Rachel the planted tank with the wild Betta's and the Chilli Rasboras was really lovely. I have never seen anything with ground cover that had long fur over everything it looked fantastic Also the way you filmed the shy fish looking so comfortable shows dedication to you hiding in subdued lighting. 👍
I’ve always done nano fish so far but I decided to go wicked small recently. I got some kubotai rasbora and gelius barbs. Unfortunately they didn’t do well at all during acclimation and now I have two rasbora and one barb.... I went back to my lfs and they said it will probably be quite some time before they’re available again to order. It’s really frustrating! Great point... designing the aquarium to make the fish comfortable!💕 Seems we, especially new fishkeepers, think a clean, clear tank is best. So not true much of the time. Great information. Thank you!
I would LOVE to see you get into brackish! I'm just working on a brackish setup for some caridinia gracilirostris to see if they might breed for me, it would be really fun to see you try it. Good video and beautiful fish as always
I love small fish because they can be kept in bigger groups without having a huge aquarium. Seeing a video on breeding the wild bettas would be wonderful.
Agree Rachel, 100% worth the effort with the smaller species. My dream tank is taking shape and I've just added 24 five banded barb (I brought the whole shop stock) and the behaviour and way they act in a large group in a large tank is just awesome. I've added my measly group of chill and dwarf rasbora so its off to the shop today to buy 20+ more chilli's :)
It's funny watching those bettas in the algae tank. There's this entire pile of food right in front of them, yet they are so selective about which piece to go after. Really awesome tank, by the way. I can see why it's one of your favorites.

Great video. If this is your new style/goal, it's awesome. Lots of info on your personal plans and experiences with tank styles and species really is a great focus.
(With the understanding that the plural of anecdote is not data...) I managed to pretty much fill a 20L with betta imbellis by getting a *lot* of thin manzanita branches and tangling them together, covering the sides with java fern and anubias, draping the top with anarchis elodea and duckweed, and putting on a tight-fitting lid. I also added some pleco caves to the bottom, which seem to be used exclusively by the males. Despite the amount of "stuff" in there, they are always out and about, and very visible - they will even race to the top of the tank for feeding time much like a splendens. It may be that the amount of "open water" at the top of your tank is making them feel insecure, even with the dither fish?
This was a super-fantastic educational video! I could watch your tanks all day... one of my favorites is the green algae tank. I'm sending a link to this wonderful video out to my aquarium loving friends!
My male wild beta was in a heavily planted aquarium and he rarely came out. The female in another tank would hang out at the front watching everything I did. Night and day in personality.
My betta imbellis is the least shy thing in my fish room, not only is he ultra aggressive to anything that moves but he'll always come to the glass to be nosey. Densely planted 15g tank on his own where i grow out my anubias and buce's he's happy as Larry until you cross him

Lovely bettas. Thanks so much for this footage. I was wondering about keeping a wild-type betta singly. Are their needs significantly different from the more common fancy bettas? I was thinking of a 5 gallon planted tank.

Hi Rachel, can you please help me out with some advice regarding a swim bladder disorder affecting my Celestial Pearl Danio. I have tried to catch her numerous times in my thickly planted tank but have been unable to. I intended to give her a Epsom salt bath. She is swimming head up with curvature in the spine in circles mostly on but still evades the net. Am watching from Australia and love your channel. Many thanks Lyn.
👀 The wild bettas are just stunning! Would LOVE to see more videos on them♡ (And of course mystery snails hehe ) (Also, maybe you remember, the clutch I asked you about a few weeks ago, was indeed, infertile. But, I have 3 more incubating at the moment, hopefully I have success this time. thanks again for all your input, truly appreciated.)
Gotta say - I have mahachaiensis bettas and I bred them. I have about 35 or so babies and - maybe it’s because I’m there staring at them every day for a while because they’re so stinking cute, but as they grew they started being more outgoing and less shy. The parents were PAINFULLY shy. The babies? Not so. Now they’re just starting to get color and show some pair preference, which means I’ll have to start moving some pairs to local shops. Anyway - I highly recommend breeding them. Very cool fish, very sweet. And they tend to do dance battles rather than actually fight. :)
So well done, as usual. Thanks for everything about this video. I have a heavily planted 5g tank with 5 ember tetras and an untold number of cherry shrimp. Sadly, I never see the embers. I have driftwood as well as several almond leaves to help with a black water effect but it hasn’t helped. Any advice?
they are garbage disposals, not at all picky. If you want them to spawn, mixing up a fair amount of live or frozen will help get them in the mood, otherwise, they are not picky for maintenance purposes.
I like the chillies with the algea tank. They look really good together. Would like you to breed wild bettas. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 The south American tank is still my favorite.
I enjoy all of your aquariums. I have a 75 gallon that I want to redo into a 75 gallon nano. It currently houses my goldfish and they are outgrowing it. I try to get shy fish in large groups so they feel more comfortable and a lot of my tanks are jungles. I have fallen in love with wild bettas. I hope you try to breed yours. I would love to see your process.
I had about 10 CPDs by them selves and they were super shy and liked to hide. The minute I put 5 neon tetras in the tank. The CPDs came out and are no where near as shy
Rachael what dither fisb would you recomnend for Geophagus Tapajos aquarium with Brochis splendens, I woukd like to fill the upper part of the aquarium?
Hi Rachel. I'm in Alabama.and we have very hard water.I'm wondering what to do about it. I've lost a couple of fish in the last month, which I don't take lightly.I keep a check on my water and that's been the only problem to detect. What can I do,short of going brackish on it?The fish store says add more prime, which I do but it doesn't seem to resolve my problem.I'm new to this round of fish keeping, closing in on a year back in it.Everything has been going great,up until this overall.Thank you and yours my no.1 teacher so big THANK YOU!
I think they are telling you to add prime, because as water gets harder, the ammonia toxicity gets exponentially more dangerous. Because of this, you need to stock way slower, and do more water changes when adding new fish (Or utilize a filter media like polyfilter, which adsorbs and absorbs so it can act as a first line of defense for you- it turns yellow to indicate ammonia before its even detectable in yoru aquarium). I would encourage you to try using that media, adding just a postage stamp sized piece, floating in teh aquarium, and use that to help you stay ahead of your aquarium
Edit: Hello again Rachel! I think slow sinking pellets could be an option. Mine usually comes to feed at the surface instead of in the middle column. The floating pellets might have triggered their predatory behavior. Another thing is that they *only* come out in swarms if they are hungry. After feeding them bbs and filling up their bellies, they don’t show up at all and the tank looks empty. It’s not until the next day that they come out again begging for food (at the surface column). Once they get used to people around, they come out much more often and stare at me for minutes (might be their infrared organs doing their job). I bought my recent batch two months ago, and since I only have one tank, I spend at least one hour near my tank every day. They eventually got used to me being around, after around a week. Some individuals are more shy than others and don’t show up as often though. Double ninja edit: I know I’m crazy for this fish... I used to keep purple pencils, but they keep dying out. Same for the tucano. So now I only keep black darters. My experience with them isn’t long at all, just a year, and the last batch is completely wiped out by NTD. But these fish definitely aren’t *that* shy. It’s understandable that yours don’t come out that often, as you have many, many tanks to take care of, while I only have one, and this (average time devoted to one tank) makes a huge difference. (It’s winter vacation, and I sit by my tank all day. Not joking haha!) I’m amazed by how you can keep up with all these tanks and fish and still make them feel super comfortable. I can imagine the amount of work you have to do. It’s really, really impressive! (Sorry for the huge clump of words)
I love small shy fish.. sitting quietly watching the tanks and getting to see them come out. I have Cory fish nobody sees but me and the cat. They come in the room and move around fast. So they never get that reward.
I'm quite surprised about how skittish your bettas are. I have a mahachai betta that was always a bit skittish (which i thought was strange) but he would still gladly come out for food. I guess i'm just lucky lol! or maybe its because he's tank raised
I love wild bettas. Would love to see how they can live in community but also want to see a breeding pair. I hope you will continue with this species because I am very interested in their natural habitat and it’s hard to find information on this topic. Any information you can provide would be helpful.
The only really shy species I keep are my Ancistrus, which are ironically also the dominant species in most if not all of my tanks (only my Giant Danios give them any competition).
The Thai breeders are keeping Betta mahachaiensis in the same (soft) water conditions as imbellis and splendens. Hard brackish water is not required and might not be appropriate especially if they are captive bred.
Your tank scapes are absolutely beautiful. I personally love nano fish in a large aquarium. What is the vertical twisted wood on the right side of your 75g nano? As for the bettas in brackish, If you are going to sell their offspring, most people wouldn't have a brackish setup so I would keep them freshwater. If you are just keeping them for yourself, then I would experiment with both brackish & freshwater.
I don't think shy fish would be good for my nerves saying as I start my day with a head-count of my rasbora and freak out if I can't find one! It's always the same male I've named Rip Van Winkle cos he's the last to wriggle out of his hornwort duvet and the first back in there at dusk. 🤣
We love to have Rachel O'Leary come to our Fish Club on February 1, 2020. Follow us on Instagram and RUclips for more details GOLD COAST AQUARIUM SOCIETY . We are in South Florida. Rachel will be speaking their...
"I'll be in Florida..." didn't anyone tell you Florida is a mad house in winter? We've got scads of northerners, Canadians and Europeans blocking up all of the roads this time of year. Off season I can get to Lowe's in 10 minutes, now it is 20 if I am lucky. On brackish tanks, there are some really awesome fish (there are some amazeball gobies but my love are the pipefish). But, IME, brackish is hell to maintain, worse than marine. Most of the species benefit from a salinity swing, which means dropping the salinity when you do a water change and bringing it back up over a couple of days. (I'm not saying don't do it, just know it is more work, you have to buy new kit [a hydrometer, marine salt, etc], have to pre-mix water to add to the tanks so you'll be lifting buckets of water)
I’d love to see you breed a wild betta with a domestic. As someone who got into betta breeding because of you and Dexter’s World (Hes An AWESOME breeder in the Philippines).
Today we take a look at some of my favorite shy fish around the fishroom, and why I think they are totally worth it. We also discuss a few strategies for making fish less shy.

It’s gonna be a 10 gallon with 1 male betta and probably a few Corys
Rachel sorry if you answered this.im new.do you have co2 on all your planted tanks?
I don't use any co2 or ferts
Rachel O'Leary Thank you. LOVE your channel.
Awesome looking tank & what's the breed of the bettas looks like a mouth brooder betta
They are both bubble nesters. First are mahachaiensis, second are imbellis
I'm quite surprised about how skittish your bettas are. I have a mahachai betta that was always a bit skittish (which i thought was strange) but he would still gladly come out for food. I guess i'm just lucky lol! or maybe its because he's tank raised
Beautiful bettas, what kind of species is it exactly?
Betta mahachaiensis are the first ones, the second group is imbellis
Any advice for keeping white cheek gobies?
i apologize, my common name game is about as weak as it comes. Do you know their latin name?
I love wild bettas. Would love to see how they can live in community but also want to see a breeding pair. I hope you will continue with this species because I am very interested in their natural habitat and it’s hard to find information on this topic. Any information you can provide would be helpful.
The only really shy species I keep are my Ancistrus, which are ironically also the dominant species in most if not all of my tanks (only my Giant Danios give them any competition).
Do you dose Rooibos Tea in your B. Mahachai tank?
No, but I could.its currently dingy enough on it's own (I crack me up)
Hi Rachel, whatever happened to your red breast acara? They were such a cool fish! I'm surprised we don't see them much in the hobby.
Still have two, sold most to a gentleman who was super interested in doing a dedicated breeding project
I'm trying to breed paradise fish .So eney breeding videos Will be great. 👍
The Thai breeders are keeping Betta mahachaiensis in the same (soft) water conditions as imbellis and splendens. Hard brackish water is not required and might not be appropriate especially if they are captive bred.
These are f1. They seem to be largely imparticular, but I think the fact that hatch rate could and likely would be good for harder water is exciting
@@RachelOLeary That would be an interesting comparison.
Its manzanita driftwood
I don't think shy fish would be good for my nerves saying as I start my day with a head-count of my rasbora and freak out if I can't find one! It's always the same male I've named Rip Van Winkle cos he's the last to wriggle out of his hornwort duvet and the first back in there at dusk. 🤣
that is one of the reasons I like feeding onip a few times a week, it makes it easy to get a head count.
would love to see a breeding setup

"I'll be in Florida..."
didn't anyone tell you Florida is a mad house in winter?
Wtf. I was like... i aint heard from rachel in a while... * goes to page and notifications are off * wtf RUclips!
Welcome back then! RUclips does that to me all the time too. Its frustrating
I’d love to see you breed a wild betta with a domestic. As someone who got into betta breeding because of you and Dexter’s World (Hes An AWESOME breeder in the Philippines).
I am honestly not a fan of hybridization in general, so probably not the project for me.
