- Exploration of Thurgoland's new and old abandoned railway tunnels just north of the city of Sheffield. Running side by side the new tunnel is now part of the Trans Pennine trail, while the old tunnel is hidden and forgotten, hiding its splendid Victorian stonework.
Full copyright was obtained for final photograph's for the sum of 3 pints of beer.

Hi Martin yes light painting really shows the detail up, time consuming, can be 5 minutes a photo and don,t always get it right first time. But when you see a good image come up on the computer screen you think wow, look at the detail.

This vlog is proof, if proof were needed that demonstrates just how much natural talent there is to be found amongst ordinary, ‘every day’ people. RUclips is full of great personalities, like yourself who confidently share their interests with ‘like minded’ people. Fired by their passion and commitment, they ‘knock the highly overpaid professionals for six’, those who continually seek to inflate their overblown egos and view themselves worthy of ‘celebrity status’, aided by Agents who demand ever higher salaries for their client’s.
If mainstream TV had the sense to ditch this self obsessed tribe of ‘Divas’ and ‘Prima Donna’s’ who daily inhabit TV Chat Shows, promoting themselves with their banal accounts of their own glamorous lives, perhaps, may be only then will mainstream TV start to stem it’s flagging viewing audiences and make significant cost reductions. Well done Patrick.

Hope you have more disused railway tunnels on your agenda Pat. I'm a full blown railway tunnel nerd. I've been inside the extensive network of mine workings that ajion Box tunnel on the Great Western mainline (don't try this at home folks) many moons ago. Amazing system running for miles under the rural softy south. Blessings on you and your tribe sir.

Victorian Engineering is fascinating, when you consider all what you see was done by hand, hard graft and craftsmanship, all the excavation done by hand hundreds of men and the spoil moved by horse and cart in the middle of nowhere! amazing really. another great video Pat, sounds like York was a jolly boys outing to me ! did you enjoy it.
Hi Roy nice to hear from you, such a amazing peice of Victorian Engineering, like you say built by craftsmen nearly 180 years ago, I wonder how we would go on today, several years planning and years behind date I would think. The tunnel is still there in all its glory, a monument to the men who built it.

challenges of dealing with certain aspects of security staff at Stocksbridge Liberty Steels.
Just spent a lunchtime having another look at the Thurgoland video, and I'm reminded of the old tunnel at Spinkhill, sadly, time did not permit me to venture further on that one since I was also engaged on some allotment work at Stephen Hill, Sheffield......family needs beckoned, but Spinkhill is on the list, probably cycle through that one and try and improve on my filming technique.......practice does eventually make near perfect I hope, anyway, it has obviously worked for you as it will eventually work for me. My wife Sue and I both agree one of the highlights of this year was actually being able to meet and chat briefly with you at Redmires, you are indeed an unforgettable character, so inspiring.

Great video Pat, really enjoying your stuff. One small point - the new tunnel is the Down tunnel, the old tunnel was laterly used for the Up line, not the other way round. Line direction was Up towards London Marylebone, i.e. towards Sheffield.

Thanks for documenting and sharing this, especially the closed tunnel. I have often wondered what is in there. We often cycle through the Trans-Pennine tunnel after hiring bikes from Penistone. As a boy a grew up in Deepcar and often played near the Woodhead line in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I remember those Class 76 electric trains that you showed at the end (painted in BR Blue and Yellow at the time) hauling freight through Deepcar Railway Station. Me and my mates used to stand on the footbridge and drop mudbombs on them as they went past! The line is still open between the old Sheffield Victoria Station and Deepcar for the steelworks access at Stocksbridge.
Hi Jason yes alot of what you say I remember, I worked at Deepcar Electricity Substation near the station for many years. You sound like you had a great childhood like we all did at that time.
Recently went up on Wicker Arches then realised the Aldwarke to Stocksbridge steel train still used the line so could not really explore it as it was a live line. Thanks for your comments, really know where your coming from, thanks Pat

Hey up Pat, I enjoy all of your videos, in particular the railway ones. I grew up near a disused line and station near Lincoln, 5 Mile House. It always had my imagination running riot. Mums side of the family hail from Sheffield and knew Fiskerton well as used to come by train for fishing. Ps, be great to buy you a pint on your next 'fishing trip' to Newark! All the best, Rob.

As one of the few survivors of that era, I passed through these tunnels every day as a Guard at Rotherwood Depot. We fought hard to keep the line open but this closure was the final act of some very bitter and twisted men. There had been a vendetta against the Great Central Railway and a vow to close every GC line in the country. The loss of this line is still being felt today. The loco in York museum is one of the fleet I worked with. These were very powerful machines and could move very large tonages over the Pennines.
Yes John such a pity the line was closed, it would of been useful if it was running today, I,am glad I got to see the loco that ran on this line at the Railway Museum, thanks Pat

With an ancestry of 190 years in the mining industry together with an appreciation of railways and railway architecture, I always find the subject of tunnels and tunnelling an absorbing and fascinating one. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff,Pat. Did my first few years on the railway up and down Woodhead. Watched all your vids, some many times, and they are great. Like the camping stuff up the Hope Valley ,too , you may even have seen me up and down there driving EWS/DB freight on my last 18 or so years. Me and my missus love the way you never suffer short rations on a wild camp , you dine like a king! Any chance you may at some point do some model aeroplane stuf? And more motorbike stuff? Railway stuff will always be welcome ,too. Keep up the good work ,it IS appreciated.

Pat,if you like Woodhead , her's some links to Flickr stuff with Woodhead content. Deadman's handle and meself started on the job same day ,Oct. 4th,1977 ,in guard's school at Man Vic. He's got some good insider pix on there. There's a few at Reddish depot of mine, and a mate from Freightliner has some on of his Reddish shed model layout. At the time I never thought it would close, it was just hot air. How wrong can yer be,eh? Loved your pubcrawl vid, and shared your diappointment at finding a Greene King house. Can't win 'em all. I'm just waiting for a mash to complete, having 2 days brewing , as I too love my ale. If ever you come over to Mancland, be sure to visit the Marble Arch in the northern quarter, if you have'nt already ,it's astunner. For Martin Zero- if youlike barrel-vaulted ceilings,you'll love this, tho' I guess you've probably been in there? Pat, never got meself into the Sheffield Tap despite passing it whilst working. Back in the day ,woulda been different. By 'eck it would!

Great explore and very interesting Pat . I think you should ride that motorbike of yours through the first tunnel and record the lovely reverb .Now that would make a good video . Always a shame to see the old tunnels in a state of neglect when you think about all the men who built them and the time and effort it took . The light painting technique looks fabulous and adds to the quality of the film :)

Really enjoyed your video, very interesting to see the old tunnel in all its glory. It would be nice to see this old route reopened sometime, the only issue is getting back the Woodhead tunnel.
