Rewatching Buffy makes me realise how well-written it was. Even the recurring characters, and even some characters that only appeared once or twice, had depth to them. I mean, most of the actors nail it, but it shows they were given actual personalities in the writing as well.

I always say that "Lie To Me" is one of the most important episodes in the whole series, because it's the first episode that fully embraces moral ambiguity and impossible choices. And beyond that, it's the first that REALLY delves into the central symbolism of the show: being a Slayer as a metaphor for navigating adolescence. The journey of growing up, and figuring out how to live in the world - all while facing off against strange and scary challenges.
The way Jenny took that step back when Giles reached out to touch her, that was perfectly done. great acting by Robia LaMorte (also, how perfect is that last name for this show. Talk about nominative determinism!)
"Take Spike and go." Because the decision to stay or go is Dru's not Spikes. If you pay attention you will notice that Dru is in charge of their relationship, not Spike. Like at past scenes, and you will notice that Spike looks back to Dru before issuing orders to others.
Lie To Me is an important episode in that Angel comes clean to Buffy about his past. Buffy realising that as Angelus he tormented Drusilla and turned her. We saw in School Hard Spike having his history with Angel/Angelus too. The writers do a great job gradually showing how Angel, Spike, Drusilla ( and others can't say cos of spoilers ) have this shared history a theme throughout the show. Ford is of course dying of cancer, and as with many people in this situation would do anything to be rid of the disease. Buffy tells him, he has a choice, not a good one, but a choice to do the right thing. You can now seeing how this show is really showing how deep and meaningful it is, you can see the layers of the plotlines being put down for the future episodes.
The theme of choice is seen all over the Buffyverse. The line they didn't show in the reaction was Buffy saying "You didn't have a good choice but you have a choice"
Lie to Me is one of the most important episodes thematically in the buffyverse. "You have a choice. You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice!"
I think its pretty important what Buffy explains to Ford in « Lie to me » : she says that when you become a vampire you die and your soul leaves your body ( your soul = you: the Human in you). Then a demon takes your body - and it walks/talks and has all your memories but it’s not YOU- you’re just Gone. All that’s left is the evil. And that’s what Angelus was . But when the gypsies restored his soul, the MAN was back in his old body and could remember everything the demon did and feel guilty about it -- but in reality none of it was his fault because he was not there when it happened ( him meaning his soul)…
That tattoo was the first one I got when I turned 18 actually. Brought in a DVD and played Giles rolling up his sleeve for the artist to draw it on me :P

The Great SMG said in an interview before that Buffy season 1 aired while filming IKWYDLS. She had no clue how it was doing other than phone calls with her team bc she was filming in NC and the town she was in didn’t get the WB. It wasn’t until filming Scream 2 and going to the mall (or something like that) in Atlanta and hearing people whisper “that’s Buffy!” That she knew it was a hit
Ooh! Two really great episodes. In the first one, Ford is played by Jason Behr. I had such a huge crush on him back in the day. After this guest appearance he went on to guest star in a couple of episodes of Dawn’s Creek before finally getting the lead role as Max in Roswell. Watching you guys watch this is bringing back so many memories. And I really need to find time binge both Buffy and Roswell now 😊😊
"You do have a choice. Not a good one, but you do have a choice." The parallel between Buffy in Prophecy Girl and Ford in Lie to Me. We see the contrast between Buffy who had a choice, save herself, and let all her friends die, or die to save all her friends. And Ford who also had a choice, to let himself die, or let everyone else die to save himself. He chose to let everyone he know die to save himself, while Buffy chose to die to save everyone else. That is why Buffy is a hero. She knows her fate, and she has accepted it because she accepts that others do not deserve to die. While Ford is a villain because he chose to sacrifice others to save his own life.

Two excellent reviews and more great reactions. You have noticed the improvement in the fight scenes, that’s because the show is getting more budget and backing The poverty level budgets are giving way and the money will be put in screen. Your exactly correct in the way the show is having more teamwork and exploration of the characters. Bittersweet is a good word to use but it is also due to the fact that BTVS is evolving from Monster of the week to stories about decisions, choices, moral values, and the impact on the person and those around them. We all have choices. Unlike other shows , doing whatever is right does not get you what you want or redemption. The boy wanted immortality. Spike honored his deal and made him a vampire. She is not a killer but The Slayer and the justice for an evil demon is a lasting death/ removal from this world. Buffy has a choice. She could let her friend Ford rise but her choice is to slay him and protect innocent people. One way to understand the excellent writing of BTVS is to try to answer what the title is about, Lie To Me. Is that a negative, positive, wishful, or regrettable comment? I think this was of the pretty average episodes of S2, but it is interesting that we gradually getting to see that Giles is much more than he seems. Jenny of course is gradually being brought in more in S2 to enhance the storylines. The Xander/Cordelia constant bickering at this point is driving Willow mad, and she unloads in the library. We have the interminable, yes interminable Ethan Rayne back again, one of the nastiest characters in the show, a thorn in The Scoobies side throughout. Funny scene when Xander is asked 'did you find anything' and he produces a pic from the 70s of Giles playing bass in a rock band. Better to come in S2, but not a bad episode overall. We can see how much you guys are really enjoying the show now, it just engrosses all that come across it, mainly due to such brilliant characters everyone can empathise with.
So I have watched Buffy a lot, like a lot, both on my own and reactions and I have never once thought about this before.... why is she on a roof when she happens upon seeing Angel and Drusilla talking? We know she patrols but usually they just show her going about graveyards and backalleys and stuff, is she getting up on the roofs downtown as well?
In Lie To Me, one thing I liked is that both Buffy and Spike kept their word. Buffy basically promised to let Drusilla go if Spike let the wannabes go, he let them go so she let Dru go. The good guys should keep their word, it is part of what makes them the good guys. Meanwhile Spike promised to turn Ford if Ford delivered the Slayer to him - Ford did that, so Spike turned him. But...Ford didn't bargain for Spike to keep his body safe until he rose as a vampire - that was his mistake - so Spike honored the letter of the agreement but not the spirit, leaving the body there, for whatever happened after that wasn't his concern. In S2E8, the one quibble I have is Buffy walking ahead of the obviously untrustworthy Ethan rather than insisting he walk ahead of her. The plot needed her to get knocked out, and the only way that happens is if Ethan catches her by surprise. It is just a bit weak to me.
Angel just sort of smiles and nods at Buffy's question about delivering the blood to the hospital. Like maybe some of it, he will, but he never said "yes." It wasn't a coincidence that Angel showed up to blood bag day. He's got to get his supply somewhere.
That's not quite how I took it - to me, he looks guilty, like he was going to sample the product but Buffy directly asking him not to shamed him out of it.
@@Talisguy I mean, Buffy didn't invite him there. He went there on his own not expecting to see Buffy there. He was going to make his purchase, but couldn't once he saw Buffy there. I am not saying he won't take all the blood to the hospital. But who's going to misa bag or 2?
No, I know he was there to take hospital blood. "Everyone knows about delivery day." I just mean I think all the blood made it to the hospital after Buffy told him to make sure that happened.
Rewatching as an adult made me realize how awful Giles is at combat. He's supposed to be badass (Ripper) and specifically a slayer trainer but constantly gets KOd with the first hit.
Either the make-up on Amgel and Willow was bad or the lighting was completely different than expected as they both were clearly wearing lipstick, with Willow's being very dark.
Ooof (all completely imo, but. ...) as fairly heavily tattooed person, poor any Buffy fan that got that tat in the 90s. Lol. It probably held really well and it is ugly AF. 😂 tbf that super thick black work was a staple of late 90s tattooing, whether it was knockoff tribal or Celtic knots or barbed wire or whatever. All that same same fat flat black, and the Buffy demon tattoo is NOT a great design even for a period of not great designs.

No, I know he was there to take hospital blood. "Everyone knows about delivery day." I just mean I think all the blood made it to the hospital after Buffy told him to make sure that happened.
I love everybody, but Buffy and Willow are definitely my top fav characters.
I now want to watch Blade again lol.
I'm with Cody, I need to know, hate surprises & not good with change...
Rewatching as an adult made me realize how awful Giles is at combat. He's supposed to be badass (Ripper) and specifically a slayer trainer but constantly gets KOd with the first hit.
Either the make-up on Amgel and Willow was bad or the lighting was completely different than expected as they both were clearly wearing lipstick, with Willow's being very dark.
i love learning the backstory on giles. but he 100% should have paid for buffys tattoo removal. talk about something being his fault.
Cody has the same water bottle as me! Is it 40oz too?
React to The Poughkeepsie Tapes pleaseeeee
FUN FACT: Jenny Calendar was 'Pearl' of 'Diamond and Pearl'
I hope you’re not speaking of Prince’s muses “Diamond and Pearl” because they are Lori Elle and Robin Laporte Scott.
WE'RE NOT EVEN GAAAY🌈
Guys all I'll say is, this season gets dark and HEARTBREAKING. Be prepared!
🎬❤
Ooof (all completely imo, but.
...) as fairly heavily tattooed person, poor any Buffy fan that got that tat in the 90s. Lol. It probably held really well and it is ugly AF. 😂 tbf that super thick black work was a staple of late 90s tattooing, whether it was knockoff tribal or Celtic knots or barbed wire or whatever. All that same same fat flat black, and the Buffy demon tattoo is NOT a great design even for a period of not great designs.
