    This is such a practical video, it blows my mind that someone finally thinks about photography practially on the internet. There are almost no photography channels like this, RUclips is flooded with "Why I switched to Sony" paid advertisement, and other tech geek videos like those....
    I perfectly agree with everything that you said, 2 years ago I have switched to DPAF for all my portrait photography work (first the 6Dii now the EOS R), and it's a really big revolution. The accuracy and speed with ANY lens is just amazing.
    I used the Sigma 85 Art lens for a while, but it had a such an enormous front-torque, that I could not hold it for hours, my wrist hurt... The 85 1.2 is much more balanced, and in specific scenarios it creates smoother background. I don't care about 300% sharpness, and the CA can be easily corrected, if it's needed (generally I shoot front-lit, so it's not a big deal).
    The output of the 1.2 is just out of this world, and the lens has really quickly earned back it's money. (even quicker than the 24-70, which is not a small thing)

    •  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you for your feedback. I always appreciate the opinion of some else using the gear, do you think the Eos R is much better than the 6D II or are they similar? Thanks for your answer, DIrksón!

    • @EDCGadgets
      @EDCGadgets 5 лет назад

      @ The EOS R is very similar to the 6Dii when it comes to portrait photography. The output is similar (slightly less saturated, but similar), and the face recognition works just a tiny little bit better. And of course you get the advantage of the EVF with the EOS R, it's a really really good EVF.
      I shoot portraits, and the reason why I upgraded to the EOS R was simple, I wanted to see the facial expression of the people better. 99% of the people attending to my portrait shoots are having their first photo session in their life, and it's important for me, that the EVF shows their reaction much better. It's also easier to see when "I got the perfect moment", it's quite a big deal for me.
      So it's interesting, but the EVF itself was easily worth the 800 euro difference.

    I can feel the positive vibe and the passion you have for photography , I bought this lens after I seen this review you know why ? Cause I want to show my kids how we will look in the future as a parents , well said pictures has a value but not just In the future even in present time cause it’s one sec shot , and we have only one life shot to live just like the click of the camera 👌.

    Fantastic honest review thank you. I’ll be getting one now for my 5dsr. My canon with the large file sizes is not the fastest camera but with an 85mm should give time to think more of the shot rather than just firing off several shot a second and seeing which is sharp and good
    Thank you again, there isn’t many out there on these channels taking about the pictures just the technology behind it which I don’t care really

      Did you end up getting it? I've got the same camera (slow and clunky, but just love the SLR-tech in general, and the high resolution of this camera in particular), and this is may be the last lens I have my eyes on. My lens collection is otherwise complete, for what I need and want.

    A very unusual intro :) You are lucky that the lens didn't suffer any damage when the tripod blew over. I've seen quite a few reviews of this lens on RUclips, and yours is by far the best, particularly in showing how this lens may work on some of the latest cameras, and how it's rendering is still quite special, and sometimes fabulous. Thank you for this extensive review of this great lens.

    I am delighted that many gear heads gave negative reviews about this lens, as it isn't designed to be use by the majority. It is for the artists and passionate photographers who favors the overall rendering of an image over clinical sharpness and ease of use. Creating Art has nothing to do with practicality.
    Among 6L lenses that i own, the 851.2 is my most favorite amongst them all.
    By the way, i am just a short guy and only weighs 118 lbs. But whenever i am traveling abroad shooting "guerilla style" and carrying 2 full frame bodies.. the 85 L rarely detached from my 5DIII.
    I do have a chance to test the 85 1.4L once. Yes it is "sharp" and with IS, but the rendering of the 85 1.2 is unmatchable.
    If you really love ethereal dreamy image, this is the lens for you. For me, the "imperfections" (price, weight, responsiveness etc.) of this lens is justified.
    Like any other artistic endeavor.. one needs skill and practice to master the 85 1.2L.

    • @smaakjeks
      @smaakjeks 5 лет назад

      "Creating Art has nothing to do with practicality."
      Of course it does. It's just more difficult, and you get more failed shots.
      If the lens *were* sharper, and had IS, it would not harm your artistic expression one iota.

    Thank you very much for your videos and all information you provide
    I have same setup and thanks to you i orderd my 85mm f1.2 II
    Update..
    I received my lens today, my first impression is like this thing is dream!! Just wow.
    lens is very sharp compared to my other non L lenses, even at f1.2 which is the only aperture i used.
    One thing i always hear people talk about is the focus speed, i find it very fast and accurate with my 6D mK II
    I tested it with my kids @f 1.2
    from infinity yes it is bit slow, but once it foucuses on face and catch the eye with spot focus it will never miss any shot even when they move little.
    very expensive lens, but i expect it to last forever
    really happy to have this lens and appreciate your reviews.

    Thank you for this extremely sensible review. I used to own this lens and became frustrated with it along the lines of your opening remarks. I recently added a Canon R to my kit and I suspected the lens would be a good pair because of the eye detection. I assure you that it is. It hardly ever misses. With this lens being so mature and the RF version just released there is no shortage of them on the secondary market and they can be had at bargain prices. Finally a sensible view and approach right here on RUclips. Who knew? Subscribed. Thanks again.

    Thanks for this review. At the moment I shoot with a Canon 6D and I have the 50mm 1.8 STM and the 85mm 1.8 lens. If I were going to upgrade right now, I would go for the 6D MK 11 over the EOS R because the eye and face detection on the EOS R doesn't work in continuous focus tracking mode but only for single shots. I hope that they change this with a firmware upgrade but it's unlikely. They'll probably add it to their new EOS R Professional version. I only stumbled across your channel recently and love watching your videos out on the street. It would be great if you could do a video in English where you show what you say to people when you first approach them. Keep up the good work.

    Great review. I think the value on this lens will slowly decline a bit once again, some people are switching to the EF 85mm f1.4 IS lens, so more will be appearing on the used market, and the RF 85mm f1.2 development has been announced for their new system in two variants, probably fixing the CA quick AF and becoming a bit lighter and more balanced, but probably also around 2500 euros, that is way more expensive. I will consider getting a like-new copy at the right price like all the other 1.4L primes, usually auctions give the best deals, but they require more time.

    I have had this lense for a while and have not used it very much at all. I bought a 7d mark ii, this 85 mm lens and an ef 24-70mm 2.8 L from a pawn shop about 4 years ago. I got them all for 1,200 dollars. At the time I was more interested in the camera and had no idea what amazing lenses I got for almost nothing. I tried working with the 85mm but got frustrated because it isn't very easy to use. I love the 24mm very much and use it a lot. After watching your review I am inspired to go out and use the techniques that you use in your video. I have since upgraded my camera to a 5d mark iv. I absolutely love how warm your photos are. What color setting and white balance do you use? Thank you!

    •  3 года назад

      Hi David, thanks for your story. The 5D IV works great in Live View, Autofocus at f1.2 is easy and hits always on point (face recognition). Here you can see how to take great images in camera without any editing at all (all images are straight from the camera jpgs): www.dirkson-photography.com/master/

    •  4 года назад

      I would try to go into full frame, maybe with a 6D II or Eos RP. Add a 50mm f1.8 and you have an incredible combination. The 135mm on the 200d will give you a 200mm look because of the sensor size. You need to go far away to photograph people (or anything actually).

    @charlesazevedo4849 4 года назад

    Dirkson, have you ever had to perform AFMA on this lens and your 6D? What values you got? I have the chance to get one at reasonable value used but mint condition. Actually have got it already. Was doing some calibration manually several shots, different resistances and subject like focusing eye also etc. Found myself in the range of +17/18. Don't know if this is supposed to be like that or if this is an alarm and I should return it?

    •  4 года назад +1

      I don't calibrate as I don't feel confident in it. It is a difficult lens to focus on many older cameras as with the 6D. 6D II and Eos RP is super easy because of the face detection, but on the 6D it often doesn't hit on spot.

    I've been following your channel for quite a while and I can totally relate with your philosophy of buying used gear. That is why I've chosen Canon in the first place. I've been shooting with 6d too for quite a while. Recently I bought 5d mk IV. I bought it used in great condition. I love the dual pixel technology. Most of my lenses I bought used and they are great value. Now that the R system has lunched I bet the prices of the EF glass will go down event further as people start to jump to R native lenses. The EF will probably not hold as much value as the used (although you can still use them via adapter) but they are still great quality lenses. Keep up the good work!

    There just seems something mystical about the 1.2 or am I imagining it?

    •  5 лет назад +2

      I think the f1.4 lens is technical better (and has IS for Video) and the f1.2 is (and has been for a very long time) the Bokeh Cream Machine. For technical best performance the newer is the better, for emotional portraiture the f1.2 might be the one. If you can old both in your hand and take some shots to see the speed and then let your emotions decide. In the end both will get the job done.

    Every time you move your arms the camera growls trying to get into into focus. Very stupid move! Focus your camera first and then turn the auto focus off... very irritating amateur video !

      I hear a lot of frustration between your lines. I hope you will find peace one day. Thank you very for your impression, in the following videos I will use manual focus again. Greetings from Germany, Dirkson!
