    This is some of Ed's best playing. While some of the Roth era riffs are really strong, the Hagar era songs are all much more difficult and exhibit Ed's growth and complexity as a guitarist. For anyone who tries to play some of it, you know what I'm talking about. The fact that Ed does it do effortlessly and in time illustrates what a master he is, not to mention that he penned the whole thing as a composer. Long live the King.....

      Saw VH with Sammy...more modern stage of course and was very good show but here on east coast common opinion is Sammy was best when solo artist and here he was never more than opening act...a great one....saw him several times but for my money the first 3 tours with DLR were simply more entertaining and promoting their best albums imo at full throttle(WACF personal fave) ....starting with their tour opening for Sabbath. Maybe being a teen and having little cares in the GA venue days where it was relatively easy to find a way to get close to the stage plays into that opinion. They did upstage Sabbath in a way but I still loved seeing original Sabbath lineup in their first run...amazing show all around.

    Van Halen is one of the few bands where 2 lead singers have managed to forge a legacy with the band on their own merits rather than riding the coattails of their predecessors. The only other bands I can think of that have truly achieved this are AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and maybe a couple others. That really is a testament to Van Hagar’s skills as songwriters and live performers. Few other bands can cite their 1st singer and 2nd singer as being equally deserving of praise for their contributions to the longevity of a band.

    Seen Van Halen at the US Festival in 1983. Been hooked ever since. Never heard a guitar with such Clean, Crisp, Amazing Tones in those days. What song do you think Greatly exhibits his multiple Rhythm to Lead transition mastering? I listened and thought.. then realized.. all of them lol. I think "Amsterdam" does a good job of it. Eddie, I miss so much.. Your Stage Rresence, Harmonic voice and "Patented Flying Jump Kicks." Your musical talent speaks for itself. ⚡🎸

    that's why VH was great: at its core, it was a electric blues/R&R/groove band with tapping and big choruses

    WOW! FUCKING WOW!
    I remember this song, but just barely.
    I was working so much back then I just missed it, and a lot of other good music just because I got caught up in the rat race, and for reasons that I can't say or explain, the almighty dollar was what I got wrapped up in. Shameful to me now.
    Anyway, this just blew me away!
    I gotta say that I think this performance is incredible! All of it!
    But Eddie's playing, and his solos on this are just on a whole different level!!
    JESUS PENIS!!!
    JUST FUCKING AMAZING!!!
    I think this is the best solo of his that I've ever seen!!
    WOW!!!
    THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
    I MUST GO AND PISS MY NEIGHBORS OFF NOW, BECAUSE THEY WILL ALL KNOW THIS SONG VERY SHORTLY.
    Be safe out there everyone! If you haven't noticed, there are mental midgets wreaking havoc every place they go!!
    Good Luck!!
    R.I.P. EDWARD.
    YOU ARE DEARLY MISSED!!

    I was at this concert, still have my ticket stub. I’m 51, long time ago now. Unbelievable, 27 years ago, it seems like yesterday to me now. Van Halen played 2x consecutive nights,I was at the second show. I remember Alex with his neck brace on. I think it was Kenny Wayne Shepherd that opened for them that time.

    A rare live cut that I prefer over the studio version. Just so rockin and grimey tuned down.

    • @kcmet79
      @kcmet79 10 лет назад +1

      Wow.
      Tempo's waaaaaay too fast. The rest i guess I can understand your opinion on even if disagreeing... The half step drop was prolly just to accommodate Sammy (and he still has trouble).

    • @johnbon6
      @johnbon6 9 лет назад

      kcmet79 Nope. it's that way on record too.

    • @kcmet79
      @kcmet79 9 лет назад +1

      John Bonham this is tuned down half a step (and maybe a microtone beyond; I'm just using my ear), and is a bit faster, than it appears on Balance. /smilePatrick, I actually don't disagree on the downtuning, it doesn't change how stunning the riffs are. I just don't like the riffs in this song being played so fast; I like the slow-end mid tempo grind. Same reason as if one played Metallica's Sad but True at 130+ bpm lol. Just a preference.

    • @johnbon6
      @johnbon6 9 лет назад

      kcmet79 Trust me, it's the same tuning as the album version. Yes, they're playing it faster than the album version, because Eddie hates the song. Lastly, Metallica do do that. They play if faster than the album version live, and they have wavered in the tempo department on that song from way slower, to somewhat faster for years.

    • @kcmet79
      @kcmet79 9 лет назад +4

      Trust you? Lol Wow are you sanctimonious and ignorant. It's a fact that this performance is down tuned half a step compared to the album version; not an opinion. I knew without checking since I've had perfect pitch most of my life; however, I compared the two versions in a silly attempt to appease you (a simple task, even if you require a piano, guitar, or pitch pipe to discern the pitch difference, which you are apparently incapable of doing)... and wow, they're still half a step apart! (album version E, this version E flat, played in drop D and drop D flat respectively). Amsterdam's also one of many songs ive sang and played on the guitar for years... not that it matters as I'm familiar enough with the song, and change in musical pitch, to tell anyway. You can keep stating that it's in the same key as the album version if you'd like to though. Weird.

    • @haythijs
      @haythijs 5 лет назад

      Physical he was suffering some pains due to his hips. Sammy even asked them to tour later so Ed could get a operation and in rehabilitation so he would be in a 100% shape. But the recordcompany wanted the release and tour so they toured.
      For me, Van Halen is also the dynamical physical show during a gig, but Ed could not deliver.
      Tonewise he is great indeed, what a sound. Although I prefer the rawer sound during the Fuck tour, during Balance it sounded somehow cleaner to me.
      But then again, he is Eddie van Halen, a very gifted beautifull talented guitarplayer. If god wanted his son to be playing guitar, he would named him Edward.
