Bristol LOST Victorian Underground Tunnels PEOPLE LIVED UNDERGROUND

  • People used to live underground in these tunnels. This is the first time these tunnels have been filmed for youtube and this is a small fraction of what is under the cities streets as a lot of these tunnels are now segregated off into sections under specific buildings but according to the legends of Bristol used to run like streets unter Bristol so that you could walk from one side of the city to the other. You can see many of the bricked up areas which would allow the tunnels to continue on even further than we can see here.
It was a real privellidge to be allowed to see this area of Bristol which very few have ever seen. Thanks to Sam and Jess for arranging this one. This is like stepping back in time to a very different view of an impoverished lifestyle that would have xisted a long time ago alongside the above ground Bristol that many got to see.
See also the vide onthe Bristol Obelisk here which goes into this in some more depth: • BRISTOL OBELISK - 20 y...
This video took a long time to come out because we asked if the people involved minded having their faces in the video but as far as I am aware we didnt get a reply, so to play it safe we blurred out the faces. However if those involved do get in touch to say they dont mind their faces beuing included we do have an un-blurred edition we could stick out.

I lived in the city for 15 years and the whole place is a rabbit Warren of tunnels like these as well as rivers and a former railway line at Redcliff Hill. I dont think anyone truly knows just how many there are and at I think Lawrence Hill they found the original road complete with a few old shop front hidden under the road when it was raised to allow trains to pass close by.

Some of this is much older than Victorian. The Corn Street; St Nicks Market; Clare Street and all off shoots are riddled with these.

I really enjoyed this. Love the music, you narrating, and beautiful architecture. I live in a 1890's home and it has a staircase like the one's here. It's very difficult to carry groceries up to much bigger things. Couldn't get a refrigerator up because the delivery men were afraid of damaging the stairway. The stairs are beautiful but can be difficult with daily life. But still beautiful.

I’m suggesting that the spaces weren’t for living but, for a business once located in the building and they used the rooms as a manufacturing area. The cauldrons may have been for boiling/dyeing cloth or yarn possibly. What say you?🙂

It must have been terrifying down in those tunnels with bombs exploding nearby, deafening noise, everything shaking, dust falling & knowing that a direct hit would get you even down there & that when you emerged your home & workplace & your friends might be gone. I expect the metal panelling was to stop an unstable area from collapsing during bomb blasts.

Interesting, the conservative party room still has candle/lamp sconces on the walls at around shoulder height. You can tell they are for candles or naked flame lamps as there is soot just above them on the start of the curved roof.

At 21:50 odd the 2 meters on the wall, well I'm guessing they're meters, and the lead pipes could be gas, I can remember when my godmothers place had her gas changed from the old coal gas they had to remove the lead pipes and ripped up a section of the old gas main in the street which was lead sheeting wrapped timber lathe construction to give strength to the pipe so it wouldn't crush under the weight of earth or conveyances above ground.
