This episode was really funny, especially Spike. I loved his attempt at an American accent! I’m happy that the other Riley and Buffy ended up getting together at the end because I do think Buffy liked him. It was just fear holding her back. I also understand why the other Riley would be confused about Buffy’s change of feelings toward him. Though, I do feel like he was being extra at times. Also, we know that Spike can hurt demons now! That definitely seemed to left his spirits lol

5x01 is one of my Favorite Stories/Adventures, but probably my Favorite WTF ending! 6 days and 23 hours of Gimme more!
Spike got better as the series went on, up to a point.

The best part of Spike's attempt at an American accent is that the actor IS American!
I knew James Marsters was American from the beginning, but to me it still sounds weird hearing him speaking in his normal accent outside of Buffy/Angel! (same with Wesley/Alexis Denisof)
And Juliet Landau!
For this episode he isn't even using his real American acfent. He asked his speach coach how a british person would imitate an American accent and was told to stress his R's.
"This is an apocalypse earthquake." "My roommate is evil." How many times Buffy senses something and the other scoobies don't believe her ? It happens again and again.
How many times does giles ask the others are you sure, in response to them saying help evil monster. But yes it doesn't make sense that a watcher doesn't believe or even investigate when his slayer senses something.
But she didnt.. hone.
Spike at the end is like a kid that can hear the ice cream truck coming and is trying to convince his parents to get up and chase it
Buffy is also sensing that Riley finds the idea of killing demons fun and while it is his occupation, it's not his life mission. He doesn't seem to understand the distinction as he doesn't have a destiny to be doing this. He also doesn't understand the concept of the mystical as he just sees demons as animals. Him promoting that she and he are the same, which is why he thinks they will have a successful relationship is also scaring Buffy. I actually do like his character, though, and I hope you'll enjoy his progression as the series goes on.
I mean, in a way I think his way is a bit noble. Like you said, for Buffy it's her destiny, which means she has no choice in the matter, which implies that if she did had a choice she might quit. Meanwhile he does have a choice and choose to fight.
Sorry, but I have a hard time seeing that as a bad thing. As for his lack of knowledge in the mystical aspect of it all, well, they don't have access to the Watchers, y'know?
@@ChevaliersEmeraude It's definitely noble, though more so with Xander and Willow, who choose to fight without being paid or endorsed by the government. But they both understand that it's different for Buffy, that there are mystical forces in play, and that you don't mess around with demons.
I love the way you're always so empathetic to the characters, always able to step into their shoes and see their points of view. It's refreshing to see someone who doesn't always feel the need to take sides whenever the characters on the screen are in disagreement.
I smile at every mention of “the other Riley” 🤗

This episode was ok, but even the average episodes have a lot of great things like Spike in the Hawaiian shirt. I do like that you call Riley "the other Riley"!
Before Buffy there's was only one Slayer in the entire world at a time. Even now Buffy is the only active one not all of them are in America just look at Kendra it's reasonable that the government doesn't know about the Slayer.
My favorite parts of the episode: @3:54-3:58; @5:27-5:36; @8:15-8:24; @10:43-10:55; and the ending with Spike. Such a fantastic game-changing episode for the season.
Also, Spike getting joy at making Willow and Xander feel bad, since he can't hurt them physically, and then getting super pumped when he realizes he can hurt demons trying to get them to go back out and find demons to kill, because he enjoys the violence.
Doomed was a great fun episode with the comedy between Spike and Xander hilarious. It's almost like the 'Odd Couple' the two of them in the basement is a sitcom I would pay to watch. The last part when Spike gets recognised by Riley and tries to put on an American accent was hilarious. The very end where Spike is so enthusiastic to go on a killing spree is also very darkly funny. The title seems to sum up almost every relationship in The Buffyverse! The Biley/Ruffy (whatever you want to call it) relationship was so divisive for fans. I remember at the time Marc Blucas coming in for lots of stick from Bangel fans, somewhat unfairly really.
I'm no fan if Riley or Angel. Actually they are pretty much the same to me pretty boys with no personality.
This was another fun, observant reaction! Responding to just a couple of points which stood out to me:
You weren't the only one who was reminded of Angel's "Herb Saunders (?) from Baltimore" - so were Diamond Select Toys, the manufacturer of the later waves of BtVS and Angel action figures. They actually released a two-pack of "Doomed Spike" and "Sense and Sensitivity" Angel - ! (They did give Spike the dignity of the jeans look from later in the ep, at least....)
And "But now he can't even punch a kitten!" - !! Very true, and very funny!

Bah, Percy wasn't really being that mean. His girl friend was getting very catty and insecure and he reassured her. He wouldn't have said that to willow directly, she just overheard him calming his girl down. He was genuinely happy to see Willow.
It matters how we talk about people. He could have just said she was a friend he hadn't seen since graduation.
@@CloudslnMyCoffee Sure, he could have been more thoughtful. The idea that he needs to censor himself in a private conversation with his GF is a bit much. He didn't say anything that was untrue. Willow is a nerd (bless her for that) and he has no interest in her as a woman. Percy certainly carries some douche energy around with him, but he is direct and honest in this scene. Plus he deftly steers the conversation with his GF away from another woman ... almost always a good strategy.

The girl backed him into a corner being Terriorial. It wasn't a good conversation in a Public space, but he didn't say it with Willow there, nor would the Other Woman accept him Looking around for Willow! Truth or Insult isn't an Issue, just as that Willow was an Old friend wasn't an issue. Percy was talking to a Girl(Gasp!) not Her Glory(no spoilers!), and that is all!

the problem with Spike joining the team is that while he cannot harm them through action, he could harm them through inaction. He could easily work out a deal with an enemy that they are facing and just step aside just as the team needs him to do something. He is still extremely dangerous, and as you've seen in this episode, his ability to manipulate the scoobies is very powerful.
The thing is he could still be a big bad. He just have to threaten to kill other demons if they don't kill for him.
Riley needs to get a PO box so we can send her stuff to decorate the room. I'm sure I'm not the only one on board here. ... As far as the episode? Any episode with Spike is a winner. Nothing like a vampire in a Hawaiian shirt, right? Also, James is such a great actor, and does a near-perfect English accent, that he sounds weird when he uses his actual accent.
Yea it's a bit too white. White walls, white chair, light beige carpet, white comforter and fair skinned. Kind of washes everything out.
The chair is great, the lighting is great, your eye make up is on point.

They don't believe they are fighting supernatural things. They have a scientific approach an believe that demons are just natural, rather than supernatural creatures. Dangerous and weird, but natural. They don't believe in magic. The Slayer though is completely explained as something supernatural. You can't really explain it away with science or a rational explanation without magic. "The Chosen One" that requires some kind of mystical or supernatural force or greater power. So they dismiss the tales as a myth.
Never heard of the term "rhetorical", I take it, huh?
The Watcher's Council is the one that Accepts and Understands the supernatural, and supports it in the form of The Slayer. The Initiative is a Conservative group that forms a Militia, and deals with threats by Conventional means, Recruit, Train, and Arm soldiers. Many at the time, believed Ninja were Magical and Supernatural, but still trained soldiers and Samurai, as they were "Just Legends".

Kittens aren't human, so Spike can hurt them if he wanted to, BUT HE DOESN'T WANT TO. Probably not?
when riley explained the chip, he said "hostile 17 can't harm any living creature without intense neurological pain." i think it's an open question whether kittens are protected.

That statement wouldn't apply to vampires or zombies, but the demon classification seems to extend to races that have live births or hatch from eggs. Riley didn't just say that, either, he said, "Hostile 17 can't hurt any living creature, _in any way,_ without intense neurological pain. Can't feed, _can't hardly even hit_ anymore." That's contradictory! Can he hardly even hit, or can he not hurt in any way? In that episode, he did some shoves, kicks, even hit an Initiative boy with a fire extinguisher and threw Willow at them. Also, he can hurt feelings like in this episode, that's a way.

there's a lot of ambiguous terms at play here to be sure. it's pretty fuzzy. but i'm not the one trying to definitively state what's covered; that's you. and whether you understand it or not, you're actually strengthening my argument and weakening your own.
@@TigerNightmare I think the chip is probably limited by its programming, and in their inimicable fashion, neglected to include demons in the "set of living creatures" definition. They probably also neglected to include insects, arachnids, etc - we haven't seen Spike in pain from accidentally stepping on an ant or spider - or other forms of small critters. What Riley said may be what he was told the chip would do, but what is advertised for tech doesn't always match how the tech operates, and it isn't like the Initiative leadership is in the habit of telling its agents "more than they need to know."
As for him breaking out of the Initiative, that's a known plot hole - my head canon is the chip hadn't been activated until he broke loose, somebody forgot to flip a switch or something. Apparently they hadn't tested it in the lab...

So Buffy has genuinely justifiable concerns for not wanting to date Riley...and he calls her stupid (and self-involved) for it. This wasn't a good start to a relationship, despite Buffy giving it a chance by the episode's end.
Buffy and OtherRiley airing their laundry is a good thing for both of them.
In regard to earthquakes, we have only had really minor tremors in the UK for a long time. Sometimes enough to feel, but rarely enough to do any damage.
I guess Parker was not really a relationship, but he she did sleep with him and he was just a horrible user of women, not related to the supernatural. So why she is so sure that someone who knows about it is such a bad idea I don't know. Those who know about it and those who don't, it can end badly, presumably it can also end well for both.

One thing that has always bothered me. Buffy leads a normal life by day and patrols by night. Why isn't she sleep deprived? When does she sleep?
Often in Class. Remember that she has Unnatural Stamina as The Slayer, especially through the night. She DOES sleep, important as that is where the Vision are. She likely sleeps Less than "normal", and off the 9-5 traditional hours. I sleep 6 hours, often as 4+2 depending on my commitments. In college, I knew several Party-animals that dragged in at Dawn, and slept to Noon to drag to an hour class or 2 a day.

Buffy wants a normal life. She wants her boyfriend to be a retreat from her destiny. It's kind of like marrying someone you work with. You're with them 24hrs a day and it can be a bit much. Especially when that job is life and death. Wonder Bread is also too keen on the fighting the forces of evil. Its an adventure for him. One he can leave at any time, she can't. She knows the tough choices that are always ahead and being involved makes those decisions tougher.
He is also written to be incredibly boring in comparison to both angel and spike.
