- In this video we explore a underground culvert known as The Breech
Remember Shakespeare and Henry V........ " Once more my friends unto the breech, once more "
It will all become clearer in the video.
This culvert built around the 1880,s, is very steep, its only 6 foot high and is a vivid orange colour, but makes a interesting explore.
Can't help thinking of you having to go back and forth to get your video footage Patrick 📹📷
Yes I do but it gets the footage I want, so worth it for the results, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 it's well worth your effort as you take some great footage.
Refreshing to see videos that are not full of shaky hand held footage or constant arms length selfie style sections.
Keep up the great work.
Yes, walking twice the distance that we get to see
Absolutely brilliant Pat, I love this stuff. You do this stuff so well, the shots and photography 👌
Thanks Martin, appreciate you comments, and enjoying your vidios, thanks Pat
I love both your videos! Credit to you both!
Fantastic insight again, places we would never dream looking at. Thanks for sharing, can't wait for the next one. 👍
Thanks Lindsey, took a bit of finding this one, well hidden away, but again a nice explore, Pat
Patrick Dickson, I live at Greystones, Sheffield. So these videos are a real eye-opener. Have you ever done any School talks about your adventures? I bet many Schools would love you to share them and to see your amazing photos!
Father's day, means my TV ! Just watched this explore on the box with my young children, they loved it ! Going to show them some more of your vids now. Cheers Pat, keep up the good work.
Thanks Jay and glad you enjoyed the vidio, only a short one but such a lot to see, all the best Pat
Patrick Dickinson bbc is not required abandon all licenses ye who enter here
Recently come across your channel, and got to say, I’m very impressed.
A real treat to watch and learn about something so different and interesting.
Credit to you for having the nerve to explore these culverts.
Checking out all your vids now.
Welcome aboard Mark, had a couple of years exploring all Sheffields underground rivers and tunnel, amazing places hidden away, hope you enjoy all my content....thanks Pat
Great video again Patrick. Fantastic camera work as usual. You came close to filling your boots in that breech. Not for the faint of heart!
Yes nearly, but managed to stay dry, amazing places under our feet, thanks Pat
The quality of the stonework looked absolutely superb, especially when you think it is all hidden from view. No quality spared when it was built. Thanks again for another interesting insight into our industrial past Pat.
Yes Mike, built by craftsmen, when you think of the conditions the men must of worked under to build these amazing places, all the best Pat
Thanks Patrick. I'm so, so glad and lucky to have discovered you/your channel. Easily one of the most endearing of people the internet has ever given me. God bless you pal.
So nice of you to say, thank you, Pat
Fascinating glimpse into a world few of us get to see. Many thanks Pat. You are an inspiration to us all.
My pleasure Kevin, great to be able to bring these hidden places for people to view..... thanks Pat
Hi Pat, the first section of culvert you explored, built in masonry, was to take the watercourse (Sough Dike) beneath the Sheffield to Manchester Railway and I suspect it would have been built around the late 1840's. The concrete extension to the culvert was presumably put in to take the water underneath the factory when it was built.
Yes Dan sounds about right, steep railway embankment to climb down to the entrance, whether they spraycreated the stone in the middle or more modern build not sure, thanks Pat
Morning Patrick.
Love to see quality workmanship, the stonework is unbelievable as being a bricklayer/stone mason I appreciate it all. It perhaps lost a few life's during it's construction.
Nice video and history/heritage.
Take care my friend 👍🇬🇧⚒
Thanks the brickwork in these victorian culverts are amazing, more like art work, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492thanks for then reply.
I can imagine Patrick. I have a love for old brickwork. Where I am from there is a viaduct and was blown away when I finally went to go see it. We cannot let these old structures crumble. Brick engineering 👌 the craftsmanship/pride of the old school bricklayer/stonemason was on another level. Like you said more like art work. 100 % correct sir.
Look forward to the next one take care 👍🇬🇧⚒
Hi Patrick. Everything about your videos is great: the locations, your delivery & filming style style, and the still photography - ohh the photos are fabulous! Thank you for taking your viewers to places most would never experience. Susan, Las Vegas, NV
Hi Susan, hope your weather in Las Vegas is better than ours, very damp and cloudy here. Thank you for your kind comments, glad you enjoy my videos, I certainly get a lot of pleasure out of filming and editing the videos, looking forward to 2020, thanks Pat
Your video, editing and commentary skills are excellent Pat. I hope you enjoyed making this film as much as I did watching it
Yes love making these videos, keeps me busy throwing up different challenges all the time, part of the fun, all the best Pat
..... I saw that you were stood like a greyhound in the slips, straining upon the start. The game was afoot and you followed your spirit, and charged up that culvert, and we cried 'God for Harry, England, and Saint Patrick"
Great video as always, thank you!!. Good luck from Spain!!
Thanks David, yes was all ready for this one, sometimes you've just got to go for it, thanks Pat
Thanks for taking the time to make and share this explore. The camera work starting around 5:25 was very effective! I think it would be fair to say that all your videos are like a personal journey that we have been invited along on. I think it's your personal touch that sets your channel apart from the masses. Such a fantastic channel!
Wow that's great, really appreciate your comments, I sort of base my vidios on a journey and it's great to have you along, all the best Pat
Well once again you furnished us all, with another great vlog. Full of interesting facts on history as well as a look into these secretive underground culverts. Its always a pleasure to watch your vlogs pat, you go where most people dare not go, you should write a book . You do it so we don't have to. Your a great man all the best to you.
Thank you for those very kind comments, must admit I love these explores, quite challenging to film, and certainly gets a bit of adrenaline flowing when trying to get in undetected thank you again, all the best Pat
Once again a fantastic production. Your photography in low light, to me outstanding. Well done.
Love that side of photography, most of these places have been in the dark, since they were built, all the best Pat
WOW, What another amazing video Sir Pat. I know your a very brave man as I would not step foot in the culverts you do. These videos give your viewers a interesting journey which some would never do. I still await the Pat discovery show on the TV. Be careful out there and we all look forward to your next adventure.
Thanks really appreciate your kind comments, this was a very colourful culvert, mainly orange though, been filming 36DD under the steelworks further up the valley at Stocksbridge, should be out in a couple of weeks, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick. Very interesting video and a bit of history too. Your explore videos are great and shows how much fun you can have exploring. I bet you can get great shots there of light painting in parts like the water and orange mud. Great video again from you Patrick!!!
Thanks for kind words yes light painting really shows up the detail of these underground places, and like you say, so much fun, thanks Pat
This has some great colour in the video and photos. The cinematography and production design get an A+.
In some respects, I think you have created a new art form. You incorporate many aspects, such as history, exploration, risk taking, travel, caving, engineering, art, communication and performance skills. On top of this you give yourself, purely honest and unique, as well as very kind and generous.
At considerable time and expense, You have provided not just a rarely found lesson in all of the subjects I just mentioned, above, but a damned good example of how to be an above average and substantially decent human being.
Also commendable is your initiative and willingness to do the hard work required, to turn a great idea into something real.
Awesome, Pat. Truly awesome. Rather than saying that I can hardly wait until your next production, I will admit that I am looking forward to viewing "The Breech" a few more times because I always find more, by giving your videos a few more looks.
That is so kind of you to leave such nice comments. I do have a lot of interests and these explores certainly involve a lot of them. I know I only put a vidio on every month or so, but I prefer to spend alot of time producing the best quality vidio I can, thank you again, Pat
That was yet another enjoyable explore, and to know that we still make things in Britain is brilliant !
Yes still producing and great day out, thanks Pat
That stonework and culvert is awesome and a tribute to the craftsmanship used to construct it.
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
Thanks Michael, yes it amazes me how well built these places are, and how they have lasted for 150 or so years, all the best Pat
Good to hear you back to normal too. 👍🏻
Fantastic as ever Pat. Stunning photography. Certainly some man hours gone into the construction of the culvert. Well done 👍
The brickwork was amazing and really showed up on the still photos, very old but still in good condition, a tribute to the men that built it, all the best Pat
Nice explore Patrick, a very well built culvert, Your voice is sounding much improved as well, Stay Safe, ATB :)
Thanks for that, Pat
Fantastic well done Patrick . I was up in Stocksbridge yesterday found some old mines very close at the end of 36DD . Cant wait for the conclusion of that one . The paper mill now in Oughtibridge has gone now flattened to the ground 😢 and lost forever. Got my first ever job there . Keep well mate all the best .
Thanks Ian, yes the whe area round there seems to be of mined at sometime, been past old British Tissues site each time I visit Stockbridge, like you say flatened.
36dd going well but hit big problems when filming part 2, all will be revealed in couple of weeks, thanks Pat
Patrick Dickinson I was once told Patrick people will all ways need to wipe there Backside that’s why working in a paper 🧻 miil would be a job for life . Now it’s gone now forever all that wonderful history wiped out . 😥
Dear Pat
I do hope you’re keeping well. Just catching up with more of your videos. Loved this one! My family live a short 5 min drive from this location and I never knew that culvert existed. How interesting! Only a month after you filmed this, I was over visiting and we spent a morning walking in the woods just above there. We dropped down and had a breather on that very same bench before tackling the steep lane back up the hill. If only we’d been a little earlier we may have bumped into you!
Thank you, as always for your amazing videos Pat. Simply marvellous!
Much love.
Ginette xXx
Hi Ginette, and nice to hear from you, a small world that your family lived so near, I know the area well as I spent 40 years working for YEB and built alot of the power lines in the area.
Took a bit of finding this culvert, but an interest one, even though I nearly breeched my waders...... thanks Pat
Such impressive filming and production. This is real quality and good enough for TV. Superb that you do this on your own.
Thanks and really appreciate those kind comments, part 2 should be out couple of days on Sun, had to complete this one, all the best Pat
Thanks for taking us on another explore. I love the light painting and your unpretentious presentation style.
Thanks appreciate that, Pat
Stuck here in Bangkok due to the restrictions on travel. I love old structures like the one you have just shown us. Thank you.
My pleasure 😊
I always enjoy watching your videos. Stay safe my friend!
Thanks Mike, yes saftey is always at the forefront, Pat
Very good many thanks for your excellent films always interesting and well put together the Intrepid explorer 👍
Thanks Nicholas, glad you watch my vidios, Pat
Beautifully made film and thanks for introducing me to "ganister " - you learn something every day !
Thanks, first time I had heard about gannister, thanks Pat
Great little explore, brilliant film/photography, very entertaining video. All your films bring out the almost childlike thrill of being places that either you shouldn't be or that very few people have been. Fantastic work!
Yes your photos are a amazing Pat. It’s incredible how all these tunnels and culverts were built. Our country must have been a hive of activity all those years ago
Thanks Rich, its the light painting techniques that show the amazing detail up, surprises me at times when I put them on the computer, all the best Pat
another very interesting video Patrick the picture quality is amazing and the colours look fantastic look forward to the next one thanks Patrick.
Thanks David, yes great photo opportunities in places like this, thanks Pat
Woke up this morning to another great Patrick Dickinson video! Great job! If that pool at the "breech" had been about two inches deeper, you would have discovered a new meaning for the word "breech". As in "wet breeches"!
Yes Mark only just made it, would of made some interesting footage if it had gone over, all the best Pat
Thank you for another wonderful video. Always excited to see what you will explore or do next.
Thanks Steve, hoping to get back to 36DD on next vidio, although there has been some problems, thanks Pat
another great video and some super light paintings, you have to admire victorian engineering still lasting hundreds of years later.. cheers Patrick
Yes certainly built to last, you wound,nt think it was built nearly 150 years ago, thanks Pat
A joy to watch, educational to. Thanks again Pat for a great production.
Thanks Bill glad you enjoyed it, thanks Pat
Again, always a pleasure coming along with you!ATB👍👍👍
Thanks Stuart, great to have you along, thanks Pat
Interesting culvert, look enchanting when you walk out at the end , nice video
Yes very summer like especially with all the flies, thanks Pat
Excellent adventure walking through that culvert.. Throughly enjoyed the watch...
Thanks very colourful one, but nice explore, thanks Pat
thanks for the video Patrick,, i always look forward to the next one, there's so much history out there to explore. over here in Harrogate we have got a couple of old railway tunnels that we explored as kids,, great fun.
Sounds interesting, I, ll have read up on them, thanks Pat
Another interesting explore! As I was watching you I was thinking about the purpose of the culvert as well, and as you mentioned, I thought it was made to expand the useable land on top of the waterway. Neat adventure once again. Thanks for posting Pat.
Thanks Doug, still not sure what culvert was built for, but made a great day out, thanks Pat
Just WoW ! * When you walk off into the distance of the tunnel with the light :-) What a fantastic film effect,Thank you so much for taking me along to a place I wouldn't feel comfortable going. It looked amazing down there*
Thanks for commenting, Pat
Excellent video, Patrick. Thank you for the history behind the site...extremely interesting! Looking forward to your next explore!
Your welcome, Charlie alot of the enjoyment of these explores is doing the research you learn so much, thanks Pat
Watched this a couple of times now, it still totally fascinates me. Thanks pat !
Yes Richard, not a long one but still a amazing place...... thanks Pat
Hi Pat, "once more into the breech" indeed. Fascinating stuff and totally absorbing. You certainly find some interesting places to explore. Well done mate!!!! Regards George
Nice to hear from you George and hope you are well. Amazing what lies hidden beneath our feet, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 Cheers Pat, It's good to hear from you too. I thought for a while you were going to get a wet backside down there in the breech but you managed to avoid "getting a ducking". Looking forward to your next escapade...take care mate. Best regards George
This was brilliant. I really enjoyed it. The shadow of you that was a drain pipe absolutely bazaar!!! Thank you
Thanks Lewis, only a short one this but amazing colours, and shadows, thanks Pat
Thanks again Pat, I love your videos. I must say, you're very courageous to enter these places completely alone. Keep 'em coming mate. Let us know if you ever come to Australia.
Thanks Gérard, I love these places and feel quite at ease a d they are such interesting places to photograph
Chances of me making it to your beautiful country are slim I think, all the best Pat
Thanks to you, and others like you, I rarely watch the TV any more. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the vidio, thanks Pat
So wish there could be a TV series made of your outstanding adventures as we never know the true history beneath our feet the lost underworld locked in time great job done by you yet again thanks for your dedication I'm loving the videos
Would be good, as long as nobody tried to control what I did, don,t want to go anywhere near, WORK, all the best Pat
As always a joy to see your videos, inspires me to do more outdoors. Thank you bud and keep on treking :)

Thanks yes my voice is back to normala nd it was a great explore, all the best Pat
Love the shot at around 10.30
Great video, thanks for sharing with us
torchesarecool uk yes its awesome he is so good at the photography. Brilliant!
Thanks, I love taking silhouettes, usually with flash, but this worked good in the small culvert with just torchlight, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 would you mind if I ask what torches you use (I am a torch nut and reviewer)
The colour temperature looks very pleasing in your shots.
@@ainsgb Hi my main torch I use for light painting is a Night Searcher Panther you need a really powerful torch to light up the bigger culverts and railway tunnels.
As its Led lighting I set my camera iso to 5500 Kelvin, seems to give reasonable results, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 very nice light and it does seem suited to your needs. Long run times in particular.
If you have time check out the Emisar/Noctigon range of lights (I'm not an affiliate, just a fan). You can get them with 4000k high colour rendering LEDs (SST20 4000k 95cri). Beautiful warm tint and very easy on the eyes.
Not sure how it would affect your photography. But for your own use during explorations or out camping I think you would appreciate the difference.
Cheers
Perfect Sunday afternoon viewing! Great light painting shots, loved the shadow too. Really had to look hard to see it was a drain outlet! Sounds like your voice is back to normal again. Thanks for sharing as usual, stay safe on your explores 👍🏻
Thanks yes my voice is fine now, and this was a great place to photograph, all the best Pat
Amazing workmanship, excellent job as always.
Yes Sarah, built by craftsmen made to last, all the best Pat
Thank you Patrick for sharing! Great job.
Only a short one this but amazing stonework, a pleasure to explore and photograph, thanks Pat
Excellent video. Love your videos they are really good. You should be on TV
BBC wouldn’t have the balls or imagination
Congratulations on a good documentary. It must take a lot of thought, effort and tenacity to complete. Job well done!
Yes alot of effort and time but so interesting and a great way to pass your time, thanks Pat
excellent little video and photos are superb
Thanks yes the light painting teqniques really shows the detail up, thanks Pat
Nice one Patrick i bet you earned your post trail pint that day! It must have took a lot of tooing and frowing to set up those camera shots plus a lot of post video editing. Well done! It is that well put together it is up to and beats the standards of a professional BBC outdoor expo programme. It is almost as if somebody is there with you its that seamless.
Thanks for that, it was a pleasure to film, got a bit of a system now, first visit is rece and light painting, then follow with vidioing and finally add any audio to stills, seems to be working, thanks Pat
Fantastic explore video Patrick. Lo've watching your videos which are very informative. Keep up the great work!
Thanks appreciate that, Pat
Loved it, Patrick, some great light shots, whenever I watch you in these tunnels the same thoughts come to mind....he is far braver than me lol, thank you for enriching my life with the wisdom you generate , thank you, Patrick.
Hi Frank yes these are amazing places to take photographs, sort of bringing back to life these places built so many years ago, thanks Pat
Thanks for taking us along, once again.
Glad you enjoyed it thanks Pat
Hi Pat and thanks for the new video. Really enjoyed it and in particular the stunning colours that you captured really well. Did seem longer than 300 metres.
Thanks Rodger, yes amazing vivid orange, everywhere. It was only 300 m, I probably filmed every part of it to make a full detailed video, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick, you've got some guts exploring the breech! I get nervous simply looking in from the outside! Great video, take care!
Thanks Steve, not too bad in there, just a bit orangey, thanks Pat
fantastic video patrick, what a trek ,thanks for wading through that stuff, thumbs up
Yeah added a it of excitement to this explore, all the best Pat
Thank you for another educational video your videos are very good and I'll always watch him I want to thank you for that little trip through there that was pretty cool I can't imagine the smell of that orange mud button go that deep spot you stepped into looked a lot deeper than that thank you for all that effort and keep up the good work my friend
Thanks Phil, glad you appreciated my vidio, I love making them it involves so many different skills, keeps me interested, all the best Pat
Another great video, so many interesting places close by, if you look around.
Yes well hidden this one, glad I found it, thanks Pat
Thanks Pat, yet another brilliant film.
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it thanks Pat
Bloody hell pat the water was only a couple of inches from breaching the top of your rubber stockings in that mid section!
Absolutely brilliant as always, cheers.
Thanks Paul, we call them waders here, stockings tend to be worn by ladies, like fishnets, very nice, thanks Pat
I know thanks Pat was only kidding!
It probably would be funnier still if it was a misunderstanding of translation from one of your oversees viewers but I’m only the other side of the Pennines from you!!
Couldn’t agree more the fishnet ones on the ladies look better than the rubber ones on you!
All the best and thanks for the great videos. Better than most of the rubbish on mainstream telly these days. Look forward to the next wild camp adventure but the explores are also very interesting. Cheers, Paul
@@paulb7200 thanks Paul
Patrick Dickinson yes fishnets for me!
very good explore pat used to come up from derby to oughtibridge and stay with friends sampling the local ale mostly in the comrades club keep them coming best wishes glyn.
Yes Glyn some nice pubs in the area, thanks Pat
Another feather in your crown...thank u very much dear Patrick
Thanks just a small one this, 36DD is massive and will be the next explore, thanks Pat
Really enjoying your channel, and really appreciating the extra work you take to get such artistic quality footage. In particular, your retreating silhouette, the light getting smaller and smaller 10:09-10:42. Fantastic.
Thanks really appreciate your comments, thanks Pat
HI Pat,
I am very impressed that for every shot you basically:
set up the camera facing forward,
filmed yourself moving up the culvert (climing a small waterfall or whatever)
then *cut*
walked back, to get the camera.
walked on to set the camera facing back
went back on yourself again
then filmed yourself from the front going forward.
But it is very well filmed, and I enjoyed your exploration. If I wasn't so claustrophobic, it is something I would like to do.
Thanks for that, yes I spend ages getting the fottage I want, I like the vidio to flow like a story. It does take a long time and effort but that's how I like to do it, and it's worth it for the finished product, all the best Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 It's truly appreciated Pat, those seamless transition shots must take the best part of an hour to set up.
I am considering this video my Fathers day gift. Thank you very much. A terrific explore and history narrative, good work mate. All the best and happy Fathers day to you.
Happy fathers day to you David as well, all the best Pat
Well done a lot of camera setup by the looks of it, I used to go to the paper mill there in the wagon a few years ago, Places like that and Sheffield started my interest in past industry and the quality that the old guys built the place...
Hi that would be British Tissues, further up the valley, they knocked it down last year and believe they are probably building on it now, how times change, all the best Pat
Wow knocked it down , I'd drop there then drive down Outibridge into Sheffield,
And get something to eat in Sheffield cos there was loads of cafes up side steets where you could get a
proper cooked meal for hardly anything, Ace Thanks Patrick.

You've Breeched it again Pat, interesting that, never heard of that material....great images of the underground again. 👍T
"Once more into the breech" interesting place and I managed to stay dry, thanks Pat
Thanks for another interesting vid Pat. That culvert reminded me of some of the old road ways or "Gates" I walked along when I worked down the pit (before Thatcher did a number on us miners).
Yes I can see the similarities with the pits you worked in, I suppose construction methods were similar for all underground workings, thanks Pat
Hi Pat, another great video, well done, really enjoy your productions.
Thanks Brian, only a short one but interesting place, all the best Pat
Another awesome video with great photos and interesting history. Nice one pat and thanks for sharing
