I remember the "premiere" of this song on a German entertainment show. It was the first appearance after his wife's death. He asked to leave the stage immediately after the performance, without the obligatory thanks to the audience for leaving. I cried like crazy and I still get a big lump in my throat when I hear that song.

It is hard not to cry while listening to this song. 😢 After his wife's death he actually did not want to come back onto stage again, but his children made him return and it seems like singing these songs onstage was some kind of therapy for him. You might enjoy "Mensch" live 2003 which he also sang in this concert. It is about the hard way back to life after such a loss and trying to enjoy life again. Watch it until the end - this will show you how much people felt with Herbert and tried to make him feel better again. Love from Germany ❤

The true magic of this song is that there are so many deeper, underlying thoughts in these lyrics - and every person will find something else they can relate to. One thing that stands out to me is the casual and unconcerned way he tells us that he considered suicide as "I'm too lazy to give up" , which to me really hints at his origin "Ruhrpott", where people are very pragmatic, familiar with the ugly and rough edges of life and never take themselves too seriously. The other would be "You never betrayed your plan for happiness", where in German, the word "verraten" can mean both "betray" or "reveal". I love that they mean two different things but both can be what he meant to say: She never revealed her plan for happiness, which elevates her to have known something we all may never know and she never betrayed her plan, never gave in to despair until the very end.

It took him 4 years to get back on stage after the passings and this was apparently the first song he wrote after he thought he couldn’t any more. I believe his little daughter made him promise not to stop singing.
It’s a homage to his wife. The lyrics are more precise original. He really packed good memories, denial, gratitude, grief, resilience and a yes to life after loss in a couple of minutes.

After his brother died by cancer, a fews days later he lost his beloved wife (Anne, she was an actor and "curtains close" is another reference there) to cancer and he immediately stopped his very successfull career to fully focus on his children. Nobody thought he will be seen in public ever again. At some point his little daughter said "Papa, please do not stop your singing" and he came back 4 years later with this. The video you've watched, was his first tour after all he went through. And I think you can see how he is using the crowd as therapy.

Herbert Grönemeyer's song "Der Weg" is a deeply emotional reflection on the loss of his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer. The song is filled with grief and longing, but it also shows how Grönemeyer processes his pain and finds solace in the memories of their time together.
The song opens with a haunting sense of despair: “I can’t see anymore, I no longer trust my eyes.” This is a powerful metaphor for the emotional shock and confusion that comes with losing someone close. Life seems to lose its clarity, and even reality feels questionable. Grönemeyer expresses the internal numbness and struggle to regain a sense of meaning. The line “Emotions have twisted” reinforces this idea: things that once felt clear and stable are now distorted and incomprehensible.
As the song progresses, Grönemeyer portrays the internal conflict that often accompanies grief. The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.”
A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared. The line “We were sworn, would have died for each other” is a testament to their profound bond. It conveys a sense of soul connection and complete trust - a love so deep that they would have done anything for one another. This statement highlights the intensity of their relationship, making the loss all the more painful.
The comparison of life to a “wild ride” is a poetic image that speaks to the unpredictability and speed of life. A wild ride is difficult to control, symbolizing how events spiral out of control and how fate seems unstoppable. In this context, Grönemeyer emphasizes that “nothing was too late,” meaning that they had no unfulfilled dreams together, but “much was too soon” - their time was abruptly and painfully cut short. This is the most heartbreaking part of the song: the acknowledgment that death came before their journey together could be completed.
Though the song is deeply rooted in grief and sorrow, it doesn’t end in complete hopelessness. Grönemeyer leaves space for the possibility that life can continue despite the loss: “because there’s always something left.” This line suggests that despite everything, there are still ways to carry on, and that even though the person is gone, their memory and the love shared can become a source of strength.
Overall, the song strikes a balance between profound grief and the realization that memories of the loved one remain alive, helping to continue life’s journey - though it will never be the same. Grönemeyer powerfully conveys that grief is a long, enduring process, but love and memories can serve as comforting anchors in the darkest of times.

Herbert wrote this song for his wife. I saw Herbert several times live on stage and he sang this song every time. Every fan sings this song quiet in respect to his wife but nearly everybody is crying an thinks of his loved ones passend away. My husband and I have an unspoken tradition. White Herbert sings „Ich trag dich bei mir, bis der Vorhang fällt“, we touch our hearts and think of our special persons in Heaven.

Some artists still use it as such... I saw a german rap song with english translation some days ago.Not a big fan of german rap myself, but the artist is my favourite german rapper, if I would have to choose.
It is an older song, late 90's/early 2k's, but the lyrics seem to be timeless, sadly... 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I can't see anymore
    Don't trust my eyes anymore
    Can hardly believe
    Feelings have changed
    I'm way too lazy
    To give up
It would be too early anyway
    'Cause there's always something happening
    We were close companions
    Would have died for eachother
    Bended the rainbow
    Borrowed us confidence
    We tried
To turn around on the shot drive
    Nothing was too late
    But many things too early
    We've pushed eachother
    Through all tides
    Got us bogged down
    Loved eachother desperately
    We have ignored the truth
    Whenever possible
It was a piece of heaven
    That you are existing
    You've flooded
    Every room with sunshine
    And you've reversed every frustation
    Into the opposite
    Nordic upright
    Your gentle kindness
    Your irrepressible pride
    Life is not fair
    Danced the movie
    In a silvery room
    From the golden balcony
    Admired the infinity
    Hopelessly lost in thought, drunken
    And everything was allowed
    Together in a time lapse
    Midsummer Night's Dream
    You've flooded
    Every room with sunshine
    And you've reversed every frustation
    Into the opposite
    Nordic upright
    Your gentle kindness
    Your irrepressible pride
    Life is not fair
    Your safe walk
    Your true poems
    Your cheerful dignity
    Your unshakable skill
    You've defied the fate
    You've never revealed
    Your plan of happiness
    Your plan of happiness
    I'm not leaving
    I've extended my deadline
    Another travel through time
    Open world
    I'm keeping you safe
    Inside my soul
    I'm carrying you with me
    Until the curtain falls
    I carry you with me

I'm German. And as such, I find it sad that the German language alone is associated with a criminal regime. The truth is that the German language is almost unique in its depth, precision and emotionality. It is not for nothing that it was German romantics, writers and philosophers who shaped world history for centuries. In this song and these lyrics you can see another example of this...

"Ä, Ö. Ü" is simple to understand, its just "AE, OE, UE", thats all. Other difference In German compared to English would be that we pronounce an "I" usually like an "E". We in the German language usually use "EI / AI" if we want to pronounce it like an English "I". Of course there are always exceptions like in the English language, but thats usually the case
Other letters that are different would be the "U", we usually never pronounce it like an "A" and we roll the "R", we never dont pronoucne it like in English, its always very prominent. We also pronoucne the "Z" very harsh instead of soft. Iam not a teacher, its just observation so dont take it for 100% but overall ...
If you liked that song you may also like "Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight", "Mariah Carey - Hero / Without You / Endless Love" and of course Whitney Houston "I have nothing / I will always love you / When you believe" and "Celine Dion - Power of love / Immortality / Dance with my Father / Its all coming back to me now / Iam alive.
Of course there are so many more but I also dont want to flood your comment section :p. You also should look into "Jon Secada - Just another Day" Iam pretty sure you will love it, it was also a nr. 1 hit.
Wish you well with your channel and God bless you.

There are other things in the German text that are difficult to translate 1:1.
Stefan Röhrl has made a good video about this:

As a fan of Grönemeyer, I'm happy about everyone who hears his music for the first time. Doesn't matter how many people have done it.

I have never seen a husband suffer that much. He went to the Uk after she died, no interviews no music for 8 years. He was just gone
