As Doyle said in the first episode "we've all got something to atone for".
Angel's for his crimes in the past
Cordelia's for the way she acted in school
Wesley's for failing as a watcher to Faith
    Gunn's for failing his sister
It's fitting then that their new base of operations should also have things to atone for.
Wes "This is a house of evil"
    Angel "Not anymore"

It's a beautiful moment when Judy asks to be forgiven and Angel grants it. That, not killing the demon, is why, when Wes says it's a house of evil, Angel can say "not anymore." As in the BtVS Season 2 episode I Only Have Eyes For You, it's forgiveness that lifts the curse, letting the tortured Judy die peacefully.

If you remember, the hotel was first brought back into Angel's mind in the previous episode when he temporarily brought that pregnant woman to it, thus reviving his own memory. Until then, he wasn't sure if the hotel even still existed or had been torn down.

Congrats. You've just watched one of the top-10 episodes of this series. Extremely well-researched, presented, and performed as everyone involved knocked it right out of the proverbial park.
And the end always makes me tear up. Poor Judy panicked when unjustly surrounded by an angry mob, and in her terror she made a choice that would trap her in a cycle of guilt and fear and shame for the remainder of her life...save for the last few minutes. Angel appears to her essentially like his namesake, absolves her of that guilt with his forgiveness and gentleness, and is there when she passes so that she doesn't die alone. It gets to me every single time.

A very strong episode that touches on the darker aspects of American history.
I think too many younger people have lost touch with JUST how bad things used to be within living memory.
And as always, Boreanaz can ABSOLUTELY sell Angel as COMPLETELY different characters.
Vintage-Angel was very much an antisocial, self hating monster just trying to hide away and avoid involvement. There's no softness to him even when he feels compelled to do the right thing... and he STILL has that streak of absolute coldness. Even with a soul he is capable of making the wrong choice, or allowing his pain, his trauma and his rage dictate his actions. A powerful theme sold SO well by the actor with some fairly subtle changes to his portrayal.

Great episode. The glimpses into Angel's past are always very interesting and this one was no different. Angel may have still been mostly avoiding people at this point in his life but the willingness to help was there, buried deep down, he just needed the right person to connect to. Unfortunately Judy was not that person. Just when it looked like a friendship was blossoming that darn human self-preservation kicked in and Judy threw Angel to the slaughter. I guess the next human he trusted after that was Buffy, which means he probably spent the next half a century back on his lonesome (unless I'm forgetting something). Very sad.
Like you mentioned, this episode had a touch of LA Noire about it looks-wise. I've always loved the aesthetic of that time period. It just had a classiness about it that we lost somewhere along the way. Time to bring it back I say!
The monster of the week wasn't anything special, and was defeated very easily, but the way it floated along on its tentacles looked pretty cool. And feeding on emotion rather than flesh was something different I suppose.
So it looks like the gang has a new place of business. That's a lot of rooms to keep clean though!
And yes Wesley, you are especially paranoid! 😂
Thanks for another excellent reaction Juliette, loved it as always 💜🥰

I really enjoyed this episode, Neil! There were some really funny moments in between the horrors of that hotel. The poor bellboy 🤣
It was great to see more from Angel's past. There's so much that we haven't seen and probably will never see, as there's too much history there to cover. It really shows how long he's actually been alive for, how much he's gone through and how much he's suffered. I don't envy him. It's pretty sad sometimes to see Angel's past, but it really helps us get that different perspective and understanding. I really, truly, hope that there is a happy ending for him at some point.
      NOT TOO HAPPY THOUGH.
      Thank you, Neil 🥰💜

This may be my favourite Angel Episode. It is in my top ten.
1950's McCarthy hearings April-June 1954 Angel was there in 1952.
John Kapelos is a Canadian actor who played the hotel manager.
Angel tries to do something for people in the world, for basically the first time.
It doesn't go well. At least he lives long enough to get a lot of chances to redeem himself.
Poor Wes is a little naturally paranoid.

Great episode Jules ! If you are watching X Files, you have a little easter egg. The bellman is named Frank Gillnitz , a reference when in X Files ( they used John Gillnitz ) Several writers ghost wrote an episode or helped ( John Shiban , Vince Gilligan and Frank Spotnitz. The connection in Angel is Dave Greenwalt and Tim Minear who worked in X Files; so they used that name in a character.

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been many fans rate as one of the best episodes of the series. It's is very similar in tone to the BTVS episode I Only Have Eyes For You. I think it is definitely one of the top ten episodes in the whole Buffyverse. A superb plot, this could have been a whole movie on its own. Judy's story is heart breaking, superb from Tim Minear who was involved in many of the best Angel episodes, he also wrote for the X-Files as well. We see of course the group now move into the hotel, which becomes a great base for operations. 'We're Moving In'.

A character named Judy and the scene at the Griffith Observatory are just two Easter eggs in this episode from the 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause. Angel wearing a red jacket and white scoop-neck shirt. There are probably others as well. :-) A funny coincidence: Marlon Brando did a screentest in 1947 for Rebel Without a Cause, but the project was set aside. David Boreanaz is the spittin image of Marlon Brando, and James Marsters looks just like James Dean!

Angel's state of limbo is exactly his curse. But it only works if you have a soul. If you don't, then the people around you become nothing more than docile cattle, something you feed on at will. But with a soul, you begin to recognize the value of their lives and the impact you may have on them. And that is why I think you are exactly spot on! Angel would have continued to simply exist. Perhaps even given in to his "drive" to feed on humans again, fresh, if you catch my drift...

It was very big and humble for Angel to forgive Judy after all that time. If anyone understands wanting forgiveness, it’s Angel. From his perspective, he knew how important it was to her. After all, he’s been seeking it himself for a long time, and he can’t expect to receive it, if he himself can’t forgive in return.
Angel has so much backstory that hasn’t even been explored much until now, and we’re just getting started…

My favorite AtS episode and my third favorite in The Buffyverse.
Angel being upset at thinking he looks just "north of thirty" when he was turned at twenty-six is interesting. The human who guessed wasn't too far off.
Angel drinks human blood from a bottle while having a soul in 1952. I theorize he drinks human blood from the moment he turns into a vampire until _BtVS 2x07 Lie to Me_ when Buffy gives him a look and asks him if he can deliver the hospitals blood bags (which vampires attempted to steal) safely back to the hospital. This, I believe, because in _BtVS 1x07 Angel,_ he had bagged human blood in the refrigerator when Darla opened it, and by _BtVS 3x19 The Prom,_ he was buying pig's blood from a butcher. I think Buffy, whether intentional or not, guilted him into changing his dietary habits with that look she gave him in _BtVS 2x07 Lie to Me._
Angel in the flashbacks of 1952 is a very anti-social, not-caring frame of mind, person/vampire (Angel doesn't care about the suicide and goes back to drinking his human blood). Judy changes that attitude, then betrays Angel. Thus Angel's anti-social, not-caring attitude allows for the demon to win. But could Angel have won even if he played hero? He either gives everyone to the demon (as what did happen anyway), or he says he's alive after they "hung" him and that creates paranoia to feed the demon. The demon wins either way the second Judy turns on Angel.
It's sad to think about the fact that Judy has been tortured longer than Buffy and the other Scoobies have been alive.
Considering Angel loses his soul because, as Enyos says, "One moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts and that soul is taken from him," that means happiness is just one of many ways of him forgetting his guilt and forgetting is how he loses his soul, would Angel feel guilty for what he did here as Angel (or for anything bad Angel did) or is it only the things he did as Angelus in order for his soul to be "taken from him?" I asked this in another comment once and no one replied, so I wasn't sure anyone knew, but I'm still curious what people think.

Oh wow, awesome to know how much you enjoy this one!

    • @MarkusR144
      @MarkusR144 6 месяцев назад +1

The full quote is "One moment of true happiness, of contentment, one moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him."
he mentions happiness twice (true happiness, contentment) so I'm sure that happiness is a mandatory part of it. If he was so depressed that he didn't care about anything he wouldn't lose his soul even though he wouldn't be thinking about it. If he got hit by a forgetting spell he wouldn't be "plagued" by these thoughts anymore either, but I don't think that he would lose his soul for it.
While we're on the subject of Angel's "crimes":
I always thought that Angel's fight for redemption doesn't make sense if you only know about the things Angelus did. Yeah, Angel remembers everything vividly and feels guilty that the hands that are attached to his body were used to do these horrible things and the pure pleasure that was felt while doing them. But that's not his fault, though the fact that he "gave permission" to be turned doesn't help.
The things he did after getting his soul back, that's the stuff he actually does need redemption for.
Also what he didn't do, basically a century of not caring about people, having superpowers and not using them to help people. Getting to know Buffy was a wake-up call in so many ways for him. Seeing someone risk their life, knowing that if they keep doing it they will be lucky to make it to 20, but refusing to let that stop them from helping people has gotta be tough when you spent a century "basically just chilling". He probably feels like he has to make up for all those years of doing nothing.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan 6 месяцев назад +1

@@MarkusR144 This is how I look at the whole thing:
*Enyos:* "Angel was meant to suffer. Not to live as human. One moment of true happiness, of contentment..." then he finishes by clarifying himself, saying, "...One moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him."
Nothing about the beginning of the quote changes my theory, and you're only the second person to try to say there's more to the quote. I shorten it to how I do because until someone, like you, mentions there's more to the quote, it can be a little more complex and longer to explain, unless neccassary. The complexity and length of explaining all of that in full was unneccessary to the point of the original thread's comment.

I'm glad he feels more connected now. and its cool they are going to move int here, its a neat setting. seeing judy still there was so heartbreaking. never having left that room in all those years. she lost her whole life because she turned on angel and was left with no one to free her from that demon. i don't blame angel but its still so sad. I'm glad she was able to see him and be forgiven before she passed.

It's a super interesting episode, but it is scary for multiple reasons. It also highlights the tougher times with civil rights in the USA at that time. I guess if you want to be a paranoia demon, you'd probably love the Red Scare and people frightened of nuclear war. Seems like they will be living in a hotel!

What I think is so sad is that Judy was so afraid to go to prison and she spent all her life locked up in that room. Really depressing ending...

There were good episodes in S1, but IMO this episode is where Angel starts to take off. Much like s2 of Buffy, this season is where the show really starts being what JW wanted it to be from the start...He had to do the Supernatural Police Procedural stuff to get it past the network people, but now it starts being about the characters and their arcs rather than MOTW.

I always thought Tim Minear was a very good writer. This was the episode that put him on another level. They broke the episode (created a basic outline) on Friday. He came in Monday with a finished script very similar to the shooting script. It was fantastic. This is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
Michael Stern edited this perfectly. So there was a lot of cursing coming from his office for a week or so. Just his process.
After warching an early edit of the episode, David Greenwalt's assistant Jesse Stern brought in a tape of the of the Humprey Bogart western The Oklahoma Kid (1939). When Angel is hanged, the crowd suddenly silences and walks away. The same thing happens in that film. Tim had never seen it.
Side note of almost completely unrelated trivia: Humphrey Bogart made 27 films between 1936 and 1940. 27!
The crew loved this new set as there was so much more space and no hole in the middle of the floor.
There is a fun outtake where Angel rolls across the floor, but the cable doesn't reach.
I feel like the events in this episode drove Angel from living in hotels to isolating and living on the street.
Assistant Jesse Stern woukd retire as an assistant during this seasin to concentrate on writing. He and his then girlfriend had jusy bought a house. They ebded up working on her first major film together with him have a tiny acting role as the ice skating rink ticket taker and as Story Editor. His then (now ex) girlfriend was the writer and director. The movie was Monster. It won an Oscar for Best Actress for Charlize Theron. Director Patty Jenkins is now best known for directong Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. She used to cone to the office to drop off her dog every so often. I could go on about the dog, but I've gone on long enough. Jesse was most recently a writer and producer of the recent Nancy Drew TV show.

    Hello, Jules.💜
An interesting, and well done, episode. Leaning heavily on the public paranoia of the late 1940's and early 1950's. The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was active from 1938-1975 - with smaller groups as early as 1918. It targeted anyone who was named by anyone as a possible Communist. From around 1947-1954 it concentrated on performing arts - movies, music, screenwriters, etc. Several were blacklisted - not allowed to be hired in any entertainment venture. This paranoia was in lock step with the on going prejudice against Blacks, Jews, and others. In writing, and film, stories like LA Noire were especially scrutinized - stories where common, people were preyed upon by a rich and powerful group were viewed as Communist inspired attacks on the "American Way", and all who participated were suspect. Some members of the entertainment industry, turned on writers, directors, actors etc. Their "friends" and "co-workers" to save themselves from the imagined threat - much as Judy turned on Angel. 🥰
This episode does an excellent job, of using the times, to weave together an important Angel tale, with the actual tempest of the times. The whispering demon, the growing fear of the folks, the suspicion of everyone, against their friends and acquaintances, and, in the end, those accusers trapped themselves as well.🥲
A very well written and presented episode. And You! Jumping right in and guessing the action, before it happened Some typical funny parts as well - Cordelia - "What? I can't try something?" O Pos, with Cinnamon. "and her later "They just don't photograph well!" And her quick change as to the Hotel - some "throw pillows. What's not to love?"🤣🤣🤣
    And that shot, 1:07 - 1:18 - excellent!
A good video, Jules💜😊💜and great Outro. A privilege and pleasure to watch it with you. Enjoy your Tuesday. Thank you for reacting to and posting this excellent story.
    Be Well.🤗
Made it to the eclipse - saw it, took a couple really sub par photos, had a great coffee, and back home again, in time for this. A great day!

I am so glad to hear your eclipse viewing went smoothly! I might be able to see the next one over here in a few years. Maybe it's at a decent time for me 🤣 at least your coffee wasn't sub par! But I'm sure your photos are wonderful. Like you!
This was such a great episode. Amazing transitions. Really well done. I love the while vibe with Angel. They really do seem to have so much creative freedom with Angel. It can be so dark and gritty. Just wonderful!
Enjoy the rest of your evening/day, dear Tom 💜🤗

You'll notice that Angel is staying in room 217. That's an infamous room number in Stephen King's book The Shining (also about a hotel under a supernatural influence). They changed it to 237 in the movie.
