  • What's better that 2 Canon 85mm lenses to play with? That's right...3 of the little beasts. In this video we test out and give our recommendations of the trilogy of 85mm beauties. We specifically compare the builds and shooting quality of each and make a bang-for-the-buck comparison and some recommendations for every level of photography. We shoot a daffodil with a light painting technique. I was also lucky enough to have @AshtynMorton stop by for a lovely shoot with all three.
    Which lens won? You're going to have to watch the video to find out...you might be surprised.

    Why didn't you show the photos you shot with each lens?

    I was really curious what's the difference between 1.4 IS and 1.2, but unfortunately I am still curious:( As it was already mentioned 1.2 and 1.4 is not a full stop consequently it's not twice as much light. And yes you can use wide aperature in real situation as well just not this close (as it was demonstrated in the video). DOF is not a definite amount of centimeters (or inches) it depends on the ratio how far you are from the subject (or AF point) and how far is the background. If you shoot your model more than 5meters away, her entire face will be in focus without issue and if the background is far away, you will get a creamy-dreamy background. 1.2 is good because it helps to sepparate the subject of the background. It's extremly helpful when the background is not that specatular. In nature it looks awesome. However 1.4 is still good and I was curious can I tell the difference on a blind test but I didn't find any video of it. I have 85mm 1.2 but it's my friends lens, I'm thinking of buying it (he changed to Sony) but IS sounds great in 1.4 for video (for stills I don't care as IS doesn't help if you shoot portraits - your subject never will be totally still) Anyone who used both 1.4 and 1.2 I gladly listen to the experiences;)

    I know this video is now a few years old. But It is the best video for simple explanation as to the differences in more detail. I have the 1.2 II and was actually considering trading it for the 1.4 L (both great lenses) but the benefits of the 1.4 are not as important to me as the benefits of the 1.2. So thank you for an informative video.

    Hi Bill, many many thanks for your review. I was a whisker away from getting the 1.2 and glad I didn't as my work is similar to your own. I have the 1.8 which gives me great results, but I wanted to step up the quality. I was going for the Sigma 1.4, but the number of out of focus images was unacceptable. You have made my mind up to get the 1.4, so many, many thanks. It was a great, balanced review.
    Regards
    George

    Nice work. I was a little confused. You stated the the 1.2 gives 1 stop off light more then the 1.4. I believe it gives only 1/3 of a more light. However it does give 1 stop of additional light over the1.8. "Just my humble opinion ". Keep up the outstanding tutorials.

    Great comparison video! However F/1.2 to F/1.4 is on a 3rd of a stop so it’s not twice as much the light you’re getting in the sensor. I used all three lens and the 1.4L IS is in my bag as well 😀

    Was that 1.4 a macro? It appears larger than the 1.2. I grew up half-way between Lexington and Morehead! I wonder how the astrophysics major is doing since I was also a physics major. I just traded in all my EF gear to take the plunge into Canon’s RF world and hoping they make an 85 1.4 soon.

    Why is the 1.4 more expensive than 1.2 on KEH

    Hello and great video. I'm a beginner. I'm not quite understanding how you got the dark background with so much light in the room.

    • @ApexFuturesTrader
      @ApexFuturesTrader 4 года назад +1

      because of the distance between the background and the subject. Position of the lights, distance of the camera and the subject, etc.

    i got the canon 85mm f1.8 lens AND THE MAIN REASON YOU BUY THE L LENES FROM CANON IS BECAUSE OF THE BETTER OPTICAL GLASS BUILT INSIDE THEM TO GIVE YOU GOOD QUALITY PHOTOS AND THAT IS IF YOU UNDERSTAND PHOTOGRAPHY AND IN DOOR PHOTO SHOOT LIGHTS AND HOW TO THE CAMERS CONTROL SETTING AND THE FLASH FIRING POWER SETTING

    Do you have the RAW files for the 1.4 and the 1.2 versions? I'd really like to pixel peep these in a studio setting!

    There’s a reason why it’s 1.2 why test each lens with the same aperture it’s not really showing off why you pay so much more $$$
