A bomb was dropped on Redcliff Tunnel

  • The Redcliffe tunnel portal and the railway cutting to the right of the Ostrich Inn are important legacies of Bristol’s industrial past. The double track of mixed broad and standard gauge railway line from docks to Temple Meads was carried by a bascule bridge close to the Ostrich, a bridge that was actually wider than it was long and operated by a stationary steam engine. When the line closed in 1964, this engine was removed to the Industrial Museum (now M Shed). The steam engine had a secondary function, which was to assist manoeuvring large boats using the Basin both through the lock past the open bascule bridge and alongside the working quays. This was done by ropes threaded round the wheels that are still located on the quay edge by Lower Guinea street.
The railway cutting and tunnel were the work of Charles Richardson, an engineer who shaped the railways of the South West for Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Richardson was the instigator and chief engineer for the Severn Tunnel, which was an enormous feat of engineering, and the world’s longest underwater tunnel for over 100 years. Incidentally, Richardson also invented the modern-day cricket bat in the 1880s, and Brunel expressed his displeasure at Richardson sometimes becoming distracted by his interest in cricket.

Hi Mathew I’ve walked through that tunnel about 50 years ago as a child and there is deff a tunnel we were adventurous in those days and we only had a crap torch if I remember correctly it was from one of those man holes on the side and we found catacombs which obviously belonged to the church maybe the man hole has been bricked up we got scared when we found those coffins and scarpered I went with cousin who lived in bedminster who is no longer alive and my brother who is still alive but don’t speak with him he lives in Bristol but 100 per cent there was a tunnel adjoining that railway tunnel If I remember the tracks were still down when we walked it many years ago do remember it though was amazed to watch your video

During the Bristol Blitz in the Second World War a bomb exploded in a nearby street, throwing a rail from the tramway over the houses and into the churchyard of St Mary Redcliffe, where it became embedded in the ground. The rail is left there as a monument. The inscription reads: "On Good Friday 11th April 1941 this tramline was thrown over the adjoining houses by a high explosive bomb which fell on Redcliffe Hill. It is left to remind us how narrowly the church escaped desctruction in the war 1939-1945.

Those 'Alcoves" are called "Refuges" designed for the railway workers to stand in a "Position of safety" when a train passes or used to pass in this case, and it also looks to have been designed wide enough for Brunel's broad guage perhaps ?

Years ago, I used to work in an office block at 60 Redcliff Street. There were definitely tunnels under that building, rumoured to go to Castle Park. That building is now an apartment block called The Atrium and I think worth exploring.

Been past this many times, even have some photos from a book about Bristols industrial lines. Always wondered what was inside.
The track within St Mary Redcliff was from the adjacent Tram Line. The tram system took a hammering during the war years

I went down there a couple years back, there was a full on caravan down there in storage along with a bunch more road signs. The connection to the redcliffe caves you mentioned in the video is sealed, the tunnel cut the caves in half when it was built and as a result some of the cave network was lost.
I'd be careful with this one though as the council still owns it for storage. I shifted the gate slightly open when I went down and it was fixed within a couple days so looks like its checked regularly
(edit, yeah you mentioned the tunnels size, this part of the line was double tracked, it carried goods trains from temple meads under redcliffe and through the harbour and through to the lines to exceter and Portishead, so it's massive as a result)

It’s a tram rail monument. The tunnel was not hit by a bomb. The tunnel was built by cut-and-cover method and the caves were intersected by it. The side walls block the caves.

22.26 shows the photo of the church with the 2railway lines entering the tunnel under the top left corner of the churchyard, there's another railway line just below them with a loading platform, where you zoom in on the photo. At 22.48 you do a drone shot of the same area and zoom in on the tunnel, at the right hand side of the building to the right of the tunnel is what looks like a plywood wall up against the roadway edge. Could that be the other tunnel?

One thing's for certain though, I will definitely NOT be renting a room above the kitchen, there will be old Jarman + his wife ready to do their own rendition of Sweeney Todd, tipped off the bed, down the shute + straight into a vat of boiling oil on the stove...Ahh, they don't make 'em like him anymore. Awesome footage Matt, I wonder if the rumour of tunnels under the church itself maybe a misunderstanding. A tunnel did exist leading past directly in front of the old and now long since demolished Vicarage. Is it possible that earlier mine workings existed prier to St Marys being built in the 15th century, however any workings would most likely to of existed prior to the 1100-1200. Subsidence is a massive issue in the area so it has some merit for sure.

On the picture at 22:25 there are more than just one tunnel visible going under the churchyard and crossing Pump Lane. To me this looks like 3 or 4 tracks. So there could be another smaller tunnel in parallel to the one you walked through. I had a look on Google Earth and this tunnel maybe connected now to that "Kuponya Therapies" building.. It's all just a guess.

People in places like Bristol are beginning to understand the very short sighted policy of kneecapping British railways, London especially is regretting the loss of the goods stations at Nine Elms and Bishopsgate and just realising the huge congestion is primarily down to the loss of those two stations and Bristol is the same, roads clogged up by haulage, pollution through the roof and Beeching was warned this would happen if he crowbar'd his murderous policies through, you only have to go visit towns like Wincanton near me, once upon a time a thriving growing town... more like a ghost town since the railways went and all along the old S&D big industry has failed or moved like St Ivel and Babycham. When given the opportunity to connect Radstock back up to the mainline, did the council seize the chance??? Nope they wanted the land for more bleeding houses, companies had told the local council they would consider setting up shop in Radstock if there was a rail link... now they have gone elsewhere just so the property maggots can build more badly built horrible paper houses :(
