  • We took a visit to Bristol to find the fabled Rifle Range Bunkers and some other rumoured Tunnels. We came away excited after we got into the WW2 air raid bunkers which then became used as a Rifle Ranges. These were supposed to have gone in a continuous horseshoe shap inside the cliffs... we find out that the reality was somewhat different to the rumours.

Nice explore in the tunnel. The bridge looks superb at night. Might take a trip out when I've got nothing to do on a night shift 😎 Thanks for the book tip I'll pick a copy of that up!

Open doors day is amazing ❤️ you have just made me feel so homesick, when I worked in the hotel opposite the entrance you went on to the bridge, I used to sit and look at the bridge and listen to it creak from pure weight of people walking over from Ashton Park when the festivals were happening 🙈
Now 22 years ago the railway was still all closed off and we would walk down the side rd and into the trees and enter the railway and bbc caves from there. That hotel you point out is called the Avon gorge x
There’s an amazing fb for the railway lots of info there x the tunnels either side of the gorge were indeed railway tunnels but I believe they were bombed in the war and closed off, I’m home in two weeks mum has a ton of books I’ll read through them again and I’ll send you pics x
If you go to the other side into Cumberland basin and walk the other side you will he railway that they used to take stuff to Avonmouth

Ive read there is another rifle range on the other side. Not sure how true that is. Will have to be investigated.

TheSecretVault the other sides much easier to get to 😉 Bristol really is full of tunnels it’s mad I can’t get my head round how much has changed. There used to be a way into the tunnels in redcliffe but I bet that’s been bricked up to ☹️

Another one that books up in seconds on Open Door day is Temple Meads Stations underground (well vaulted ceilings mostly) access tunnels. There is talk of the Rocks Railway (Clifton) being re-opened to the public so you can see the BBC wartime studio, I don't think there are plans to make it operational again though.
Downsy (A Sam-FM DJ) is also a Suspension Bridge guide - he might be able to tell you how and when you can visit the internal workings of the bridge.

Apparently, the firing range tunnel was used as a rave venue at one point, and lots of evidence of that could at one point be found in there such as laughing gas canisters and discared bevvie cans etc, seems to have been removed I guess. I wonder what kind of tunes they were banging out? Must have been good fun! :)

Great video guys, i have heard that across the river there is tunnels that lead further down the river. i was told that these tunnels were used by passengers who were ill disembarked further down the river and had to walk through the tunnels up towards bristol. unsure if true. but may be worth a visit on the other side. Regards Dave.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was in his mid twenties when he designed an idea for the bridge. Money for the project dried up although some small parts were started. After Brunel Died they decided to resurrect the project. The original Brunel design wouldn't have worked (for the new needs of the bridge some 30 years later from the original design), so other project leaders, with newer technologies available, had to revise the design of the bridge to make it safer and to finish it off.

All the wartime rooms/tunnels were extensions of the Clifton rocks railway and are all on the other side of the bridge which you pointed to at the beginning. The bottom original doors can be seen from the road at the bottom and are all blocked up. The top access is just on the other side of the road from the original pump house next to the hotel. Easy access into the tunnels from the top sections next to the hotel! There is also old ballrooms etc which were a part of the hotel i believe up there too which are abandoned. Also those 'forest' areas you were walking in are a well known area for men to meet up in the night...not the kind of place you want to be seen walking around with other blokes during the late of night! lol

The road is called The Portway (A4) and that stretch runs from Jtn 18 M5 to Hotwells.
The toll was 20p for cars and 2p for pedestrians for years
If you think it’s bad when a vehicle passes you on the bridge try crossing it when the bridge is closed to traffic and it’s used for pedestrians only during the ballon fiesta and other big events in Ashton Court, you seriously can’t walk in a straight line and feel as pi**ed as a fart where the bridge is swaying so much

The other tunnel used to be used to store council docs, wasn't very big but flooded a lot, was a wet explore...
used to go under the 'Clifton rocks railway'

you wanna be careful around there, some of the most popular dogging hotspots in the UK! Also, the railway line beneath Bishop's Knoll is, despite it's appearance, an active railway.

The tunnel started subsiding a few years ago and Bridge Valley Road was closed for ages while they figured out how to shore it up. I was told that the BBC were going to use it as a war room but were turned away by an angry mob wanting to use it as an air raid shelter - so that was when they moved into the Rocks Railway site.

The tunnels were part of the Bristol Port & Pier Railway, active 1865-1920ish. There is a Wikipedia article. Interesting that the creepy building with the flags stands in Sion Hill.

Those probably opened or closed gates to control the water making its way to the Floodplain at the mouth of the river after a heavy rain . Designed to allow water out when the tide goes out and close when it comes in .

The Zippos or Bics were for Emergencies Only . You Should Shoot a Vid using some of those Filters or Apps . With all the Historical old Buildings & Streets you have Available . The Camaraderie of you & your Collaborators . You Could Make a Monster Vid . Rent some Costumes . Tks for all the Adventures Bro .

The story at 06:10 isn’t quite correct... 2 young sisters were thrown off by their father in 1896 and like you said, their dresses helped them float down.. a passing boatman call James Hazel from Pill, Somerset heard the splash and rowed over and pulled them into his boat..
If you google it you will get the full story, James Hazel married my 4th Great aunt, most of the information you read will say he’s a pilot but this isn’t correct... he was a Pill Hobbler/Boatman...
There’s a photo of him and the girls if you google it with the information I’ve given!

There was another tunnel that you can see that goes under the road that goes from the Portway up to the Zoo but this has been filled in as it had become unstable with the road being closed for a couple of years til it was sorted.
