Working with Canon EF 85mm 1:1.2 L II USM___Focus problem

- This Canon EF 85mm 1:1.2 L II USM, is technically an interesting lens (I didn't found any service manual for this lens).
The lens had really problems with the auto focus and also with the manuel focus, because the system work's in the way "focus by wire". It work's the way that the focus ring do not have direct contact with the lens system but via encoder electronic and the USM motor.
But the USM motor will over the year's of use getting worn out because of bad material / wrong construction, but also because of the very, very heavy front lens group will worn out the focus helicoid's.
Also, in this lens the way too less amount of grease on the focus helicoid's was not good.
It should simply last much, much longer compare to the high price for this lens...

Just got this lens full price from a shop 5 weeks ago and I'm already having the same issue externally...amazing video though, thanks!
i'm everytime impressed about your skills and knowledge. i once try repair my cheap tamron lens. in ends in a 3d tetris nightmare^^
Thank's Lukas, I can understand you because it can sometimes be a real "nightmare", to work with some brand's lenses and camera's.
That's why I take a lot's of pictures, or making film's about the really complicated stuff, just to have a kind of backup... It's not everything you get info about on the internet, that's why I make my film's , to help other's.
Cheers
Kenneth
You saved my lens, it was stuck. Well done, keep up thw good work.
Thank's :-)
Thank you for Great Video. Now I know how to take the dusts out of the inside the lens. God bless you
Dear Mike,
Your channel is great, I already subscribed!
I would like to ask if opening the front optical element of the Canon EF 50mm 1.2 is the same as this 85mm 1.2.
I need to remove some dust that has entered the lens.
Unfortunately I didn't know that in the back glass, the electronic contacts, there is no seal. I blew it with an air spray and a lot of dust entered. Thank you!
Thank you very much the video help me a lot
BIG thank you!
definitely problem with barrel under focus engine after a fall.
I just repaired a 85mm f1,2 II 2012 . At my lens focus has only worked up to 2 meters. Now everything is perfect
Tell please how did you fix it?
I also can exactly understand how to fix by you explanation, can you help us?
Fascinating to watch, thanks for taking the time to film this. I'm wondering if the brushes are worn, and it's not making enough power to move the motor?
..Joe
Thank you for this educational video. At 39:40, what kind of detergent are you using to clean the lens? Is it alcohol based?
Thanks form your video. Since it doesn't work I would have liked you to take it apart further to see what may have gone wrong.
Sorry, but I give it back to my friend. BUT if it was my lens I would have taken it apart ;-)
Thank you for this video. Is it easy to remove the elements from the front element group? I bent the filter ring and have the spare part, I just don't know how to remove the glass elements from the front part. Please help me! :)
Is there a way to make this lens work manually all the time?
I have the same lens from the video but the autofocus has already been ruined 2 times so I prefer to turn it manual but the ring is very slippery.
Good Job!Thanks for the video
I dropped the lens accidentally and the uv filter had been broken. I have the same lens with the same problem, I didn't open it yet. What type of screwdriver you used ? There is a high pitch short sound when it is focusing. Look likes the motor is still in function. Do you think can it be fixed by DIY ?
but you use wera tools from germany not the ones you link to? i'm confused. :(
problem i have with this lens is manual focus does not work but autofocus is fine.
I got the Loctite 222, am I supposed to poke a small hole in the plastik tip ?
Do you keep yours in the fridge ?
Dorf Schmidt No, Dorf, you have to draw in the "ring" at the lower part of the nozzle, do it gently it has to say "click". And when you do not use it just put the lid on again, it has to give a "click".
Cheers
Kenneth
Hello! Is a small play of the focusing ring is this normal or loose bolts?
Thank you im gonna try to clean the back of my lense.
Mvh Erik
The way you are opening the locking ring in 13:35 is not correct. You just have to pull the whole focus ring and you have to turn it around until it pops up. In this way you are just going to ruin the ring or other parts. Hope that helps :) Thanks for the video :)
Thank's for the info :-) Semir
Definitely the USM ring motor is partial dead. Did you solve the problem at the end?
Thanks for sharing.
I was also sure that it was the defective USM, so it was not possible for me to fix it :-(
@@mikeno62 you can fix a defective usm. you need a "conductive paint" and you can fix all broken USMs. i can send you pictures how you do that.
@@mikeno62 if you hear so noise when shaking it and if you cant move the whole focusscale than the gear is losy. you have to remove the scale and use a lensspanner to fix the gear.
@ hola laurin, ¿puede decirme cómo se repara el motor usm ?, tengo un problema de 300mm 2.8 non (mk1) con este problema
@ my mail is danelmuchu@outlook.com
also Canon told me they will swap the lens, no idea how much they will charge but they don't fix it as of spring 2020 at the least, no idea how long that policy was put in place.
Thanks for posting this video, it really saved me for a lot of $$$... well done. I also like your dentist tool.... to me it is a musthave>;o)
Hi
I bought a Nikon 70-200 f4 optically perfect for 439€ on ebay with VR defective. Fixing it at Nikon's is too expensive. Is it possible fixing it at home or quite delicate?
Thank you
The biggest problem today with repair lenses and cameras is, to buy the spare-parts.
It's not that delicate to work with that lens, you just need good tool's and of course
a good amount of patience.
I have made film's about that lens because it has by accident drop' into drinking water, NOT saltwater...
It turn out to be a big success, because the lens work's perfect again, here you can see how I did that
in 5 part's film, this the first part:

Nikon won't sell you spare parts. Sometimes an adjustment is necessary, which may require some special equipment and software.
Where to buy the USM and the focus ring?
The key with this lens or the 50mm1.2L is to reverse what we were tough in school, compose first, move the focusing point to the eye so you know you get good focus, do not move at all and ask your subject not to move at all either then take the shot; 99.9% of the times you will get very sharp photos. You might have to micro adjust it to some cameras, take the time is worth i!
Yep. That’s the trick!
Is there a way to repair the worn out motor ?
I think there is a way..., by exchange the USM motor...
I am having exactly thesame problem with my 85mm 😊
Back again just cleaned my rear element took a few tries to get all the dust off. Like putting on a screen protector staying calm and patient pays off. Canon will no longer clean these lens well on the inside they wont.
I can’t twist off the front element is there a screw I’m missing
same here... I´ve tried with so much strength and did not move an inch
I have also same problem and mine is also l lens but mine is just new
I think it should be possible to fix it, but only if the lens is still under warranty (it's just a guess)
10:20 does anyone have a tip on how to get the front group loose? mine is so tight that i have really high concern of ripping the lens apart when twisting. it does not move an inch.
I have the same problem. did you manage to get it open?
@@ikev0423 Same here. I tried to twist of the fronnt group on TWO lenses - not one of theme even moved for a nano-twist. And i am rather strong...

@@dizzcrizz I used some tools, and still no luck. So I gave up and sold the lens 😌

10:15 Trying to remove the front element, sooo tight.. no lucky at all.
I got it, FINALLY!!! I went to Homedepot and bought a pair of gardening gloves.. lol, works fine! Now i have a dust free 85mm 1.2 mk1 and 1.2 mk2.. Love it!
@@hemidesign i've makes so much strength and did not move an inch...
@@brugom it's hard.. another tip, you can use a oil filter car tool to remove.. make sure you wrap the lens element with some insulation tape first..
I bought a pair of gardening gloves, and tried my best to roating the front element as the video suggested, still can't move one inch. Is there any tricks to roate it? It's a pleasure If u could tell me the trick, many thanks
