I'm looking forward to that, too. I think the last time I had Octopus for tea was when we lived in Malta many years ago, and it wasn't the rubbery mess that you tend to get here.
Easy recipe popular in Spain. Large pot filled with boiling water, hold octopus by the head ( no need to be alive we buy frozen ones ) and dip the tentacles all the way into the boiling water lift up and dip again three times then put whole octopus in and allow to cook +- 30 minutes if a toothpick enters the top of leg easily it’s cooked. Here in Spain they put a large potato in with the octopus and when cooked, once cooled these are the sliced and plated on a serving platter the cold octopus tentacles then scissor cut in thin rounds and spread on top of the potato. A little salt and pimento is sprinkled on and a good sprinkling of olive oil and then enjoyed with cold frosty and crusty bread. The cooked octopus whole or legs freeze well so no need to run out at any time.

question john purely because im nosey , have you ever kept a note of the baits you put in your pots just to see if lobsters have a preference or if one bait catches more crabs than lobsters or maybe one bait is not worth the effort
do hope i didnt cause offence john its just that my only experience of what goes into a pot as bait is from my childhood when i lived in cromer [60 years ago] when the commercial boys used any & everything so long as it was free or very very cheap as in well past its sell by date ,every thing from dogfish & roker down to smelts & butts .even read stories of long ago when they used fresh water bream when it was still legal

Beautiful film! I just subscribed and surely will enjoy further surprising films. Being from the Netherlands I nonetheless managed to understand most of what you told. At first I guessed you were somewhere near the Scottish coast, but learned in fact it is Cornwall. Thanks for this beautiful look into some sealife and the way you respectfully preserve it for may be the future. Good luck!
I agree with previous comments , what an inspiring person you are, I enjoy being educated in the ways of fishing and have learned a lot. Keep going and safe seas. Great !!
Hello John, I watched last week’s with the enormous octopus, then read in local press about the numbers off Cornwall. This week’s definitely shows that. And soon it will be time for dustbin lid jelly fish by the thousands
Watching you wrestle with that octopus and you saying he has more arms than I have made me laugh out loud. Newcomer to your channel-so fascinating! Such effort! How often do you get octopuses 🐙 in your pots? This is my second octopus in as many videos. Thank you for your positivity and information!
@@TheFishLocker so do you find that you are competing with octopus for the critters you are hoping for? I was curious & watched a video of an octopus “looting” crab pots and leaving the empty carcasses behind!
Great vid as usual. Are there designated areas your allowed to put your pots down or can you put them anywhere and what stops someone taking your pots?
Always interesting and uplifting John, you are a good ambassador for marine sustainability and protection which is just one reason I watch your channel, that octopus was a good size and will make a good meal, thanks for cheering me up on a quiet Sunday night.👍🐙🦞😀
Hi John, have you seen Australian cray pots, they are made from cane and are round, not sure of legal regulations, but I wonder if they would catch lobsters as crayfish are quite similar. They look a lot lighter than your pots. Great vid as usual.
You're an impressive chap. Glad to see the lobster fishery is wisely being look after with care. If others don't do it there will not be anything left to pick up again.
Awesome stuff dude! Wish we still had that stunning clarity now! Was minging today, 2-4m at best. Great haul in the pots! So many octopus about right now its mad! I was chatting to one of the commercial potters at Mylor today and he said they have never known so many.
John I love the honesty of your work, always playing by the rules.. I'm sure there are people out there that take all sorts out of the waters without measuring etc. well done my friend. if you ever come to Ireland fishing I'd love to see a video or even meet you
I am simply doing and living by what I feel is right. Several of my personal minimum landing sizes are far greater than the legal just because I don’t think legal is big enough.

I grew up in the fishing twin villages of Kingsand/Cawsand in the 70s and eighties after my first ten years in Bristol. Great video John. I love that you always keep your knife on hand while dealing with rope from the traps. Have you thought about tying up some thin rope to your safety kill switch to your life vest or back of your belt with a clip. Not a problem if you have your wife with you. Take care!
I watch your vids every now and again, as seeing what is in the pots is intriguing. Hahahaha, you pulling on that octopus was hilarious! I just knew you were not going to win that round!! You provided a good laugh there. Then, once extracted, because of no available bucket, you put it down, saying ' Alright, stay out of trouble'. Not possible, they are slippery suckers, and will be overboard in a trice! Or motoring your boat off...
John, it gives me pride and great pleasure to see you fish with such care for the Sea and what it provides. I'm a hunter and a fisherman and when we respect what God has provided for Us we not only think of now but also the future of our planet. Brother I would love to fish with anytime.

In my experience, when Octopus sheltered "upside down" like that there was usually some heavy weather coming. Those red pots seem to be doing the trick, well done. :)
So far so good. Let’s hope they continue to work well. 👍🏻🦞🐙
@@TheFishLocker john is that you tell me im a winner or is it some scammer talking through here so its not so publicly noticeable.
"Hold still love. You know whats gona happen." My number 1 chat up line 😋
Haha. Does it work?

Beautiful film! I just subscribed and surely will enjoy further surprising films. Being from the Netherlands I nonetheless managed to understand most of what you told. At first I guessed you were somewhere near the Scottish coast, but learned in fact it is Cornwall. Thanks for this beautiful look into some sealife and the way you respectfully preserve it for may be the future. Good luck!
Welcome to our channel. I am from the NE of the U.K. but we live and film a lot of our content in Cornwall.
@@TheFishLocker Thanks for stating your origins. I thought that sounded like a proper Yorkshire accent.
that wrestle with the octopus made me chuckle hilalrious
He wasn’t giving up was he? 🤣🐙
Brilliant fishing 🎣
Thank you Henry. 😊🐙
Great video as always John with a great makes a big difference look forward to cooking the octopus keep up the good work
👍🏻🐙
I agree with previous comments , what an inspiring person you are, I enjoy being educated in the ways of fishing and have learned a lot. Keep going and safe seas. Great !!
Hello John, I watched last week’s with the enormous octopus, then read in local press about the numbers off Cornwall. This week’s definitely shows that. And soon it will be time for dustbin lid jelly fish by the thousands
They are here in the thousand mate.
Helping my second hip replacement surgery rehab- thank you John
I hope you feel better soon.
Superb videos..always interesting and educational...keep them coming...please
Thanks Chris. 😊👍🏻
Well those new pots seem to work John, thank you for the upload, smashing, regards to you & your family. 👍👍👍👍👍
So far so good. Have a lovely day Jacqui. 😊🐙
Another consistently excellent video. 🇺🇸
Thank you Roger. 😊👍🏻
Love the way you talk to your catch “calm down love”.
Its all in the tone. The same tone doesn't work with my life sadly. 🤷🏻♂️
Watching you wrestle with that octopus and you saying he has more arms than I have made me laugh out loud. Newcomer to your channel-so fascinating! Such effort! How often do you get octopuses 🐙 in your pots? This is my second octopus in as many videos. Thank you for your positivity and information!
The local population of octopus has exploded. They are not a common capture here.
@@TheFishLocker so do you find that you are competing with octopus for the critters you are hoping for? I was curious & watched a video of an octopus “looting” crab pots and leaving the empty carcasses behind!
Another excellent video
I watch most of your videos twice, I watch on my own of an evening to chill, then watch with my 6 year old :)
Glad you can enjoy the videos with your little one. 👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker It's a struggle to find gentle, kid-safe videos that encorporate the outdoors
Great vid as usual. Are there designated areas your allowed to put your pots down or can you put them anywhere and what stops someone taking your pots?
Nothing stops someone stealing your pots. Just morality.
Great attitude, great accent, great scenery. Cheers from St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
My pleasure Chris. 😊🦞🐙
Always interesting and uplifting John, you are a good ambassador for marine sustainability and protection which is just one reason I watch your channel, that octopus was a good size and will make a good meal, thanks for cheering me up on a quiet Sunday night.👍🐙🦞😀
It is our pleasure. Have a wonderful day and stay safe. 😊🐙💙
Lol! The octopus was a pill but it made me laugh! I can't wait to see the cooked version!🏖😎
Video in editing. 😊👍🏻🐙
@@TheFishLocker Thank you!! Somehow I knew that!😂 It was your face after the phone call that gave you away!😁
I started laughing when you lifted the bucket by the octopus. Can't wait to see what Jim does with it.
He was really hanging on in there wasn’t he!!’
Hi John, have you seen Australian cray pots, they are made from cane and are round, not sure of legal regulations, but I wonder if they would catch lobsters as crayfish are quite similar. They look a lot lighter than your pots.
Great vid as usual.
Can you send me a link to the Fishlocker workshop? I’ll take a look. 👍🏻🦞
Doing an awesome job! Walked in on my wife watching your video, she was laughing with you about the octopus! I have feed her many of the 8 leggers!
Haha. I am glad that the whole family can watch our videos and enjoy them. 😊🐙
You're an impressive chap. Glad to see the lobster fishery is wisely being look after with care. If others don't do it there will not be anything left to pick up again.
Thank you. I am simply doing what I feel is right.
Ah, that’s my Sunday night therapy out of the way, now ready to face another Monday. Cheers, yet another engrossing video.
Glad you enjoyed it colin. 👍🏻🐙
Awesome stuff dude! Wish we still had that stunning clarity now! Was minging today, 2-4m at best.
Great haul in the pots! So many octopus about right now its mad! I was chatting to one of the commercial potters at Mylor today and he said they have never known so many.
Yeah I speak to them quite a fair bit. Crazy isn’t it. 👍🏻🐙
Love your videos mate. So good to see somebody show that England has fantastic seafood and in abundance. Keep up the great work fella!
On a good day there’s nowhere better.
@@TheFishLocker and as I've said in previous videos several times I always love when you visit Jim. Got super excited when you said the octopus is going to Jim's kitchen I honestly can't wait for it
You can tell you've been doing this a while when you chuck your undersized lobsters neatly into the one part of the sea's surface that is within camera shot!! 👌👌
Haha. We did have someone at the start saying we were throwing them into a bucket out of sight on the side of the boat. 🤣🤷🏻♂️
I grew up in the fishing twin villages of Kingsand/Cawsand in the 70s and eighties after my first ten years in Bristol. I loved it when I was able to go out as a kid doing what you do, nets aswell , Progressed to bigger boats dredging etc but ended up as a lorry driver. My brother has just left the industry. Great video to watch,Ive subscribed. Odd Cornish accent though-which village ?
Welcome to the channel Andrew, I’m actually from the NE. Just married a Cornish lass.
Just found your channel today have been binge watching since brand new subscriber won over by your cheery demeanour and your amazing knowledge of all the sea creature in your area xx
Thank you very much Tina and welcome to our channel. 😊👍🏻
Did you end up using the dogfish as bait for the other pots? Can't wait to see the octopus cook-up.
Yes.
So very jealous of you right now. What a fantastic office!
Doesn’t get much better does it. 😊🦀🦞🐙
Great episode as ever and the weather not being minging just made me laugh. Not heard that in many years
Haha. That’s a fine northern saying. 😉
That octopus is so cool. Did she try to escape from your buckthorn, I heard they are really smart.
Your new pots look and seem to be working great for you. Thanks for the lesson on female lobsters with eggs. You were so kind to her when letting her go.
First haul went well, let’s see how they do test of time. 😊👍🏻🦞
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought about Jim cooking the octopus I wish I could join you Jim’s dishes always look amazing
Video in editing. 😉🐙
I really like this camera angle for pot hauling. Really looking forward to that octopus cookup!
Thanks 👍🏻🦞🦀
When you lifted that bucket via tbe Octopus it proper cracked me up. Superbly funny
Great video John. I love that you always keep your knife on hand while dealing with rope from the traps. Have you thought about tying up some thin rope to your safety kill switch to your life vest or back of your belt with a clip. Not a problem if you have your wife with you.
Take care!
You can’t see it but I do have a lanyard around my ankle to the engine kill chord and as you mention a knife always on hand.
And when v-notching, 'Hold still love', hahahahahaha...
That octopus really was a handful. 🤣🐙
@@TheFishLocker You, thinking you could overpower him, was very entertaining. I actually thought the outcome would be him over the side!
Maybe this is where the expression 'Pot Luck' comes from . . . Can't wait to see Jim's recipe for the Alien Face-Hugger!
It was a great one. 😉🐙
As soon as he mentioned going to the hairdressers with his mom as a kid while holding the octopus I lost it
Haha. Only folks of a certain age will know what I mean.
John, it gives me pride and great pleasure to see you fish with such care for the Sea and what it provides. I'm a hunter and a fisherman and when we respect what God has provided for Us we not only think of now but also the future of our planet. Brother I would love to fish with anytime.
A true hunter has care and respect for the natural world. He understands his place in it and is a steward for the ecosystem. 😊
That V notch thing about swimming in circles is true. That's why haggis have 1 wing bigger than the other so they can fly circling around the top of the mountains.
Very clever. I didn’t know that about wild haggis.
