The term is used figuratively in both languages, but in this case it's literal: he wants to stow his clothes away in some deep corner of his closet and go shopping naked. Ergo, he wants to "mothball" them.

You should hear some more of Peter Fox the Album Stadtaffe (Luke translated it wrong here it means City Ape) it was really fantastic. But you should read while hearing it the translated lyrics cause they are pretty awesome so not just the lyrics itself but what is meant and what the story has to tell. Beside it its really fun to hear it anyway.

More specifically Berlin. Also Affe could mean both ape or monkey. So city monkey would even would be a pun on the other Seeed song Music Monks (where they sing about "city monks" / Stadt Mönche)
