"you don't have to follow the rules to be successful" ain't that the truth. My most successful saltwater tank was a 20 gallon reef that rarely saw water changes.
I love how chill you are about some stuff, not fussing and forcing things to be "perfect." Makes for a much more organic and enjoyable tank. I think if the fish are happy and healthy, and the tank is stable and doesn't require constant tweaking to keep it in balance, that's a success.
Yay, algaescape ftw! You can tell its a successful tank by the color of those chili rasboras. You can tell they love it with how colorful they are. Some of my favorite tanks are algaescapes.
Beautiful tank! I think apart from its uniqueness, it gives off a very natural feel that's why people are gravitated to it. Happy healthy plants can fend off algae naturally. I heard that from someone.
With animal husbandry, I've found that "rules" are more like "loose guides". Especially when I engaged more with Permaculture, I've learned that nature can adapt in ways that are unexpected. Sometimes good, sometimes to our detriment. Success is subjective, imo, it depends on what your goals are as a hobbyist~ As a breeder, I personally like to create planted scapes that emulate natural environments for specific species, to encourage natural breeding and social behaviors. To me, if I can achieve a natural and aesthetically pleasing breeding tanks, I'm happy. :) nothing against breeders that do bare tanks! I love the Algae scape, it looks like a flooded field. :)
Love the wild bettas and the leopard danios~~~ What makes an aquarium successful is having goals for the tank, and achieving those goals. If it turned out how you wanted it, it's successful~~
I actually find that algae sublimely beautiful. The contrast of colors with the scape and the inhabitants as well as the subtle lines and geometries are breathtaking.
Wow! What a beautiful tank!!! I think it's amazing and it is a very successful tank full of life. Everything is working together for the benefit of each other! Awesome!
While growing up in the sticks of Indiana and visiting my relatives farms in Pennsylvania the outdoors is what I love. Your natural looking tanks are just so wonderful to look at. Just about every natural tank you have reminds me of some section of pond, river or lake that I have seen. That to me is what makes a successful tank. On another note when I set up a tank and tell my children where I think every fish will hang out and I am correct- that also makes a successful tank. My boys wonder how I know and I just tell them I pay attention to nature.
Definitely beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder..... the tank is awesome.. as long as the fish are happy.. and the tank looks different the hobby gets more successful..
That Algae growth is Beautiful! What makes an Aquarium successful is it’s beneficial for the fish 1st and aesthetically pleasing 2nd. But I agree thats its in the eye of the beholder.
This is an incredible tank, it’s natural response in covering the hardscape with hair algae yet keeping off the plants is a true wonder. I love when you have videos that just feature a single tank because there’s so much to observe.
I agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A successful tank, in my opinion, is one that you want to keep coming back to just to look at it over and over, one that you want to spend time relaxing in front of and watching. For some that's lots of scaping. For others it's a sparkling clean bare tank with lots of new fry. I really resonate with doing what you like, what's enjoyable to you. There's so many different ways to do things in this hobby. I also think it's important to respect those who do things differently from you, as long as the fish are healthy and well cared for. There's no one right way to do things. Rigidity and exclusion will kill the hobby. Not anything you've done, but what I've seen from some others.
I think it’s beautiful. It looks so natural. Does the algae just not grow on the plants ? If not, THAT is super cool. I like the contrast of the soft algae against the plants.
The imbellis are just super awesome. I'm just amazed at the fact that the algae, green velvet moss if you want to make it sound cool, that only grows on the hardscape.
I really love this aquarium Rachel. I love your aquariums because you set them up for your fish, and for them to live and flourish in their own habitat. Those Bettas are beauties. ❤
My most successful tank is my experiment tank-- no heater, no ferts, water changes only when I accidentally overfeed-- and it's full of happy, fertile guppies and happy, fertile snails and happy, fertile java fern. I also love using algae is an aquascaping plant, trimming and cleaning it as it grows to keep the look I want, because I want my tanks to be beautiful boxes of nature!
I love that tank I love how it looks and that the fish look happy. To me it’s beautiful. I don’t know anything about aquariums except the stuff I’ve learned from you and some stuff from the King of DIY though I enjoy your approach to your aquariums and your fish a bit more.
Very nice tank! I’m in the process of setting up a 15g column. I’m not even sure which of my fish I’ll move in there but I’m really excited for the scape. My vision is a little slice of North American shallow riverbed. I hoped it comes out well!
It’s beautiful, Rachel! That’s a nice looking type of algae, IMHO. “What makes a tank successful?” For starters - when you have healthy fish and you find joy and peace just staring at it... that’s all that really matters. 😉 The knowledge and enrichment we gain from research/experience, the friends we gain in the community, preserving endangered species when we can... all major perks.
I have always loved this tank for the simple reason that it highlights Chili Rasboras against the green of the algae! Although I liked it even before the algae showed up. And the fact that it was a 20 long I could more closely relate to. I agree though, it's whatever you like that makes it "successful in appearance." But, for me, I like tanks to have live plants, and lots of botanicals. I almost wish some of my pods would grow algae like that! And I like this tank to watch for the cameo appearances of the embelis...(not sure of the plural embeli?)
Thank you so much for sharing. I love the natural look and I am ok with not having crisp clear water. I want my fish happy and if that means some hair algae and and natural space then so be it.
I got a 10 gallon tank with 10 ember tetras, planning on adding a wild betta as a center piece. My 3 options are betta imbellis, alien, or smaragdina. I’ll take my time choosing as I need my 10 gallon and my ember tetras to reach an equilibrium first before adding my final fish.
😍 maaaaan I Wish i had a green fussy landscape like that.. but algae, mosses and anubia's I just can't get to grow, they just die. Anything else grow like bunkers in my tanks. To me a successful tank is a tank where everything thrives, plants, fish, shrimps etc..
What makes a successful tank for me is a good hardscape, thriving plants, botanicals, happy and healthy fish/shrimps/snails/fresh water clams or mussels, live foods living in the tank like daphnia and cyclops. Stable water conditions in the correct parameters for your tank's inhabitants.
I really love the look of carpeting algae. It looks really nice without being too crazy. I haven't been able to get this result so I love seeing it in others tanks.
Algae is best and cheapest of aquarium plants!!! I personally try to grow bright green if not hair algae on all my goldfish tank bottoms since I keep them bare bottom for cleaning reasons.
I think it looks stunning. I have a 65g that, according to the internet stocking adviser, is 199% overstocked! When you look at my tank it looks empty, as all my fish are quite small. I have 10 black skirt tetras, 12 cherry barbs, 8 betta smaragdina and 18 juvenile (1.5”) bristlenose plecos. It’s heavily planted with anubias, has trees made from spider wood and several caves. My parameters are always good and I do a 20% water change every day, removing uneaten food at the same time. I feel my tank is successful but I know that once my bristlenose reach full size I will have to put some of them in a tank of their own.
The bettas are amazing. The danios and rasboras are so active and healthy. I love your fishroom because you don't try to force uniformity on each and every tank. You let them evolve and be what they are going to be. It's fascinating to see different tanks with the same water and temps grow wildly different. This tank is a perfect example of that. The fish, plants and algae are all thriving, and it looks crazy good. 👍💕👍
I think I saw all six of them. Two were peeking there noses out will the other four were all the way out. So Neet. Looks like they live inside of those nuts. Those chillies are super red! So cool.
I think that's one of my favourite tanks of yours. 😊 I was just about to say I was fascinated that the hair algae seem to be sticking to the seed pods, when you mentioned it! 😁 When I was a newbie I used to get stressed out at the first sign of algae and assumed I was doing something terribly wrong. Now I am happy for my tank to look natural, including a bit of algea, as long as my fish are active and colourful and my parameters are good. 😊
The hair algae does grow on you if it looks like it is there intentionally. I have a bunch of red hair algae on the rock that tops the cave in the dovii tank. Once it covered the whole rock it became really bright in color and moves with the current. I actually really like it now.
The hair algae looks great. Lots of healthy fish, so definitely a successful aquarium. I like things to look natural, but if someone wants a castle, skull, or "no fishing" sign in their tank, so be it. I am quite certain that the fish don't care as long was the water is clean and they are getting fed well. The health of the fish needs to be the primary concern, IMO, and healthy fish=successful aquarium IMO.
It's funny you bring this up some of the most successful breeders I've known have what most would consider "disgusting" which I believe proves your point
absolutely in love with that algae scape, have seen a similar set up with black beard algae on wood and the way it moves with the flow is amazing. I wanna know how to get this much algae going actually
That must be a really unique variety of algae, I cant believe it doesn't grow on those slow plants. It does look cool in that tank, it works so go with it lol

Omg!! So gorgeous 😍
The algae looks amazing!!! How are you keeps it off the plants ?
Can we get a fishroom tour ?
How do you grow green algae like that on purpose? I would like to do that so my fancy goldfish can graze on it
A successful tank is when the fish thrive, and are healthy. Other than that everything else is a bonus.
I like the algae. I like the wild tanks more than the totally sculpted tanks.
"you don't have to follow the rules to be successful"
ain't that the truth. My most successful saltwater tank was a 20 gallon reef that rarely saw water changes.
I MHO, a successful aquarium is one that supports life.
If you don't have that nothing else matters.
I enjoy the softness of the scape. I am so glad to see rounded shapes. I find it visually soothing.
I think that when the inhabitants of the tank are happy and healrhy... it's successful! Thanks Rachel, I have learned so much from you!
I love how chill you are about some stuff, not fussing and forcing things to be "perfect." Makes for a much more organic and enjoyable tank. I think if the fish are happy and healthy, and the tank is stable and doesn't require constant tweaking to keep it in balance, that's a success.
Wow! Great tank! It looks like a mossy walk in the woods. I love the fish too. They really compliment each other.
Yay, algaescape ftw! You can tell its a successful tank by the color of those chili rasboras. You can tell they love it with how colorful they are. Some of my favorite tanks are algaescapes.

Nice Footage!! A successful tank is what you put into it, and is working for you....
Thanks Rachel...
Wow! What a beautiful tank!!! I think it's amazing and it is a very successful tank full of life. Everything is working together for the benefit of each other! Awesome!
I love watching your videos , and love the naturalistic way you set your scapes 🥰
While growing up in the sticks of Indiana and visiting my relatives farms in Pennsylvania the outdoors is what I love. Your natural looking tanks are just so wonderful to look at. Same for me, and what you see in my tanks is what I strive for- so thank you!
🌵So glad to see you still have this tank going! What polite algae and sexy fish you have. It seems like a magical gift.🌵
An 'algae scape'?! Even though I'm a fan of more vertical elements, that is a sweet tank
Definitely beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder..... the tank is awesome.. as long as the fish are happy.. and the tank looks different the hobby gets more successful..
I've never seen an aquarium with algeagrowth this beautiful :D So I gave a thumbs up!
That Algae growth is Beautiful! What makes an Aquarium successful is it’s beneficial for the fish 1st and aesthetically pleasing 2nd. But I agree thats its in the eye of the beholder.
I think the tank looks really cool. It's got a very otherworldly look to it that compliments the fish perfectly.
Your next t-shirt: A pic of the male Betta with 'sexy piece of fish' written on it LOL
I agree! lol
I LOST IT AT "THAT'S A SEXY PIECE OF FISH" 🤣
It's TRUE though
@@RachelOLeary FOR SURE 👍💪

That algeae is probably the most effective filter you can have.
It looks so cool! I love all the fish in this tank.
Check in each week... are you kidding! I check in each day, love to watch and learn. Thanks!
As long as there is a balance between plants and the fish the looks really don't matter. That is an amazing looking tank!!
Thank you for the video and for the beautiful aquarium.
They take a lot of time and care to grow nice again. 🧓🏻👍
I think it’s beautiful. It looks so natural.
Does the algae just not grow on the plants ? If not, THAT is super cool. I like the contrast of the soft algae against the plants.
Yea it just doesn't, so neat!
The imbellis are just super awesome. I'm just amazed at the fact that the algae, green velvet moss if you want to make it sound cool, that only grows on the hardscape.
i love the algae scape tank ! for the first 10 years in the hobby algae was the plant i grew....................
Thanks for the great content Rachel. I look up to you so much. Keep killin it!
thanks Meghan!
I really love this aquarium Rachel. I love your aquariums because you set them up for your fish, and for them to live and flourish in their own habitat. Those Bettas are beauties. ❤

Success = healthy, happy fish! This tank is just beautiful! My favorite of all of your tanks. Is that silly of me?
That is the most natural tank I have ever seen. Interesting concept
Thanks. I am oddly infatuated with it
I absolutely love your fish room and all of your Aquariums!!! I absolutely love the look of this aquarium!!!!
This is the most beautiful algaescape I've ever seen.
I love love love the algae tank!! It’s doing great!!!
i think the way the algae grew is awesome
I love the chilli Rasboras! Look really good against the algea. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
I love that tank. I think it is stunning. It looks like smooth green velvet.
I want chili rasbora! And some of your rice fish.... and otos......
And that algae is so cool and different.
Easily my favorite of your more recent builds honestly! Also AH ALL 6 OF THEM WERE OUT!! How exciting 😍
I love that tank I love how it looks and that the fish look happy. To me it’s beautiful. I don’t know anything about aquariums except the stuff I’ve learned from you and some stuff from the King of DIY though I enjoy your approach to your aquariums and your fish a bit more.

Oh dear.... that's beautiful algae you have there... so fluffy, dense and bright. I want to run my finger through those fluffy algae.
It’s beautiful, Rachel! That’s a nice looking type of algae, IMHO.

The Chili-Rasboras and Leopard Danios look so good. It shows how healthy the Aquarium's water quality is. Thanks for sharing.

This was so healing thank you
The six bettas can be seen at 7:20!
I think I saw all six of them. Two were peeking there noses out will the other four were all the way out. So Neet. Looks like they live inside of those nuts. Those chillies are super red! So cool.
I agree, I think its beautiful!
I live the bushy growth. Missed ya at the Aquatic Experience
As always great video! Keep them coming
This is it. True beauty.
My feelings are aquariums are ever changing. Keeping healthy fish and plants make the successful aquarium.
I think that's one of my favourite tanks of yours. 😊 I was just about to say I was fascinated that the hair algae seem to be sticking to the seed pods, when you mentioned it! 😁
When I was a newbie I used to get stressed out at the first sign of algae and assumed I was doing something terribly wrong. Now I am happy for my tank to look natural, including a bit of algea, as long as my fish are active and colourful and my parameters are good. 😊
The work and love you put into it 💗💗💗
absolutely!
Active fish that grow to their fullest potential along with plants that flourish are what I consider characteristics of a successful aquarium. :)
That algae 😍, it's fantastic.
I always look forward to your video's
thank you!
The hair algae does grow on you if it looks like it is there intentionally. I have a bunch of red hair algae on the rock that tops the cave in the dovii tank. Once it covered the whole rock it became really bright in color and moves with the current. I actually really like it now.
The bettas are so cute hiding under the seed pods🥰
As long as the fish live well , it's the most important to me. A tank is a whole thing , like a little univers.
Could you do a video about scraping with algae? I absolutely LOVE the way your tank looks.
Such a beautiful tank
I think the hair algae is really neat. I can appreciate the beauty in it, even if it's usually considered an eyesore in a tank.
ALL YOUR TANKS ALWAYS TURN OUT TO BE SUCCESSFUL🤔
That algae scape though still amazes me how all the algae gets concentrated on the hardscape only🌲
The hair algae looks great.
Seriously love this idea! I think sometimes we can micro manage our tanks too much, I love to see what nature does by herself.
I really enjoy that algae. I once had a tank with very similar if not the same algae and could never get it back after I loss it.
Algea like that is amazing, it looks like soft luch grass.
What kind of Crypts is this on the left of the tank? Albida Brown? Really love this aquatic scape! Best regards from France ;)
your tank that 1. Looks proper .top notch with Algy .Best way
I love this tank! It's quite lovely.I agree that we don't have to follow the rules. Grrrls rock!
I love watching you video they Inspired me to do mine own thanks
I love that aquarium, one of my favourites as well!
That's amazing I've never seen anything like that. All that algae will improve the water quality...
That must be a really unique variety of algae, I cant believe it doesn't grow on those slow plants. It does look cool in that tank, it works so go with it lol
