In "The Legacy Of Skateboarding Tricks That Can't Be Landed | Leap Of Faith | El Toro" we ask the question, what is the appeal of skateboarding tricks that weren't landed?! It's interesting...in a sport such as baseball, if you hit a Game 7 World Series Home Run Game-Winner and it gets robbed at the wall, you are forgotten. If you compare that to analogy to skateboarding, if you at least tried and ALMOST hit that home run, you are a hero. Why do you think that is? Is this proof that skateboarding is truly NOT a sport? Is breaking down barriers and boundaries in Skateboarding not relatable to any other culture? Will some of these tricks EVER be actually landed? We asked various pros their take and pinpointed notable famous tricks that were never landed; such as the Jamie Thomas "Leap Of Faith", Nyjah Huston and Ryan Sheckler attempting Backside Flip down El Toro 20, Chris Joslin attempting 360 flip down el toro, Heath Kirchart's iconic massive kickflip as well as his insane Lipslide and Ali Boulala vs the Lyon 25 stair in France. The video also features Aaron "Jaws" Homoki trying Heelflip down el toro and Dane Burman trying to Hardflip El Toro. Interviews include, Paul Rodriguez, Torey Pudwill, Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole, Jamie Thomas, Jamie Foy, Dane Burman, Ronnie Creager, Jaws, Chris Joslin, Tim O'Connor, Mark Appleyard, Ryan Decenzo and Stefan Janoski. And of course, we threw in some Tony Hawk Pro Skater (THPS) footage. Be sure to check out Shrimpdaddy's "El Toro" Movie premiering today...do you think somebody backside flips el toro in the movie?!
Congratulations to Nyjah Huston on winning SLS Apex in Las Vegas!

The difference between not landing a trick and not making a home run is that people have made home runs before, but these skaters were attempting stuff that had never been done, and maybe wasn't even possible. That takes a lot of courage to attempt, and that alone is respectable.
Another great video!
!!!
Great point
It doesn't even take anything away from the attempt if someone comes along and makes it. Seeing Jaws struggle at Lyon 25 just made Ali's hungover attempts even more impressive to me. That fact that he made it proves Ali right, he knew it was possible, even when other pros called him insane for even trying such a ridiculous thing.
I've seen (I'm sure every skater has seen) gaps and stuff that would be bad ass but are most likely impossibilities. But if someone tried one of those spots and didn't land it, I would still be impressed.
Chris Joslin’s fall on that 3 flip is the saddest missed trick of all time IMO. That one is just sad, because he popped it and landed it perfectly.
Truth
That counts. 😊
It's not a miss
It's a make
His truck failed it counts
Nah, yea that definitely counts as a make in my book, he landed it and rolled away, he didn’t land and stick and fly off his board, he rolled away for a sec, that definitely counts 100%
To me its a make but im sure to him its a remake.
Milton Martinez broke his leg trying that kickflip into the carwash bank and then went back years later, got the clip, which ended up being trick of the year and he was named SOTY. I think that proves Chris Cole’s point about Jamie Thomas and the Leap of Faith
Ooooo
but he broke his leg trying an ollie, not a kickflip
@@elliottwoods5636 yeah he broke it while trying an Ollie but he clearly says in an interview that he was there to kickflip it
@@Garylookslikeacatfish i don't understand how it could be a missed trick if it wasn't even attempted, but ok
I remember we went to the leap of faith two days after thrill of it all came out & looked at it. We skated that school all the time & never even looked at that gap because it was so far beyond what we thought was even possible. That gap looked like suicide at the time.
👍👍👍
IT STILL LOOKS LIKE SUICIDE, to me at least 😂
When Joslin said “my tre flip” I felt that
Lol
I respect he acknowledged he didn't land it
How exactly did you "feel" that? You didn't do it 🫠
That Heath Kirchart lipslide is burned in my brain. But really, that whole part is legendary, along with the song. Crazy no one else has stepped up to that rail.
So gnar
Jason Jones boardslid it back in the early 2000s. Other than that I've never seen someone else try it.
@@bobbystax6177 wow, good pull. Hadn't thought about that in many years
Was that in the credits of sight unseen or this is skateboarding? Another one heath had like that was that second floor balcony ollie in Mindfield
25 steps is insane. Ollied a 12 back in my prime, 52 now. Knees still hurt just watching.
Nuts
52 stairs?! lol
@@BulletProofBacon Still skating at 52 and used to do some decent sized gaps way back when. Not 52 steps, that's just ludicrous.
@@dwayneandrews2059 you fell for the troll
@@BulletProofBacon Easy to troll a geezer, haha. Get back to me when you've been skating for over 4 decades. Keep ripping whippersnappers. My body is toast.
90 percent of doing a trick is developing the courage and confidence to even attempt it.
Truth!
Psychology plays a massive part. Some days u land stuff, then next day u struggle, coz u aren't feeling it.
This is so true. What most people don't realize about skateboarding is how scary it actually is. Even ollieing down your first set of 2 stairs or dropping in on a 4 foot quarter pipe is SCARY at first! It's such a psychological battle to get that one attempt where you truly commit and go for it.
Love these videos. Keep 'em coming.
Thank you for the support!
This channel is a gold mine and the future. Keep going!
Thanks, will do!
Thanks!
There’s also a case of where the fail is more famous than the make. Josh Casper’s huge drop from Osiris’ The Storm. Everyone remembers the attempt, very few people know he actually landed it later.
Oooo
Very true! Interesting
Loved that vid. Wish I had all my skate tapes from back then. Jerry Hsu's part in that was one I definitely watched over and over.

Was waiting for a new vid ❤
❤❤❤
I still remember getting Sorry on VHS,and bringing it to my friends house. A bunch of us watched it for the first time in his basement, and when Ali tried the 25, we freaked out. I've never experienced another moment like that, where all of us just jumped up and screamed, it was pandemonium! It just seemed so far past what was possible. I still remember my friend telling me about Kircharts kickflip, before seeing it myself. Those guys just operated on another level of existence.

fantastic. love these so much.
Glad you like them!

Great breakdown of why the appeal is there compared to landed tricks. Another Banger Chase

Aah, the 2nd ABD, Almost Been Done, quite the category. Cool segment ! I need more Tim O'Connor in my life.

Could watch Tim O'Connor talk all day
Ahh, but ABD is already used for 'Already Been Done'! I propose NBD for 'Nearly Been Done'

Yeah bro, best topic for vid!!! You shouldn’t be ashamed of not getting a trick, but you should maybe be ashamed of doing a collab with Gary V.

I feel like leap of faith is the most famous but Heath Kirchart’s kickflip has got to be my favorite. I also love when he lip slides the rail and just demolishes the board
Iconic
I feel like at the time I remember the leap of faith being unbelievable, that someone tried that. But tbh looking back now, it really isn't the greatest trick never landed. It's insane but I know plenty of skaters that could attempt that. I've seen someone attempt something very similar on east Coast And now it's not the highest level ollied. He gets a lot of props for starting the whole gnarly trend for sure, he's the original but unfortunately for him he was far surpassed. He did a lot of buck stuff but it the tricks didn't age well. His parts did but tricks not. It's a trick that many skaters who are off one would think it could be tried. So idk him claiming the most insane trick almost done, is a little far fetched. It was memorable, it won't be in the future
Absoutely baffled as to how this channel isn't bigger with the quality of content it releases.
We’re workin on it!
🙏🙌
4:05 - the slow-mo Ellington " _faawwkin' shit!_ " still rings in my ears like it was yesterday.
!!!
I always wondered when it plays slowed down in the vid. Did Ellington have dreads then? Watch it ha
Legend has it Chris' robbery is why the set is locked up behind bars now.
Oh and as for anybody lying to themselves saying it counted because his truck warped/broke, I hope you understand how ridiculous that sounds -- by that logic Jamie landed the LoF and Ali landed the Lyon 25 before Jaws. Chris himself doesn't count it, but (according to a recent interview that iirc is on this channel) he was satisfied enough to know that he COULD'VE landed it, and that if he were to go back and pave over the bumpers/pop open the gate today it would just be to satisfy fans.
The El Toro tre is still up for grabs, and (I think largely due to Chris' attempts) it's an inevitable matter of time before someone rolls away with it - and they won't be considered the 2nd person to do it either.
🙌

Attempting a home run and not getting it sounds way less painful and potentially dangerous than what I saw here. ❤

I thought I saw an interview with Phelps and Sheckler where he said he backside flipped el toro
👀
I like the idea of having a slam ending your part as being a cliffhanger 😅. Like watching Elissa in welcome to hell, did she go back or was that game over?
So good
Very true!
The bravery and insanity behind stuff like this always amazes me. Like to attempt this shit without safety gear is other wordly because i wouldn't even try it with a bubble wrap suit on lol. All joking aside, major respect to these dudes.
Yup!!!
I’m already on my way than because I can’t land shit 😂

Bullshit dad board you got that back 5 oh last week 😮😮😅... these tricks are stomach churning dudes have died falling off of less
DAD BOARD!!!!WHATS UP!!
Love that Joslin was the one to bring up his tre, even he knows just getting close to that shits absolutely insane
💯
Janoski is such a chill dude.
Yup
The missed tricks can also inspire the next generation to take it on - seeing someone get so close and fail makes the next person want to make it happen for the skateboarding community. Everyone in skateboarding wants to run it back and make the impossible possible
💯
These dudes have guts man, that's for sure
💪
It’s really because you risked it all for your passion, takes an unstoppable spirit to even try

Decenzos Frontside flip over the Davis gap always hits to me. Wish he would've gotten it. He had it
😇
You got to put it all on the line and ride or die to achieve great heights ❤
🙏🙏🙏
I feel like what makes tricks iconic is rather or not the spot is currently accessible. Because the question of how iconic the leap of faith is and how less than a handful have attempted really boils down to how their is not much currently the same or similar to leap of faith, in my opinion
❤❤
An honorable mentions for tricks attempted are Brian Wenning Switch Heelflip down Love Park 4 Set. As well as Rick McCrank Nollie Hardflip down Carlsbad Gap.
!!!
LMFAOOO joslin putting his own miss as the second most famous almost make.
Lol
Love bore Chris Cole didn’t even hesitate to answer “if Jamie Thomas landed the leap of faith would it would it still be iconic”? Yeah it would of been iconic for sure, that leap of faith would of been hectic 🧡💯

Hey Chase! I had an idea that would maybe help you out!
I've noticed your "I used to skate" videos doing really well and on the Nine Club they chatted about broke skateboarders which got me thinking about a series you would be so suited for... "i used to be pro"
There are so so so MANY pros i used to look up to and they just... vanished! Where are they now? Why did they leave the industry? What are they into or up to now?
I really hope you build upon this because there are SO MANY legends that have become myths. 👊

A think an interesting part of this is all the tricks landed but weren't filmed

I feel like a lot of stuff has gone down undocumented that would have been crazy to see
🙌🙌🙌
Imagine if Tony hadn't landed that 900 on live tv
👀
Then Taz Pappas probably would’ve got it.
@@oopsydaizi3s824 didn't Taz land his first one like 10 years later on a megaramp?
It has always felt like tricks landed by not rolled away are what really mattered here. Bails aren't really ever looked back the same unless the person put one to feet. That commitment of trying to stick it and landing board to both feet is really what's being discussed here. It takes major risk to do that part, bails without landing on the board just aren't that dangerous and everyone respects those who gave it a try to stick it.
!!!
Every skater has a bucket list of sends. It’s not about succeeding it’s just about knowing you put your blood sweat and tears on the line and gave it your all 💯

Joslins tre flip is a make for sure!

@@storied_skateboarding lmao yeah
😢😢😢
😢😢😢
This is random but y’all should do a episode on sacking how bad and the aftermath
Lol
Leap of faith to me is probably the most unrealistic land of all of these, that gap is an ankle/ leg snapper although jamie is a legend for even trying it, i don't encourage anyone to try it
!!
Ali B..”my aaasss” lost count how many times I watched that one
its out
😊
I love it how Joslin doesn’t consider his tre flip a make. He literally rode away.
Lol it’s debatable!
Oh man it's definitely up for debate. I personally would consider it a make but a landing like that is not going to make it on any part. Sucks that el Toro is pretty much unskateable now.
Not tryin to take away tricks thats been done on some huge gaps, stairs etc..but only few will stand out for the long run..Make or not..Leaf of Faith, Scheklers costo kf, Duffys double kinker etc
!
The difference is obvious: when the trick is made, it's no longer an NBD. Therefore, people usually don't come trying to repeat it. This opens up a line of thought that perhaps other skaters also can do the trick, but they just weren't the first to try.
But when a trick is not made, it's kinda not made by everyone. Everyone is free to come and try it, to prove that they can do it while the first one to try it failed. And then time passes and you don't hear anyone making the trick, it becomes some kind of proof that the skater who merely attempted it has really been pushing the limit of the impossible.
True!!!
The Ollie 25 imo is the most iconic as a random from italy
👏👏👏
These not lands are more famous than all the skate video that have been released in the last years. Way better too.
😅
maan dat 360 flip landed stuck on me still
Truth!
Ali Boulala on that stair is the craziest hands down.
💪
The fact that we use “Leap of Faith” to describe anything that is remotely scary, tells you how famous that trick and spot is! Even if the thing we’re talking about is a figurative “leap”. It’s turned into a figure of speech for all of us.
🙌
Come on nyjah.. get it for the record book
💪
That 3 flip down el toro, totally fucking count that! Haha..
!!!
❤ skateboarding ❤
🙏
skateboarding is the coolest thing ever
It truly is
❤
It's the skill that's impressive. Being able to hit a home run in baseball is kind of expected. No skateboarder is expected to land a 25 stair or even attempt it. It's more of an artform than a traditional sport.
🙌🙌🙌
If leap off faith was still around, and if I had the ability to try to kickflip it,I would literarly ask Jamie for permission lol. That gap is his,and it would feel like taking it away from him. He deserves it for jumping down such a huge gap and testing the waters to see what happens.
☺☺
I don’t think it would be taking it away from him. It would be more like adding to the legacy imo. Same as Jaws at Lyon, he hasn’t taken anything away from Ali in my opinion. It’s how progression happens. Somebody has to try something first whether they succeed or fail, in order for the next guy to realise that it’s actually possible.
@@spunjedd I can't really appriciate what Jaws did on Lyon. Went there with gloves, some special board, and he grabed it. Is completly different then going there with a regular street board and just straight up olliing. That still has to be done and what Ali did was gnarlier.
@@armin38822 I can appreciate it. But that’s what I was saying, it doesn’t take away from Ali at all because of what you said. That’s still Ali’s spot.
Ryan and nyjah bs flip eltoro. Heath kirchart lipslide in ending credits of sight unseen. Leap of faith jaws could have easily landed a melon and wouldn't be surprised if he could have kickflip melon it. Wow I didn't even see this whole video yet and they mentioned heath lipslide👍 btw ali ollie attempt on the 25 is more impressive than jaws grab. Ollie is more harder without grabbing the board.
🙌
Leap of faith. We were jumping this thing all day in THPS because of the Chief😂
😂🙌
First off these are NBDS. skateboarding takes more pain, fear, awareness, precision, and courage then any homerun or 3 pointer ever made. Skateboarding breaks you until you are absolutely free. Skateboarders got the drop......ON EVERYTHING
💯💯
The skater is the ball, the hitter is the trick, the fan is the spot and the filmer is the outfielder that almost caught it. I dunno that’s how I see that analogy…
Just don’t overthink it
@@storied_skateboarding hahah love it
Jaws would have tried Leap of Faith if it could have and I'd have put money on him landing it.
!!!
The leap of faith is sick, but I bet Jaws would have landed it by now.
The Lyon 25, I remember watching the video and first thing i thought was "why is he jumping from a stairset he can never clear", until he actually makes it to the flat.
!!!
epitAmE, sure
Haha whoopsies
Lol
Trying and failing isn't true failure; failing to even try is. The only "failure" of any these skaters was a failure to accept limitations; to be bound by what others decided was or wasn't possible. These attempts aren't iconic because they were failures, the failures are iconic because they were attempted.
Truth
