Fun fact about Spike's accent: it's actually based on Anthony Head's (Giles) natural accent while Anthony puts on a more posh accent for Giles. And Spike was originally supposed to be Creole with a Louisiana bayou-based accent 😁

One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the greatest episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Season.
Yes, the Vampire at the Bronze was the same one who claimed to be at the crucifixion. Spike was killing 2 birds with 1 stone. 1) he was learning about how Buffy fights, so that he can find her weakness. 2) He was getting rid of a competitor for leader of the Vamp Gang.

Your reactions to Buffy are perfection! Fun fact, Seth Green and Alyson Hannigan were not only child actors, they played teenage love interests in the 1988 movie, "My Stepmother Is an Alien". They were both 14 and are just over 6 weeks apart in age with Seth being the older one.
I forget sometimes how much of a scene stealer Spike is from minute one. Love Oz's intro too. The way that he looks at Willow. So jealous!

Good catch on Drusilla leading Spike. You are the first reactors that I have watched who caught that. Pay attention and you will see that indeed she is leading Spike, not the other way around.
One reason why Dru looks scarier than other vampires is that her vampire makeup was based on a jaguar. It makes her look a lot more predatory.
It's ok not to catch every last little detail of information and lore that gets snuck into episodes, they can be pretty sneaky about it sometimes. There's plenty of stuff I'm sure most die-hard Buffy fans never caught until their second, or third, or fourth re-watch of the series.

Spike is easily the best recurring villain in the early seasons and his development is wild.
This marks the first appearance of Jonathan, the victim character. You'll figure out who he is as the show continues.

On the note of didn't they take attendance to figure out Rodney was gone, no. For some bizarre reason in the 1990s, teachers just assumed this crap by claiming we were all mature enough to make it back to the bus on time if we were over age 13 and taking attendance was "coddling." This led to me being left behind in a foreign country because I got sick at a restaurant and was in the bathroom when the class left.

Jonathan, who almost got kissed at the dance is Danny Strong who was actually in thr unaired pilot which had a different Willow. He went on to become a writer and director. He co-wrote the two Mockingjay Hunger Games films and wrote Lee Daniels' The Butler. He and Lee co-created the show Empire.

You need to also remember who Snyder was talking to. The Cheif of Police! You two have always asked about why the police are never involved with the evil things in this town. Now we know. - Drusilla is one of my favorite vamps. I can't wait for you two to learn her story. She's an interesting ride in the Buffyverse.

I have been waiting since y'all first started watching the series for the moment when you got to the first of appearance of The Big Bad, Spike. He is one of the absolute greatest characters in the Buffy Universe. Yes I love Spike. 😅

Remember that tan sports coat that Angel was wearing in Ep. 2 when he was jealous of Xander, Well Xander is wearing a button down shirt with that same color at the end of this episode (e4). Angel wasn't too far off in his Xander impersonation.
Ahhh Spike remember this character. He is definitely at the top of my favorite character especially as the season progresses.
It's SO interesting that you clocked the vibe with Drusilla being the one leading Spike RIGHT AWAY! It takes some people a looong time to figure it out 😆 If you're already this interested, just wait, you're gonna LOVE the ride!
They killed the Annoying One (yes, that's his nickname in the Buffyverse) due to the fact that Joss Whedon one day basically was like, "wait, this is a kid, how are we going to continue this storyline with an immortal kid that never ages when real children age?" And so he was killed off. I honestly never understood why this kid was so powerful in the first place, or where the story would go. Master did most of the work and lines in S1. Aside from sitting down and having a line here, or there, all he really did to help was lead Buffy down to where the Master was. He never was shown his "power", or anything really, so I never understood where they were going with him anyway. And in rewatches I can't take him even more seriously due to how easily Spike was able to kill him. I mean, you're telling me all someone had to do was go rogue and just throw him over their shoulder like an actual child and could easily overpower him this entire time?
I also wouldn’t mind a special intro with just y’all turning in your seats to face the camera. Bring it ON. ❤❤❤❤
Episode 3 is so iconic with the introduction of Spike and Drusilla. I always liked episode 4 too. It’s interesting how the mummy has the same feelings as Buffy about being chosen and sacrificing herself for the good of others. Plus, we get to meet Oz!

Hey guys. Love your reactions! Now please excuse me while I get on my soapbox - I’m an anthropologist. Some background: They based this episode loosely off of a “Momia Juanita”. She’s the mummy of a girl who was sacrificed during the Inca Empire but that’s where the similarities end. Many Mesoamerican cultures have and had a very different outlook on sacrifice than westerners do. I think I would kind of explain it as a transformation, or the act itself serving as a seed for new life. Sacrifices weren’t done like every month though, they’d usually only do it after some cataclysmic event; Famine, Earthquake, death of an Emperor, etc. Being sacrificed was seen as an honor by some, but I don’t specifically study mesoamerica so I say that hesitantly. It was believed that when the children were sacrificed they went to a better place. But they also stayed as an emissary between the people and the gods as well. I’m seeing this because I don’t know if Ampata is represented very accurately here - her mindset that is. She might not have seen the sacrifice as some horrible burden or duty. She also most likely wouldn’t have all the western ideals she has in the show. And it’s also important to note that the children were drugged for weeks before they were buried alive. She would’ve been chewing on coca leaves for weeks and then given some form of alcohol. They weren’t supposed to be conscious for it. People come down really hard on mesoamerican cultures for sacrifice, but no one ever really talks about the European ones. Rome decimated animal and people populations for all the spectacles they put on in the colosseums. They had a crazy people and animal trafficking thing going on. And whereas the Mesoamericans at least had their sacrifices based in religion, Rome killed for sport. Of course, sacrifice was still used for political purposes and whatnot in mesoamerica, but an integral component to mesoamerican religion is the idea that sacrifice keeps the world turning. The gods sacrificed themselves so humans could live, and humans have to do it to upkeep the world. Also, Willow looked so said in that Inuit Parka. 😭

Oz definitely the coolest character in The Buffyverse. Nobody does laid back like Oz, his witty one liners and observations are brilliant throughout the whole show. When he says 'you're only interested in a girl who can walk or talk' reply 'she doesn't have to talk', the look on OZ's face. Inca Mummy Girl one of the weaker episodes of S2 Xander showing his complete innocence and gullibility. We all feel for Willow who at this stage in the show is so meek and quiet, always feeling looked over. We all seem to forget what an awful bully and generally horrible vacuous person Cordelia was, totally putting down Willow at every opportunity throughout the early parts of the show, we see that again here. The metaphor of the show saying basically looks aren't everything, and be careful as things are never what they seem. Jonathan gets a lucky escape here along with Xander also. Xander comes through at the end and saves Willow's life. Great foreshadowing again here with Xander and his 'taste in women'.
2x03 The second turning point of the show. _Prophecy Girl_ being the first.
2x04 I think they tried too hard to bridge a gap between identifying The Mummy and Buffy's calling. It didn't work for me the way the episode wanted it to.
8;16 I have got to stop watching videos instead of sleeping. I had to replay that bit because I heard “I’m one step away from spilling my custard in you.” and I knew that could not be right.
That was one hot mummy. I always feel bad about how she and Xander didn't have a chance as I saw so much chemistry between them, and they look so cute together.
This episode is actually a reference to" die hard" "school hard" 😅

Angel did not make Spike. You will find out later in the series who did. Usually "sire" is used as "father" but it has a second contextual meaning, "mentor".

I look sometimes at my husband like that. But I don't think he often noticed because it's when he is doing something he loves and thus is occupied. Or it is when he is interacting with animals 😍

Spike is simultaneously one of the funniest and most enjoyable characters in this franchise while also managing to be one of the most frustrating and biggest jerks 😭🙌 don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t change a thing to do with spike but BOY the way this character can be triggering pretty consistently GETS ME HEATED 🤣
Spike is one of those rare cases when a character is beloved from the very beginning.
And Dru is very scary indeed.
The mummy episode certainly isn’t the best, but I can find some good moments in it. It's okay.
I think Willow, and Buffy were beleoved from the very beginning. I like spike but someties spike groupies say weird things.
@@Square-ow7oq I agree. I love Buffy and Willow, what I meant is that Spike was beloved even when he was just an episode villain. At that point nobody knew Spike would become such an important character.

I'm being very wishful, but i hope they do a watch along for Angel. Buffy is campy and fun, but the Angel series is where you get to see real character development, revealing back stories and heartbreaking journeys in this universe.

I met James Marsters " Spike" at a convention . Spike is my favorite and Juliet as Drusilla there my favorite horror couple. YO! And so my second favorite character makes his debut.
Spike & Dru were intended to be villains of the week and were to have died by the end of the episode (at least I believe Spike was to have been dusted) but the showrunners knew they could not just one and done those two. The rest is history.
That man really is over 40 years old but Buffy's boyfriend is over 200 years old😂😂😂
