    Did... did that cardboard London hit a horse?

    • @JayForeman
      @JayForeman  5 лет назад +4687

      Nope. Computer magic and a cheeky sound effect. In real life, the cardboard thing landed nowhere near the horse.

    • @ashleycrane415
      @ashleycrane415 5 лет назад +1201

      I’ve a feeling Jay grew up on a steady diet of Monty Python, the goons, Ronnie Barker and yes (prime) minister. Editing is occasionally illogical.

    • @ashleycrane415
      @ashleycrane415 5 лет назад +348

      Kimberly Brouwers it’s entirely possible that the cardboard representation of London remained completely stationary and the horse, Jay and the rest of the greater metropolis moved around it, but I think that may be beyond the scope of this video.

    Here in America, In the New England area. We still have names like “Middlesex” among others like Kent, Peterborough, Bristol, Cambridge, etc etc. I’m sure the early colonist didn’t want to pick new names for this new land at the time but if “middlesex” got lost to London in the UK, rest assured it’s still alone in America. The GEOGRAPHIC home counties - Middlesex, Berkshire, Essex, Kent, Surrey - still do exist, however, and encroach into the political area of Greater London. However, those run right up to the walls of the ancient City, and do not respect the political changes of 1889 and 1965. So Hounslow is in Middlesex geographically, but so is Westminster. Bexley is in Kent geographically, but so is Lewisham. And so on...
      Postal counties that show home counties in Greater London specifically outside of the cardinal inner-London post codes, however, were formally axed in 1996.

I tell family back home we live in Greater London but then they say we live in Surrey due to our postal address. Even people in London say, 'that's not London'. Trying to explain to people back home that we live in London is a tough one to get across. Great video!

      Most Greater Manchester residents do not use Greater Manchester on their addresses. Just like Greater London, a lot of folk are very proud of the historical counties and districts and will therefore put either Cheshire or Lancashire. The postcodes are also similar to London, as in they keep codes from (what were once satellite towns, like Oldham OL..., Bolton, BL..., Stockport, SK..., Wigan WN...) their original town, even though they are now in Greater Manchester. Very similar to London. Funnily enough the oft-stated city-in-its-own-right Salford uses a Manchester (M...) postcode! It is a bit messed up but nothing on the scale of London!

    The whole “I live in a different town than what my mailing address says” is an issue in the US too. I’ve found that most people default to saying what’s on their mail as being where they say they’re from…. unless it’s a very rural area. In those areas, the zip code town name is huge, and so you have to be more specific when saying where you live. If the made-up zip code name of Anywhere has an area of 50 miles, it’s more helpful to say you live in the little town of “But Here” within “Anywhere.”

      The suburban communities of Rochester, NY seem to be in a similar limbo. When I visited there, I found out that RIT bordered a place known as “Henrietta”, but then I found out that its postal address was still in Rochester. I then found an Outback Steakhouse in “Greece” (the community in Upstate NY, not the country), but it was again in Rochester according to its postal address. My question is whether the city of Rochester has ever had to do something like London did.

      There is a zip code in my county that crosses the boarder into the next county. More confusingly, the zip code name is the same as the name of this other county. So people who live there have to give their address as being a county they don't live in.

    Just a note on the fact about Surrey county hall at 4:20.
    I shared this fact with my family in Surrey as I thought they'd be interested. But apparently after March 2019 it was announced that the council would move to Midas House in Woking (which is in Surrey and not Greater London) and County Hall in Kingston would be sold - although at the time of writing the move has yet to be completed.
    Also to add to the question about where London ends, my cousin works at a kids outdoors centre in Surrey in the village of Shear - which I would describe as most definitely not London - but the centre is owned and run by (and my cousin paid by) Westminster council. Which makes sense as the kids who go are all from London schools. However my cousin who lives on site pays his council tax to Surrey, doesn't get to vote for those who decide Westminster spending and he votes for the MP for the consistency of Guildford.

    I was born in 1958, near Ilford, which was then in Essex, although when I was 4 1/2 in late 1962 to Hornchurch, also then in Essex but the boundaries were changed whilst we still lived there. I was seven in 1965, so did not understand politics, but I do remember Dad having to get a new fireplace because we had become a smokeless zone [this was explained, I could understand that it meant we could no longer burn coal]. My father had grown up in Barking also in the Essex/London area, and my grandmother continued to live there most of the rest of her life. When my parents sent her a letter or card they still addressed the envelopes ''Barking, Essex''. When I was 8 we moved to Gravesend in Kent, a few miles outside the Greater London Area, and we moved again when I was 10 to St Leonards in Sussex, on the coast. We have lived in St Leonards or neighbouring Hastings ever since, with several local moves.
    Perhaps someone could confirm or correct this, that the pre-1965 boundary between Essex and London County was the River Lee which goes through modern Newham [a borough which was created in 1965], so East Ham was Essex and West Ham was London County.

    What is it with brits and their obsession of drawing lines on land which they don’t understand. Cyril Radcliffe, who drew India Pakistan border, had never lived in British India and had absolutely no idea of Indian demography. After he did draw the line, he left India before the borders were made public, fearing for his life.

      I wonder if the intent was to keep politicians from trying to draw lines to their benefits (jerrymandering). Get people from the outside normal deadlocked partisan politics to form the council.

    Since 1965 there were numerous *small* changes to the Greater London area. One which always stands out for me is Arkley which reverted to Hertfordshire back in 1991. At 6:06 we can see that stray triangle pointing north near Barnet. Also Greater London did not share a border with Berkshire until 1995.
