The reason that Spike is so successful is, because he is kind of telling the truth, with just a tiny exaggeration or a tiny little twist to stir things up. He is saying stuff that they all have been thinking about lately. Xander feeling trapped in his basement-life, Willow feeling ignored by Buffy and not taken siriously, Giles feeling useless and out of place between those teenagers. These conflicts had already been brewing the whole season and this episode is a phenomenal pay-off of that.

A well timed truthful statement applied in the wrong way has ruined marriages, partnerships, and political agreements for centuries Spike knows an outlandish lie will be viewed as false but a statement in truth designed to hurt a personal fear embellished by a plausible lie has broken has many relationships as cheating. Spike is such an interesting character. Virtually everyone loves him, even when he’s causing hurt to the other characters that we love. The scene where they’re all arguing is so well done… equal parts funny and upsetting. Spike’s manipulation only worked because there are lingering resentments and insecurities within the group that have been festering since High School graduation.

I love this episode because, to me, it hits on the climax of the theme of the season: the high school group failing to stay connected in college. That started with Buffy feeling isolated in the first episode and not being believed about her roomate to anything concerning Riley and The Initiative to Willow and Tara issues, as well feeling ignored to Xander not being a college guy issues to Giles feeling useless (as a watchers [which he got fired from] and a father figure) without a job.
Spike didn't make a mess so much as opened the groups eyes to all that they've been ignoring and were in denial about since _The Freshman._

Drunk Giles is the funniest mvp.
There's definitely more Spike shippers than haters at this point. He's always been the more cerebral of vampires, the 1st time we meet him he takes the time to study Buffy, uses his wit and charisma to survive. This episode showcases that; you don't have to be violent to inflict pain, and while Spike is lovable, he is still an evil vampire without a soul, albeit with a chip. Dude found a loophole for hurting people, fair play to him. Gotta get your rocks off somehow when you're immortal 😅

People often forget how clever and observant Spike is. He's a student of human nature and despite not having a soul, he's very intune with people's emotions, so after spending most of the season with the Scoobs he's keenly aware of their little gripes, grievances and insecurities. We've already seen him mess with people throughout the season, so I love him shown to be a master manipulator here - not so much sewing seeds of doubt, but just hitting the right triggers to bring out all of the issues that have been building within the group. I know you love Spike - we all do - but we've got to remember, as he keeps trying to remind the Scoobs - that he's evil.
I've always thought of this season as one of transition - perfectly representing the feelings of uncertainty and insecurity that come after leaving high school - and this episode is where all of those feelings come to a head.
Oh and I think I forgot to say this last time, but apparently Tara was originally only meant to be in a few episodes, helping Willow learn more about magic before moving on. But then Joss Whedon saw how much chemistry there was between Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson and started toying with the idea of making them a couple.
This was another fantastic reaction Jules and I can't wait to see what you think of the last few episodes of Season Four.

Fun reaction and I commend you for wearing your heart out there for all to see. Sharing emotional thoughts in public is not as easy to do as you make it appear.
One of the great strengths of the writing in Buffy is how they intertwine the unseen big bad of the season with the overt outward big evil/ villain. The real big bad this season is really time and what it does to friends and relationships. Buffy, the Scoobys, Angel and Giles were together… bonded by circumstances right before graduation. Think of the final few minutes of the end of Season 3. First Angel disappears into the smoke. The gang says goodbye to high school and Cordelia is soon gone. Oz is the next to leave for good but before he does there is not the reason, public school, for Xander to share days and experience with Buffy and Willow. Giles is now aimless and is not a good Hugh Hefner. And that is the point. No external bad guy, not a vampire, just the time of life moving forward. This can not be slain only traversed. At its core the show is about Buffy and her journey/ quest to become a strong, independent, and complete woman . Her story is how to conquer obstacles both internal and external in becoming a victor without having to compromise her values, integrity or moral center The 4th season is about navigating the random societal challenges placed on American youth by a system not explained or even questioned .Americans are placed into the same system/ age determined process. The children are tossed together by birth dates and then put in the same educational assembly line.Natural talents are usually stumbled upon and if not discovered, left to rot. Then at 18, they are to find the perfect next fit and determine their course for security and happiness for the next 60 years. But Buffy is different and she is The Chosen One that must do all required to fit in this world and defeat evil. Season 4 is messy and so is the first time away from home, a routine, and meeting life expectations. Spike uses the spoken word, some truth, a few half truths and false narratives to create division between Buffy and her circle of friends. And that is what happens in life at work, social groups, and neighborhoods . It is not a Big Bas with a weapon but a serpent with an evil tongue. In the Garden of Eden the devil did not appear until after Eve was created. How did the serpent separate Eve from first Adam and then Adam from Go? Not with a physical weapon but from the thoughts he placed in their minds with the spoken word.Human nature, fears of inadequacy, and loneliness by isolation is the ultimate evil this season. Buffy does not always use a stake to achieve victory . One last thing to consider is that Buffy may lose battles but she has the maturity to regroup and will always wil the war. Enjoy the next 2 very interesting episodes . Then buckle up for the incredible ride that makes up Season 5. The Buffyverse is about to kick into another world unlike any previous year.

Always felt that all spike achieved here was to speed up the conflicts already brewing - things have been going this way for a while now, simmering beneath the surface, some even longer than a season (like Willow feeling neglected by Buffy which was a thing even in s3 premiere). Spike brought them all out in the open.
We saw team bickering since s1 and its never truly resolved (because realistically it cant be) so it's not surpirising the end result here is so explosive.

Some interesting parts in this episode, highlights are Angel and Riley acting like jilted teenagers in Buffy's room, and the smug smile Angel gives Riley when she says she needs to talk to Angel alone. Also Giles being drunk and telling Buffy 'you'll get your arse kicked'. Buffy really hurts Willow and Xander when she says 'I guess that's why there is now ancient prophecy of the chosen one and her friends' after all they have done for her, and she has done for them. Some excellent work by Spike setting all the friends against each other like a modern day Iago from Othello, there was foreshadowing for this in The Earshot episode when Buffy was reading the students mind re Othello Play. Giles playing Freebird is of course the highlight.

Once again, Giles's choice of song is poignant. Although the lyrics are supposedly about being free (and its writers confirmed that's what it's about), it definitely has an air of melancholy to it. And Giles asking "if i leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" fits his mood so well. He feels so unneeded and unappreciated. The unheard following lyric "this bird you cannot change" also points to Giles's calling as a Watcher. It's who he is at a fundamental level, what he's meant to do, so not having the role of Watcher is so painful for him.

[WAVES HAND] I just figure that, like Angel, Spike's spent so much time living in the USA that his accent's drifted. That happens in real life, and to some people much more quickly than others: Gillian Anderson says her accent flips whenever she gets off the plane, on whichever side of the Atlantic, with no conscious thought required. (She *can* consciously flip it back if she chooses too, but by default it just becomes "appropriate local accent").
Once when I was young we drove down to Cornwall - where my Mum had lived for a few years as a child, during WW2 - and I noticed her accent start to change *literally in the car* as we were nearing our destination! Just seeing the familiar sights as we drove past them was bringing back memories for her, and the accent she'd picked up during those years came back with them.

Hey there, Jules!💜 Loving your colors this day. You never fail to blend so nicely with your room.
I know some keep pounding the EVIL EVIL label, but I don't really dismiss your thoughts as to Spike. He's not totally for Buffy, but he certainly is not totally against her, and I think this moment is no different. He's not afraid of her - but he leaves the Why is she still around question unanswered. His biggest thought now is the possibility of getting the chip out. And if this Initiative is so good at focusing chips on enemies, why doesn't Adam have one - to prevent exactly what he did, and is doing?
Once again, the overlooked factor here is Xander - who's the one who sparks the whole Angel thing again, with Riley. No matter who is with whom, Xander cannot stand anyone being with Buffy. He acts supportive, but always casually drives a nail or two into anyone that romances Buffy.
4:21 - Your time to Smile this chapter!🥰
Then Buffy and Riley - Xander has set the hook and we're back to high school antics again. Spike riling up Xander? All for it - karma.🤣
It somewhat takes laughs/power away from the phrase "The Yoko Factor" when it has to be explained because of the average age of the audience... 🤭
I took the Adam line to be - Well, I kill your BFFFFF and was wondering why it took you so long to come at me Bro! He's just ready to mop the floor with Riley, but he doesn't know Buffy is coming and not only Buffy, but Angry Buffy. Spike has warned him... he doesn't listen. There really is just too much testosterone going around... 🤭
It is ironic that the grownup comes to town, apologies are made, and all things forgiven, the future is back on track, for Angel and Buffy at least, but all the Sunnydale residents are still having their adolescent squabbles, insecurities, and childish misunderstandings. All of it (except for the Xander moments) caused by a few simple phrases from Spike - I mean, my god, have they never met him before now?🤣
A good setup episode. You refused to be sucked into the misdirections,😉 and look ready for the next bit of this arc.
Have a great weekend, Jules.🤗💜 I hope it's a lovely one, and I'm looking forward to something chill for your next. 😊
Here? Rain all day - today and tomorrow, then the time change nonsense, and it will suddenly be light out until about 8 p.m. and 9:30 or so, in another month and a bit. Disgusting, but, it is what it is. Have something delicious tonight!😋

      Tom 💜😸
I am still a Spike fan, despite knowing he's EVIL and BAD 🤣 I just have hope, gorram it! What is life for, if not to live in hope that everything will be okay?!
I think you're right about Xander. I like him, but I will admit it's mostly his humour and comedic factor that I enjoy the most. He's definitely settled down since Anya, but he still remains very protective of Buffy (or should that be jealous?). He hasn't seemed to dislike Riley, but maybe that's because he knows Riley would kick his butt 🤣 And Riley would probably be too unbothered to even do the kicking in the first place.
Raining there all day and tomorrow just makes me look outside at the sun with narrowed eyes. A perfect weekend for you to be cozy and warm inside! I haven't yet made my mind up about dinner, which is worrying. I refuse to get to the end of the day and go for the regular handful of things I usually go for 😅
I haven't had time to edit the chill Sunday video 😭 It's not been a great week with feeling under the weather but hopefully next week I'll be a lot better!
Enjoy the rest of your evening, dear Tom 💜 and thank you, for everything!

They use Xander shamelessly as the bearer of inadvertent disclosures of personal information, and I like Xander and wish he had more heroic moments! (Well, he's had a few, and may have a couple or two more before the series ends, but no spoilers!)
This was a critical episode to understand what is to come.
And as always, thank you once again for a wonderful reaction. My wife is away for the weekend to attend a baby shower for our daughter-in-law, and our first grandchild (HUZZAH!) but we were unable to secure a house sitter for the pets, ARG! It's okay, because we will be there together shortly after the birth next month.
First granddaughter! Sorry, I got off topic, but I am looking forward to being a grandfather!
Back to the episode - the interactions between Angel and Riley was wonderful. And Angel's parting line, "I don't like him," was humorous indeed.
Riley didn't react well, but I'll cut him a break.
And FWIW, there is actually a Fort Dix. They made puns out of it, but it exists, once as an Army Fort. But it is now a "Joint Base" of various military units due to a process called BRACC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) directives in the 1990's into the early 20-teens.

Many of the Buffy writers were fans of the Classic Doctor Who. There's a famous line from Doctor Who when two doctors cross timelines and see the others Tardis "oh you've redecorated. i don't like it!" I wonder if the line in this episode "Oh, Riley! I don't like him" was a nod to DW.

Wasn't that from the 5 Doctors when Doc 2 showed up to the future UNIT HQ so he could catch the Brig's speech? After the Brig introduced him to the current head of London UNIT, the Doc looks around the office and says "You've had the place redecorated havent you? Dont like it."

I doubt it's a reference to that. But you're right about some of the folks having "DW fan" on their resume. Indeed, several of the folks involved in setting up Buffy's first season had previously been involved in the DW TV movie. Of the two projects, if one of them had to be dead on arrival I'm glad it was the Fox/Universal version of DW rather than Buffy... Especially since we eventually got a much better revival of DW anyway!

Spike is bad sure, but he really doesn't seem AS bad as he did in the beginning of season 2. Has he like really tried to kill Buffy since then? If so he is doing an exceptionally bad job. Even now his main goal seem to get the chip out of his head than to actually kill Buffy. But of course he can't say no to a little manipulation. I love his ability to see insecurities in others to use to his own gain, he is so perceptive and seeing stuff the scoobies aren't even noticing. So yeah, he is still bad but not AS bad... (in my opinion).

My opinion is the wrong person apologized in the whole Buffy/Angel discussion, but Angel _did_ really make a mess of the apology.
Spike's manipulating of the Scoobies was pretty masterful. I've never really cared for Spike, but I will say that he has these weird, sudden moments of perfect insight. He'll suddenly be really good at reading people and seeing things that others miss (like today, or like how he knew Willow was broken up about losing Oz when Buffy and the others thought she was handling it well). He'll use that, then turn around and go right back to being an idiot. Like I said, it's weird.

Very true. Buffy's first reaction was ' ...after the things you said to me.' Again, it's all about her. Then even after Angel concedes and apologizes for his side, the best she can do is ' well, SOME of the things you said were right'. Sigh.

    • @LLLLLL-wp9bz

I actually think Angel was the best choice to make the apology. Because he was in this case the most objective person. Sometimes the person hurt the most will dig in the most. And if you love them, you will realize this and help them let go of the knife. Angel didn’t apologize because he was wrong but because he was able.
Angel was the best prepared/equipped to withstand the radiological shitstorm that was Faith. And he was therefore the best equipped to ‘rescue’ Buffy and Wesley. After Faith tore into them.

Brilliant episode, and I'm still a huge fan of Season 4 and the Adam character. Spike is amazing here, he's at his best when he's a villain, a view I very much stick with. Though points to Spike for knowing Yoko was a scapegoat!
Sadly Forrest joins the Obligatory Recurring-Person-of-Colour-who-dies group following Kendra and Mr Trick. Seriously, Buffy really needed to do better. I loved the series, but its record on race is damn poor. Add to the fact that they made Forrest the angry, reckless one... Also, now you've seen "Angel", I'd like to point out Mr Trick was HUGELY wasted, because he'd have been PERFECT on Abgel, perhaps working with Wolfram and Hart. Massive missed opportunity there.
