I think the argument "Why do you care about a story mode in a fighting game?" is rendered mute when you consider the fact that you don't give a shit about characters if you don't know their goals, struggles, etc. Just take killer instinct as an example. The undead woman was played experimentally by players, but no one actually gave a shit about her, since we knew jack fucking shit about her.

But the season pass states that the 2 characters coming are guest characters, which is fine. But Lei and other demanded Tekken characters better not be added through paid DLC! -_-

In regards to the missing characters from previous Tekken games, Harada has stated that there will be DLC for those characters, but those particular characters would be free. The guest characters from other franchises, such as Geese Howard, would be the only paid DLC characters available. Other than that, you bring up many fair points. Especially the lack luster story for the side characters.
I only say this as a creature of habit but I much prefer your old background where you're sitting on your couch - I guess it makes me feel more... relaxed when watching. I know it's pathetic but I just really miss it.

I actually discovered Tekken series, when I first time played Tekken 4 Demo on PS2. My dad bought Tekken 5 and I fell in love with the game. The game has such memorable charaters, awesome gameplay and a really cool and well designed boss Jinpachi Mishima. Unfortenatlly some asshole who borrowed the game from me scratched the game and I couldn't play it, so sadlly I haven't been playing Tekken for years, until I got a PS3 and bought Tekken 6. Tekken 6 may not be as good as Tekken 5 in my opinion, but the game is still fun to play, if I know how to play some of the charaters and use their combos right. I heard Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a really good fighting game for PS3, so I am planning to get that game aswell, if I can find it at stores. Love your reviews suspect and can't wait to see more of them. Keep up the great work my good man! :)

Although I don't know if you have any plays to look into your most favourite Star Wars character, 'Jar Jar Binks', I figured I'd bring up the 'Darth Jar Jar Theory' and see if it might be an interesting read for you Unusual Suspect. Late to the party, but also a fan since Tekken 1, and I had all of the same praises and criticisms as you. Honestly didn't even notice the texture issues on characters, but yeah, fantastic fighting, super light on content. Atrocious online, disappointing that Bruce, Lei, etc aren't in the game, as well as team battle which was always my favorite mode. Great review man.

This is an old review but... How come you didn't comment on the fact that a major part of the story involves the freaking guest character. Seriiously, the main antagonist of freaking Street Fighter is more important to the story than Jin
Anyone else annoyed by that fact that in the Mishima Story Mode, every standard character has only one round to fight? Couldn't they have stretched it out like in the Classic Arcade Mode

I feel like this review is going to describe MVCI in the same way - bad graphics, bad lazy attempt at story, absent characters and online issues... but look at the nice gameplay, woooooo! Starting to think most fighting game groups are just catering to the evo 'pro' crowd now with such an empathizes on this.
I know this is a minor thing but something that also bothered me was that Jin doesn't have a Character Episode. I know he appears in the Story Mode and all the other characters in the story mode don't have a Character Episode either. But the thing they all have in common is that you get to play as them at some point in the story... except for Jin. He is the only character that appears in the story that isn't playable and doesn't get his own Character Episode, Claudio wasn't playable in the story either (at least you got to fight him) and he got his own Character Episode so it really bugs me that Jin doesn't get anything at all...
I've never really got into the Tekken franchise. I've only played Tekken 3 (I think. I was a long time ago.) and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. And because I was more use to the gameplay of the Mortal Kombat series, IE Mortal Kombat 9, I couldn't get into on how the game played in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Well that, and I was getting real frustrated with the final boss Unknown. I could get to her no problem, (granted on Easy mode. Again I wasn't use to how to play Tekken Tag Tournament 2) and then I'd get my ass kicked by Unknown.
My thoughts 1st completely agree with the good stuff 2nd I loved the story from start to finish i wont say why cause spoilers 3rd i thought Character episodes were nice ( i can watch KUMA and Migules all day ) and better done than tekken 6's arena mode 4th Treasure battle having Ghost battle, survival and Bonus fights rolled into One i thought was sweet and makes it alot of fun 5th Old characters will be back but Team Tekken have said they will only charge for the Gust characters 6th i can wast half a day just in Customization and Juke Box AND 7th ( i swear thats not on purpose ) Loved your review It cracked me up DOOD keep up the good work and umm......lets see...........Oh yeah VR is pretty pointless this game didn't need it
This was a pretty great review and right on the nose. I have a couple of friends who own Tekken 7 and they pretty much say that yeah the lack of any more game modes is definitely jarring especially when you compare them to the Past games but yeah all the other characters that are usually alumni they just disappear for no reason. It's still is a solid entry it just needed a bit more ironing out like make the story mode more interesting make arcade mode you know like how it usually is and give us Tekken Bowl which I have heard they are giving us that as DLC. On the bright side at least I won a match using Eliza so that's something I guess it may not mean much but damn it it's a victory with a narcoleptic vampire so I'll take it.
They said any old Tekken character that gets added in will be free without the need of the season pass. the season pass is just for cosmetics, stages and two other guest characters.
Yeah, about that paywall.....last I checked, all the DLC characters are limited to just guest characters. We already have Geese Howard announced, and now we wait till next year for the next reveal. I have heard nothing about any previous characters returning via DLC. Granted, I wasn't expecting Tekken Bowl as DLC, but that doesn't mean any character that isn't in the initial Tekken 7 roster will be locked behind a paywall. I'm not saying it won't, just that I don't expect it.
It would have been nice if they had included a Character Creator as well. If Soul Calibur allows you to pick a Character's Weapon/Fighting Style, then surely Tekken could do the same.
Matt Thornton - Nahhh lol. Tekken is about picking from the roster and showing who represents you. Are you a cheeky trickster? Pick Lei. Are you a master grappler? King is your answer. Are you the best in the universe? Paul says hi. I feel like I'm the reason the slow-motion K.Os are in the game. But personally, I also hoped for a photo mode out of all things. On that note though, better customisation too (huge step back from Tekken Tag 2) and the grandest wish of them all would be a movie maker.

Fair enough; I would recommend it regardless. Fantastic game with a pretty sizable roster, story and visuals are brilliant as well! Looking forward to Ep.3 review, remember to take your time; don't rush it :)

Well at least the roster is far more better then Soul Calibur 5, because that game took out a lot of my favorites characters, except Nightmare, Siegfried and Algol, but NO TAKI that really pissed me off.

You are wrong about character DLC, Harada has said Legacy characters wont be payable DLC. Only guest characters and Eliza cost. Other then that, good review.
Back then you only have to buy the game and that's it, no DLC shit. The whole game is already there, you just have to work/grind for the contents to be unlocked and i liked that. In tkken 5 they give you less than 10k gil every fight which makes you work for expensive items. And ending cutscenes cannot be unlocked with gold. But then i guess devs knew that they're TK7 endings were shit anyway so why work for it XD. Now they give you 90-120k per fight and the most expensive costumes are 1 mil. wow they really fed it into our mouths
Eh, I understand VR in Tekken specifically when I think of what used to be at a GameWorks near where I grew up: a Tekken machine with player inputs based on the physical movements of two people (kinda like Wii long before its time but full body). I think it was based off Tekken 2 or 3, but I am not entirely sure. It looks like the viewpoint is kinda screwed up; going from character perspective could be interesting, maybe with hands and feet visible (sorry, Kuma players). It was janky but a lot of fun.
I need to get into Tekken, I have Tag Tournament 1 on PS2 but I never had the time to play it Unless there's a better, cheap alternative, I'm all ears I'm more of an Injustice/Smash Bros/Marvel vs Capcom/Budokai player myself but I'm up to new things
Personally, I honestly don't care about arcade mode, or the story, or whether there's little side things like Tekken Bowl (although I did spend a hell of a lot of time on that for some reason...) If I want any of those things, I'll read the wiki or load some brainless flash game on a browser. It really is all about the fighting, IMO, and I think Treasure Battle is a really good way of getting that in offline mode. I do wish it was easier to find online battles in my location though... The only thing I'd really like is a Blazblue or Guilty Gear style tutorial system, particularly since I am a TOTAL NOOB. I mean, seriously. I have a 10% win rate online as Hwoarang, and a 30% win rate as Feng... and that's my best character. EDIT: Oh, and yes, it is disappointing that some characters are missing. Would particularly like to have had Lei and Kunimitsu. And Bruce and Marduk.
Good review, but I'd personally give the PC version a 9 given that I've only been really playing online. I'd only really take points off for missing characters but all my characters are here except for Anna and Bruce and I rarely use Anna and Bruce
Dragonball FighterZ also has the same lack of content problem as Tekken 7, yet the community is really focused on controls and online lag (important certainly but what about amount of content that makes the game worth the asking price?)
0:50 Yo what TV is that? Also, the reason the graphics look poor is because it only run at about 900p resolution on base PS4 and even less on Xbone. The Pro bumps it up to 1080p but that's still pretty dissapointing. People get a Pro because they want 4k gaming.
That's a 55" HiSense. I got it pretty dang cheap for a 55" too :) It's pretty disappointing isn't it? About these super low resolutions. And I actually don't blame Sony and Microsoft because they can't push the graphical capabilities of their systems too much otherwise consoles would be too expensive. I blame developers for trying too hard. If you can't get your game to run in 4K 60fps on a PS4 Pro, downgrade your graphics a bit!

you know man,the classic characters are said they will added for free,the only paid dlc you will get is eliza,two guests characters,more unique customizations and the tekken bowl mode,so you dont get more from them,also its understandable why they done with this game that,other fighting games do that as well and they get more sales and support/patches on the game,tekken tag 2 was supported just 2 months,while tekken 7 will be for a whole freacking year with more to bring to the table honestly most of the reviewers i seen for tekken 7,miss such infos or just dont look deep enough when they criticize it,so i expect from those who review to take some stuff in consideration and more other things,regular ps4 graphics looks like how they look cuz they cant handle the unreal 4 that good,blame the ps4 not handling bigger graphics,not the game,its more of sony issue,especially with the tekken tunes which you mentioned

Great review pretty much how I feel about the games as well BUT I dunno on what kind of a broken ps4 or tv you were playing the game on but I don't have any of these graphical problems,long loading times or frame rate problems like you did(that PS4 should be cleaned if it has those performance issues).The game overall is less detailed than Tag 2 .Man in Tag 2 the character models had so much going on and they were showing the characters age as well but here we are back to Tekken 4 everyone is 25 years old models.If they just used their inhouse engine Tekken 7 would have had amazing graphics not just ok.But yes the normal PS4 version has a slight blur filter build in to make you feel like the Pro looks better.I'm sorry but regular PS4 can pull off amazing Uncharted 4 graphics and Namco mean to tell me it can't pull off 2 guys on screen in a small stage graphics properly .... sure .And don't even get me started on how some characters hair like Jin and Kazuyas looks like it has duck tape taped over it,Lili's hair looks like it's a wig.The graphics are just not up to par with Tekken standards ,sadly even Injustice 2 blows them out of the water
A bit underwhelming honestly as the games I'm most excited for either weren't shown (e.g. Last of Us 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2) or were already revealed (e.g. Super Mario Odyssey, Detroit: Become Human, God of War, Spider-Man). The best new game to get a reveal I think was Bioware's new game: Anthem. That open world looks insane :)

Yes. MK9 did story mode correctly, and even made me like some of the less popular characters, such as Predator wannabe, and the ninja twins.

Stick with the grey background. Clean and elegant, and you won't ever have to fight a bad key or roast from the lighting needed for a good key.

This was a pretty great review and right on the nose. I have a couple of friends who own Tekken 7 and they pretty much say that yeah the lack of any more game modes is definitely jarring especially when you compare them to the Past games but yeah all the other characters that are usually alumni they just disappear for no reason. It's still is a solid entry it just needed a bit more ironing out like make the story mode more interesting make arcade mode you know like how it usually is and give us Tekken Bowl which I have heard they are giving us that as DLC. On the bright side at least I won a match using Eliza so that's something I guess it may not mean much but damn it it's a victory with a narcoleptic vampire so I'll take it.

They said any old Tekken character that gets added in will be free without the need of the season pass. the season pass is just for cosmetics, stages and two other guest characters.
Yeah, about that paywall.....last I checked, all the DLC characters are limited to just guest characters. We already have Geese Howard announced, and now we wait till next year for the next reveal. I have heard nothing about any previous characters returning via DLC. Granted, I wasn't expecting Tekken Bowl as DLC, but that doesn't mean any character that isn't in the initial Tekken 7 roster will be locked behind a paywall. I'm not saying it won't, just that I don't expect it.

Yeah, this is something I should've praised Namco for a little more; the constant unlocks in this game are great :)
It would have been nice if they had included a Character Creator as well. If Soul Calibur allows you to pick a Character's Weapon/Fighting Style, then surely Tekken could do the same.

I feel like I'm the reason the slow-motion K.Os are in the game. But personally, I also hoped for a photo mode out of all things. On that note though, better customisation too (huge step back from Tekken Tag 2) and the grandest wish of them all would be a movie maker.

I haven't; I REALLY wanted to review it too! But I really need to get to work on Ep. 3. Tekken 7 is what I was more excited for so I reviewed that instead.

Well at least the roster is far more better then Soul Calibur 5, because that game took out a lot of my favorites characters, except Nightmare, Siegfried and Algol, but NO TAKI that really pissed me off.

Well if that is the case then kudos to Namco; but still, ideally all characters should be free. Harada's prided himself on giving out free DLC in the past, he should stick to his guns.

What do you think about Injustice 2, looking at this review i am more inclined of geting Injsutice 2 first then Tekken 7
Back then you only have to buy the game and that's it, no DLC shit. The whole game is already there, you just have to work/grind for the contents to be unlocked and i liked that. In tkken 5 they give you less than 10k gil every fight which makes you work for expensive items. And ending cutscenes cannot be unlocked with gold. But then i guess devs knew that they're TK7 endings were shit anyway so why work for it XD. Now they give you 90-120k per fight and the most expensive costumes are 1 mil. wow they really fed it into our mouths
Eh, I understand VR in Tekken specifically when I think of what used to be at a GameWorks near where I grew up: a Tekken machine with player inputs based on the physical movements of two people (kinda like Wii long before its time but full body). I think it was based off Tekken 2 or 3, but I am not entirely sure. It looks like the viewpoint is kinda screwed up; going from character perspective could be interesting, maybe with hands and feet visible (sorry, Kuma players). It was janky but a lot of fun.

Personally, I honestly don't care about arcade mode, or the story, or whether there's little side things like Tekken Bowl (although I did spend a hell of a lot of time on that for some reason...) If I want any of those things, I'll read the wiki or load some brainless flash game on a browser. It really is all about the fighting, IMO, and I think Treasure Battle is a really good way of getting that in offline mode. I do wish it was easier to find online battles in my location though...
The only thing I'd really like is a Blazblue or Guilty Gear style tutorial system, particularly since I am a TOTAL NOOB. I mean, seriously. I have a 10% win rate online as Hwoarang, and a 30% win rate as Feng... and that's my best character.
EDIT: Oh, and yes, it is disappointing that some characters are missing. Would particularly like to have had Lei and Kunimitsu. And Bruce and Marduk.
Learn to duck and when to jump. Duck highs, jump lows (if possible). Press back for mids (guard).
The tutorial mode is trash. Look up avoidingthepuddle for Tekken tutorials or ThemainmanSWE.

Good review, but I'd personally give the PC version a 9 given that I've only been really playing online. I'd only really take points off for missing characters but all my characters are here except for Anna and Bruce and I rarely use Anna and Bruce

Dragonball FighterZ also has the same lack of content problem as Tekken 7, yet the community is really focused on controls and online lag (important certainly but what about amount of content that makes the game worth the asking price?)

Also, the reason the graphics look poor is because it only run at about 900p resolution on base PS4 and even less on Xbone. The Pro bumps it up to 1080p but that's still pretty dissapointing. People get a Pro because they want 4k gaming.

It's pretty disappointing isn't it? About these super low resolutions. And I actually don't blame Sony and Microsoft because they can't push the graphical capabilities of their systems too much otherwise consoles would be too expensive. I blame developers for trying too hard. If you can't get your game to run in 4K 60fps on a PS4 Pro, downgrade your graphics a bit!

you know man,the classic characters are said they will added for free,the only paid dlc you will get is eliza,two guests characters,more unique customizations and the tekken bowl mode,so you dont get more from them,also its understandable why they done with this game that,other fighting games do that as well and they get more sales and support/patches on the game,tekken tag 2 was supported just 2 months,while tekken 7 will be for a whole freacking year with more to bring to the table
honestly most of the reviewers i seen for tekken 7,miss such infos or just dont look deep enough when they criticize it,so i expect from those who review to take some stuff in consideration and more other things,regular ps4 graphics looks like how they look cuz they cant handle the unreal 4 that good,blame the ps4 not handling bigger graphics,not the game,its more of sony issue,especially with the tekken tunes which you mentioned

Great review pretty much how I feel about the games as well BUT I dunno on what kind of a broken ps4 or tv you were playing the game on but I don't have any of these graphical problems,long loading times or frame rate problems like you did(that PS4 should be cleaned if it has those performance issues).The game overall is less detailed than Tag 2 .Man in Tag 2 the character models had so much going on and they were showing the characters age as well but here we are back to Tekken 4 everyone is 25 years old models.If they just used their inhouse engine Tekken 7 would have had amazing graphics not just ok.But yes the normal PS4 version has a slight blur filter build in to make you feel like the Pro looks better.I'm sorry but regular PS4 can pull off amazing Uncharted 4 graphics and Namco mean to tell me it can't pull off 2 guys on screen in a small stage graphics properly .... sure .And don't even get me started on how some characters hair like Jin and Kazuyas looks like it has duck tape taped over it,Lili's hair looks like it's a wig.The graphics are just not up to par with Tekken standards ,sadly even Injustice 2 blows them out of the water

A bit underwhelming honestly as the games I'm most excited for either weren't shown (e.g. Last of Us 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2) or were already revealed (e.g. Super Mario Odyssey, Detroit: Become Human, God of War, Spider-Man). The best new game to get a reveal I think was Bioware's new game: Anthem. That open world looks insane :)
