    We are up to Buffy 4x21 and Angel 1x19 on Patreon! www.patreon.com/user?u=46537541
    This video was supposed to go up yesterday, but RUclips blocked it (of course). Anyway, this one was so funny. I really enjoyed rewatching it while I was editing. The whole Buffy and Spike thing was hilarious! They were just being so cheesy the whole time. It was just a really good episode. It might end up being one of my favorites for the season. I had to cut out Buffy telling the other Riley that she was engaged lol but just know i loved that whole thing. What do you guys think if this one?

      I've seen it written "Season 5 is a hell of a drug".
      For me this seemed about right. Looking forward to see what you think of it.
      This one didn't do it for me as much as others seem to like it. Probably because I watched it out of sequence. There are some good funnies, but that's true of this whole era. Thanks for posting.

    I always figured the spell only worked when her emotions were heightened. At first, she was just testing the idea, but the times the spell worked, she said the words in anger or annoyance. Even with Amy, her words were said in an emotional state because she was irritated/angry with herself.
    That reason would explain why a vengeance demon would be drawn to her.
    This is always one of favorite rewatches.

    To go from a triple episode crossover event involving Buffy and Angel officially letting go of their relationship after their breakup into this episode where Buffy was spelled to want to get married was a risk, but it ended up a good idea. It is sad, though, that it had to happen due to a relationship issue with Willow and Oz.

    I've always thought it was all about the wording. Whatever she said would become true, so when she started with "I will that", all it would make true was that she wanted something. When she stopped trying to invoke the spell she started saying things more concretely. "You don't see anything" was about Giles' vision, while "I will that you don't see anything" (as if this were intentional) would have been about Willow's feelings about Giles' vision.

    Regarding your thoughts on being changed into a demon and your personality changing, especially with regards to vampires:
    I think you might want to re-watch Dopplegangland from Season 3. There is a "Well, actually ..." that Angel gets cut off from and then appears to change what he was going to say that says a lot about personality not really changing all that much when getting vamped. Which does make sense, vampires have access to all the memories and experiences, including experienced feelings that they had before being turned - all the things that contribute to how one's personality develops. The difference is the hunger, the increased strength, decreased mortality, and lack of soul, conscience, guilt and remorse - all things that will affect future decision making and thus personality development.
    Of course, considering where you actually are now in watching Buffy, Dopplegangland is actually even more prescient.

    11:50 D'Hoffryn is a pretty decent sort, for a demon. He accepts Willow's decision not to become a demon, but also gives her a way to contact him if she changes her mind.
    I have no idea how University residential halls are in America, we had individual rooms with shared kitchens and toilets/showers. We see Buffy's room mostly, first with Kathy, then with Willow, so it may well be that officially rooms are allocated only to roommates of the same gender. This does not stop students from spending time, even overnight, in other rooms if they have a physical relationship with someone else.
    While Oz's stuff was still there, Willow was still hoping he would be returning When his stuff went, it was an indication he was not intending to return, at least not any time soon.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 года назад +3

      Residential halls vary in their rules from school to school. Where I went to college, open double dorm rooms like Buffy's were only allocated to students of the same sex. What students in serious het relationships would sometimes do, therefore, was to find another couple in a similar situation, sign up to room with their same-sex counterpart, and then do an unofficial swap so they could room with their SOs.
      After the first year, though, you were permitted to live off-campus, so it was mainly only first year students who made those sorts of unofficial arrangements. A large public University like UC-Sunnydale would be unlikely to require that even first-year students live on-campus (in fact, we know they don't, since Oz lived off-campus), but apparently Buffy considered living in the dorms an important part of the experience her first year there.

    • @blacktronlego
      @blacktronlego 2 года назад

      @@elkins4406 Thanks. I don't think any Universities in the UK ^require^ you to live in University halls of residence. At the one I went to, university accommodation was guaranteed available for at least one year, but a number of halls were some way from the campus. Even the uni accommodation had single-person bedrooms.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 года назад +1

      @@blacktronlego Everywhere I've attended in the US, the demand for single-person bedrooms in the dorms has very much exceeded the supply, so only the luckiest first year students managed to snag one. (There's often a lottery system for on-campus housing, which is weighted by year, so first-year students tend to get the crummiest dorm rooms.)
      I spent a year at the University of Wales, and while the single rooms in the halls of residence were nice, the real shocker for me was the cleaning service. That's not something that universities in the US provide to students. We're responsible for bringing our own linens and cleaning up after ourselves. It was rather a culture shock, honestly. It did encourage me to keep things much tidier than I probably would have otherwise!

      @elkins4406 2 года назад

      @@jb888888888 I had the same good fortune my second year. My scheduled roommate opted not to return in the fall, and then every new roommate they assigned me only hung around for a week or so before they found accomodations elsewhere (I don't think this was because I was a terrible roommate or anything: in both cases, they really wanted to live in one of the more specialized housing options, so they each left as soon as an opening in their first choice appeared). Having a double as a single was fantastic.

      @@ghyslainabel Yes, I think that if she had just said, with a strong sense of confidence and conviction, "I don't miss Oz at all anymore!" it would have worked. She had to at least do a good job of *pretending* that she believed what she was saying to be true.
      Prefacing her statements with "It is my will that...," on the other hand, just sort of emphasized how much she didn't believe what she was saying at all. It lacked the conviction necessary to work the magic.

  • @torfinnzempel6123
    @torfinnzempel6123 Год назад

    My under standing is that Willow's spell failed the 1st attempt because she was willing something for herself, but the spell only works on others, similar to how Anya could grant wishes to others but not one for herself.
    Dehofra recruited Willow because her magic was causing great chaos in the world, and that is what he is looking for in a vengeance demon, one whose granting of vengeance will cause chaos.

  • @ML-gc9lh
    @ML-gc9lh 2 года назад +14

    Fun fact: The episode was an experiment to see how fans would react to Buffy and Spike as a couple.
    About Willow's spell not working at first, the fan theory is that for it to work it needs to be something that's already rooted in reality (Xander was already a demon magnet what with the women he attracts, Amy was a normal girl and then a rat, Giles's vision already wasn't great without his glasses, etc.). With that in mind, did you notice something interesting: Willow only said Buffy should go marry Spike, she didn't say she should love him... yet Buffy tells Riley that she does. Plus, if you look closely, after Willow breaks the spell Spike waits to see how Buffy will react to the kiss before reacting, and after that, in Giles's house, if you look closely Buffy's still wearing Spike's ring but on a different finger.

    Oh don’t worry. The drinking is never Willow’s problem. But the need to use something as a crutch to avoid her emotions and feel better is.
    And yes, pain is the key. Pain unleashes the anger within. This is the only episode written by Tracey Forbes that is actually good. Her others are tankers to me.
    If Willow was a demon - would it change her personhood? Hmm. That’s a thought. Vampire Willow is technically a demon. Well, she’s a demon that took over the human conscience. But other than that - nah. Not really. Everything about Vampire Willow was very much Willow aside from the fact she doesn’t have a soul.

    Although S4 wasn't great overall, it did contain some brilliant stand out episodes of which Something Blue was one. The comedy here is achingly funny, and this episode contains some very interesting things, you can see in S4 Willow becoming more reliant of magic each time she has a crisis, and that the potential Spuffy relationship is shown but in a comedic way. Overall a great episode to look back on.
