When you first showed us the bait my first thought were "are they out to catch cthulhu?". Looking at what you caught I would say it were close. those were some cool fish. It never stop to amaze me what is down there in our ocean. As always it is a joy to watch your videos!
When we lived on Anglesey in the 80s my dad used to catch what he called 'Barndoor' Skate all the time....they're truly impressive fish..and delicious too...

Great video John. It's funny that when we're fishing for halibut here of the Southern Oregon coast, skate are a nuisance tending to be a couple of skate to every halibut. The skate run in the triple figures and you can tell when you have one instead of a halibut, as apart from the initial fight, they're like pulling up a wheelbarrow from 300'. Halibut tend to fight all the way up, even though they're mostly half the size of the skate. Looking forward to the rest of the Scottish videos.

Great video that John, some cracking fish there, I love going out on my boat out of Oban myself, although I don’t target the skate as I’ve no power in my right arm after I had a stroke, but the scenery and the fishing is great, thanks for sharing it with us 👍

I so enjoy reading all the reactions and comments and how you and your family positively effect peoples well being around the world that when i saw comments had been deactivated i promised myself i would add a comment if they were ever reactivated. so here goes; Firstly those scottish skate! what fantastic creatures, I agree almost alien like. The respect you give them is admirable and so appreciated by all of us. Secondly, I'm sure by now you must know how much we all love watching you haul your pots, still get overwhelmed by a spectacular Falmouth sunrise or a pod of dolphins or Tuna paying a visit, an occasional John Dory or those magnificent bars of silver you find so well. Thirdly, whether it is a scallop, lobster, crab , squid, octopus, shark, tuna, conger, ling or even those pesky doggies, the respect you show them all is inspirational to us all. Finally, thankyou, just thankyou. please keep doing what you are doing and huge love to you Hannah and James
Some nice fish John ...and Chris. Those catches certainly made that epic drive worthwhile for you both. And its interesting to see how the outer edges of their wings go pink when they are stressed by being hooked. But of course everything goes back to normal once they are returned unharmed.

I like the way you teach us a bit. I now kayak fish out from Crinan, but for Pollack mainly. Also some Saithe & Mackerel. I did get a small Blackmouth this year. You said on another video you won't get political about netting reefs. I really don't mind if you do.

Skates are some of biggest of the bottom brutes and never disappoint. Big ones in West coast US too along with Huge cow nosed rays. They never give up easily and are a worthy opponent 👍👍

Hahaha. And where in Scotland are these big cod to be found? Literally the most sought after fish in the U.K. that literally do not exist any more. A double figure cod is a rare capture now. 1 over 20 is so rare it’s considered a fish of a lifetime in the U.K. now.
@@TheFishLocker eyemouth and torness power station, been catching them of sib, there are still cod in numbers over there of shore, there are lochs still with cod up north like loch linhe, with a bit of luck you could get double figure, if you are really up to challenge go all the way up to orkney, way up north, big cods are caught in there

I used to work on the trawlers out of Skye during the early '90's and those skate would slow a boat down more effectively than a drogue if the got caught in a net. -3 is a doddle. Inland Aberdeenshire had -10 for a couple of days last week and a few years back we got down to -24. Great video. I hope you enjoyed your Scottish expedition.

That small whiting would have made a perfect live bait for bass. When I lived nearby I got quite a few bass on freelanced whiting

I used to work on the trawlers out of Skye during the early '90's and those skate would slow a boat down more effectively than a drogue if the got caught in a net. -3 is a doddle. Inland Aberdeenshire had -10 for a couple of days last week and a few years back we got down to -24.

@@TheFishLocker It's not a bad place to live once you break free from the cities. I don't know your route north but Loch Lommond to Fort William is breathtaking. Cheers for replying, it is a rare thing among content creators these days.
