An under appreciated aspect of the initial alley fight is that Spike set "I was at the Cruxification" vamp up to get killed by Buffy. He clearly thought Spike was going to jump in and help.

Also, when this aired, I thought Spike was really good looking... Then I found out how old James Marsters was and felt weird because I was only, like 13. Hah.

Juliet Landau who plays Drusilla does such an amazing job. She moves so ethereally, like glidding in the currents of water that only she can feel.
I was not surprised to find out that Juliet has a history of dance specifically ballet, like you say she almost glides into the scenes. Loved her and Spike's dynamic and seeing them on recent circuits for the Slayers audio the chemistry is still there. Apart from Angel up to this point none of the other vamps seemed to have a lot of substance.

To sire means to create a vampire. The "ancestors" (parent, grandparent etc.) of a vampire are called her/his sires. They have a special bond - like family.
The vampire that Spike sacrificed to Buffy at the Bronze was the same vampire that claimed to be at the Crucifixion that Spike knocked out earlier. He was getting rid of a potential rival. While getting a chance to check out the Slayers moves.

Drusilla is played by the beautiful Juliet Landau, the daughter of Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, who co-starred in Space:1999. In this she looks very much like her mother did in that series.
The annoying one actor had a growth spurt between seasons (which is why he is sitting down most of the time) and was clearly aging which an undead wouldn't so they had to introduce another 'big bad'.
Now, see, I know Martin Landau and Barbara Bain from the Mission: Impossible TV show from the 60's.

Yeah, Spike is my favorite vampire, too, he's sexy as hell and totally the kind of boy I would haves been obsessed with and eno would have completely ignored me. And Drusilla is pretty awesome too, yeah. They make season 2 so much more fun.

The authorities in Sunnydale try to keep the supernatural activities (and all the deaths from supernatural causes) in town covered up, else the citizens would panic.

I feel like this is one of the first episodes that really helps focus the series. Like here on out, have higher expectations of the kind of characters and stories we could have. There is still more growth to be had, but this a very early shift.

Yes. I believe that sums up Drusilla perfectly.
Sire, as a noun, is like...ancestor. As a verb, it's making a vampire, but as a noun it can be anyone above in the lineage. Darla was Angel's sire, because she sired him, but so was the Master because he was her sire.
BTW, it never occurred to me how much Drusilla's "everything I put in the ground withers and dies" line resonates in retrospect. I don't even know how intentional that was.

If you have watched or read vampire stories (Vampire Diaries or Vampire the Masquerade, a role-playing game) then you should know a "Sire" is the one that turned you into a vampire. Some Sires will say something like, "I made you. How could you betray me?"
You wanted a big bad. You get one 😏 Now Spike is in the show you will never stop the show 😎

I'm right there with you on your Dru crush as for Dru being scary oh you have no idea. Interesting note Juliet Landau (Dru) is a method actor and spent a month or so before filming walking around LA and going about her daily business as Drusilla I'd love to have seen the reactions from people upon meeting her.
Juliet is also the daughter of two noted actors, Barbara Bain and Martin Landau.
James is pretty method too so I guess it makes sense why they worked so well together. I had no idea she did that though, ha awesome.
James Marsters has said that he and Juliet came from a theater background. They were used to doing more rehearsals than a TV shooting schedule allows, so they got together outside work and rehearsed their scenes. That’s why their scenes together are so good
Spike has come to Sunnydale. And nothing will ever be the same again.

@@helena2037 Super crazy. I think the Texas rumor started because of the story of his audition; he had to audition trying a Texas accent and a British one, then I guess people just conflated that somehow lol.

Spike would 100% have killed Buffy if Joyce had not intervened. Buffy is lucky she has friends and family to help her out every once in a while. The Master did kill her, lucky she had Xander to save her.

For a vampire, a sire is the vampire that made them, and also the vampires that made their sire, the whole lineage by extension.

A sire, in animal kingdom is the father of the family, male ancestor or parent. When Spike called Angel his "Sire", he refered to him as the vampire who made him (it will be explained later throughout the season). Spike and Angel both come from the same lineage (the Master's one) and as the older vampire in line, Angelus used to be Spike's mentor, his "Yoda", he both feared and respected Angel in the past. But more on that in future episodes since it's getting kinda spoilery.

Iconic characters with an iconic episode. For me this was the turning point of the show, even before I knew what was coming next.
Spike explained what sire meant when he said "my Yoda." On top of meaning a vampire that creates another vampire, it also a vampire who teaches another vampire.
The "annoying" one is gone. When the series initially aired, people who didn't like Spike were brought on board when he did that. He was an instant fan favorite.
I never really understood Angel's plan with pretending to take Xander hostage. If the purpose was to get close enough to kill Spike, Xander was just a hinderance to that. Angel would have a harder time staking Spike while hanging onto Xander. Already knowing Spike, Angel didn't need Xander to see if Spike "was buying [anything about the situation] or not to get close to Spike.
A lot of people laugh at numerous lines Spike says especially between Xander and Angel running away and Spike confronting Buffy, but he was being incredibly crude with _Uncle Tom_ and _smelling Buffy's blood._
What I personally love about how the Spike/Buffy fight ends is that Buffy lost as was down for the count. There could be an argument for her not, but what would be the point of Joyce being written in at the end with the axe and Spike learning Buffy is a slayer with "family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure" if Buffy still had a chance at winning? I believe Spike would have bagged his third slayer if Joyce hadn't turned around to see if Buffy was alright.
Not sure if he really did smell Buffy's blood or if he is simply citing King Lear, Spike have a way to be a bit dramatic after all :)
@@Henrik_Holst I wouldn't doubt he could be referencing _King Lear,_ but by doing so I think he could be giving more weight to the point considering what people have assumed Shakespeare was referencing himself in that play. I personally think the reason Spike could smell her blood is because she was on her period and therefore Spike was being crude/rude/etc. about it. And I know other people have agreed, but much like Shakespeare's plays the line could be seen numerous ways, unlike calling Angel 'excessively obedient or servile' and 'betraying their culture or social allegiance' with the "Uncle Tom" derogatory reference.
@@Buffy8Fan King Lear, not Hamlet. And the "Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman" even predates that (Shakespeare reused it), most people should reference it from Jack and The Beanstalks though since the huge Troll says that quote there as well.

Spike is being crude/rude/etc. about it no matter how it is interpreted, which was my point. How and its direct meaning is up to an individual person, like most head-canon. Oddly enough the earliest written origins of "fee fi foe fum" only predates _King Lear_ by nine years as the 1596 pamphlet "Haue with You to Saffron-Walden" written by Thomas Nashe had it, and even Thomas Nashe said it was already old and obscure in origin by the time he wrote it.
Yes, Spike likely would have killed Buffy if her mother hadn't saved her. In the past, a slayer fights alone, with no help from friends or family. Buffy's life with her friends and family intermixed with her slayer duties have proven to be a big asset and have saved her life twice in just the last year.

The term 'sire' is often used when referring to horses, namely racing horses I think. A horse's sire is basically its father.
But in the buffyverse "sire" has two meaning: as a verb, "to sire someone" means you made them a vampire. And as a noun "a sire" is your vampire ancestor.
So, they both have a similar meaning, in a way. They both refer to the making of something new, a horse in my case and a vampire in yours.

We can’t prove that Angel wouldn’t have STOPPED Spike from biting at the last second. Angel I suppose could’ve found a better way to trick Spike but oh well..
@@lessismore8533 Blast from the past. Angel only used Xander as bait against his will, because the guy was still pissed off that his underage girlfriend used Xander to make him jealous. Soo....Buffy used Xander as emotional canon fodder...and Angel used Xander as literal canon fodder. If Buffy had done the sexy dance with Willow, Angel wouldn't have laid hands on her, he'd consider her a victim. But...Xander was a convenient outlet for his issues.
