      @@LorenzoPedretti-h6x My wife is Italian and we live in Italy now. She introduced me maybe 9-10 years ago. When I heard him I was like, "Let's go see him live!". Then I sadly learned he had already passed away.

    • @LorenzoPedretti-h6x

      Yes in January '99 from lung cancer, he'd been a heavy smoker all his life. The news on the TV at dinner and my mom crying about it: one of the most vivid childhood memories I have.

    • @LorenzoPedretti-h6x
      @LorenzoPedretti-h6x 3 дня назад

      Since then my family bought his entire discography and I learned to play a bunch of his songs on guitar. This became important later on when I realised how many people are still happy to listen to and sing his repertoire. On the anniversary of his death there are many spontaneous gatherings in public squares in the main Italian cities where people sing and play until around 2 am. I've been there too and it's phenomenal. For many of us he's a huge part of our lives.

      Thank you! I will try! Some of my favorites of his like Don Raffae seem almost impossible to translate well.

    • @Handrewallheimr
      @Handrewallheimr 14 дней назад

       @jamesthepanther
      It's true. Some of his songs are in dialect and, Don Raffaè in particular, make sense only if sung with the original lyrics because they express the feeling and way of life of that region from which they mimic the dialect. Since it is a very limited thing it is difficult to express interest in cultures so distant from those realities.
      Don Raffaè is sung in Neapolitan and expresses the way of life of that city, of those people, of that reality where, in front of a coffee (if Italians are known for espresso Naples boasts of being the city most tied to this tradition) even a policeman in a prison does not refuse to pay homage to a local criminal boss. Clearly, such songs are almost to be excluded unless one day the world discovers Neapolitan culture and Don Raffaè would then make sense to be translated and exported.
      Other songs are more "global" and deal with themes that we can all identify with, for example "La Guerra di Piero" which talks about the horror of dying in war,
      "Via del Campo" which talks about a village's prostitute,
      "La città Vecchia" which talks about the common life of the "last" of society,
      "La canzone dell'Amore perduto" which talks about having loved another person...
      Personally I enjoyed translating them and singing them with their base and I must say they work well with adaptations like you did, maintaining the important concepts.
      Many others touch on current themes or the philosophy behind them: La canzone del padre, Sally, ballad of blind love, river Sand Creek, un chimico, un matto, bocca di rosa, Tito's last will...
      In short, I love that you discovered them and want to export them. You are my hero.

      @ De Andrè is a great artist! So far my favorite Italian artist for sure. I first learned about him maybe 8 years ago…and I told my wife “Let’s go see him in concert.” But then sadly I learned he had passed away.

    All'ombra dell'ultimo sole
    S'era assopito un pescatore
    E aveva un solco lungo il viso
    Come una specie di sorriso
    Venne alla spiaggia un assassino
    Due occhi grandi da bambino
    Due occhi enormi di paura
    Eran gli specchi di un'avventura
    E chiese al vecchio dammi il pane
    Ho poco tempo e troppa fame
    E chiese al vecchio dammi il vino
    Ho sete e sono un assassino
    Gli occhi dischiuse il vecchio al giorno
    Non si guardò neppure intorno
    Ma versò il vino e spezzò il pane
    Per chi diceva ho sete e ho fame
    E fu il calore di un momento
    Poi via di nuovo verso il vento
    Davanti agli occhi ancora il sole
    Dietro alle spalle un pescatore
    Dietro alle spalle un pescatore
    E la memoria è già dolore
    È già il rimpianto d'un aprile
    Giocato all'ombra di un cortile
    Vennero in sella due gendarmi
    Vennero in sella con le armi
    Chiesero al vecchio se lì vicino
    Fosse passato un assassino
    Ma all'ombra dell'ultimo sole
    S'era assopito il pescatore
    E aveva un solco lungo il viso
    Come una specie di sorriso
    E aveva un solco lungo il viso
    Come una specie di sorriso
