there's old witch folklore that states that boiling the flesh of children grants witches the power of flight. the twins are missing at the end but the coven of witches are dancing around a boiling cauldron, and then start to fly. soooooooo uh yeah. them kids got cooked.
Seems a waste of good resources, I always thought the pagans were practical by nature, they don't worship for the sake of glory in this life or the next. What's the power of flight going to do for them? they are not actually travelling anywhere, so casting the spell is like a psychotropic drug, for the rush.
@@w415800 The director set out to make a film that portrayed witches based on puritan beliefs at that time. These weren't pagans to the puritans these were brides of Satan.
The folklore you are talking about is Witches making flying ointment from the flesh of children specifically. They’d put the flying ointment all over themselves which is how they’d fly. The point of the broom stick was to be comfortable in the air. The brooms weren’t what granted them flight.
That "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" line has lived in my head rent free ever since I first saw this film years ago. Modern culture kind of whitewashed how insanely creepy the concept of witches must have been to people back in those times, and this movie PERFECTLY revives that old sense of dread we lost a while ago when it comes to witches.
This movie flawlessly captured what must have been like to be a puritan back then. They leave England for the United States and find it to be a land completely wild and full of unknowns, and with religion making them believe that the Devil and evil is in every corner and capable of corrupting everything, even you and your loved ones, they must've gone through a lot of hardships. Eggers says he's embarrassed by The Witch nowadays, but it'll forever be my favourite movie of his!
Yeah that line made me feel...different kinds of things than what was intended. It's just dripping with sensuousness and debauchery and I am here for it.
@@eva11883 It is ICONIC for that very reason. Satan shouldn't sound like a snarling demon creature, he needs to have that allure. That seduction. This movie nailed it.
This is one of my favorite movies ever made. If the people from this time period could make a horror movie, this is what they would have made. If you showed this to them, it would've scared them to death because it's exactly what they feared.
I also appreciate the fact that the supernatural elements are firmly placed in the movie. A lot of people argue that the movie should have left room for ambiguity to consider that this is caused solely by the family tearing themselves apart. But the truth is that people back then really believed in this stuff, and in order for a modern audience to believe it, and fear it, you have to show them that it's true, not just tell them.
The best part about Robert Eggers' movies (besides the phenomenal acting and directing) is his use of dialects. For this movie and The Lighthouse he did research (by reading diaries, journals, and reports) on how people spoke during those time periods. It gives his films a legitimacy that few other films capture.
This is one of my favorite movies. A neglected young women overcomes the hardship of her neglectful family & discovers found family. So heartwarming & inspiring. A holiday classic.
I've seen this movie so many times and this is the first time I noticed specifically that Caleb chokes up an apple after talking with Thomasin about how neither of them have seen one in a long time (I think it was more noticeable in this video because the moments were edited to be close together). I also love the conversation the father has with Caleb about the corn going bad (not in this video)- ergot is the fungus that grows on corn- implying that they might be ingesting ergot, which causes hallucinations and seizures. How much of their experiences were real (because a witch has been hexing them) and how much is hallucinogens, exacerbated by religious hysteria? I love this movie so much because I always find something new to contemplate. Watching along with you was wonderful!
I definately recommend the writer/director's follow up The Lighthouse. It's even more of a psychological/lovecraftian horror but its also intentionally hilarious. It's is another movie that requires subtitles since the characters speak in sailor talk as well as knowledge on Greek mythology

Kody, you have some really interesting takes on this movie. They make a lot of sense and gave me other things to think about that I hadn't considered before.
Actually, when Caleb was in the woods and mentions he hasn’t been baptized so he will automatically go to hell if he died right then, it’s a very telling piece of info. It stands to reason that this was due to the father breaking with the formal church’s beliefs and traditions, which eventually leads to them being banished from the village into the wilderness. Now, we can assume if that started with (at the very least) Caleb, the twins and the baby were also not baptized. Bare with me, I’m getting there 😂 We can also assume the witches are always watching and listening, and possibly possess psychic or scrying abilities too. They may see and hear through the rabbit & crow (and possibly even black Phillip) familiars as well. They most certainly hear Thomason when she jokingly proclaims she’s a witch. They hear Caleb in the woods when he says he’s not baptized and see him lusting on his sister (🤮). They hear them talk of their hunger. They hear the mother say she’s lost her faith. They hear them talk of apples. Etc. which of course all comes into play eventually. According to traditional pagan witchcraft (and in that great old movie Warlock with Julian Sands RIP), the boiled fat of an UNBAPTIZED child can give the witch and her broom the ability to fly, when the spelled and cooked substance is rubbed on the witches bare skin and broom. Which is what we see her do. Both Thomason and Caleb were too old to be boiled. Because the possibility of making flight jelly (I don’t know what else to call it 😂) leaves when a boy hits puberty and a girl starts their period etc. By spying and acquiring info, the witch gathered that it was highly likely the baby and the twins were unbaptized. THIS is why she stole the baby initially. The twins were tied up and watched constantly so they couldn’t get to them right away. But Caleb came into the woods. That’s when the witch of the wood used spell craft to lure him in with seductions. I see his vomiting of an apple as a cruel joke to the father who had lied about apple orchards….but also a secret message to Thomason that they’re listening, as it was she that said she’d not seen an apple since they’d left England. Given that the witch and the coven had been spying, listening and gathering info on the family all along, the witch was able to assess what each of their weaknesses were. And she used them to her advantage. However, when Thomason goes to join the coven, there are a multitude of witches there, starting to fly….because Jonas and Mercy were the suppliers of the flying jelly boiling in that cauldron, and applied on their skin. 😩 So Thomason rubbed brother sister jelly on her bare skin and started to fly. 🥴 Also, not sure if you guys caught this or not, but it’s worth noting: had Thomason not killed her mother, they BOTH would have been witches in the coven. As it’s alluded to that the mom also signed the book. Finally, Black Phillip killed the father because simply put, he was of no use to them; nor could he join the all female coven.🤷🏼♀️ That’s just some more lore explanation that adds a little something extra. Ok, loved your reactions, thanks so much for doing this film! Think I’m gonna go watch Warlock now. 🤔🖤🐰😂
The boiling of fat of the child for flight comes from extreme perspectives on the making of “flying ointment”, a salve made by European witches often from hog’s fat and nightshades. The flying ointment would be applied to the head of a broom under ritualistic conditions and then used by witches that would “ride” it in flight. Datura is considered one of the most popular nightshades for this salve (and is quite toxic). So thrilled to see you react to The VVitch! This movie was one of my earlier horror experiences and I only dove deeper into the genre after. And now that you've seen this one, I really hope you watch Eggers's other movies! The Lighthouse (2019) is my favorite
This is one of my fav movies!!! So glad to see you guys react! 💜❤😁🫶 ⚠⚠‼(SPOILER): The 2 kids were taken by the Witch and it's actually their bodies burning in the bonfire at the end when all the witches are floating. Children's blood helps them fly in the old lore. That's why we see her flying earlier after what she did with the baby and that's why she rubbed it on her broom and herself.
The story is open to be interpreted either literally by the folklore, or more psychologically, that the things they are seeing express anxieties, especially for children on the edge, or over the edge, of adolescence. The two older children are in the age cohort of the girls in Salem who has fits and accused people of bewitching them. The New Englanders believed that the land in America they were moving into was all Satan's territory, so perhaps the parents' warning about the woods reflects this point of view. 'Familiar spirits' are demons, which can take the form of animals, that the devil sends to accompany witches in their enterprises. The Providence author HP Lovecraft, who was steeped in New England lore, refers to an entity called the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. I think he might well have been inspired by lore surrounding the Devil appearing in the form of a goat to lead the witches' Sabbat.
this is one of my favorite movies everrrrrrrr, not just from the horror genre. yalls reaction is prolly my favorite i've seen for this movie. much love! xoxo
Hey guys, another great reaction.😊 Although THE VVITCH gave me that eerie & slightly uncomfortable feeling when I 1st watched it, I really liked it. I liked it enough to suggest it to a friend, &then watched it w/her for my 2nd viewing.😊 My friend commented on whether/not the family members were dispatched because of committing 1 of the 7 Deadly Sins. The father's sin was Pride which he admits to. The mother's sin was Wrath mostly directed @ Thomasin, but also @ the father. Caleb's was Lust. The twins were guilty of Sloth by not doing their chores & playing all day. Causing Thomasin to pick up the slack. The only innocent ones were the baby & Thomasin. The baby was sacrificed because it was believed that the murder of innocence & if the baby was not yet baptized that it would enhance the witch's power by giving it over to the Devil.. I don't think the baby was baptized because the mother complained that her babe was in Hell. In the end, the witch & the Devil succeeded in corrupting Thomasin's innocence. Having murdered her mother & having no family left, she decided to go the way of the witch in order to live. @ least, that's the way my friend & I saw it. The acting in this movie was stellar. U all watched GAME OF THRONES, right? The actors that played the mother & father are both from GoT. Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say.😊👍
My parents went to see this movie opening night and will continuously say that they do not like this movie. After it ended, everyone in the theater looked around dumbfounded. My folks said that one guy even said do you think we can get our money back because they all hated this movie. I’ve never watched it myself before this reaction and I was so interested to see what you guys thought about it all.

I love the themes of this film, and the way it captures all the best part of true folk horror - the fight between nature's wildness and the inherant magick of the world, vs. man-made evils and technology. it's so so good!
The mother was also lady of the vale I. GoT
Seated and watching!🔥 love you guys🤍
So thrilled to see you react to The VVitch! This movie was one of my earlier horror experiences and I only dove deeper into the genre after. And now that you've seen this one, I really hope you watch Eggers's other movies! The Lighthouse (2019) is my favorite
Segio: hey pal are you the devil. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
This is my favourite movie. So good to see you both cover it!
Black Phillips ASMR 😂
"Wouldst thou like to live deliciously"
I literally shat myself 😧🤣🤣
This is one of my fav movies!!! So glad to see you guys react! 💜❤😁🫶
⚠⚠‼(SPOILER): The 2 kids were taken by the Witch and it's actually their bodies burning in the bonfire at the end when all the witches are floating. Children's blood helps them fly in the old lore. That's why we see her flying earlier after what she did with the baby and that's why she rubbed it on her broom and herself.
I assumed the Apple thing was the witches way of offering herself to the daughter, 33:50
Ayyyy the VVitch
5:28 It's the body fat, the specific part of the victim they need in this folklore
Love Robert Eggers movies and his brand of horror. Can't wait for Nosferatu!
HOW DOES YALL"S HORROR HAND JUMP SCARE ME EVERYTIME EVEN AFTER A YEAR LOL
Creepiest sound was when the witch is mashing up the baby 😖 UGH makes me get goosebumps!
Love you guys! Awesome reaction!❤
It took me a long time to appreciate this movie.
5:11 🎙️I want my baby back baby back baby back.
Give me my baby back please 🎙️
You guys will be happy to know that Ralph Ineson is going to be the voice of Galactus in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
The father and mother are both from game of thrones.
If ur wondering where the twins are, there is an old folklore that says that witches burn children as offerings for the devil
this is one of my favorite movies everrrrrrrr, not just from the horror genre. yalls reaction is prolly my favorite i've seen for this movie. much love!
Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say.😊👍
finally!!!!! 🧡
Cody was LOCKED IN, he looks entranced by the movie
I didn't know Cody had long hair!!! I’ve never seen it before, my god it suits you so much! ❤️ use it more like this, it's completely wonderful 😻
My next tattoo is going to be Black Phillip standing up. ♥️
I would love for y’all to watch and react to the tv series Salem from 2014
Cody omg, THAT. HAIR!
Damn I do love butter
Anyone looking for a book that's has this movies energy, check out Slewfoot.
The score of this film sent me over the edge 🫣 it so unnerving from the start. Robert Eggars is a visionary can't wait for Nosferatu later this year
yesss
loved this react!
I know I'm not a patron or anything but.. I highly recommend The Borderlands/Final Prayer if yall haven't seen it already
The father was in The first omen 2024 as the Priest
Interview with the vampire series...what r u 2 waiting for?????????????????????????????? Let's goooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
have you guys seen Mother (2017)? 👀
Oh oh oh! This reminded Me, you should react to “Gretel and Hansel”! I actually really liked the direction it took and the visuals. Sophia Lillie and Alice Krige eat up their parts.
I also recommend watching czsworld's breakdown of the witch in this movie
happy birthday!
I watched this movie in theaters and I wasn’t impressed but I watched your video to see if it would provoke me to watch it since it has been so long
I'm so glad you enjoyed this, it's one of my favourite films. I know the dialogue puts people off, but the way it adds to the whole time period/setting etc really makes the film. It would be a lesser film without it.
Fan of your video Reactions! You should see Oculus (2013)
You guys should watch the horror/psychological thriller, “The Lazarus Effect”…its a goody
The witches use baby fat to make flying potion. I'm telling you because not many people that saw this film understood that.
Can I recommend Gretel and Hansel, a wich movie as well? It's slow but amazing
