  • OverDrive host Bryan Hayes joins SportsCentre to share his reaction to Pierre-Luc Dubois being traded to the Capitals for Darcy Kuemper, and explains why he wouldn't go "anywhere close" to the forward who was only acquired by the Kings last year and given a huge contract.

      He's also one of the only commentators who's properly understood this trade from the Caps' perspective. It's smart for them. Dubois is the best player they could probably get this summer, and they needed someone good. After the Gretzky chase it over, the team will rebuild. There's honestly very little risk here. By the time the Caps are rebuilt, if Dubois is still in Washington, he'll be much easier to trade or buy out.

    As a Caps fan, I don't have a problem with the trade. Darcy needs to be on a team that can score 4+ goal per game and be able to crawl out of the early deficits he puts his team into. The Caps are not that team, they could not recover from all of the early goals he gives up and the late period momentum killers.
    He was a bad fit from day 1, anytime the Caps had success, it was with Charlie in net. PLD may not be a 100+ points per season player, but even getting someone that can score 20+ goals per season would be huge for how offensively challenged they have been. In the time that Ovi has been with the Caps, they have had one other player reach 40 goals(Semin did 1 time) and only Backstrom, Semin, Green and Oshie have reached 30 goals.

    • @irafair3015
      @irafair3015 Месяц назад +2

      PLD's problem is not that he can't score and accumulate points, he can and most likely will. His problem is he is lazy and will stop skating at the worst times when things get tough for him. I'm a Kings fan and I thought bringing him to LA was a mistake from the beginning. However, there were times when he looked great but most of the time he just skated around casually not skating hard with his line and just flat out refusing to back check when the team needed him. He'll be very good for the Caps in the first year then drop off drastically after that. That's been his M.O. everywhere he's played. Maybe he'll change now that he's closer to Montreal where he really wants to be. 😉

    • @meowza
      @meowza Месяц назад

      @@irafair3015 "He'll be very good for the Caps in the first year" I think that's all they want. The Caps are on a one track mission to get Ovi the record. If PLD can help get him there and fall off a cliff afterwards, job done. They're not playing for anything else for a long long time.

    • @misakikoko4500
      @misakikoko4500 Месяц назад

      @@meowza I think it's more than that. Both teams are dumping a player they have regrets signing. There is more upside to PLD. The Caps don't want to pay Darcy's salary to a goalie that's not their #1. They have no confidence in him between the pipes.
      Darcy to me seems like the way Varly was with the Caps, he may give up 4 or 5 goals in a game, but wont give up goal #5 or #6 if he needs to shut the door. The problem is the Caps no longer have the firepower to comeback from all the early goals Darcy gave up.

    • @riff5fki
      @riff5fki Месяц назад +1

      As much as people on the outside want to point and laugh at the Caps, and talk about contracts and terms, it's incredibly obvious how little about the Capitals they know.
      Ovi has two years left. We need someone to help dish the puck to him to beat Gretzky. In that time, it really doesn't matter that much if we win or lose as long as the young guys are putting their best foot forward in depth roles and the vets ride out their contracts.
      This trade cost us nothing, and in return we get 7 years to see if we can pull another Strome and make him reach his potential. If it doesn't work out, we're not going to be good in that time, it's fine.

    Both teams trading away players that did nothing for them but both players still have the capacity to make an impact in the NHL.
    Fun fact: Kuemper faced an average of 15-20% more shots than Lindgren, a fact that showed it's head in the playoffs where Washington allowed 5.5 shots per game fewer than it's season average and 4.5-6 fewer than Kuemper's average game.
    Which means their style of game changed with Lindgren in net. A better defensive team than Washington could do well with Kuemper. It worked in LA for a bit and it worked in Arizona.
    For Dubois, a team needs to realize where he fits in and how to motivate him.
    If he wants that spotlight, see how he does with it.
    Telling him he's not good enough to play on the top line clearly isn't it, at least not by default.
    At the same time, figure out WHERE he fits on that line.
    Edmonton has McDavid feeding Hyman and Bouchard, and if you asked anyone before that started producing if it was smart, they'd have said no pretty quickly.
    But it does work.
    Finding that pairing means McDavid and Draisatl don't have to play together, at least not all the time.
    And when they do, both players have clearly improved on their capacities.
    When it comes to Dubois, I personally DON'T think we know what kind of player he is in the league, and I personally don't know if even he knows.
    He's clearly waiting for someone to feed him the answer, and maybe that's why it never clicks.

      @@JarradBruessel32was a fourth liner, based on what? The Kings take a guy who wants the spotlight, tell him he's not even second line material, and you think that's going to be what makes him better?
      Sorry, but if you put me on the 4th line, I don't give a shit HOW much money you pay me.
      You're getting a 4th line performance.
      Call it petty, I don't give a shit.
      But if a team pays THAT much money to basically say (less than a month in) you're not good enough?
      Man, good thing the Oilers never had a period of absolutely horrible play this year, just top of the West, looked like Cup contenders ALL SEASON.
      They demoted him quickly, because they figured they overpaid and wanted a quick return.
      But they never considered they'd have to find linemates that actually worked best with how he plays.
      Not every NHL player plays well with everyone.
      Gretzky is a great example. How many Cups did he win after Edmonton? How many dozens of scoring titles? He didn't have a total washout, but his ability to change games was drastically altered due to change in play and chemistry with his teammates.
      For Dubois, the expectation is that he'll be hot out of the gate (clearly not the case) and can play with anyone (also, not true).
      But his coaches don't want to take that time to make that work, even if it means he COULD be a far better player as a result.
      The idea is that the best NHL players play well with everyone and that's not accurate. The best play decently with everyone, but notably better with those who fill in their gaps and cover their weaknesses.
      Maybe PLD can't admit what his are or his teammates aren't suited for covering those gaps.
      Like Bouchard with McDavid, it's rarely the guy you think it would be either.
