Buffy the Vampire Slayer Angel first time reacting reaction season 1 episode 9 hero
Not being overdramatic. Doyle was a great character who made a hell of an impact for only 9 episodes. This one hits hard.
Riley needs a hug. We all did the first time we saw this. Even after all these years it brings tears.
The first time you see Doyle filming the ad for Cordelia, it's innocently hilarious. Then after the episode, you never see it that way again.
I watched this when it originally aired countless times since. I cry every single time.
Takes some special work from all involved to do that.
This episode completely crushes everyone. Especially coming on the heels of “I Will Remember You.”

I've honestly been dreading getting to this episode because I didn't want to watch it again while editing lol It's too sad! I was extremely emotional after watching this episode and in denial. The denial will continue for a few more episodes lmao I did enjoy it though. I got almost everything I wanted with Cordelia and Doyle. They even kissed! Why did he have die right after they kiss?! They would have been so cute together. I'm still sad about it and I wish he was still on the show :( What do you guys think of this episode and Doyle's death?
this is one of the big episodes I wait in anticipation for reactors to get too, Such a good episode, Doyle got the redemption he wanted so bad, it was beautifully done, I still cry when I watch this one.
yeah Doyle dying was REALLY hard on me too. I loved him. And it was made even sadder knowing the actor himself passed away not long after.
OMG i so was expectin for your reaction to this one and felt so sad with you as you were "realizing" the ending. And yeah you pretty much got almost everythin you were wishing with Cordelia and Doyle. HUGs for you
I always admire the cleverness of the video camera set up. At the beginning it's a hilarious joke. Then at the end the same thing is the exact opposite. There's a healthy amount of "How'd they do that?"
"I'm developing a crush on Doyle."....me: oh no.this is gonna be bad.
Signs I know I'm old. Riley sees the scourge and thinks of Harry Potter. I see the scourge and my mind goes straight to WWII...
Yeah, that video they shot is funny exactly one time. After that, even decades later, it brings on crushing despair.
"I have TP at the ready." Oh, sweetie. You don't have enough.
I personally think that Doyle was the most attractive guy in this entire show, out of the entire run of the show. I understand why he had to be cut from the show, but it still hurts. At least they gave him a hero's send-off, guaranteeing that he will be remembered fondly. Doyle died to stop a genocide. And hey, he finally got to kiss Cordelia before he sacrificed himself to save everyone else. RIP Doyle and, sadly, RIP Glenn Quinn.
Good grief. I need a hug more from Riley's reaction that Doyle's death. ;-) Such a shame Glenn couldn't shake his demons. He'll have been gone 20 years this December and he's still making new fans cry. RIP.
I always dread this episode for reactors. Doyle was such a funny, affable character and Glenn Quinn knocked this episode out of the park. I’ve seen it so many times and I still cry every time.
Riley: I really want to see more of Cordelia and Doyle
Me, clocking the episode title: oh no. Oh noooooooooo 🙈
My condolences for your loss. The “five stages of grief” are: denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. I promise you will like the next episode.
She speedran the first four.
And at the episode after that will be the acceptance of one Mr We......
It's important to note that the five stages of grief aren't real
The stages of grief are real, but there's no particular order or timeframe, and they can come and go as they please. It's just poorly named as "stages", perhaps "spectrum of emotions" would be better
I am crying too and I’ve seen it a million times 😭
Everyone cries at the end - I've seen this episode a dozen times and more and I still get tears.
yep there's real heroes in this world.
"Angel went to help Buffy but secretly and she wasn't into that" lol understatement of the century🤣🤣💜💜
If you’ve been looking forward to a Doyle episode, well… here it is. 🥺
I'm 51 years old and have seen this dozens of times. I still shed tears every time I see it, and watching you while knowing what was coming...well, that broke my heart! I hope you got lots of hugs from someone after this!!! :)
I think you are the reactor who has taken Doyle's Death the hardest out of the reactors I have watched :( Glenn Quinn's real life situation was just so tragic someone has probably already told you but if not he sadly passed away in 2002. I love this episode alot even if it is so hard to get through Cordelia and Doyle had so much potential
I hate that news article that disparaged him afterward with supposed first hand accounts of the incident.
You are right. When you google the pictures for the keywords "Buffy episode Anne demon" and "angel episode hero demon" you find pictures to compare the demons and the have nearly no differences, looks like the make-up and props department could re-use old material.
Oh, Riley 💗💗 Poor darling. Want to give you a hug.
I've seen this episode so many times and it still makes me cry painfully. Such a loss. Real and fictional. Doyle is one of my fave Buffyverse characters and I honestly think he and Cordelia were meant to be. None of her other love interests across the two shows are aa convincing in my opinion
Yes we all cried when Doyle made that sacrifice. And I still tear up during each rewatch
We don't understand? I cry this much every time I'm watching parts of this episode! I had such a crush on Doyle since Angel 1x01
"I want more Cordelia and Doyle." - oh, sweet child...
Doyle was a 100% the star of the show. He just overshadowed every character with his charm and sense of humor. RIP Glenn.
The good fight, yeah? I get that.
You never know until you've been tested.
Too bad we'll never know. If this is a face you could learn to love.
Is that it, am I done?
-Allen Francis Doyle
♡
I really wish we had more time with Doyle. As much as I like I Will Remember You, I'm a little bitter that both Cordy and Doyle are sidelined in that episode and then this happens 😭
I cry every time I see this episode. Too bad we'll never get to see "CorDoylia"
I'm sorry sir, but it's Coyle.
Hugs! The last episode and this one are a horrible one-two punch of emotions.
It's sad that the actor was battling his real life "demon" side with his drug addiction which is why they killed his character off so he can get help. Sadly he lost the battle.
Hugs Riley!!! We all feel your tears 😢 💔
Often missed is a cameo by Sean Gun, James' brother. Sean plays Doyle's cousin in the flashback.
This episode is always the first one I think of when I think of Angel. It's the episode that shows you that this show is going to break boundaries. It's also gutwrenching every time you watch it. Much love and support to you, we've all gone through this grief and we know how it feels xxx
I'm sorry, l kinda really am, but I just LOVE to watch reactors watching this. That "I'm really scared (but still smiling)" evolving into realization...
In my defense, it's just because I can relate, from watching it for the first time myself once upon a time. :)
They crushed all of us with this one.
best reaction ever
rip glenn quinn, he had to be let go due to a SERIOUS drug problem. he OD'd a few years later in 02.
Riley's thoughts about _Doyle_ and _Cordelia,_ while being so upset, is almost identical to when _Sesskasays_ is talking about _Owen_ and _Tosh_ from _Torchwood;_ it's uncanny. lol
It is always hard when your ship barely sets sail before it sinks into the depths
Am I ready to be emotionally gut punched? Yes I am!
One of my favorite episodes of the whole series. Sad to see Doyle go down. He was a fantastic character. As I'm sure your patrons have informed you, there were many issues behind the scenes with the actor, and he ultimately succumbed to his demons, sadly. You'll always be missed, Glenn.
R.I.P. Glenn Quinn, but the only silver lining is that he left behind a beautiful legacy for a fantastic character. Doyle goes out a hero
This episode changed everything for me. I had never witnessed anything like this before.
There was a movie called "To Live and Die in LA"
Also a Tupac song...
@@havok6280 a fantastic Tupac Song... hahaha
To Shanshu in LA...
This episode will never get easier to rewatch. It was that well done.
First Soldier down😢
The Nazi analogy works well in the episode. The Nazis thought that they were the superior race based upon some arbitrary conditions, and the Scourge felt the same: we know from BTVS season 3 that all demons who walk the Earth are tainted with human blood to some degree unless they've achieved Ascension.
We also know that vampires are among the most viscious demons.
Yes, this point doesn't get talked about as much as it should.
You made me tear up 😢 be strong.
When you held up the paper I think: thats not enough! We all cry to this episode, I cry to reacts to this episode.
4:28 Love it, when she gets clever with the editing!
Oh nooo... I've only made it in a few minutes and you're just all googly eyed talking about Cordelia and Doyle... this is gonna be rough 😭😭😭😭
I've seen several reactors watch this episode, and it saddened me that they had to watch what happened to Doyle.
Your reaction had me feeling likewise.
I have to mentally prepare myself during rewatches for this episode or if I'm watching a reaction to it. It destroys me every single time.
Two heatbreakers on the bounce. Doyle became so popular with the fans this was a hammer blow, especially as Cordelia really wanted him now the writers are so cruel. Such a shame for Glen Quinn in his personal life too leading to an ultimate tragedy so sad. The episode was brilliant in its own right The Scourge obviously mirroring the Nazis with their uniforms and racial purity cult. A great but sad ending for the fans, the video so sad at the end and some foreshadowing here again too. Angel was such a brilliant show, watching it the time this episode actually went out we were in a state of pure shock and didn't believe it. Doyle always remembered. Only thing is we get a great following episode for Buffyverse Fans.
Well as you might know by now the departure of Glenn Quinn had actually real life reasons: He dealt with some serious drug abuse issues and required treatment. Unfortunately the drugs did eventually kill him and he passed away in 2002.
crying is fine we all do ^0^ plz dont worry
We're all right there with you watching this one :'(
Doyle. Our Doyle ... Sorry, brother.
I cried myself into a migraine the night this aired. Missed a night of work.
I still cry when he asks if he's done.
...and at the time, so said all of us.
me and all the doyle lovers b like yes girl we understand 😭😭
yeah, this came out of nowhere for people who weren't aware of the Doyle actors situation.
NOOO NOT THIS EPISODE ;(
13:22 damn it, that made me sad. Easy girl, things will get sadder. 🙃
Not my favourite episode but so well written. Love rewatching angel & Buffy with Riley , such a genuinely nice person
You're going to get a lot of comments about Glenn Quinn being "fired", but this is false. Joss had always meant to kill off Doyle (the way he killed off *Jesse* in S1Ep2, even though he was in the opening credits). I was writing, at the time (Joss was a competitor, of mine, when he was writing _Buffy),_ By the time he was doing _Angel_ I was on different projects and asked him. His official statement:
["That was always a plan, and clearly that character didn't mesh. He was a very popular character, but the mesh was very difficult in ways that made it hard to write. Glenn had a kind of intensity that was kind of like David [Boreanaz's], and David already has that. It could have gone a different way, but that was the plan we had and we decided to execute it. Glenn Quinn knew that it was an issue and he learned pretty early on. I said this is what we're going to do...' and I promised him a hero's exit."] ...is pretty much what he said to me.
Doyle's sole purpose was to make a connection with _Whistler,_ from _Buffy,_ so he could explain the "set-up" to the audience, if they hadn't watched _Buffy._ Beyond that they didn't forsee taking the character any further, however, Joss has stated that he was coming up with a way to bring Doyle _back,_ if they ever needed to.
Doyle made such an impact in a couple of episodes... I do wish that we would of gotten more time with him especially since last episode was all about buffy and angel.
Talk about being careful what you wish for…
MAW RILEY im sowwwy huggs ♥ i love doyal too UoU
hes fine, hes just hiding under the dumpster
Rest in peace Glenn Quinn, we hardly knew ya
You're crying for a character you've only seen in 9 eps? The power of Whedon.
Glenn Quinn. Hollywood is a dark place that requires things the general public doesn't know. Like that actor from Glee. I'm sure Joss speaks of super natural things, but many things to come, to me sounds real. Not made up
I'm Riley, and I have toilet paper.
Whedon loves to twist the knife by killing off beloved characters...
If you think this is sad, look the actor up ...
I feel you riley
Rough One
Doyle😢
Aw sweetie ❤
Tp at the ready just in case...
To give you some peace, that is all, no more of that character will be seen in any way, shape or form. That was it. He is done.
(that means that he finished his journey, he fought the good fight, and did good, that was his life, his arc, his redemtion, his journey, and that is the end. We should respect it and honor it, be sad and thankful for the time we had him.)
Thank god for the tissues. Was this spoiled on you?
No, over on Patreon we keep telling her to always have tissues.
I haven't seen Harry Potter. I don't know why not, but it never really interested me.
The first two movies are really childish, but from the third one on, they get fairly dark and the plot gets more intricate. They're pretty good.
They’re fun. I used to like the more complex, darker movies that come later in the series, but lately I’ve decided I really enjoy the simpler, more kid friendly early films. They kinda feel like old (from the 60’s & 70’s) Disney movies to me now.
0:16 she show a toilet paper. i said is not enough. let see how its end
The first time I saw this episode, it hurt. Doyle made such an impact in a very short amount of time. He was the character they ended up with when they couldn't get the actor who played Whistler back, and yet, his death had huge implications for the show and characters going forward. And yet, the first time I watched it again, expecting to experience a good but painful, classic episode, I found it mediocre even by season 1 standards, at least regarding the monster of the week plot. The character stuff and Doyle's death with that final horrible scream, that's still tops, but it's relegated to some clunky plot with Nazi demons that are incredibly uninteresting, and I don't think we ever hear about them again.
Technically a vampire should not be able to be filmed by a camera because cameras contain mirrors.
Most non-SLR cameras don't and with SLR cameras (which a video camera of that era would not have been) it would generally stop you appearing in the viewfinder (if you had no reflection) but not on film.
@@jamietaylor5570 that's not correct the technicl issues of the SLRs would make it possible
Coyle is a great ship. While it lasted. 😢
They had to fire Doyle because he was drug addict, still sad that the actor passed away after this episode.
Wait really?! I didn’t even know that 😭
@@rileylynn8408 yup Glenn Quinn passed away in 2002 of a drug over dose.
@@rileylynn8408 he died a couple years later but yeah. he had a heroin addiction if I remember correctly and it was causing problems with filming so they wrote him off. really sad. this episode makes me cry whenever i watch it.
At least they gave him a heroic ending
@@rileylynn8408 Yeah, since you're far ahead on Patreon, this won't be a spoiler. At the time they said that it was always the intention to kill Doyle off this early. But then later they said how fortunate they were to be able to get Alexis/Wesley on such short notice. Contradicting that it was planned all along. So putting 2 and 2 together and the stories that came out later about problems due to his drug use, it appears that it was NOT planned until they rushidly had to let him go, but didn't want to air his problems.
2:21 God and those who have seen this episode before!
3:25 Cordelia's got some killer calves!
13:04 Good thing you had the toilet paper ready!
16:41 The Scourge had pretty obviously Nazi uniforms, so this is about racism and all sorts of hatred of 'the other'. In Angel, in contrast to Buffy, demons are just another ethnic minority hated and shunned by society.
Glenn Quinn was struggling with substance abuse all the time he was in Angel, it affected his work so badly they had to write him out sooner than was planned (although I'm told it was always planned to get rid of him). He finally died of an overdose in 2002.
While I love the emotion of the ending, even if it is sad, I wish the episode until that point had been a little more interesting. Everything after Angel and Doyle talk until the climax where Doyle and Cordelia are interrupted is a little lackluster in comparison to said beginning and ending.
The best and worst episode of angel
The only thing that made this episode bearable to watch was that the previous episode was worse. Emotionally worse. Not a worse show. It made ya think, Doyle was the Promised One. Not Angel. It makes ya think. Good episode. A little depressing, but not as bad as the last episode. (IMO)
lol
Doyle 😭😭😭😭😭
I would have thrown Cordelia into the light, and kept Doyle. I'm still sad =(
