hey guys! I wanted to give you an update on my 75g waterfall paludarium- the newts never showed back up, so I have decided to just keep it as plant only. I think its looking pretty great, especially after a trim. What do you think??

OMG Rachel. If I had been faced with pruning that tank I would have been stymied. But you make everything look so easy. Under your hand, the end result was gorgeous. You are so talented. We miss your videos. I hope that you can solve your knee problem before next summer's adventure trips. I know how important something like that can be. KC and I are both fully vaccinated and would love to buy some of your surplus, but since you are 2+ hours from us, would it be possible for us to call you to see what you have available in the way of fish? That way we wouldn't be wasting your time or ours, if you don't have anything we need.

If the newts did get out somewhere, they would have turned to jerky somewhere in a dark corner. Happened to my fire belly toads when I was kid. Found them under my couch on the other side of my house after they had disappeared
When I had tripartita in my palu it engulfed everything lol

Overall, I think it looks great. Pruning here and there, and it's back to awesome again.
I saw where Abby posted on Twitt about her back issues, hope the tests came out positive and just a minor tweak. So glad you're enjoying all the travels, I'm certainly enjoying watching those vids. I've gotten quite a few new orchids in now, some real odd looking blooms. Happy that the Dinema orchid is growing good for you. That Bulbophyllum lasciochilum I sent you, mine has gone nuts with growth again, so hopefully new blooms soon. Didn't realize how much I enjoyed your vids, till you cut back on them, so have been watching a few older ones. Still learning so much that I've forgotten over the yrs. FYI cocofiber mats work great when cut to size as a background for both aquarium and terrarium decor and plant attachments. either use stainless steel U clips which can be made out of wire and sphagnum moss to hold moisture for teh roots or crazy glue.

I got a fun project/idea, if you can get a hold of wild neon tetras, can you perform some genetic rescue to the overly inbred neon tetra? Maybe document it too and go over why it’s important to outcross?
*Before I start my rant/comment, I’d like to point out that I am a new fish keeper, but I have been doing my research. Reading through forums(and not just cherry picking, this is a commonly discussed topic), joining communities and reading through posts, and even read some papers provided through those forums about breeding, breeding ethics, and inbreeding of aquarium fish. A lot of what I’m saying and arguing stems from what I have read so far, sources from the early 2000s up to today, and things seem unchanged(for the most part). *
The aquarium hobby is expanding but there are some practices that haven’t changed much; and that is the breeding ethics of fish. People breed fish, they take a small breeding group(bottle necked gene pool, of unknown origin, probably all siblings), then they breed more and sell them as breeding pairs. Further perpetuating the problem of inbreeding.
Now I know inbreeding isn’t so much of a problem with fish(they are simpler organisms further down the food chain, often inhabiting isolated habitats), and people will rely on it to make more fish, but why go as far as ruining the gene pool so quickly? Why not take the healthiest fish from the spawn and add them to your breeding group, sell the rest to hobbyists or breeders, then buy more fish from a reputable source(changing sources to maximize genetic diversity that enters your gene pool, because any breeder is in charge of managing their gene pool because they host the population)? It seems so much more effective at boosting gene pool while maintaining good breeding ethics.
It may take longer to populate the hobby, but if done correctly people can establish a strong founding population that can supply the hobby for many years.
