I'm German. And as such, I find it sad that the German language alone is associated with a criminal regime. The truth is that the German language is almost unique in its depth, precision and emotionality. It is not for nothing that it was German romantics, writers and philosophers who shaped world history for centuries. In this song and these lyrics you can see another example of this...
The irony is that the true depth of the lyrics are incomprehensible for non-speakers. That's what makes it so difficult to explain the beauty of the German language: you will only understand once you're fluent enough to read the captions knowing that important parts of meaning just didn't make it into English. What you initially state about the association with the 3rd Reich has a nuance often forgotten by Germans: the "fear" stems from an acknowledgement of the power of the language. Abstract, metaphorical language (like Obama's "yes we can") can only go so far. German has the ability to create concrete concepts on a level not reproducible in English. So yes, what allowed German-thinking writers to create incredible masterpieces is what allowed the masses to be captivated by megalomaniac, genocidal rhetoric.

Herbert Grönemeyer's song "Der Weg" is a deeply emotional reflection on the loss of his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer. The song is filled with grief and longing, but it also shows how Grönemeyer processes his pain and finds solace in the memories of their time together. The song opens with a haunting sense of despair: “I can’t see anymore, I no longer trust my eyes.” This is a powerful metaphor for the emotional shock and confusion that comes with losing someone close. Life seems to lose its clarity, and even reality feels questionable. Grönemeyer expresses the internal numbness and struggle to regain a sense of meaning. The line “Emotions have twisted” reinforces this idea: things that once felt clear and stable are now distorted and incomprehensible. As the song progresses, Grönemeyer portrays the internal conflict that often accompanies grief. The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.” A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared. The line “We were sworn, would have died for each other” is a testament to their profound bond. It conveys a sense of soul connection and complete trust - a love so deep that they would have done anything for one another. This statement highlights the intensity of their relationship, making the loss all the more painful. The comparison of life to a “wild ride” is a poetic image that speaks to the unpredictability and speed of life. A wild ride is difficult to control, symbolizing how events spiral out of control and how fate seems unstoppable. In this context, Grönemeyer emphasizes that “nothing was too late,” meaning that they had no unfulfilled dreams together, but “much was too soon” - their time was abruptly and painfully cut short. This is the most heartbreaking part of the song: the acknowledgment that death came before their journey together could be completed. Though the song is deeply rooted in grief and sorrow, it doesn’t end in complete hopelessness. Grönemeyer leaves space for the possibility that life can continue despite the loss: “because there’s always something left.” This line suggests that despite everything, there are still ways to carry on, and that even though the person is gone, their memory and the love shared can become a source of strength. Overall, the song strikes a balance between profound grief and the realization that memories of the loved one remain alive, helping to continue life’s journey - though it will never be the same. Grönemeyer powerfully conveys that grief is a long, enduring process, but love and memories can serve as comforting anchors in the darkest of times.
Herbert Grönemeyer is a trained theater pianist. When a director had to fill a musician's role, he took him on stage and the musician became an actor. He became internationally known through the film "Das Boot", which was the start of a career for many. Herbert decided to give up acting and, despite two unsuccessful albums, to just make music. His third album at least made it into the charts, but the label terminated his contract early due to lack of success. He released his fourth album on another label, which reached number 1 in the German album charts, like all the following ones. More than 96 Weeks in German LP-Charts (LP: "Mensch"), most famous singer in Germany since "Bochum" ^^ After the death of his half-brother and his wife, it took him a year to get over it. But he has two children and giving up was not an option. Today he is remarried.
Herbert Grönemeyer and his wife Anna had two children at the time she died. Marie and Felix had been 9 and 11. It was a shock to Germany that this young mother and wife of one of our greatest artists did not beat breast cancer. Each person suffered with them and knew everybody can be in the next second in the real nightmare does not matter how hapoy you are together.
I can assure you that the German lyrics are the true gem of the song, much better than the translation, so precise about his emotions. What a song, what a poet.
It is so touching how much you got captivated by the song. I guess, the lyrics have been translated automatically? Some of the translations were literally wrong, and others did not get the correct meaning from a variety of possible translations. I am still happy that you could understand and feel them on a different level. Music in fact, *is* a universal language. If you are not touched by this song you have a heart made of stone. I don't know, if you already have reacted to "Mensch" by him, it is pretty emotional, too, and so lyrical. I also recommend "Wir werden uns wiedersehen" and "Von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit"by "Selig". But I could not find any version with lyrics or lyrics, that were correctly translated. In fact, there are so many real good German songs and musicians. But they are usually hard to (automatically) translate since there are a lot of word plays that can't be translated.
Herbert Grönemeyer is also an actor. Maybe you have heard of the 1981 film "Das Boot" directed by Wolfgang Petersen. Grönemeyer played one of the main roles in it. If you have the opportunity to watch the film, I would recommend it.
There's also a Dutch version (but more soft and smooth), sung by famous Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis (same title in Dutch: "De Weg") - ruclips.net/video/vuGcIfMq65A/видео.html (from original Guus Meeuwis channel) - by the way... check out some more music from him, he made very emotional songs, sad ones same as happy ones. The song which made Guus popular in 1995 was 'Het is een nacht (Leevensecht)' ... much fun with discovering :)

The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.”
A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared.
His ballads. LG
There is another very touching and beautiful German song about loss. Phillipp Poisel - Eiserner Steg (Klavier Version).
More than 96 Weeks in German LP-Charts (LP: "Mensch"), most famous singer in Germany since "Bochum" ^^
After the death of his half-brother and his wife, it took him a year to get over it. But he has two children and giving up was not an option. Today he is remarried.
Herbert ❤ Please check out also Mensch and Kopf Hoch, Tanzen. What a great artist he is.
He wrote this song because his wife (great love) and bis Brother dies in 1 week. Everbody loved this song. Best wishes from germany. Bye ...
He lost his wife and brother in just a few days and this song is dedicated to them both.
I can assure you that the German lyrics are the true gem of the song, much better than the translation, so precise about his emotions. What a song, what a poet.
The song is also a processing of grief about his wife, who went before him.
Herby is from my Hometown, Bochum. Such an Good Singer, but sometimes not understandable even as an German :D
Listen to Balu by Kettcar, for me the by far most beautiful german lovesomg ever
The meanings of the words and their sound in this song cannot be conveyed with translations, what a flood of emotions are in this song
Herbert Grönemeyer is also an actor. Maybe you have heard of the 1981 film "Das Boot" directed by Wolfgang Petersen. Grönemeyer played one of the main roles in it. If you have the opportunity to watch the film, I would recommend it.
Das zweitbeste Lied zum Thema Sterben ist : Geboren um zu Leben. Gesungen von:der Graf.
Maybe you know Grönemeyer. He was an actor in "Das Boot."
❤

The Song is for his women wich had breat cancer an died of it . 😢
🙏
There's also a Dutch version (but more soft and smooth), sung by famous Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis (same title in Dutch: "De Weg") - ruclips.net/video/vuGcIfMq65A/видео.html (from original Guus Meeuwis channel) - by the way... check out some more music from him, he made very emotional songs, sad ones same as happy ones. The song which made Guus popular in 1995 was 'Het is een nacht (Leevensecht)' ... much fun with discovering :)
Hi, great video. Thanks. Could u make a reaction to the following song, please? Its a hymne for peace. One of the most powerfull songs ever. "Reinhard Mey & Freunde - Nein, meine Söhne geb' ich nicht [Offizielles Video]"
He wrote another song for his wife. Mensch is the name of it. There is a 9.56-minute-long video that you should watch till the last second. You will not believe the immense love he receives from the crowd. Please watch it: Mensch, live at Gelsenkirchen, 2003

it's about his dead wife and his way back in a normal life and to allow himself to enjoy life.
He lost his Brother and Woman in one Year.........
he dedicated that song to his wife. he lost her to breast cancer
There are two german artists, who write the deepest lyrics today. Herbert Grönemeyer and Udo lindenberg. Both are notorious for not having any real talent for singing. They just write epic lyrics and than barking or mumbling them out to us.
and Westernhagen
Its not so easy for non native german speakers to "feel" the song how its written....
3:52 das Finale
Unfortunately many words differ in their depth and understanding.
if one vocal whatever is covering a song, they all follow along. By now ive seen 10 YT reactionists covering the same song... very sus
There are other things in the German text that are difficult to translate 1:1.
Stefan Röhrl has made a good video about this:

This German lyrics can't be translate adequately into another language. English is "too simple", sorry to all English speaking people, but that's the truth.
