- Escaping the Winter weather of the UK we travel to the Volcanic Tropical Island of Madeira. 7 days exploring the wonderful island fishing whenever and wherever possible. We battle against fierce storm conditions and find some wonderful fish in the tropical waters surround the shores. If you have any information about fishing in Madeira from the shore or the boat please get in touch with us and we will look to explore it more on a return visit.

Highly consider fishing in brighton everyone will be shocked that there are just suddenly no fish someones fished it all😊😊😊😂😂❤
Try the Our Mary, skipper is South African,he's in Funchal marina.
Madeira sight fishing. I have no experience with them but they have a few good jigging videos in youtube
John, I believe there is a guy called Nelson Gouviea who used to live in Jersey and is now back in Madeira and has a boat. Used to work with him over here. He knows what he is doing. Mike L.
One piece of advice mate, never fish on an inflatable boat 😂 4 people had to be rescued here a few years back because someone thought it would be a good idea to go fishing on a rib, cutting bait the knife punchered the boat, the sea was too rough to try to get back as the boat
You have, bar none, the best fishing channel I have seen. As an avid fisherman, mostly fresh water, I just really appreciate your skills as an angler , as a seaman, and as a cameraman/ educator. And I am with you on what is the best part of every day! Thanks so much for your work. You are even good at pulling up your mates trousers lol.
Haha. A true mate would have pulled them down. 🤣
20:38 Derbio. Silver fish black tip to fins. Excellent video as always.
Thanks mate.
Thank you for all the beauty! It is fun watching you fish, hearing laughter seeing lovely surroundings and interesting fish! You bring a lot of joy.WTH your videos.Don’t Stop💥
Thank you Deborah, it is our pleasure to share our adventures with you.
I've been watching this channel for a couple of years and i love your entertainment. I go fishing i the uk, brighton and always wait for more videos so that i can learn more im only 10 yrs old so i learn from my dad and u of course i would one day love to fish with u
Well done. I bet your dad really enjoys taking you fishing. Good luck the next time you get out. 👍🏻🎣
Thanks😊😊😊
That little silver fish you caught is called a Swallow Tailed Dart here in Australia
Here I am hearing people say it’s a Derbio or a Pompamo. 👍🏻🎣
Not a pompano, sure same family but firey is correct, that is a dart
Oh John. Those micro species. How incredible. Thank you so much for these shares
They are beautiful aren’t they. 😊🎣
That mystery fish at around 20:33 looks to be a pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). They're common in the Mediterranean and around the Canaries and Madeira.
Thank you very much. 🎣👍🏻
I fished on Porto Santo which is south of Madeira The Butterfly rays can be very colorful and there are some really huge rays 600-700lb and bigger! The fire-worms we had a few but had been forewarned, but not warned about the Morays and weavers! Even small Morays can be very vicious when you try to unhook them. They actually will attack, so you need to know not to try and handle them like a normal Eel.
Yeah, it sounds like an insult, but its a local name for them. Did you get my link and message about contacting Roddy Hayes about chartering in Madeira?
I always enjoy joining you, John! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Any time. 👍🏻🎣
Beautiful place to fish glad u both have enjoyed urselfs. A lot of locals watching you and Tom xxx
We were fishing very different to how the locals all fish, I guess they were just curious to what the crazy expats were up to? 🤣
I was in Madeira 18-26 december 2023. What a beautiful place. Was in Vilamoura in October for my 50th Birthday. Gorgeous part of the world. Some of them boats in Vilamoura marina 😍😍
Madeira is a stunning location isn’t it. We look forward to going back soon.
Definitely. I’ll be back for sure. Great video and shame about the weather to begin with. Plenty of species caught though and looks like you had a blast. Locals seemed to enjoy your presence too 👍
I bet it was nice was the weather good?? Looks stunning theirs a few cliffs like that on the Normandy coast also beautiful spot I visited in 2014 for the ceremony june 6th on utah beach it was really cool everyone in ww2 military 🪖 gear really authentic
Such a variety of different fishies. Showing the locals how its done with those smelly dead baits.
Fascinating such variety in rhe base design of rays..such a cool fish really.
I would walk on many surfaces but that wet slipway..
Weelll...no way...i had a near miss once a very thin line....but lived to tell the tale...
It was like a literal ice skating rink.
Love Madeira have stayed in Funchal, many boats that go for Marlin and Tuna, Great place. Good luck.
Beautiful island isn’t it.
Nice one !! I love the sound of a big fish on and the line "sings" under the strain !! Thanks for sharing 👍
Something special about it isn’t there. 🎣💙
Looks a great place, extremely jealous of you and the size of those rays in particular 🎣🐟
Stunning spot. Cannot wait to go back mate. 👍🏻🎣
I caught one of those duckbills of the beach. 76kg, so strong i had to sit down and didnt trust my hands after 30 min, great programme thank you
I’ve had a few similar ones in other parts of the world. One big one on the shore in California. 👍🏻🎣
What a stunning location! Those dog fish just love following you around John 😅
🤣🤣
Hello John i love your commitment to the channel suffering in the heat out there while we cope with the uk weather
Haha. It was just like U.K. weather when we got there. 🤣⛈
Superb viewing, as always. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Glad you enjoyed joining us.
The fish market, in Funchal, is amazing. Black Scabbard fish - otherworldly.
We visit the market in our other video from Madeira
What a bummer to have 2 non fishable days because of bad weather, but inspite of that some absolutely huge rays. Thanks for sharing this video. Greetz from Stipo from Holland
We lost 3 days roughly due to bad weather. But it happens. 🤷🏻♂️⛈
As a Canarian native, you really have to take into consideration the shelter from the winds like a mountain etc. At least in Canaries, the south has less wind, but worse fishing. The north is much better if you want to go on a boat, but watch out for the sea. It gets VERY tough very fast. I assume that the same happens in Madeira.
Pretty much. 👍🏻🎣
Shame about the weather but wow what a trip, great fish caught in beautiful surroundings. Hope you and Tom really enjoyed yourselves, thanks for sharing & all the rigs etc.👏👏👏
Thanks Stephen, it was hard work but we had a blast.
That looked like a great holiday lads , some cracking looking rays and the amount of new species brilliant, thanks for the video John keep up the good work 🇮🇪
We fished HARD the last 4 days but had a great time.
As always John another informative and enjoyable video, i look forward to your video's because i never tire of seeing different species' and techniques you use.
Thank you David. I am glad you are still finding the videos interesting. 😊🎣
Great video as always! That silver fish is a palometa. Great eating when they are around a kilo. They often take right on the surface. It’s a good idea to use burley when targeting the bream species. I spend winters in Lanzarote, some great fishing. Lots of bonito! You should come do a trip!
We learned a fair bit watching the locals catching the bream. 👍🏻🎣
It's a pompano (trachinotus ovatus)
Worth the wait to see this video, thanks John....
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for sticking with it. And sharing the journey! 🐳👍
Our pleasure Chris. 👍🏻🎣
On our many visits to Madeira, the commonest fish was Espada (Scabbard Fish). A deep-water fish: long, thin, black and ugly - but quite delicious. Very bony!
We saw many of them. Gruesome aren’t they.
Excellent video John. Well done both of you!
Thank you very much Mike.
Too much fun. Wish you guys the best of luck!
Thanks mate.
Very good upload, Madeira has some great fishing this time year, Theres some very big Denton there trolling live squid in deep water very slow is the best way in winter, it also has good bluefish the quiet side of the island from shore with lures, I must get back some spring, look forward to your next upload tightlines for 2024 😎🐟🇪🇸
We hope to get back over there soon to have a good crack at them. We were up against it because of weather this trip.
@@TheFishLockerI bet mate weathers always a problem this time of year, if you get the chance Cape Verde is better again for boat fishing really big Amberjacks , many types of big snappers, it also has big rays from shore , Better lure (jigging)trips to go on also, I really like them both but I would say Cape Verde has better lure fishing some huge fish there.great chatting you tightlines 😎🐟🇪🇸
@@darrenwillams3252 - Do you know any folks out there? I’m keen to find folks who own boats before we go out anywhere like this again.
@@TheFishLocker forsure with boats ,I can send you one of the best boats to go in Cape Verde his English is ok ,spainsh fluent, this guy is A great big amberjack guy, I,ll send you link tomorrow 😎👍
OMG @TheTishLocker can't believe I would see you fishing from the island I come from and you actually been to my village porto moniz. Great video as always but this one is definitely special to me thank you
It’s a small world isn’t it. Madeira is a beautiful island. Do you still live on the island? I’d be really interested to talk to any of the commercial fishermen out there? 👍🏻🎣
Hi John thanks for replying , no I dont unfortunately. I've been living in the UK for the last 20 years but I still know a lot of people back home if you tell me exactly what you're looking for I will try my best to help.
Many thanks

@@hugoribeiro364 - Could you please send me a PM to the Fishlocker Fb page or Instagram page. I’d love to have a chat about it.
@@TheFishLocker I've pm on messager
Well done John enjoyed watching it! And that little silver fish you caught was a derbio I believe
We’ve had a few folks say it’s a Pompano. Which is what I had originally thought but dismissed as I thought they were more diamond shaped?
Ye it could be a pompano
Despite the weather you still had a reasonably good time. Really pleased that they have dogfish out there. Keep them coming.
Haha. Wouldn’t have been the same otherwise would it mate. 🤣
@@TheFishLocker no!
20:34 is a Palmeta - Trachinotus ovatus
Thank you.
Really enjoyed the video😀….doesn’t come across that you liked the charter boat experience. The deep sea fish in Madeira are 👍👍👍….looking forward to your return video😀…all the best😀
The boat fishing is something we would really like to explore more of when we go back. But that trip was not good value for money. In fact was our sole regret of the holiday.
So sorry to hear that,John. Losing days due to bad weather is so annoying, but your catches were really informative to anyone thinking about going to fish in Madeira. Hopefully you will be put onto a better charter experience next time…all the best😀🎣👍
@@angelaburke6303- We had planned to give 2 days to charters and 4 days to shore fishing. It just fell that the bad weather cost us some fishing time. But it can’t be helped.
How was your accommodation and can you post details please Thx
Great start to my week John, thank you both so much. Greetings from Cyprus. 🙏🙏🐟🐟❤❤👍👍😎😎
Have a wonderful week Jacqui. 😊
all looks really nice, your a very lucky locker man
Simply sharing what we love doing mate. 👍🏻🎣
Absolutely awesome that you’re fishing all over the world, and sharing that experience with us❤
We are just sharing what we love doing. 😊🎣
@@TheFishLocker and we are absolutely love it!!!
Good evening John and Tom, in the sunshine then!!!!! You caught some interesting species of fish. It was good to see the Penn rod out there with you. No cod or flounder there then! Really enjoyed the video. See you next time. Malc and Ann North Lincs xx
Too warm for Cod and Flounder.
I’ve seen many of those species in Greece. I never found out what the silver one is with the dark tail tips either but they are fast and get bigger than that. I used to see them skipping along just below the surface.
Some people have said they are a Pompano. Which is what I had instantly thought, but dismissed as I thought they were shaped differently 🤣🤷🏻♂️
I fished with lures there John over a week. Lots of lizards and things I didnt recognise before hittng some solid bluefish around Porto Moniz...... unfortunately, days earlier I tried filming a rockpool underwater with my 'waterproof' phone only to find it's only waterproof in freshwater according to Sony so no pics of my Blues, but great fun on a lure rod!
I think Sony are telling fibs there. Cheeky. Shame you didn't get any pictures but well done on catching them. 👍🏻
Yeah thanks for that John, the Mrs has just gone spare cos i told her the butterfly rays were harmless when she waded into the sea in Tenerife and had a dozen 6 footers swimming around her thighs! Some of the local kids did say she was mad though, i just thought they knew her!! :-)
Cheers Simon.
Hahaha. She’s obviously part mermaid mate. 👍🏻🎣
looking forward to the rest of the videos from this series. iam currently bk home in the north east uk but working out in Portugal the weather for this time of year is night and day to the uk lol carnt wait to get back out there in a couple weeks
The U.K. is very poor at this time of year isn’t it.
I was in 20c plus weather 4 days ago come back to 5c probs colder lol.Iam not liking it like on the upside i get to see the kids @@TheFishLocker
Thanks John I do enjoy your travel sessions good results all things considered keep it up 😊
Aye mate. We worked very hard and found some beautiful fish. 👍🏻🎣
The second ? fish you caught , the black one with blue flashes on it was so beautiful, just like the second from last one,, the reddish one, they don't have to be huge to be beautiful ! Great video John 😉👍🏴
That’s right Phil. They don’t have to be big to be beautiful 😉💙
At 2:35 - the unidentified fish is TRACHINOTUS OVATUS. They usually grow to about 30-50cm.
Wow. A 50cm one would be awesome fun to catch.
Hi John, that silver fish you didn’t know what it was, is a palameta in Portuguese. Great video
Thank you David.
Its a pompano (trachinotus ovatus)
The moment you hear, "The soon is just coming oop," you know it can't be anybody but the Fish Locker.
Favourite time of day. 😉🎣

We simply share what we love doing Travis. Thank you and have a great week. 👍🏻🎣
20:34 was a juveniles Trachinotus ovatus we have them in the uk
Really? I’ve never seen or heard of them being caught here?
@@TheFishLocker they are a stray species but have entered the Irish Sea seldom, there’s a lot of weird things we have over here such as in the 1950s we had a white marlin stranded on a beach near the central uk but yeah there are a summer stray the species you caught, not the same kind of pompano or pomfret you get in the USA tho
Beautiful hoping u come back to BC 1 day, tyvm John
We are all hoping to come back soon. 🎣👍🏻😊
A stunning island and another great video cheers :-)
A beautiful island.
Great location and some lovely mixed fishing always a joy watching your videos John and i love that 'Fish locker Sun hoody' it needs to be in the shop asap as one has my name on it.😊

Found it on your FB page thx John.👍
Another great video john, that small silver fish called Derbio, we caught few last week in fuerteventura.
Thanks for giving us tips and where to fish in las salinas, unfortunately fishing wasnt great there but we made up for it next day. We r looking to go back there again before end of the year. Tight lines mate 👍🎣
Any time mate. We only fished half a dozen marks and 4 of them were in videos. We can chat about it on messenger or WhatsApp about it. I’ve just been talking to Craig. I’m watching their video tomorrow morning. 👍🏻🎣
Wow! Those butterfly rays are so unique!!
Interesting looking fish aren’t they. 😊🎣
Love that top your wearing John.👍👍👍
Thanks mate. They are for sale on the Fb page.
Fantastic trip John , with some brilliant looking fish , and the buttery rays were amazing size , looked a fab time mate , appreciate yours and toms efforts 👍🏼👍🏼
Our pleasure mate. Best wishes to you bud and take care. 👍🏻🎣
Hiya John. Your vids are great! Do some reading on ocean currents before you go next time and you'll see why you didn't get too many "take home" species. Ribiera Brava isn't quite far enough west to get the main N > S swell current. Madelena Do Mar and further west are where the bigger game and hunting grounds are. Where the surf is good the fishing is good. Anywhere along the north coast which is accessible is good and there will be *SIGNIFICANTLY BIGGER* fish hunting those areas due to the stronger N > S current (which wraps around from Ponta Do Pargo alnong south coast to Madelena Do Mar) as it slams up against the big volcano in the middle of the ocean. Ponta Delgada has a few great waves to surf and several very good fishing marks all around from Ponto Da Cruz to Ribeira De Janeira. Some are accesible only in daylight and even then if you say to yourself "Yeah, I reckon I can do that...", don't do it because that doubt is there for a reason. Safety first and no rapid rescue available.
North end of Praia Calheta is on.
I always liked the look of halfway between Paul Do Mar and Jardim Do Mar when the groundswell is good (4ft+). I've surfed it but not fished it. The harbour at Paul Do Mar is 400m to the right of where the surfing wave starts so from the beach and to the harbour wall of Paul Do Mar westward there is thousands of gallons of water moving around rich in all sorts nutrients which is easily accessible. Just take care along the shoreline east of the harbour when groundswell is running as there is still elements of the groundswell breaking along that section and the closer to where the surfing wave starts, the bigger it gets where you are.
We looked at a few of those areas but the wind or the sea conditions were too extreme.
@@TheFishLocker If you can, try the last week of August to the end of September for the big Blue Marlin. Always big Red Snapper, Barracuda and White Marlin at that time too. The island is teeming with ocean-life.
You could always take a day on a boat and go get your self towed around by a big bull shark for 6 hours off of Ponta Do Partgo haha There's some big Hammerheads there too!
brilliant john another great video
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻
Definitely enough species to keep any angler happy mate really enjoyable. Great to see the leads and popups doing there bit with you 🎣
Those pop ups have done well for me all over 👍🏻🎣
That butterfly Ray was beautiful ❤
Cool markings on them and really unusual fish.
Great session John can’t beat a bit of sun on your back.
🎣🎣
Makes you feel so much happier doesn’t it
That short fishing from the boat.......looks more interest/ promising......then fishing from the coast.
It has a lot of potential.
Going overseas with fishing kit is a trouble I've found, if easier (I know not cheap) just try and take a rod and reel with you and get the rest local, they'll give you good locations and rigs/lures to try out. Always worth chatting to locals.
We try that in every location we fish in. Very rarely do they have everything you would need and specifically on Madeira in one specific tackle shop we went into I’ve never met such an unhelpful SOB anywhere in the world.
@@TheFishLocker that's unfortunate, I think I must have just been very lucky where I've fished abroad in getting good knowledge and tackle. But it's still worth a go if you can find a local willing to give out a bit of info I reckon.
A cracking video lads really enjoyed that appreciated as always 👍
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I enjoyed that. I was hoping for some big game fishing when you mentioned tuna and marlin and then when you were going on the charter I thought we were going to get it but in all honesty I found the little tiny fish you caught on the scratching rig as equally entertaining as they were all quite beautiful and new species to me. I actually may even go there on my hols this summer. We were thinking portugal or canaries but Madeira looks like best of both worlds and the scenery looks incredible.
Thanks for sharing the trip with us John. I always really enjoy tagging along. 👍
I happily recommend Madeira as a destination for people. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We lost 3 days to bad weather so would have done more boat fishing but couldn’t.
Amazing video as usual John! You inspired me to take a little trip to Fuerteventura back in January and I caught loads of those mystery silver fish on little bits of float fished squid. I believe they are Palometa Blanca (Trachinotus ovatus), a really cool looking fish. Thanks for all the really great videos, I have learned a lot of what I now know about fishing from you! If you’re ever in Ireland and fancy a session give us a shout, Jason HF 🎣 👌😁
Glad you enjoyed the video Jason and well done for the Fuerta trip. 👍🏻🎣
Great video as always
Thank you Martin.
Thank ye for the wee, vicarious holiday. Amazing range of species!
I'm so tired of these relentless winds. Working outside. Never known a winter like it. Hope it ends soon.
P.S. You had me chuckling for ages with your "Dab hand" reply and I confess I spent a fair portion of my working day coming up with the "Pollocks" response. Best to you and yours. Mark
Haha. 🤣🎣
AS always a really entertaining video. I have just one bit of advice for prospective travellers - don't put reels with line in your hand luggage. Security will confiscate them on the dubious grounds the line could be used to tie someone up. This happened to a friend of mine at Heathrow - he had to be escorted out of security, then strip and bin the line land side, then queue again to go through security a second time - nearly missed his flight.
Or just check the hand baggage into the hold?
Hi John you ok pal, well done chaps some stunning fish. All the best from GRIMSBY
Cheers bud👍🏻
Hi

That's 1 amazing 7 day fishing Adventure those Ray's were huge by the look of it they took some bringing in well done to both of you so amazing 👍🎣🐟🐟

@@TheFishLocker Yes I can imagine it was hard but really good you managed to get in some real good fishing a good few species of fish well done. I dont know anyone over there that's got a boat 👍🎣🐟🐠
Awesome again John ,what a awesome looking location, & awesome fish ,that fish looks like a dart or a swallow tail ,could b wrong. Happy catching from Australia Nick
Many people have said it’s a Pompano. 👍🏻🎣
Trachinotus ovatus. That is the name of the unknown silver fish. Cheers from Malta
Thank you very much mate. 👍🏻🎣
Another great video John. I do chuckle when you say you got out of the weather in Cornwall. It was 0 F (-18 C) here a couple nights ago. Cornwall sounds balmy. There are a lot of fishing channels. I've really come to respect you. Your knowledge and respect for the sea and it's creatures is impressive. I remember when it hit me you were the real deal, It was simple, It's when I saw you braid rope ends into loops for a buoy line. Usually I was the only person on the boat that could do it. One of my captains couldn't believe my lines could hold his boat to a mooring in a massive storm that hit, they did. Best wishes, Thomas
The old school skills are invaluable when the sh!t hits the fan. Take care brother. 😉🎣
I did the calculations and my friend (the captain) could not believe his boat wasn't going to be ripped from the mooring and end up on the rocks. I had a lot of credibility with him by then, and he had insurance, lol Miss Jasmine is still afloat. It's a 34 footer in Casco Bay. @@TheFishLocker
Butterfly rays have very unusual jaws which are highly extendable and feed by suction so probably suck the bait deep in its mouth. White skate were once common in the western English channel, but are now effectively extinct north of Portugal.
They are still caught from time to time up as far as Scotland. 👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Great to hear, but not sure how many viable populations there are (like the bottlenose skate and angel shark), but there are records, and paintings, from the 18th Century suggesting they were a major commercial fish off Cornwall.
love to go back there been 30years since i was there.
