    Nice review this, I've just bought this on eBay for half the RRP. Used one a few years back for a wedding I covered and the best results came from this lens. Looking forward to owning one and this review helps confirm that. Cheers

    Nice one after humming and arring over a 85 mm I’ve just taken the plunge and px my sigma 50 mm art lens for this as I just didn’t like how close I was having to get to take a portrait with the 50mm and also that 1.2 bokeh I just can’t wait to experience that I’ll be shooting it adapted onto the r6 mk2

    I just bought this lens and am having problems nailing my focus, I back button focus so I'll switch it to the shutter button and try that. I did take some photos of flowers and nailed the focus with those, and wow did they come out amazing!

    Really enjoyed the video! I'd definitely like to see how you've come to work and understand the 85's focal length and DOF. What have you experienced is a good general distance to be standing away from the subject in order to get an adequate portrait of someone's face?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  9 лет назад

      +James Cassell Hi James. Thanks for the comment. On a full frame Canon, to obtain something similar to your RUclips photo would need a distance of about 1.2 to 1.5 metres. At this distance, f/1.2 can give lovely results but sometimes it's just a bit too shallow. I tend to go for f/1.8-f/2.8 to ensure that the ears are in focus and allow for a tiny bit of subject movement. Even just a tiny sway is enough to kill sharpness at f/1.2.
      It does depend on what look you're going for and how controlled your subject is. As I mentioned in the video, this lens can be tricky to use but when you get it right, the results are stunning.

    I'll tell you this: I've owned this Canon EF85mm f1.2L II lens in the past, twice actually, then sold it to buy the Zeiss Otus 85mm f1.4 last year, which blew the Canon 85mm f1.2L II out of the water. And then last weeks a hideous thing happened. I bought a new Canon 1Dx Mark II which had new software that caused the Zeiss Otus 85mm f1.4 to have SERIOUS exposure problems rendering the Otus useless. Google this on the internet. Google Zeiss Otus 1Dx exposure. So I sold the Otus and I bought the Canon EF85mm f1.2L II again. I love it.

    • @tdcattech

      I'm not familiar with the Zeiss. What was the main plus point over the Canon?

    • @davidjewels
      @davidjewels 7 лет назад +1

      it out resolves the Canon and it has no chromatic aberrations, no color fringing, and it has a higher transmission rate

    I have this lens and everything you said is exactly how I feel about it. You're absolutely right, if you get the picture right it is amazing but it takes a lot of work. I noticed that it was very hard to focus but I also realized it is a heavy glass so unless you're using your tripod, your arm will get tired and it will be difficult to have no shame in the picture. Again thank you!

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  8 лет назад +1

      +FAST GIRLS FINISH FIRST Totally right. I was doing a shoot yesterday (just a casual shoot of their children) and I used my monopod for the first time to reduce the lifting. Using a monopod is limiting in someways but for some shots it helped enormously. It also reduced the strain on my arms so when I was handheld, my arms were more stable.

      As I mention, I find that it's incredibly easy to miss the shot on this lens (mainly due to the incredibly shallow DOF and heavy focusing) but when you get it right, it looks stunning.

    Thanks for this great review! I own the 135 f2 Lence and now I am not sure if i should sale and by the 85 f1.2 for outdoor portrait shopting, what do you think
    thanks

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  8 лет назад

      +Gennadi Wedel I haven't used the 135mm f/2.0 but from what I know it's an outstanding lens with fast auto focus (the 85mm does not have this) and great image quality. The 135mm focal length is the only thing that would bother me for portrait use (depending on you're environment). That's a bit too much reach. Tough one really. It's quite a price hike to the 85mm but don't let that put you off :-)

    • @rainyblain
      @rainyblain 8 лет назад +2

      +Gennadi Wedel i wouldn't, if you already have the 135 id say its pretty close to the 85m anyway....and i wish i had the 135, despite owning the 85 1.2.

    Good pro and con video. Just wanted to clarify the rear element is not completely flush with the mount. There is an approx. 1 mm lip there that will take a hit before the glass will. =)

    • @tdcattech

      I re-checked this and you're dead right. It's bloody close :-) but there is a tiny, tiny raised lip of metal as you say.

  • @hermanlugo9999
    @hermanlugo9999 7 лет назад +6

    Good review. Short (11 mins) and to the relevant points. My only comment now is that any medium or long lens, due to their longer focal length, are not going to be best in small interiors. That should not be considered a con against the Canon EF85mm f/1.2 L lens or for that matter any other 85mm lens from any other brand. It's just the nature of the lens selected. For small interiors the "normal" or "wide" lenses are more functional, or so the general rule goes.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 лет назад

      That's a fair point. It's a con to me as it prevents me using it as much as I would like in my personal circumstances. I suppose I wanted to make people aware that even on a full frame camera, it's still pretty long. You're right though. It's not a con. It is what it is :-)

    I have done review of this Canon 85mm and Sigma Art 85mm about focusing issues... Please check it out whi is interested.. Also you forgot to mention that with canon is not possible to use manual focus on different camera. Canon requieres to be connected to canon body in order to use its manual focus.. it is useless on Panasonic GH4 with aputure speedbooster

  • @wraith6575

    I'm interested in this lens. Has anyone else had to do a micro adjustment to their to help reduce the amount of missed focuses? I have a Canon 5D Mark iii. Thanks in advance.

    • @mikewinburn
      @mikewinburn 7 лет назад

      yes, i had to do a +1 on my lens... but you might not have to... thats a result of each lens coupled with each body. That is to say, if i gave you my lens (that i had to do a +1) you might not have to do any adjustments as it matches your body...or you might have to do + /- 5... so, its really just luck of the draw.

    how does this compare with 50mm 1.2? which is more useful?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 лет назад

      More useful is an impossible one to answer as it depends on what you're doing :-)
      Both very similar lenses from a build quality and image quality standpoint. I have owned both but sold the 50mm years ago due to focus issues. They have since sorted that problem.
      It's hard to get the beautiful bokeh with the 50mm due to the difference in focal length but there's not that much difference and 50mm can be much more practical to use. I use a 50mm f/1.4 and would love the f/1.2 but the cheaper 50mm is easily good enough for my needs.

  • @klaas-jelmersixma6566

    Very nice post, you have new subscriber now! this lens is really difficult to focus! Also the focus ring is in my opinion too sensitive! In comparison to the 70-200 2.8 of canon the lense isn't as sharp. But the bokeh is awesome... This lens suffers a lot from color fringing, and chromatic aberration. You have to fix this in photoshop later... I wil be posting a vlog about how to work with this lense very soon!

    • @wiraphotography7805
      @wiraphotography7805 6 лет назад

      Klaas-Jelmer Sixma sorry, i thinks its sharper than 70-200 but the color from 70-200 is better imo. Cheers... but i am really waiting for you video...

    which should i buy sigma 85mm 1.4 art or canon 85mm 1.2 ???

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 лет назад

      :-) The impossible question to answer. The Sigma is amazing value and costs much less than the Canon. Negatives, it's a bit bigger and is slightly slower. Positives, it doesn't suffer the same level of chromatic aberration as the Canon.
      I love the Canon and wanted to own this lens to use and just to own (sounds silly but that's how people work). The smart answer is probably the Sigma as you could get another lens or more kit with the difference.

    Are you saying you abandoned back button focus with this lens?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  8 лет назад +2

      +Richard Raymond Not entirely but if I am hand holding the camera, yes. Maybe I'm just getting old and sway around too much :) or my subjects move around too much but I find the DOF so razor sharp at close distance and f/1.2-f/1.8 that I need the time from achieving focus to taking the shot to be as short as possible.
      Now, if I were using a tripod and a model, I would always use the back button. It's by far my preferred method but I found I was getting more 'keepers' with the shutter button.

    how these lens will work in my canon t5i? :O

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 лет назад

      It will work fine (I have used these with a 600D body a few years ago). You just have to consider two things...
      • It's a hefty lens both in size and weight and dwarfs the lighter smaller Rebel body. This isn't a problem but the balance is a bit off.
      • The Rebel is a 1.6 crop so the focal length of this lens will be 136mm which is actually quite long and may not suit your requirements.
      Aside from that, it's a wonderful lens and really shows how good the Rebel body is with great glass.

      Before spending @ $2K, consider the Canon EF 85 mm f/1.8 Ultrasonic lens. Are you a pro making a living with your camera? Are you a serious enthusiast with money to spend for the love of photography or a beginner shooting to post in Facebook just for fun? For a fraction of the cost for the 1.2 L lens you can buy the 1.8 which is quite good glass. Also please consider the type of photography you mostly shoot and whether you plan to keep shooting with a Rebel crop body for long term before investing money in too many lenses. The crop factor changes the point of view of the image. See comment by TDCatTech.

      +Jens Grimm I see what you mean. :-) It's a slightly strange thing to say. My point was that it's actually a perfect focal length for so many things (hence the reason to buy it) but can become a little long when shooting in smaller locations and rooms. Never happy!!
