Eddie for that I think. He was a drunk and a control freak who ran the band straight into the ground.
@@justsomeguyization Around this time he was a meth junkie too, according to Michael Anthony
@@BoredOuttaMySkullBoiyou're out by about 5 years. He was relatively clean for this album, fell off the wagon after this album bombed, his marriage broke down and he got cancer.
@@fatShowPony I see. Either way, sad it got to that, and all because this (honestly quite good) album didn't sell that well. I'll tell you what, with the exception of Garage Inc., VH III was the best rock/metal album of 1998
Sober eddie was a totally different human being.
So focused and pro and a joy to watch! I met them all here in puerto rico minus eddie. He was out of it. I tried twice. Wasted time. Even michael anthony said to me it was not worth it. That statement meant a lot. Such a pity. I waited decades to meet them all.
Van halen always awesome.. 🤘
I don't care what anyone says, this was the best version of Van Halen since the 1970's!
Wow.. this recording is so much more killer than the album. I could actually listen to this!
Exelent 👏 👏 👏 👏 performance
Great Singer
It was 1998 the era of alternatif somgs..but Eddie still stand up doing his own thing with his skill..
Real musician👍
Musik yang sangat bagus dari Van Halen ,,, penampilan yang keren dari Legenda band Hard Rock terbaik,,, backing vocal yang sangat khas dari Van Halen ... Sungguh Luar biasa 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍👍
This is Van Halen when they could actually perform.
Omg that ending! So out of left field! 🔥🫠🔥
I was there that night in Melbourne. Their only ever Australian tour.
Gary was great, tried his best. He should have come back for another album...
Van Halen were done after that but Sammy should never of been allowed to leave.
RIP Eddie
one of my favorite songs of the Rock.....great work Van Halen rulessssssssss
Great song and album!
Simply Perfect
"FUNK HALEN"😎🤟🔥
Good song. Best on this album.
Alex's kit is smokin'!
3:38 OMG
This stands up over time. I saw this tour.
I love the Beatles thrown in at the end!
David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar.
Gary Cherone is a mixture of both; the musical side of Hagar and the charismatic side of Roth, with Cherone's own goofy spin on it all.
Honestly my favourite Van Halen frontman.
And that’s the problem: there is no one, uniform version of Van Halen. There are the Dave or the Gravers (myself), the Sam fans, and folks like you. That’s Ed’s fault. Changing lead singers and calling it the same band? Tarnished their legacy. That original lineup had every reason to be globally recognized as much as the Stones, Zeppelin or the Beatles. They had as much, if not more talent. And all the hits to fill an entire hour on the radio
great quality..thanks for uploading
As a luthier, I really think that with the new guitar came new sounds. In the past Eddie only used a bridge humbucker and got a loud punch. With the newer Wolfgangs, he started with neck pickups, danelectro lipstick pickups, p90's. Some of the guitars had hard tailpieces, which meant less tremolo work. All those new guitar options gave him a wider sound. This album showed it.
WHAT IS THE WEIRD THING COMING OUT OF THE SIDE OF HIS GUITAR, above the 1/4 plug jack?
Its keeping the cable off his feet i think.
Edward used lots of hard tail axes. Esp in the early times.
VH3 is a great album. Sounds different than the usual VH music we got. Gary is a great singer too.
RIP Eddie
Without You is One of the Standout Tracks on Van Halen III...The Backing Vocals are Sublime and the Melody Fantastic....Why The Fans didn't like the Album is a mystery to me!?...Yes it's different to Classic Van Halen, but Musically Gr8er...No Wonder Eddie was so upset that it didn't sell as well as expected...This One of their Best Albums, IMHO...Cheers from Damo.
Love eddies little hops in the beginning never gets old
Doesn’t matter the material Eddie, Eddie, Eddie Van Halen nobody can do it like that legendary done
Good footage

The great EVH
Now that I'm out the depressive state I was in then. Dark album 4 me. But listening now I see great musicians. VH 3
I'm not a huge fan of this album, but this song rocks
I love you ed no matter what ed for life and all 3 singers Mike I mis you my friend
Great !!!
Regardless if VH3 kinda sucked, this is really one of the bands best jams. Guitar bass drums lead and background vocals.. All brilliant.
