12:06 It took me almost 20 years to figure out what the song actually is about. As a child, I did not really get it. Later and when I learned that his wife died, and after having some negative phases in my own life, I started to understand. The song seemingly about enyoing life, is in between the lines about being absolutely devastated, trying to cope with it by telling yourself that everything is fine, while it's actually not fine at all.
Every verse, he sings about how nice it is, is broken, as he puts the ending line always with the actual conclusion: "I miss you", he repeats that over and over. Or like the part when he sings about the blue sky, while not paying his bills. Superficially it looks like he was carefree, but it actually points out that he is/was so depressed and sad, he could not even get his daily chores done .
He is a legend. A true poet and a National treasure in Germany.
Under the video itself it says there were 65,000 viewers. Today this arena can hold up to 80,000 people for concerts. Grönemeyer's album "4630 Bochum" - the 4630 is the zip code at the time - was released in 1984 and he grew up in Bochum. This album was his commercial breakthrough. He has released 17 albums to date. The album "Mensch" is his most commercially successful album with 3.6 million records sold. He recorded it in London, where he retreated after the death of his brother and his wife a short time later. He started making music again because he was afraid of losing it too.
His popularity originally came from playing a supported role in "Das Boot" directed by Wolfgang Petersen. When he was asked what his further long plans would be, he answered that he wanted to concentrate on his core talent to be a musician! Germany was shocked because nobody had ever heard of him as a musician. Well, well we all thought, that he was crazy! With much of luck he got a role in one of the most iconic movies of all time! And then he told us that he wasn't an actor but more a musician!
His album "Mensch" (< "human") is the 2nd most sold album in Germany. Also he sold 19 million records in a country with 80 millionen people < means: almost every household own a record of him. At least - as his songs are played on the radio - everybody in Germany "heard" of him as his songs are aired since 40+ years. Good for you: As Germany has the third largest music market on this planet - there is still a lot to discover! ... of every music genre! :)
What is number one? For a longer time it was said that "Mensch" is the most sold album in Germany ever.
@@tinisunblueThe O.S.T. of "Dirty Dancing" was sold more often in Germany. To be fair: it's kind of a sampler, but registered as album. < which is NOT my fault btw! :) I own both! XD
okay, then the statistics of H. Grönemeyer being most sold in Germany is referring to solo artists and groups.@@JohnHazelwood58
@@JohnHazelwood58 Okay, then the "most successful album" in his case probably referred to groups and solo artists.
@@tinisunblueset the list ...
Thank you for your reaction to Herbert Grönemeyer live in GELSENKIRCHEN.
There are said to have been around 60,000 to 65,000 people in this football stadium at the time.
Today, almost 80,000 people can enter the stadium for major events.
In addition to being a singer, songwriter, musician, he was also an actor. (1981 "The Boat")
After the family tragedy in November 1998, in which he lost his brother on the 1st and his wife on the 5th, he disappeared from the stage (understandable).
In 2002 he dedicated “Der Weg” to his wife and “ Mensch” he came back stronger.
Danke für die wunderbare englische Erklärung! Grüße aus Hamburg,.
This song was a very huge hit in Germany
It’s a famous Song here in Germany but much more wonderful is : Der Weg
your reaction videos are among the best ever. and you are absolutely adorable.
all the best for you from germany
thanks for your awesome entertainment
I was at that tour in Hamburg. Herbert is an amazing live performer. He is extremely popular in Germany. Great reaction, D . Thank you that you show so much different music❤
I was at this Concert and it was the whole Time amazing!
These are the moments that gie me goosebumps again and again. And that make moments unforgettable.
I saw him twice live: An awesome live artist
The polar bear is the heraldic animal of his record label "Grönland Records".
And the song brings back the normal madness that prevails at his concerts. Everyone can sing along to the songs, he spreads a great atmosphere and his band does the rest.
Btw. I learned from someone who attended the concert that the wave lasted 15 minutes.
And on the subject of "no more empty seats in the whole arena": if he were to play in this arena three nights in a row, it would look like this on all three nights. You still have to be very quick if you want to buy tickets through the official channels. And the black market prices for his tickets are twice to three times higher than the official price. On the tour 21 years ago, he could have played twice as many concerts as he did. There's a small catch: he did have chaperones for his children who watched his back, but ultimately he was solely responsible for them. And they were just at the "easy-care age" of thirteen and fifteen (where you never get any stupid ideas).
Your pronounciation of "Herbert Grönemeyer" was really superb. Greetings from the region "Ruhrgebiet" (Ruhr Area), where Herbert is originally from.
Herbert Grönemeyer is a legend. Making great music from (actually before) 1984 until today. He reinvented himself 25 years ago. So many great songs, fantastic lyrics that make you think, laugh or cry.
One moment you are celebrating, the next moment he rips your heart into pieces with his songs.
I'm not the biggest Grönemeyer Fan, but we, my wife (she loves him) and I, went to several Grönemeyer concerts in Hamburg.
He is a brillant live artist. Every concert was exciting and full of joy and he perform in gigantic stadiums. Fantastic live musician!
Mensch is human being. But he has a song „Männer“ (men), too. It’s even older One of the first ones that made him popular.
it was his breakethrough song!
Yay someone actually react to the 9 minutes long clip on Mensch. Great reaction. Wonderful song.
As a child I always laught about him (because only old people listen to that kind of music) but now as an adult I come to realise how beautiful the lyrics are really.
Ich war bei der "Mensch" Tour damals in Stuttgart. Es war ein unglaubliches Erlebnis! Er wollte gar nicht mehr aufhören zu singen! Absolut klasse Stimmung! 5 Jahre später habe ich ihn in Mönchengladbach gesehen. Seine Konzerte waren zusammen mit Rammstein die besten, die ich je gesehen habe!
I was on the “Mensch” tour in Stuttgart back then. It was an incredible experience! He didn't want to stop singing! Absolutely great atmosphere! 5 years later I saw him in Mönchengladbach. His concerts, along with Rammstein, were the best I've ever seen!
Electricity can be said "Elektrizität" but people commonly say "Strom" (like "stream"); "Mensch" ("sch" is pronounced exactly like "sh" in English) is the generic term for "human being", male and female. Herbert is also a popular actor, he was in "Das Boot" ("The Boat"), a well-known movie about a submarine during WWII, and many other TV series and such, often as a villain in cop shows.
The onlyone survive "Das Boot" :)
Grönemeyer is my favourite! He was one of the main actors in "Das Boot"
If you dont know the movie please watch
Really?!? He's _such_ a jerk!
Yes Das Boot WW2 Movie (U BOAT) 1981 by Wolfgang Petersen !
btw, that dude played in Das Boot together with Jürgen Prochnow (who played Duke Leto Atreides in the old Dune movie) shortly before he became famous as a singer.
Great reaction..again 🤘🤘 greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
Herbert- Ikone❤
Grönemeyer always brings me back to a better time. I was born in 1997 but my parents (they´ve been at ecxact this concert btw) are huge Grönemeyer fans so I have always known his music. But the best of this is the concert for itself, no smartphone, no one is filming, no freaking live streams on instagram and all this shit. Last time I went to a concert, I got told to stop dancing, cause a roundabout 18 year old girl waanted to film it probably... its so fucked up...
There are only a few other german artists, that have that status of Herbert Grönemeyer. He´s a huge fucking fish in the lake of german artists. I would say the biggest, but also with his status, you cant reach Rammstein or Scooter in any way.
GRÖNEMEYER = LEGENDE. MFG aus BERLIN
Thank you for your Interpretation ♥️
Thanks for your words... (: ...
Thank you for your reaction to German music ❤
Super 👍 ❤greetings from Germany
Also typically German: We like singers who can't sing.
In this case I really like the singer because he had a song called "Currywurst".
You should also do a reaction to Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte, Marius Müller Westernhagen, Udo Lindenberg...
I've been an Element of Crime fan since my youth. The best album for me is still "Try to be Mensch" - it was also the third album I've ever bought (1987), on vinyl of course. My first was The dream of the blue turtles by Sting. I was and am music style fluid.
They started singing the croud/sporting tribute 'oh, wie ist das schön'
(oh, how wonderful! We havn't seen something like this in a long time! So beutiful, so beautiful!)
...und er fragt"meint ihr das optisch oder gesanglich?" 😉
Hi, D.! I don`t like Herbert Grönemeyer that much, but this one song and this "crowd control-performance" is awsome! Just beautiful! This song is special. And I respect his long successful career as a musician and even actor ("Das Boot" and "Frühlingssynfonie", together with Nastassja Kinski). Btw: When he was young he composed a song called "Currywurst"! 😆
Herbert never composed "Currywurst". He just published it. "Currywurst" is from Dieter Krebs.
It is heartbreaking. I think this was the first song to come out after his wife had died. It is about trying to live on and enjoy life - but "you are missing" 😥So sad 🙄
Maybe react to STS - Fürstenfeld Live 2008 if you like a good and clear singing crowd.
its an austrian pub classic about a young man from Fürstenfeld (a small town in austria) that wanted to be a street artist in Vienna.
Yet he failed to get popular and just wanted to go home to his town.
Its a song about appreciating your home and a reminder that you should never forget what you home is.
The man has sold 20 million albums in Germany (#1 alltime, domestic and international).
He is the biggest grossing touring artist of all times in Germany as well.
Your first reaction to one of his songs (Der Weg) was with English subs ❤
The song before was about he lost his wife to cancer. Very sad! And this one is about to not give up!
your german is really good
Best line: "It is okay, it hurts the same all over". Germans are happy with so little.
and complain, at the highest level
It's funny how you found yet another German musician who's insanely politically active, just like Die Ärzte :)
Look to Herbert Grönemeyer Der Mond ist aufgegangen, the same man, the same Stadion, the end of a conzert
I'm not sure whether a translation into English comes across as well as the original German text. After all, this is not a modern pop song, but a lullaby that is several centuries old. I think every single word counts. But I agree with you that his version is magically beautiful.
He might bei Not the nices Singer but, he makes beautiful Texts. The was the first song after the past of His beloved wife...
"Oh, they love him..." LOL In Germany Uns Herbert is more an institution than a musician...
❤
I'd like to know what it feels like to be on stage at that moment.😅
I think pure madness
He absolutely loves live shows. And you see on his face when they do the wave that he is at peak happiness.
He is very susceptible to shedding tears of joy. Still does today (for example, on the tour last year)@@Goddybag4Lee
I'm sure some thoughts like "What the... is going on here?" is part of all that, too.@@Goddybag4Lee
I think you could compare him to “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen in regard of adoration and popularity in Germany. Yeah, could be right… our German equivalent to Bruce Springteen
Germans Often Got A Message.
Please react to the german marching band Meute
This one is pretty good, to show you how big and important Herbert is here.
But my personal favourites are the older ones, cause he is famous for soo long here. From his 1998 album "Bleibt alles anders".
Try this one (unfortunately without subs, but the comment section will help you with that if you give it a try 😉)

and especially this one
‘Fanatisch‘

(it's a bit creepy but good and the video is like a short movie. Amazing!)
But I also love the classics like 'Männer'

(video from german tv 1984 😂)
and 'Was soll das'

Enjoy to deep dive into one of our biggest and long lasting musicians 😊
Greetings from Berlin 😎
Was that before or after the death of his wife and brother?
After...
On November 1st, his brother and just 4 days later on November 5th, 1998, his wife, both died of cancer.
That was four and a half years after. And many songs of the album refer to grief, not giving up and clear your view for the future.
Mensch means human. Mens in Afrikaans
Mensch wird im US Englischen auch Man übersetzt. Mankind=Menschheit
The Translation is not 100% korrect
Mensch means Human not Man
Translation isn’t the best but I guess it’s ok…
Gröhlemeyer or Dröhnemeyer ...
Ok my friend, thanks for this raection. Great song, great growd, but i don't like him as a person. He is also known for political statement during his concerts, and for ME this does'nt go together. Wrap your message in music and play your song, but don't act as a politician on the stage. My point.
Fun fact, this stadium is sold out by RAMMSTEIN 5 days in a row in Juli 2024. 5 times 65000 people.
You are welcome to think otherwise, many people have a different opinion. Many people particularly like Herbert Grönemeyer precisely BECAUSE he openly communicates what he stands for. He grew up in the Ruhr area, where migrant citizens were and are completely normal. And if you're referring to his speech in Vienna: he's right. If politicians can't get their act together to create a climate in which no one is excluded because of their gender, sexual orientation, skin color or origin, we have to create this climate ourselves and show politicians how we imagine living together.
i dont like the gröhlemeyer ....
terrible voice terrible singing
As always, it's a matter of taste, luckily we don't all have the same taste... But even if you don't like his singing or his voice, the lyrics, his unmistakable lyrical streak, are still unparalleled to this day!
@@nilskanter2892 i just cant stand his terrble shouting i also dont like rap music no matter how good some lyrics may be
by the way it was not so terrible when he was junger but in the last 20 years its just terrible
It's easy - just don't listen to that music - listen to music you do like and keep it yourself.
@@pippavombr5856 i will listent to the music i like but i wont let some people i dont give a fuck about tell me what can say and what not
If it was only that - way worse is his fascist attitide to non-leftists!
ich war auf der Tour in Wangen (stuttgart) .. : ( es macht mich unendlich traurig daran zu denken... it makes me so fucking sad to see this :(
Even Germans need German subtitles to understand this guy mumbling.
LOL
