Again, I've never too much interest in bait fishing off the shore, but the way its presented is very much like a documentary rather than a fishing vlog, i think this is what makes your videos very engaging, fantastic
I am new to your channel (month or so). What I like most is your humility, you are a nice guy and no matter which friend you are out with, I see either the father figure or a caring friend. Tight lines my new friend!
I have never fished abroad mainly due to the unknown aspects of travelling with fishing gear. But after watching your informative blog and videos and doing some research myself i feel confident and comfortable about booking a fishing trip in the future. Much appreciated
Another great watch John. I spent a couple of days (in December) in Funchal almost 30 years ago, beautiful town and the fruit n veg market was amazing. lovely weather for mid-winter too.
These videos are great John. I nearly got out there for a week in the 80's on Roddy Hayes boat, but sadly it never materialised due to unforeseen circumstances. Keep them coming!
I enjoyed that so much. I'm not a proper fisherman, I only fish a handful of times a year off the coast of Wales and only catch dogfish if anything! Great seeing people who know what they are doing and thank you for sharing it.
I always enjoy the videos john. I enjoyed seeing all the small fish. They were all beautiful. The jet black one with the bright blue lines that was near the start of the video was my favourite.
Nice vids. My other half is from Madeira. Her cousin is a keen angler from Funchal. In summer once we groundbaited liquidised bread near a breakwater and then float-fished prawns, really light gear. So many species of bream, gar, mullet. Must admit, cousin Tiago had a pretty old-fashioned attitude towards keeping small fish, but we ate them all, cooked outside local-style. Great island. Great memory.
Great video John, thanks. Madeira is just fabulous, going there in April for the third time in a little over a year. Verdant and beautiful sums the place up. Oh and clean and warm as well! 😀
Another top video mate. Great time at boatlife this year. Even tho u made me jump out my skin from the manly bear hug. Great too see you again and cheers for the merch!!!
Haha. They was over the moon to have met you. And of course as your top fan and all that was great to see u again. The girls came home saying they met someone off the tv 😂😂. Speak soon John. #fanboy 😂
Great video John....loved you catching the new species of Stingray, particularly after hiking up Tom's pants so we didn't see "down under." Well done gentlemen!
We parked in the Silver Zone car park at the airport, cost around 60 pounds for the week and there's a transfer bus every 25 minutes and you leave your keys so you won't lose them lol. Yeah the fish market was disappointing but the fruit and veg market upstairs was incredible. Beautiful island and the people are so friendly. 🙂
The little pier you stayed up is very popular for Madeira lure anglers producing Sierra and Barracuda, we saw two small Barras about 3 and 4lb respectively, but, videos of the Sierras are quite common. Well done on a thoroughly informative and entertaining video, it is a beautiful island, but, you were unlucky with the weather.
Yep , enjoyed this John, the fishing of the mini species there are so many! Did find this one interesting as seeing how different cultures do things is a learning curve in itself. cheers bud , appreciate your efforts. Hope you had a good boat life show also 👍🏼👍🏼🎣
Great interesting video John, just shows it’s impossible to predict the weather. Fishing in Madeira is definitely challenging. At least you both got back safe.
Lovely island John, been there a couple of times, the scabard fish is a delicacy normally cooked with banana. The landing on the island is also quite testing with those cross winds
Good back story...Magnificent place really... Those duck billed ray sub types are turbo charged from what I've seen of them. You could nearly cast a bait from that balcony...
great video. ive yet to fish madeira but have fished fuertaventura several times. i believe the silver fish you caught is a palometa. ive caught them on small lures in the past.
I always enjoy the videos John, Just sorry your trip wasn't so good but you are right sometimes the small fish are king, they save the blanks and if I am honest, when I was a kid just starting fishing the local Canal just outside my back garden it was the small Roach and perch that got me into a lifetime of fishing.
Nice to have a vicarious holiday. I know ye're predominately a fishing channel and were probably frustrated at the start, but I thoroughly enjoyed all the other stuff; sharing your knowledge and attention to detail. Amazing place. What a ridiculously windy winter it's been! Never known one like it. The days are getting longer, thank goodness. Best, Mark And can't that man afford a belt? 😂 👍
We had planned to do some hiking around the island but the poor weather completely put halt to that. So yes a little frustrated. But we had a good trip.
Challenging conditions but you managed to land some nice fish! Would love to see you fishing in Cape Verde, I went last year and had a great time fishing from the beach right next to our hotel. Landed a thresher shark, a big jack and many more.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video, some evil looking fish came out of those waters. Can’t help thinking of Steve Irwin she I see barbs like that on those Rays.
You need some dedicated travel rods (telescopic or short section), they're much easier to carry around, especially when flying. German manufacturer DAM currently offers the best price/quality ratio on these i.m.o., but living in the UK you can look for old Shakespeare travel rods from the 80s, those are pretty much indestructible.
When I was growing up in Canada, that's all my dad had, that I can remember. We used to play with them in the garage (until he caught us and we got in so much trouble 😅). There are a few fishing lakes in my hometown in Alberta that he took us to fish when I was maybe 8 or 9. He showed us how to kill and prepare them but it made my younger sister cry so we never got to go again until we were much older, and out in BC. But he always had those, so I just assumed until I started watching John's videos that that's all there was.
@@TheFishLocker There are heavy duty models able to cast as much as 1.5Kg (that's a bit over 3 pounds). They're often labeled as heavy carp rods or feeder rods and can easily handle a 20+Kg fish on the line (when coupled with and adequate reel, of course).
Yes, the fish market was a bit disappointing, I was looking forward to that. Lucky you caught all those species so we could see a better selection ! When do you recon you'll be putting your pots out John ?? 👍🏴.
If you ate Espada at anytime thats Black Scabbard Fish, very very good eating as well, at least you didn't have the original short runway to land at that I did when I was there in 1999 , the aircraft had to bank hard over and land fairly heavily ( think WTAF type landing in a jet !! ) and the same taking off you were up and hard over to the sea to avoid hitting the cliffs !!! , they extended the runway about 20 years ago so better all round !
There are too many variables - also, for the time it would take to make the video properly compared to the number of people who the video would be relevant to is small.
I don’t know much at all about fishing but have been a swimmer and water lover since before I could walk, and once had a dream to become a marine biologist, so when one of your videos was suggested I was curious… and here I am on my second one-enjoying the gorgeous scenery and interesting content-but also because you’re probably the most pleasant person I’ve ever encountered on RUclips lol. Such a lovely voice to listen to-you could be reading an encyclopedia and I’d stick around till the end 😄
Thank you very much, that is a wonderful compliment that I have not recieved before. I am really pleased to hear you enjoy our content. Have you seen any of our underwater diving footage yet? Those are my particular favourites. Best wishes and have a lovely day. 😊🎣
Fish market was pretty poor, mostly because of the terrible weather, which you experienced. There are a lot of small inshore boats that just can't get out in those conditions. I've been there and seen the markets bursting at the seams
That is what I suspected. Also possible that due to the weather. Many of the fish may have been bought pre order before reaching market by restaurants etc.
Great video John, well mate left Baku BP and out in China 🇨🇳 sailing a vessel to Singapore then Australia 🇦🇺 and heading back home to Morecambe North West 😬 hopefully fishing for smoothies by the time I get home, vessel is JSD6000 my crane is the 5200Te 💪
I love Madeira and have visited many times, walking up in the mountains is my favourite - truly an island with something for everyone. Did you try the famed 'scabbardfish with bannana'(!) It's really something 😁
Great vid for peps going abroad and nice for the info on the back up of your other Maderia vid. What I want to known is how much the the rod tube cost to transport ? As the last time I took a 2 pice rod abroad I left it there as it was was more than the rod was worth to bring it back !!!
To add the rod tube to this trip was £37. The devious trips to Florida and California was nothing. It was just classed as a piece of hold baggage - that was BA though and not easyJet.
Again, I've never too much interest in bait fishing off the shore, but the way its presented is very much like a documentary rather than a fishing vlog, i think this is what makes your videos very engaging, fantastic

Hi John your right Madeira is a lovely island I was there for 2week 14years ago first 2 weeks in May brilliant. Great video take care.
Cheers John.
Great entertainment. Been following for quite a while now ....Thank you ...
Thanks Norman.
I need a Fishlocker equivalent to rock hounding, mushroom foraging, and fossil hunting. Coastal foraging videos are my jam
Atomic Shrimp has some of what you mentioned.
As mentioned Atomic Shrimp does some rock hounding, we also have some Coastal Foraging videos on the way. 😉👍🏻
I think I've said before, but I do enjoy the full doc-you-mentary of these trips.
Brilliant. I am glad you enjoy them. I will continue to make more.
again you are helping me through a tough time, you and your family are the best medicine for me ty very much
I am sorry to hear you are struggling but glad to hear we can help.
Was nice to say "hi" at Boatlife today. I really appreciate what you do. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed the show.
Lol, gotta love this bloke, gets to digs, first thing he unpacks is a load of deadbait.
Priorities mate. 🤣
Another great fishing adventure despite the weather but that's life but at least it wasnt a completely fish less week
We had fun exploring and the fishing, when we could do it was great.
Glad to see a new one of your wonderful foraging videos. I like them so much! Thank you and both thumbs up!

Hiya, would you consider doing a video on understanding the weather before taking your boat out. Such as weather forecast, swell, tide etc. 🤙
There are too many variables - also, for the time it would take to make the video properly compared to the number of people who the video would be relevant to is small.
