True. Older vampires tend to do that. It may seem cowardly but it’s probably a big part of how they got to be older vampires. Vampires that stick around and die lose the opportunity to become older vampires.
You skipped over one of the most interesting revelations in the episode: the school principal and the police know what's really going on and are deliberately covering it up.
Two of the greatest character entrances in tv history! Spike and Drusilla show up and steal every moment they're onscreen. I guarantee you will rewatch this episode countless times in the future. It's a comfort-food episode as well as a funny, scary, and important plot as well as two of the best scene-chomping performances by James Marsters and Juliet Landau. It never gets old!
I think one of my favorite things in Buffy reactions is seeing the reactor stunned by Drusilla immediately after being stunned by Spike. I suppose the relationship between them is really a third great thing on top of the two characters as individuals. You can read the questions on the reactor's face. Questions like... "Who ARE these people??" "How the hell did they get this way?" "What do they mean to each other? And why?"
Spike and Dru’s scenes together here are just (chefs kiss). BTW, on weekly TV series sets there is usually no time for rehearsal; the blocking and camera takes are the only run through the actors get. But James Marsters and Juliet Landau came from a theater background. Marsters said he and Juliet got together at his apartment and rehearsed their scenes before filming. This may explain why their acting is so subtle and nuanced.
@@Shadowman4710 To be fair, he wasn't given anything to work with beyond being mysterious. It's possible he'd have made a better impression with better material. ...I'm still glad they killed off the character, mind, I'm just saying I don't blame the actor.
And now you've met the best dark dynamic duo in the Buffyverse. Everyone fell in love with Spike and they are the vampiric Sid and Nancy. James Marsters came in like a breath of fresh air and stole the scene. By your giddiness I can see he made an impact on you. Fun Fact: Both actors aren't British but American. The DVD extras had little interviews about the show and characters. They interviewed him. I was shocked to find out that his accent was fake. He was absolutely convincing.
You're mentioning that Spike sounds like Giles reminds me that, according to James Marsters (who is American), he perfected Spike's British accent by listening to Anthony Stewart Head's natural speaking voice (which is actually far more British working-class than the more Oxford-educated accent he uses when playing Giles). The episode title "School Hard" is a reference to the movie "Die Hard." Compare the set-up and plot: An innocent group is trapped in a building by a violent gang, so our solitary hero(ine) proceeds to take them out.
One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the greatest episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Season.
"He's got to earn that." Most people are on board with Spike by the end of this episode, even if they dislike him. Anointed to lead Buffy to The Master, as the prophecy in S1E5 stated. The annoying One wasn't meant to do anything else.
Spike and Dru are the best! I love how much you liked Spike after only seeing his boots! I liked Season 1, but episodes like School Hard is getting into what makes this show so great! Hang in there you’re in for a ride!
I love that you caught the tampon gag - some reactors miss that and I think it's one of Xander's funniest moments. The visual of his flailing hands kills me every time.
I believe, unlike the previous one, this is an episode that makes everyone see eye to eye. My fav scene is at the end, one you edited out, with Willow and Cordelia in the closet, Cordelia praying, and Willow asking for aspirin.
Yeah, School Hard is one of those episodes you'll remember throughout the series it's so good. And Spike is my favourite vamp in the show, funny and sexy and cool and I've always had a thing for punkrock boys. So enjoy him, lots of fun.
Hey, I'm watching Buffy, too! What a coinky-dink! Leaving this comment on a reaction that's a year old because it's the latest episode I've seen. Thank you so so so so much for coming to the charity stream. It means more than the world to me. I'm only a season behind, so I look forward to catching up with you! 🖤
Great reaction and your surprise to the introduction of Spike and Drusilla reminded me of the jaw dropping moments when I first met them too in the show. More great stuff coming
For me this is really where the series starts. Reasons: 1. They have dropped all of Buffy's valley girl traits from Season 1. 2. Buffy has dealt with her PTSD from Season 1. 3. We have gotten past the gloomy 2x2 Some Assembly Required, which I did not like as much as other episodes, largely because the dead brother's head looks way too much like a baseball. 4. Spike and Dru are zesty as all hell.
The Annoying One was badly cast from the beginning and I am glad he is gone... now the Power Couple are great, and Dru is so mysterious and dangerous in her own right. It will be a great ride with these two.
The main problem they had with the Annoying One is that child actors grow, and child vampires don't. They had planned to do more with him, but the kid grew about six inches between seasons 1 and 2. That's why he was always shown sitting down, or from weird angles.
Juliet Landau (Drusilla) is the spawn of real life power couple Martin Landau (Oscar winner) and Barbara Bain, stars of the original "Mission: Impossible" and "Space: 1999".
Loved your reaction, that was so awesome!! and I love Spike and Dru, there is just something hypnotic and enticing about them...you know they are evil, but you can't get enough of them!! The actors are so amazing!!
Just this opening warmed my heart. The Rhino is my favourite animal and to hear such passion about them really made me love this episode even more and make it even more special for me. Now on to this episode. Spike and Drusilla are amazing. I love Drusilla so much. "accent like Giles" as a Brit I went "No" and then I thought of Anthony Stewart Head's real accent ( I grew up in Camden town where ASH is from) and still went "No. This is cockney." haha. You are one of my fav reactors. You just make me smile.
He's still got a bit of southern US creeping around the edges of that cockney in this episode too. (Marsters isn't himself a southerner, but he was originally going to do a Texas accent for this role, and a bit of that seems to be seeping weirdly into his London here.) His accent gets much better as he goes on, eventually becoming pretty good -- or so I am told by people in a better position to judge than I am. In this first episode, though, I agree with you that the accent is rather bizarre.
Juliet Landau is amazing as loopy vampire lady Drusilla. Her parents were also actors Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, they appeared together in the series 'Space: 1999'. Juliet looks very like her mother did at that age. 9:35 Kind of hard to start a trade union when there is only one in your job in the whole world. The problem with annoying one was a production problem. The little boy had just started his growth spurt and was getting taller, even visibly, which he wouldn't do as an undead. That is why he is so often shown sittiing and why they had to kill him off.
Imagine if a couple had 4 boys and named them Spike, Lance, Mace, and Billy Club. That would be a family to avoid at all costs. Of all the silly thoughts I had in the last week, this was one of my favorites.
I just would like for you to know, that when this popped up, the song from "Eminem" started playing... "Guess whose back? Tell a friend"... and now it will be there all day.
The biggest problem for the writers with the Annoying One was that the actor grew like a foot between seasons. It was a mistake to expect otherwise. That's why he's always shot either from above or sitting down this season and why they had to get rid of him.
@@jspettifer yeah he ultimately was, but like she was saying, they could have fixed that this season if they could have really had a story for him. But with him looking completely different, it just wasn't going to work.
RIP Annoying One. Agree they could have done so much more with him. As it was he was just introduced for a single plot point, then hung around for about 5 eps doing nothing. I was ready to stake him myself.
The tangent about Rhino's at the start of the video, was a fun but very sad tangent. Because Rhino's are cute, like have you seen their faces they're adorable.
Ah, did you miss the scene between Snyder and tthe police captain - revealing that Snyder knows exactly what attacked the school - end explaining his ludicrous hurriedly desperate 'PCP! It's a gang on PCP!" line?
"Helpless Girl" was one of the students being eaten when Spike jumped through the window. Think she is just there for a second, one of the few African American students as Sunnydale High.

Your reactions are so entertaining. There is so much more I want to say, but spoilers. All I'll say is in the future, you may want to come back and watch your reaction to this episode. :)
Darcie, do you need someone to help you edit your reactions or something? I'm assuming that's at least part of the reason why it's a month or so between your reactions on RUclips. I just saw that you recently finished season 3 on Patreon.
