tekken 7 is garbage ..only 3 fights in arcade mode until the 2 bosses. .....lame ... doa 5 is sooooooooooooooooo much better

it's actually a really big thing and makes low parries considerably more rewarding
it's 1:30 AM but anything just to hear Brandon's voice reviewing a game.
Man the story mode of this was so underwhelming but the combat was SO GOOD. Definitely a great addition to the series and the inclusion of Akuma was surprisingly well done, can't wait for the next game from the Tekken team

one small thing that was incorrect in the review - there is no chip damage in tekken. blocking is always the best answer. sidestepping is mostly to create a whiff from your opponent for you to punish.
Akuma's fireballs chip, I'm fairly certain.

If you block a rage drive and you hit a wall, you also take chip damage
Also no, blocking isn't always the best answer, you WANT your opponent to whiff and punish, not block and wait for your turn
Tekken was my first Beat 'em up love and it will always have a place in my heart(-drive)
this game is highly addictive, not a huge fighting game fan but damn ive been playing non stop and i cant wait for DBZ fighter z to come out.

I've been waiting 20 years to have Tekken on PC, it's a dream come true!
Even if I've already bought the game I always come here to watch EZA reviews because they are such a step above the rest.

Just an FYI-if you rack up 2000 battles in any mode, win or lose, you unlock all the customization items. This includes all the gallery art and movies. That's not any 'one' mode either, your total is gathered across all game modes. You can see your battle tally under Player Information.
Great review Ben. I completely agree with all points you made, positive and negative.
With a little more polish in storymode, tutorial and arcade battles, Tekken 7 could have been a perfect culmination of the series.

That ending of the vid with Kazumi Mishimas theme! Wish she played a bigger role in story, but she's a blast to use. Still holding onto hope for Julia/Jaycee to get added, but I've played the game every day since release, taking my attention away from Injustice 2, which did some stuff better. Certainly a great time to be a fighting game fan.
As a casual fighting game fan I've always enjoyed tekken even though I struggle to even be good at it. The lack of a training mode being included after how good TTT2's was is very disappointing to hear. On top that ARMS also just released and is much easier for me to understand inputs and I'm already in the action and competing in an authentic way.

Very good review, Ben (and of course Jones is the best VO guy for stuff like this in the business). I always feel like Tekken is stubby and the control is very unreliable/unresponsive compared to Virtua Fighter or DOA (which essentially control the same), that said, I think its the best Tekken yet by a huge margin, and that your review is on point. I can't get over that you never unlock Nina's spy catsuit from the Story mode for regular use though.

A tournament is instantly disbanded if the host leaves the lobby. So everyone loses out on their earned rewards and stats. Thought I'd add my two cents since you forgot.
Been playing since launch, easily the best fighter released this year. I2 was fun but the gameplay here is on a whole other level. Loved the review.

Its a good fighter, but its really lacking in content compared to its predecessors, mainly the lack of certain modes like Survival, Team Battle or Tekken Force, a few missing characters like Lei and Anna and the rather low amount of customization when compared to T6 or TTT2.
And "Treasure Battle" becomes a frustrating and bland grind for the good customization items that you cant buy with neither in-game currency nor real money. (Im aware that every item is unlocked after 2000 wins in Treasure Battle, but that takes a REALLY LONG time.)

Bandai Namco released one if the laziest Tekken entries in the series, as a long term player this game is such a middle finger to people playing the games for the last 20 years
So many characters omitted or playable for an additional price
Yet, even more single player content taken out. What even is there for offline players to do. The online servers are dreadful, just like with 6, what is fun about sitting in a lobby for 15 mins just to get a communication error or severe unplayable lag

Totally unrelated, but I gave Persona 5 a try because of how much Ben hyped it up for me. I had no interest in it having never played any of the other games. Man am I glad I gave it a shot! The game is fantastic and I've been playing way more of it then I should haha. So Ben if you see this... thank you my dude.

Eh, I still prefer the series before the lunar gravity and super bounce mechanics were introduced, but this is still far better than the forgettable T6. Nicely done review as usual.
I was only really disappointed with this game because they decided to take out force mode (which plays like streets of rage if you didnt know) which is by far the most fun thing for me to do in a tekken game. Treasure mode sounds like golden arena without the leveling up and getting new stats, but the new items you can get are interesting.

There was a weird period between Tekken games where all the characters got disturbingly thick. I feel like it was maybe after Tekken 4? Suddenly they all look like pro wrestlers . I feel like everyone used to be more lean.
you are right. it started with t6. But in t7 you really can see the difference. Just compare kaz from t5 to t7.

Jason Darr it was during the E3 streams, somehow CHIM got brought up (I guess they were talking bout skyrim) , chat just ran with it, CHIM reached max saturation, EZA banned it for one year

No mention of the fact that there's no Team Battle Mode. If you're playing couch vs mode, you're forced to play 1 match at a time and quit to go back to main menu to choose vs mode again. What once felt fluid and almost seemless, now seems like a chore.
ashjimmymilo Totally agree! Tekken 3 was my most played Tekken game. I remember, in team battle, you could pick 'random' in character select (the '?') and pick it seven times. Then every time you select 'rematch', it would pick seven new random players for you automatically. Every time. It was such an awesome feature that's been completely removed from the series after Tekken 3.
It allowed you to run back the matches quickly without having to reload to the character select screen. Best part is, it was completely optional! Want to keep your 'main' with 6 randos? Sure! You want your 3 best chars and 4 randos? Have at it! Want the same 7 chars every time? You got it! Without ever having to go back to character select.
With loading times being ~15-20 seconds in TK7, even with an ssd on PC (and longer on console), over the course of an extended play thru 1v1 feels like you're loading more than you're actually playing.
I was significantly better than my buddies at the time, so being able to handicap myself in team battle 3 vs 7, balanced the game for them, it wasn't just me handing them their ass over and over 1v1. They need to bring back the Tekken 3 team battle system!
ashjimmymilo this is not true. You can just select rematch or character select... you are not forced to quit or anything. team battle would be nice tho.

You aren't. I only don't own this game because it doesn't have Tekken Ball and the like.
I wouldn't be able to play it well with my laptop but I want as much returning features as possible.

Of note that the arcade mode only has three fights before getting to sub boss. Very silly to make it so short - nothing classic about that mode.
Easy Allies and Angry Joe are the only reviews that matter in the gaming industry imo
I would argue that ACG could be thrown in that list and is more relevant than Angry Joe imo who takes way too long to make a review and has been focusing on more than just games. (movies)

While I have been enjoying Tekken 7, I think I would give it a slightly lower score than Ben. I don't feel like there's enough to do offline. Team battle mode has been left out from 7, Arcade mode feels a little pointless now that the character endings have been moved to the story mode section (also, not every character gets an ending, which is disappointing) and there are no bonus minigames like in previous entries in the series. Also, hiding some of the best cosmetic items behind a paywall (the season pass) is a bit annoying.
As for online, while each fight I've managed to play has been really fun, matchmaking has been terrible for me, sometimes taking up to 30 minutes to match me with another player. I'm sure it will become more stable as the game gets new patches, but it's inconvenient for anyone that bought the game early on.
The micro transactions ruined this game
The fact that the game shipped without staple characters like Lei Wulong makes this a no buy for me. Sure it'll be added as dlc, but I doubt that it is going to be free.

For casuals in the YT posts, this game is a 7/10, for anyone who actually takes the FGC seriously, this game is an 11/10. Street Fighter 5 is a pathetic joke compared to Tekken 7, and many pros have already started swapping games. The fighting game genre in general never has been, nor ever will be for casuals, and that's just fine.
He did not mention that lot of default iconic characters are missing from the game and they will be added as payable dlc-s. For example Lei, Bruce, Anna and so on. Shame on you Namco.....
HTS Anyuci Harada said that only fighters that are brand new to the series will be paid DLC. Any legacy characters patched into the game will be free updates
That is ok but that does not change the fact, that lot of characters are missing from the start. Never happened before in Tekken. Very very sad :(

I like this game but it lacks a lot of content, there are also some stapple characters missing.

I believe this game deserves a 7 at most. As solid as the combat is, i feel like its been the same "solid" for 10+ years now. theyve played it too safe throughout the years, baring a few fun tweaks here and there that dont make it from game to game anyway. beyond that, I find the games graphics to be a disappointment. I have the playstation 4 version and some parts of the game look really low res. Story mode is a cringe worthy experience through and through, and in my experience the online takes forever to find an opponent. As excited as i am for a current gen tekken, this is a totally non-essential update. The idea that it took this long to release is a little confusing.
I agree, but it's not really Tekken that's the problem, it's the fighting game genre as a whole for the past 20 years. Despite the new glossy graphics, more content, and online modes, fighting games really haven't made ANY progress towards the actual gameplay. I feel like it's a genre that's already in its death bed if not for the big market in asian countries. I've played Tekken 5 on the PS2 ages ago, and it feels incredibly similar to what Tekken 7 offers. They really need to spice things up... Maybe make a campaign that's actually good might help. Treasure battle is repetitive, the story mode is so short and ends on a cliffhanger, and arcade mode doesn't even have an ending for each character. Since I'm not really a competitive player this game just falls flat for me...
Find a character you like to play. Each character is a game into themselves and you won't be able to get that deep into the game unless you stick to one character. They absolutely rebalanced the game and adjusted frame date but that's not something you will be able to notice.
Im exclusively a heihachi player. been playing the game on and off for years, though I will admit that i only have an intermediate level of experience. As much as i love the idea of tweaking a system that works well, there are way too many things that have remained exactly the same for far too long. There is no need for voices, hit sounds and death animations to literally be carried over from game to game. Even though the rebalancing from game to game is significant, the overall package doesnt justfiy a $60 price tag in my mind.
fine tuning a machine is nice, but dont try to keep selling me the same car for over a decade.

thats definitely a good point, however: the combat system itself is absolutely top notch without a doubt, but again, way too many things about the game as a whole have stayed the same.
I feel like if namco could (theoretically) patch a game as old as tekken 5 to play exaclty like tekken 7. besides the graphics being downgraded, nothing would be an impossibility to add to tekken 5. you absolutely cannot say the same thing about street fighter, mortal kombat or killer instinct as far as i know.
Tekken 7 is the best fighting game out right now
I found the game to lacking a lot. Not to mention how ugly the game looks graphically compared to it predecessors from the previous gen. The amount of game modes and especially characters is lacking as well. I mean Tekken 6 had 40 characters and Tag Tournament had 68 if I am not mistaken. I get that this game is an entry, but why limit us on the playable characters at launch? They are going the season pass route to give us these modes and characters that should have been there from the start. I love Tekken, it is my favorite fighting game franchise. This entry has some great things, but the lack of content hurts.

First time I've ever openly disagreed with an EZA review, Tekken 7 is the Soul V of the series. The Super meter moves are a complete waste to the game and cutting out modes like Team Battle shouldn't go unnoticed. Compared to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 this game felt like it's trying to get a different following. And as a result lost a lot of the appeal that is Tekken. Worst since T4 in my view. And a bad Tekken game.
+tolucafreak Don't play Street Fighter but the fact you find them "fucktards" makes me wonder why you defend a Tekken game with Akuma and a Super meter. Seems you're everything you hate.
+suplextrain Not going to tell you what you can like or dislike but I heavily disagree.
I include SCV because of the Super moves that have (in my opinion) no place in a 3D fighter. I Don't think SCIV is much better, but feel it's slightly better than SCV which to me took the series too far in the wrong direction. First three I enjoy very much.
+suplextrain You would be incorrect on how I think, but that's how speculation works. I enjoy change when it improves the core gameplay, not when it's a tacked on gimmick for the sake of it.
I liked Rage in Tekken 6, bound from T5. I also like when character became more unique with move-set modifications from both the Soul and Tekken series.
"Having a meter is perfectly fine" And that's ok that you think that? But again, disagree. It's less about the meter and what the meter does in my opinion. Super moves do not work in a 3D space, it's a pointless edition to streamline Namco Fighting games.
You enjoy what you want however, I'm not telling you how to enjoy a game. Just don't think I'm nostalgic because I have a different and very vocal view_
