  • This Cub Cadet LTX 1045’s Kohler Courage engine is backfiring and running terribly! The poor thing is reluctant to start and sounds awful. Our friend got it for free, though, so we’ll take it apart, figure out what’s wrong, and see what we can do to fix it on the cheap.
We post more stuff about our various endeavors all over the place!

This video is very helpful. I plan to watch the other 4 videos on this particular mower. I have the same one and a similar issue.

the courage twin cylinder didn't have half the problems that the singles did. my single broke every other week, my brother's 26 twin runs great.

Yeah the Courage twins were a stripped down Command. The Courage singles were just a whole 'nother game....and not a good one.

if the hours were any higher i would of pulled the engine after seeing that damage. but it is worth fixing since you wont need to spend money on a new head. I personally hate the courage engines. Ive had a ton come through my shop and 99 percent of the time if its more than a simple fix the customers either trade the tractor in or have me swap the motor to a briggs or a kohler command. sucks that these engines are getting so cheap.

I agree. The Courage singles, especially are crap. They cut corners for cost in the wrong places.

I am always amazed that engines with damage like that will even start and run. But sometimes they do, I guess that is how
they get even more damaged. I love the free ones, gives a guy a chance to explore cheaply. Thanks for the video.

Yeah the ability to dig into these things and not be rushed by the clock makes all the difference.
