Here’s How Powerful The iOS App Store Really Is

- I think you’ve heard from the media that the Apple App Store generates a lot of money but do you know just how much that is? Well, it turns out that the Apple App Store pulls in $85 billion worth of revenue every single year out of which Apple gets $20 to $25 billion. Historically, Apple has boasted App Store margins of up to 78% meaning that Apple profits nearly $20 billion from the App Store every single year. If the App Store was a standalone business, it would be worth $460 billion on its own which would make it the world’s 15th largest company. And that’s not too surprising when you consider that $85 billion is just the amount that gets processed by Apple. When we look at the total of transactions enabled by the App Store, we’ll get a much larger of $1.1 trillion. For perspective, that would make the Apple App Store the 17th largest country in the world by GDP. This video explains the intricacies of App Store monetization and how powerful the Apple App Store really is.

Nintendo and Microsoft fighting the Apple tax while charging the same 30% on their own app/game stores is hilarious
Hahaha for real
Main reason none of them really want to commit to going toe to toe with Apple
@@furn2313 yup, they just making noise and getting headlines written. If the regulatory bodies really brought the hammer down on Apple theyd all be screwred

Hey, usually love your videos but a couple of issues in this one.
Amazon don’t have to use the App Store payment methods as the content isn’t being consumed in the app, rather with Amazon you’re buying external goods to be consumed off device.
Apple only enforce using IAP when the content is being used on device such as with streaming services and games.
Also Apple don’t manually review all code, a compiled binary is sent to them. Some heuristics are used etc but they cannot see the original code.
Ah, thanks for the corrections adoug
Yes came here to say this - huge difference
So people dont actually mind xcode. You dont actually need it to write code. The problem is that the build tools are only available on a MAC. That means that even though I can write my code anywhere, i MUST use my mac to compile it. This is the issue.
Ah, another instance of Apple forcing their tools haha :)
Bootcamp- oh wait
Yep, I wanted to cross compile my rust project but the rust devs said screw it, they actively make it harder so its a no go.
Opencore running under KVM on Linux is the way to go

You also forgot to state one thing. Apps that sell physical goods or are making money from ads don't pay Apple and Google any cuts. It is only the apps that sell digital goods such as in-game items, digital subscriptions for digital content, boosts, etc. That is why Meta and even companies like Uber, Doordash, and Robinhood don't pay any cuts to the app stores of either Apple or Google.
This just drives more developers to focus on non-digital apps or to use ads to generate revenue instead because they don't have to give up a huge percentage of their revenue to both Apple and Google and deal with the hassle of implementing subscriptions.
@jazilzaim You are half right...
Merchant --> iOS App --> Sales via iOS App --> Customer Checkout --> Apple Pay --> Merchant Fees --> Apple Revenue
@@backupdancer3720 not really. I have a shopping app on the app store currently and we have only paid the $100 yearly Apple developer license. We haven't paid any cuts to Apple and we don't use Apple Pay in our app either
Developing for iOS is a dream compared to android. Also React Native is pretty dominant for a long time now for cross platform development with JavaScript, though flutter definitely making room !
React is dead, and thinking iOS is a dream is just a skill issue
IOS is garbage platform. Restricted and limited
well, it is what it is, but as a long term open source guy, i don't like the closed ecosystem at all@@estiennetaylor1260
Well every developer at my agency prefers it 10x over writing either native so, agree to disagree. Also good luck staying in business long if you are not using at least flutter then
Also if you think android studio or needing to squash fucked up bugs on 100 popular android devices is fun, you a masochist

30% is the standard. People just dont like the App Store because of how successful it is
On android and windows you aren’t forced to use their stores, at least not yet, but on iPhone you are completely locked in, unless you install temporary developer apps, which need to be refreshed every 7 days.
Of course with consoles it a different story. The consoles are sold at a loss so the manufacturers can make their money back by selling games and subscriptions.
Also, google and m$ are guilty of monopolistic practices. Google does not allow manufacturers that sell Google android phones to sell Degoogled android phones. Microsoft tries to force bing, bing chat, and MS edge on windows users even if you change default browsers and search engines.
30% is crazy and the app is a mess, stop driding, apple doesnt care about you not in a individual level or as a whole
It's their ecosystem that created problems

Won’t the EU demand that third party developers can create app stores?
Who knows haha, maybe

How does play store compare?
I have 2 apps on the App Store and can confidently say the Apple review team doesn’t play game lol. However in a way it does (for myself at least) feel as though their strict guidelines and review processes forces you to be better.
From just an Application user in the Apple ecosystem-- would like to know from a developer Standpoint... If we the Consumers of the Apps you guys put out on the App Store-- the "free ones"... do, anything count for you guys when users download them and write reviews on them? Since we didn't pay to use it.
@@lawrenceatkinson No, we can only make money, when you guys watch ADS OR Buy in-app Purchase.
Note there are other ways to monetize an app but those two are the most common and straightforward.
@@lawrenceatkinsonwe only get money through in app purchases or if the app itself is paid.
Of course we see stats like how many installs, uninstalls and some other stuff like operating system version distribution, but those dont translate to money. Ofc we get notified if someond reviews our app. On ios I dont think we can answer, but on Google Play we as devs can respond to criticism or suggest workarounds for functionality not currently available
Another reason the App Store is so powerful is because it is the only store to download apps on iPhone
What about the PlayStation Store, Nintendo Store, and Xbox Store? Lol 😆
30% is average for most game stores so I am kinda confused on why people would get mad about it
I guess it’s just the insane scale of Apple
@@HyperionGDOf course they don’t know that everyone does it. Apple lives rent-free in every haters’ heads. I’m not gonna pretend like they’re a remotely good or moral company, but some people’s blind hatred of everything Apple does is pretty hilarious.
@@HyperionGD 30% only makes sense for consoles and that for digital sales
If you were a dev wouldn't you also prefer 100% of your revenue vs 70%? Yes its the standard, and yes people absolutely know it is, but if they see an opportunity they're going to take it. Simple
@@kingdeedee Regardless of what your stance on what the revenue cut _should_ be is, companies are well within their right to yoink some of the dev’s profits if the dev is using their platform and infrastructure to sell a product.

Would love to hear your take on the Google Play vs. Epic trial and the Apple Appstore vs. Epic trial. Most notably their different outcomes
Idk if he really does opinionated videos like that though
Google lost the battle now because of the profit margin but instead because google was paying certain developer to stay in the play store, which is a monopolistic practice.

Baby face Hari! Looking clean
But doesn't Apple then turn around and put most of that profit back into upgrading there services & keeping it all running smoothly for a completely closed off system.
Do you know what Cydia is?
Nice haircut!
it truly is big
The problem is not that apple is charging a 30% tax, it's that the companies now feel a right to pass on their every expense directly to the customer. Ever heard of a cost of doing business, you greedy corporations?
Shame on a company for trying to make a profit. Hopefully one day you will risk everything in your life to start a company, then after years of blood, sweat and tears some 19yr old zit infested kid will post online how your a shitty person for trying to make a profit and you should only be allowed to earn what they deem acceptable.
You decided to buy an iphone. If stuff ends up costing 30% more for you thats on you. You chose the walled garden and you better be happy with it or hope the eu regulates the shit out of apple.
@@ciriousjoker Did you even watch the videos? Google does the same thing, and this fee only applies to transactions funneled through the app store. As explained in the video, the massive benefit of this is the greatly decreased friction to making the purchase, encouraging more people to give money to that company. It makes sense that that would come with a fee to the company, but if the company just passes that right on to the customer, it defeats the whole point of that benefit, because they put the friction right back into it with a higher monthly price.
If you started a business today and you were offered backing by a trillion dollar company for 30% of all future profits and in return you were given access to over a billion potential customers, you’d sign that contract faster than you could blink. And it’s only 15% up to $1m. Apple is not ripping off developers at all. They are providing a business opportunity for tens of millions of people.
You use another Dev RUclipsr's (Joma) videos here? Just curious do you have his permission?

I don't even know if you noticed that i have been posting similar comments for quite some time but it doesn't matter. you are very good at what you do
Okay, what Apple does by reviewing software, isnt unique to them. The Google Play store does the same thing. They have a review process where someone check certain guide lines that you meet, and if you arent up to par, they deny your submission. Google in some cases is even more picky than Apple. Yes you can install apps in other ways on Android, but most people dont. They go through the play store where everything you have mentioned in this video, goes on there too.
Your numbers aren't correct. In the documents you presented in your own video, 142.6 billion apps and games were downloaded in 2022, but 110.1 billion of those downloads were Google play, not Apple. Your document states that iOS only accounted for 32.6 billion of those downloads. Still a lot, but not nearly as inflated as you presented. Did you not read your own documents?
That's only 1.12 exabytes of data per year, not 4.8. (Still a lot, I know. But it's rather odd you didn't check your own numbers before releasing the video).

Apple forces certain purchases to go through the app store
*practically all except physical goods & streaming services & [insert big corporation here because those apparently have their own set of rules]
Details on the Apple Tax are flat wrong.
There are really TWO fees. One at the purchase of an app and one for in-app purchases.
In-app purchases are EXCLUDED for physical goods which is the real reason Amazon doesn’t pay an Apple tax.
In-app purchases APPLY to digital goods. The video is right in that companies like Epic do NOT need Apples infrastructure for payments. But App Store rules FORCE them to use their infrastructure anyway for digital goods and be subject to the Apple tax instead of the 3% or so they would pay through say Square.
This is why Epic raised a stink.

The fact they are richeat tech company in the world, they know they dont have to do something like consoles manufacturers do, sells consoles at a loss and earn money from its subscription services and games on their platform.
Facts, they have much more pricing power
Once you use an android, you will appreciate the quality of the apps on Apple Devices. The difference is quite disgusting. Apparently, only "cheap lazy" developers complain about the apple review process, since they make sh*t apps. Android not having this "keyboard is covering text field" review is the reason instagram, snapchat, messenger, and others will always suck on android.
