I love how we get the three levels of a 'dangerous' man. We get the first, who is nice but also condescending and doesn't believe what you say. Then the second that isn't necessarily violent but will still disregard your 'no'. And then we get the monster, who is violent and revels in that violence.
I also found it interesting that the guy who tries to stop her going back inside (the most genuine of the men) is screaming in a very scary/off putting manner, calling her little girl. Like obviously he’s trying to help but his manner is terrifying. Even when men try to help they often do so in a pretty aggressive/condescending way which scares or threatens the very person they’re trying to help.
I wouldn't say Keith is condescending. Nor would I say he does believe what you say. Its more accurate to say he's so focused on being a traditional gentleman that he ends up ignoring a woman's desires/requests.
I wasn't expecting to feel as much sympathy as I do for Mama Monster in this. She is driven by pure instinct because its all she knows. She was born a monster due to circumstances beyond her control.
To be fair to the homeless guy's claim that she had never broken into his home, he was never a threat before. Now momma had to "Kool-aid man it" because the guy appeared to have taken her babies and was sitting there with them.
This movie could really have been three separate movies and I would have watched each one of them. Like, one would be Tess and Keith in the house; another would just be Justin Long being an a-hole to literally everyone and justifying it in his head. And a movie about that Frank guy and what he did to those women would be fucked up as hell. that's some Poughkeepsie Tapes kinda shit.
My theory is Justin Longs character got the house for stupid cheap since the neighborhood is garbage. But his character being such an oblivious asshole. He probably had no idea the condition of the neighborhood. And just had it fixed up and put on air b and b for a supplemental income. Not knowing there is a demon mom in the basement.
Interesting observation. You could also say that the dilapidated nature of the neighborhood was a metaphorical reflection of his character; it was rotten to the very core...
The fact that the killer in the flashback (a white man) went to the woman’s house and later talked to his neighbor while his jumpsuit said “Carlos” on it and no one said anything 😂 That’s one detail that goes unnoticed haha.
We love a happy gay couple that watches horror movies together ❤ every guy I’ve dated has not been a big fan of horror and it’s so shitty every time I find that out 😂
34:34 I remember hearing from somewhere that for this scene, they were originally going to have the monster chew up food and project it into his mouth, like a mama bird feeding her babies. the directors thought that choice would've been too gruesome and disgusting, so they went with the monster breast feeding instead.
AJ owns the house. Usually when you live out of town and lease it out you do so through a property manager. They usually manage many properties and that experience he had is pretty likely fyi. The title ‘Barbarian’ is so good btw. It’s about the barbarian-like men we see, AJ and the father. AJ looks at the old man with judgment with the tv screen reflecting his own image, not realizing he’s not a whole lot different. And poor Keith and the homeless guy - the unanticipated nice guys 😢. And then Tess and the Mother monster both putting themselves in danger for others. There was a lot of social commentary in this insanity.
The title has so many layers, not only about animosity and that the mother is a "barbarian" as someon born on barbary lane, but also that the word itself comes from what the greeks called foreigners who talked a different language, describing it as them speaking "Ba ba" as if they are speaking gibberish. And that goes into the last lines of the movies as the mother tries to say "baby"
This movie brought up an interesting question. Who was the Barbarian? The man? His spawn? Justin Long? The answer is: YES. Also kinda cool that the street is called Barbary...
