His origins, his curse, his motives all are just to service the "forbidden love" aspect for Buffy and he's just a tool to represent whatever metaphor Joss wants him to play as a part of Buffy's journey. They never really explore him as a character until he gets his own show really.

It’s funny how people think that the older you are the less petty you are. All the vampires are petty; look how Giles is acting this episode. I’ve known plenty of elderly people acting petty.
Angel came to town got surrounded and attacked,, Riley came next and threatened him (because he was upset Buffy had sex with an ex in her past?), he fights because he’s being “protective“/territorial, and because of that Angel is a bit ramped up. He just didn’t want to leave things how they were with Buffy on his show. A simple conversation turned into a whole to-do.

I didn't see how they reacted to Buffy showing up on Angel's show to confront Faith, but fans have heavily argued about her behavior in that episode for being supposedly out-of-character. Hence, it's quite interesting that The Normies think that Angel's behavior in this episode is the one that's out-of-character.

The only reason Riley is disliked is the toxic “love” for the charming character of Angel, who could only offer Buffy a platonic, unhappy sort of relationship. Micky is right about Willow and Tara. Their relationship was heavily implied leading up to 4x19, but that last ep is when it became official. It might seem different watching the show 20 years later, but audiences back then had different sensibilities and needed things spelled out for them.

    • @ericjohnson9623
      @ericjohnson9623 11 месяцев назад +8

Yeah, because of the times, Willow and Tara's relationship progression is handled very differently to Buffy and her love interests or indeed Willow and Oz, where we know the first time they kiss, sleep together, etc. All that happens off screen during Season 4. If you go back to, I believe 4x12, two episodes after Tara had been introduced, Buffy asks Willow where she was "all night" and Willow awkwardly stammers she was studying at the library overnight. When Oz confronts Tara, suddenly wearing Willow's clothes she was wearing earlier that day and with Willow's smell "all over her," we can assume they slept together after Tara told her to do what makes her happy and before Tara went to class. There is a secret throughline and progression of a relationship (leading Willow affirming Tara is the "one she loves" last episode after a season of being secret FWBs) but it was all told in implication and suggestion until these last two eps.

    • @thomashiggins9320
      @thomashiggins9320 11 месяцев назад +7

      Nope.
Everybody who actually watched and appreciated the show understood the relationship between Willow and Tara from the beginning.
Heck, Willow's orientation was foreshadowed two seasons past, so it came as little surprise to anybody who paid attention, and that was almost the entire fan-base.
The reason Whedon had to be coy about it had nothing to do with the viewers. We were mostly all cool with it, and those who really didn't like Willow and Tara's relationship mostly just stopped watching.
No, Whedon's caution had nothing to do with the viewers. Rather, the networks feared lawsuits from the same sort of assholes who forced record companies to put warning labels about explicit lyrics and sexual content on album covers.
Back in the late '90s and early 'naughties, those same assholes were pushing hard to get warning stickers on video games and Hip-Hop albums, too.
As a result, Whedon had to deal with hidebound studio execs who freaked out that this incredibly popular show, targeted toward a youthful demographic, might openly portray the sort of relationship understood by everyone in middle school and older as just a fact of life in the really-real world.
It's not the viewers who were dumbasses. It was the damnfool censorship groups and cowardly studio execs who forced Whedon to "ease into" the portrayal of a lesbian relationship so slowly. 🙄

Spike technically didn't start any of the Scoobies issues in this episode. He just brought the issues they've been having all season to the surface.
To me, _The Yoko Factor_ is the main theme of the season. The Initiative and everything they represent was just another aspect of the differences between high school and college driving the Scoobies apart/causing them to grow apart and was never the point of the season in any way. At best, they were just around to be the an antagonist while creating the villain. They become a driving force in driving the high school part of the group apart while said group struggles through college. The Initiative isn't interesting for individual storytelling because the series was built around the mystical and the mythological. This episode was the message (of high school vs college, and keeping the group together) to all of that. Not just for the season of said theme, but for The Initiative, as well.
Of course Walsh would want her own weapons charging Adam and then lose control of him. 🙄
RIP to any chance of Foriley happening. 🤣🤣🤣
Considering the kind of character Forest was, it's hard to identify with Riley on his _my best friend is dead_ moment.
11:54-11:58 No, Pat. In-universe the year is 2000, which is when the episode was written.
I love that Buffy admits to going to LA having been a mistake. Nothing she did in the previous AtS episode backed up her reasons for saying she went down there until she admitted she had a right to vengeance. And the moment she said that, she lost rights to hate on Anya for her actions as a vengeance demon.
The Riley/Angel fight happened because the writers wanted it to. But I think Angel coming to Sunnydale emphasizes and shows the same type of problem in Buffy going to LA. They don't live in each other's lives anymore. This was the moment Buffy finally got that. So Angel being there had a purpose of Buffy closing a door on a relationship healthily.
Riley assuming Angel lost his soul after what Xander says, doesn't show he has much trust in Buffy. Buffy talking to her ex because she wanted vengeance on Faith isn't a reason for Riley to distrust her and assume she cheated. Same with Angel trying to apologize. Riley didn't know the full story. That is a true fact. But instead of talking to Buffy he used those mis-communication skills and turned his jealousy into blame by saying, "I'm so in love with you I can't think straight." That puts the blame of his issues on Buffy because he claims to love her so much. There was no actual apology. Buffy has done nothing wrong other the the same non and mis-communicating their relationship had since before it started. Nothing about any of this was forced writing. It was all the characters acting in-character, which means stupidity, with Buffy and Angel learning from it while Riley doesn't.
I love that Buffy gets the last word in the Scooby's argument. Usually with this type of fight between them they get the last word against Buffy and never apologise once they know the full story. In this case the full story is out there and Buffy just asks, "How can you possibly help?" after listening to the argument start because the last straw of all the season's issues was Buffy not thinking them going on this particular mission was a good idea.
Spidey was right about why Buffy was acting as she did with the last lines after asking how they could help. They were in her face too long. Unlike most the other Scoobies, Buffy doesn't verbally attack her friends, but she will verbally defend herself if she feels verbally attacked, and her friend have started many a verbal attack against her.

Riley is shown to have very little trust in Buffy. She tells him about Angel and what happened between them. He’s told by Xander, who is incorrect, that Angel loses his soul if he has sex, Buffy goes to L.A. to deal with Faith/interact with Angel. Angel comes to Sunnydale to see Buffy and Riley believes he doesn’t have a soul therefore thinking Buffy hooked up with him. How insecure is that?

If you look at it like Angel represents that high school first love that never works out, Riley represents that first “grown up” relationship you have after high school. It looks great when you compare it to how messy your first love/break up was but it has major issues that you just don’t see. In Riley’s case he has already shown feeling insecurity in their relationship as well as the beginnings of an inferiority complex but much like Buffy these guys don’t seem to see that yet.

Also Giles being drunk and telling Buffy 'you'll get your arse kicked'. Buffy really hurts Willow and Xander when she says 'I guess that's why there is now ancient prophecy of the chosen one and her friends' after all they have done for her, and she has done for them. Some excellent work by Spike setting all the friends against each other like a modern day Iago from Othello, there was foreshadowing for this in The Earshot episode when Buffy was reading the students mind re Othello Play. Giles playing Freebird is of course the highlight.

While Angel thinks of himself as this serious hero, he has been shown more than once to be pretty immature when it counts. Hes a goofball who got drunk and then became a vampire. Just a goofball with a lot of baggage and hero complex, but a goofball. He likes to think he's ther rational one but mote than often hes not. Remember - everything Angelus is still comes from Angel even if he represses it by having actual conscience and inhibitions (as angel episode eith happy drugs shows soul is oretty much somilar to inhibitions and losing inhibitions can make hom act exactly like Angelus). So Angel inside is just as egotistic and impulsive as Angelus. Hes jus handling it better most of the time.
The whole point of his story in buffy season three was that there's too nuch toxicity and baggage between him and Buffy for him to be his best around her.

James played a first season bad guy in it, and when the two guys eventually fought, I pretended that it was "Spike" and that other blond detective fighting to make it more fun! 👍

I think it was forced. This show never does well when outsiders force changes on it, and I have a feeling the networks forced a crossover of the main characters from each show to get more viewers to watch both. Ya, Angel seems out of character here, but I've always found Buffy's attitude over on Angel way more out of character for her. She wasn't just being petty, but she was intentionally out for blood, lying to Angel intentionally to inflict pain. I mean, when in the last few episodes has either Riley or Buffy shown any real trust in each other? This episode is as good of an example of how lacking in trust they are.
Other episodes that suffered from outside interference was the one with beer, where Buffy regresses to a cavewoman. They were forced to do an episode about how bad substance abuse was. Also, the third episode of season 3, with the boyfriend who beats his girlfriend to death, was forced to add that in to show how bad abusive relationships were.
It happens and the show suffers for it, but fortunately, the show is great despite these minor blips.

At this point in the show Buffy and Riley have only been together for a few (4-5 based on the air dates) months.. Buffy is in no way required to tell Riley ALL of her past trauma. She told him what she was comfortable telling him at this point in the relationship. Plus part of the reason she told him about her relationship with Angel was due to him calling Willow "that king of girl" for dating Oz.
Not telling him every detail of her previous relationship isn't a reason to believe she cheated on him because she saw her ex. Or to try and stop her from having a private conversation.
And him using the "you just make me so crazy" excuse reminds me to much of controlling/abusive people for me to be ok with it.
Finally, does he REALLY think Buffy would take the risk of Angel losing his soul again?? Why would she do that!?!?
