      Rachel, could you tell me just what it is that causes crypts to 'melt'? Because oddly enough, in my Flex 9, that was the sole plant that took immediately to the tank, while all the others struggled with melt. It's been a bit of a nightmare, that tank, because of the variety of algae problems and struggling plants. All through it, the crypts have powered through, only losing maybe a single leaf or two over several plants, and I think they were more physically damaged by moving the wood a bit. If I knew what the crypts were loving so much, I could see if it was something the Amazon sword, ludwigia repens, dwarf sag (I think, it was unlabelled at the LFS), polyspermia and so on were not liking... As always, thanks for the wonderful tour through the fish room and tips along the way!

      @@annethornton9938 it can be for many reasons, but always "stress" as in the wild they generally grow with leaves out of the water and then during profound dry ir wet periods,lose their leaves to preserve their root structure to regrow when conditions are favorable again

      @@annethornton9938 Interesting question! Because I have (sometimes) had the same experience, depending on which tank I put the crypts in! Two crypts, same type, same store, same day. Two tanks, same substrate, water, etc. Why does one melt, and the other doesn't? Mysteries of the crypt!

    one trick I learned to increase humidity for indoor plants is to put gravel in the bottom of the plant trays and then add water into the tray...the gravel keeps the pot out of standing water and prevents the soil in the pot from getting water logged. Works really well. Just have to add water as it evaporates.

    So lovely to see all the plants growing in the wall, the great stand your husband built you, and a great extra-tank environment for Sid. The clear Command Hooks are brilliant! I've been using clear suction cups with clear hooks attached so I can hang java & Christmas? moss from the walls of my bedside tank, and I'd love to have a near-invisible way to train pothos and other trailing plants to grow up the walls, be they from pots or growing out of my other aquariums. Thanks for another tip!

    I look at your hillstream with envy! I wanted to do something similar as well. In Northern Canada there is no shortage of rocks and bogwood the only thing I would have trouble with is finding an aquarium that size. Not many stores and no one will ship something that massive. Rachel I have seen other YTer aquarists having issues with hair algae and what they did was add some floating plants like salvinia, frogbit, red root floaters, watersprite, to cut down on the amount of light reaching the bottom ot the tank and that seemed to cleat up the algae problems they were having.

      I like to use chicken grit, perlite, and soil.

    • @emmitstewart1921
      @emmitstewart1921 5 лет назад +2

      @@meganmoncure8234 you can replace the perlite with natural aquarium gravel. I find that succulents potted in a perlite mix tend to get top heavy. My basic house plant soil is 1 part coarse vermiculite and three parts coconut coir. I no longer use peat because cacti and succulents need to dry out between waterings and dry peat repels water. Dry coir readily accepts water. If you have a set of sieves, an excellent drainage material is to run common play and from home depot first through a five millimeter screen and then through a one millimeter screen. The fine sand that goes through the one millimeter can be discarded. It will not promote drainage. I start with my basic soil, which drains pretty well to start with and add more of the coarse sand according to the needs of the individual plants. For most cacti and succulents, about one part sand in five parts soil works for me.

    • @jonstfrancis
      @jonstfrancis 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, me too, perlite's not good long term, best used with seedlings. Grit is the way to go. I go something like 50/50 grit/potting compost with some sand thrown in if you have that.
