Herbert wrote this song after his wife and his brother passed away within only 5 days. How much pain can a person bear? What kind of powerfull result came out of this. This song is an absolute topclass masterpiece of german poetry. I never expected, that by any chance it is possible to translate, but they did great (although it is impossible to transport all the of it by 100%.)

There were about 60.000 people in the arena. It was his first tour after three and a half years of grief and finding a way to raise his two kids. The fans tried to carry him through the concerts. Don't get me wrong and watch other videos of this concert (many are on youtube): He was all in all in a very good mood and this concert was one of the biggest parties he ever had on stage. Until today everyone hangs on his lips everytime he sings this song at a live concert. He is 67 years today and still loves to do big concerts.

100 percent agreed. Sing better than Udo, worse than Maffay, but boy is he simply a poet, and can awaken more imagination and tell stories with two half-sentences full of nasal innuendos than Nina Hagen has put on the sheet music in her entire career. He has brought generations of very different Germans, in good times and bad, to feel and process the same music, regardless of all differences. Basically he should write metal, but that's probably asking too much ;)

To avoid the German paparazzis Herbert and Anna moved to London the last years of her life. Grieving both wife and brother at the same time was so hard, sad and difficult for him that it was absurd (his own words). He took care of their children who lost their mom at the tender age of 9 and 11 I guess. He did hiis best to balance being a dad, being a superstar and in grief for a long time. Finally his daughter said "Daddy can you please sing again?" And out came the album Mensch with this song and the Title song. Amongst the most beautiful songs from Europe ever.

Then this came up and we went silent. She then just looked at me and said: "This man must have loved her so much." and we both started crying like there's no tomorrow. Herbert Grönemeyer's song "Der Weg" is a deeply emotional reflection on the loss of his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer. The song is filled with grief and longing, but it also shows how Grönemeyer processes his pain and finds solace in the memories of their time together.
The song opens with a haunting sense of despair: “I can’t see anymore, I no longer trust my eyes.” This is a powerful metaphor for the emotional shock and confusion that comes with losing someone close. Life seems to lose its clarity, and even reality feels questionable. Grönemeyer expresses the internal numbness and struggle to regain a sense of meaning. The line “Emotions have twisted” reinforces this idea: things that once felt clear and stable are now distorted and incomprehensible.
As the song progresses, Grönemeyer portrays the internal conflict that often accompanies grief. The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.”
A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared. The line “We were sworn, would have died for each other” is a testament to their profound bond. It conveys a sense of soul connection and complete trust - a love so deep that they would have done anything for one another. This statement highlights the intensity of their relationship, making the loss all the more painful.
The comparison of life to a “wild ride” is a poetic image that speaks to the unpredictability and speed of life. A wild ride is difficult to control, symbolizing how events spiral out of control and how fate seems unstoppable. In this context, Grönemeyer emphasizes that “nothing was too late,” meaning that they had no unfulfilled dreams together, but “much was too soon” - their time was abruptly and painfully cut short. This is the most heartbreaking part of the song: the acknowledgment that death came before their journey together could be completed.
Though the song is deeply rooted in grief and sorrow, it doesn’t end in complete hopelessness. Grönemeyer leaves space for the possibility that life can continue despite the loss: “because there’s always something left.” This line suggests that despite everything, there are still ways to carry on, and that even though the person is gone, their memory and the love shared can become a source of strength.
Overall, the song strikes a balance between profound grief and the realization that memories of the loved one remain alive, helping to continue life’s journey - though it will never be the same. Grönemeyer powerfully conveys that grief is a long, enduring process, but love and memories can serve as comforting anchors in the darkest of times.

I just love Herberts Songs. Alternate translation. More accurate imop:
    I can no longer see,
    No longer trust my eyes,
    Barely believe,
    Feelings have turned around.
    I'm too weary
    To give up,
    And it's too soon
    Because something always works out.
    We were conspirators,
Would have died for each other,
    Bent the rain,
    Borrowed trust,
    We tried
To turn around in free fall,
    Nothing was too late,
But many things were too early.
    We pushed through
    All the tides,
    Got lost,
    Desperately loving each other,
    We lied about the truth
    As best as we could,
It was a piece of heaven
    That you exist.
    You flooded every room
    With sunlight,
    Turned every frustration
    Into its opposite,
    Nordically noble,
    Your gentle kindness,
    Your indomitable pride,
    Life is not fair.
    Danced the movie
    In a silver room,
    Marvelled at eternity
    From the golden balcony,
    Hopelessly sunken, intoxicated,
    And everything was allowed,
    Together in fast motion,
    Midsummer night's dream.
    You flooded every room
    With sunlight,
    Turned every frustration
    Into its opposite,
    Nordically noble,
    Your gentle kindness,
    Your indomitable pride,
    Life is not fair.
    Your confident gait,
    Your true poems,
    Your cheerful dignity,
    Your unshakeable skill,
    You faced fate
    Head-on,
    Never betrayed
    Your plan for happiness,
    Your plan for happiness.
    I'm not going anywhere,
    Extended my stay,
    New time journey,
    Open world,
    I have you safe
    In my soul,
    I carry you with me
    Until the curtain falls,
    I carry you with me
    Until the curtain falls.

    Der Weg, englisch Lyrik
    The way
Click to see the original lyrics (German)
I can't see anymore, I put no trust in my eyes anymore,
can hardly believe anymore - feelings have turned around.
I'm much too lazy to give up.
Would be too early anyway, because something always works out.
We were conspired, would have died for each other,
bowed the rain, lent each other trust.
We tried to reverse, full speed down hill.
Nothing was too late, but a lot too early.
We pushed each other through all the tides,
we frittered, loved each other desperately.
We lied about the truth as good as possible.
It was a piece of heaven that you were there.
    CHORUS
You flooded every room with sunshine,
converted every displeasure into its opposite.
Nordic noble - your gentle kindness,
your irrepressible proudness... Life is not fair.
Danced the movie in a silver room,
admired infinity from the golden balcony.
Hopelessly sunk, drunk and everything was permitted.
Together in time lapse. Midsummernight's dream.
    CHORUS
You flooded every room with sunshine,
converted every displeasure into its opposite.
Nordic noble - your gentle kindness,
your irrepressible proudness... Life is not fair.
Your confident pace, your true poems,
your bright dignity, your unshakeable aptitude.
    You made head against destiny.
Never revealed your idea of happiness,
    your idea of happiness.
I don't go away, I extended my term.
    New time travel, open world.
I have you safely in my soul.
I'll carry you with me until the curtain falls.
I'll carry you with me until the curtain falls.

    Wiki:

This wasn't the worst translation, but he's too poetic to be translated. I would have to record a whole video just to explain what stff like "hast den Regen gebogen" actually means.

Please make a reaction video to "Andreas Kümmert". He was very polarizing in Germany. He could have been one of the greatest. First he won the voice and then he won the sec preliminary decision for Germany. But he didn't accept the victory live in front of the cameras. The whole of Germany talked about nothing else for days. What a talent.

I think if you want to react to some "non gangster" german rap/soul that makes you teary eyed watch this: "Max Herre - 1ste Liebe (MTV Unplugged) ft. Joy Denalane". Great arrangement, like really GREAT musically even if you don't understand the lyrics and know the backstory and if you do... it's really touching. Like, I watch it about every half a year and still get goosebumps.
The condensed backstory is the two of them Max and Joy were lovers and pretty well known musical group in the late 90s early 2000s, they have children, brokeup and now are still friends and look back at their relationship. Joy Denalane might be the best german female vocalist out there, atleast in the soul genre.

Hey guys, germany here. Maybe you react the Song "Mensch" from the same album (Mensch/ human) like Der Weg.
Mensch was sold over 500.000 copies as single in germany in the release year 2002.
Really cool Song, a bit more speedy as Der Weg.

Yes from the same concert. But not the clip that is about 7 minutes long it has to be the clip that is 9 minutes long. The audience after Mensch and this song sung just before Mensch are epic.

Ok, so I think besides Rammstein as a band, Grönemeyer is probably the best German single musician and I love his songs to pieces. But I don't think you can get it with translations only. He is not the best singer by a far shot, but he is a unique singer (which you only realize when you understand german) and his lyrics are on a scale from heartwrenching to exhilerating when you understand them. Maybe I am wrong and you can really enjoy him translated, do tell. If you are interested in more I will look forward to your reactions, but I am still not sure how good they would work.

Yes it is. But I'm not sure if there's a good translation of it and a little intro to explaining it a little bit. You almost need to understand German to really appreciate it as it should be.

@@tinisunblue Yes I know. But somehow all the English versions loses something. Even though I know about his Banana-English is the original language for all his songs still the German is superior in every single time. The staccato makes rock songs better, the Ruhr-area accent makes him so soft and he is so poetic.

      @Goddybag4Lee 9 месяцев назад +2

@@tinisunblue I can understand that Bochum is horrible in English. It needs to be patriotic and therefore in German. Was Soll Das and Vollmond is so strange in English. One feels like Google has translated it (Was Soll Das) the other one (Vollmond) loses all the Syncopation that the drums and the lyrics go through especially in the leading up to the choruses.
