Hi Pat, Just watched this with my dad, who fired steam trains on this line in the 1950's. He said they always went through this tunnel at speed. He calls the refuges the walls 'Man Holes'. Brought back some memories for him. Thanks.
Wow. Very impressive structure. A lot of work to build that. Thank you for taking us along on this voyage....and thanks for showing the light painting technique.
I love this video Patrick, I descend from the Vernon Family and love everything about Haddon Hall. I never knew about this RR Tunnel thanks for taking me thru it.
Your very welcome Diana, such a amazing place all hidden from view, if I had a railway cross my land I would of loved see steam engines powering along, nice to hear from you, thanks Pat
Patrick Dickinson I’d never even heard of it until you mentioned it in your video of the Chesterfield tunnel. However I’ve seen many pics that look like they’ve used the same technique.
14:44 That is an amazing shot. The detail and light in the ceiling above and yet still managing to be in shadow, very nice. Enjoying the videos as well, spot on presenter.
Hi and thanks for watching, a lot of the still photos were taken by lightpainting giving very detailed shots even thought it was pitch black. The photo at 14.44 i took on a 60 sec exposure , I had to stay perfectly still and at the same time wave my torch about in front of me to light everything up and form myself as a silhouette. Thanks again for yor kind comments and watching Pat
Nice video Pat. Amazing tour of our history. I love the 'haunting' sound of the steam engines too! Those engineers really did a 'proper' job in those days and how hard it must have been. Thanks for posting mate and enjoy your attention to detail in your videos.
Jonathan Peake Thanks Jonathan if only we could see a real steam engine pass through the tunnel, probably not but this was the nearest I could get to it, thanks again for your comments Pat
Very interesting. I have visited Haddon Hall and a bit of the estate, many times, it is one of my favourite places...but I never visited the tunnel. knew of its existence. Nice one.
I would re-install a railway line and have it running around the estate or at least some type of line. Then get hold of steam locomotive and so on. Great for tourists and visitors to get a ride and history lesson. Also talk about bragging rights, to have your own steam locomotive, railway line and real proper old tunnel to run the train through. Great video with great pictures.
very interesting Pat - love the light painting - and thanks for the explanation of Light Painting. I know you're taking a break for awhile but just to let you know am following your work and it'll be good to have you back when you are ready!
Many thanks....the light painting does reveal such detail, amazes me when I bring the photo up on the computure, each time I,am so suprised at what it reveals......enjoying my break, see you later in the year.....thanks Pat
wow! you've succeeded in breathing fresh life into this tunnel and given it the opportunity to relive its vintage heritage, I'm sure the tunnel would have been grateful of it Pat, Such a shame they've been left but it certainly makes for great viewing for us and we thank you for that too! Looking forward to the next one :)
Yes certainly lit the place up and brought it back to life, just needed a steam train powering it's way through belching smoke and steam, we can all dream! Got a few more tunnels lined up for next year, all the best Pat
Excellent video, I'm really impressed by the video you took but also the stills with the light painting as you showed us. Good eye catching that mile marker too. If this tunnel is ever destroyed or filled in, get back in there and nick that thing! Thanks a lot for this cool video.
Thanks James, the light painting really shows the detail of the tunnel construction, to think the men that built it never saw it like this, all the best Pat
Great vid and very informative. Risky going on your own but you clearly researched all that prior to the visit. The construction itself is amazing. Thanks again.
Hi Steve, magnificent tunnel , new what to expect when I went in bit of common sense with spare torches and general awareness of trips and fall otherwise pretty safe, thanks for comments Pat
Just found your channel great pictures inside with the torch painting never seen that before. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of your videos on your channel well done.
David Howard Thanks David, started out mostly wild camping but like to vary the vidios, hence the exploring, great places to go in poor weather and a different but interesting type of photography. The light painting certainly provides some great photos, I amazed myself with the detail they provided, all the best Pat
Thanks for a fascinating video. Interesting background on the tunnel. Light painting technique fascinating. I have heard of plans to open the tunnel to extend the Monsal trail, with an eventual plan to make a full circular route. But like you say, we'll have to wait and see.
Hi I had read about opening it up similar to the tunnels on the Monsal trail, would provide the missing link, glad I explored it in its original state, thanks Pat
Marvellous stuff, Pat and loved the explanation of how you light paint. So much dedication you have and thanks for showing us the ventilation shafts from above at the end. Love to watch your videos.
joesophie90 hi and thanks for kind comments, this was my first time at light painting and I was amazed at the results, so much detail, could not believe the pictures when I first saw them on the computer. A great place to practice light painting for more challenging locations, later on, all the best Pat
Hi Mo yes there must of been hundreds of men working on something as bi as this, they did a fantastic job as its in pretty good condition 150 years later shows how skillful they were, thanks again Pat
And sadly lives were lost during construction, there is a memorial at the church in Rowsley, see Alan's video. Great video Pat, here's hoping they reopen it sooner rather then later
Smashing video Pat. I can't get about much nowadays but I used to do a bit of mine exploration with my mate Rich. Great days. Now video then and my stills cameras (Canon A1) had no place underground. I really enjoy getting back down under again.
stem digital IS A SCAM thanks for that it's the light painting techniques that gave the great photographs, suprise me how well they turned out, all the best Pat
I'm intrigued by the blocks to the left of the frame at @3:17 . They are of different sizes in the same fashion is those mysterious stone walls in Peru.
Another great tunnel tour loved the lighting Technic for the pictures I got a sense of what it was like running a train through there. Shame so many of these tunnels are not used and left to rot. Keep them coming.
Thank you Pat, another great tour. The photography is excellent, the effects in that tunnel highlighting the brickwork was very well done I felt as if I was there with you.
BADOLDBIKER Hi yes this was a great explore absolutely massive inside Thier needed a lot of light to get the light painted photographs, thanks for watching Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 you're much braver than me. I don't think I'd dare risk having a look. Hence why I subscribe to your channel. Love the way you film it all with you walking off in the tunnels. You must cover some distance having to go back to get the camera after each time. I appreciate the extra effort you go to. I've noticed a very deep shaft at Black Rock Cromford. Do you know if this is just a well, or does it lead somewhere ? Always been curious about it. Right next to a little ruin.
Hi Pat, I first saw this tunnel on Martin Zero's and The Whitewick' channels only a few weeks ago. The end of the tunnel when they went was a dam!! Thank you very much for explaining how you are able to make those wonderful underground photographs, its a very clever technique. Good luck from Spain!!
Yes I saw Martin's video, brought back some happy memories, this was the first railway tunnel I explored, also in a beautiful part of the Peak district I know so well.....thanks Pat
Pat your videos are very informative and done so well, I do filming of wildlife ( mainly reptiles ) out in Derbyshire so know what it takes to do it , the tree camping was astonishing and the patience needed was way beyond anything I've ever done , you truly are an inspiration cherrs John 😃

Hi Michael and nice to hear from you, and the United States. We have a shared interest in the history of our industrial past in the UK. I love exploring and filming these p!aces and appreciate the comments I receive from people like yourself, all the best Pat
That was an excellent watch, Pat. Thank you for sharing. I have never seen the shafts from above. Always been interested in tunnel architecture and my Dad took me up to Haddon in 1970 and we walked in from the Bakewell end to shaft 5. I was scared to death! As I say, brilliant piece of work. Well done.
Hi Ian once inside the tunnel it was the sheer size that got me, probably all that brickwork done by hand such a impressive piece of Victorian construction. the air shafts on the surface also interesting although a bit overgrown and forgotten in places, thanks for watching Pat
Hi Kathryn the photos worked out better than I expected, it was pitch black in some areas and massive so a flash would not of provided enough light, very satisfying when you see the finished results, like anything you may take 6 photos and just one is the shot you were after. Thanks for the comments much appreciated, Pat
Wow! What a great video! Adding the steam train sounds, was the perfect touch! So the owner didn't want to see a steam train go through his property! Now a days any railroad fan, would give their right arm to have that!!! Much blessings to you and yours, being sent from me, in the state of Michigan, U.S.A.
Hi Mark, yes wanted to do a few different videos but will get round to another wild camp soon, the pictures surprised me on how well they worked out, a bit of trial and error to get a good shot, thanks again Mark, Pat
Pat ,Thanks for the tunnel adventure. I enjoyed every second of your video . Great photography . I will be watching for more trips . . Dan , from Canada out .
Thanks Patrick! Great video, really interesting. Appreciated the details on painting by light. I had read about it in photo mags but seeing it in action is better. Great stuff, keep 'em coming!
Hi Terry similar I had read about it but never tried it so I thought a big dark tunnel like Haddon would be a great place to try and very pleased with photos, will be trying it again in the future, all the best Pat
You possibly saw the technique being used with off-camera flash being used as the light source for painting? I have no idea which would be better. The exposure and detail in your shots are superb though. Maybe a photo mag would use them? Cheers, Terry
Cracking video mate, and some great photographs. Loved the light painting. You really know your stuff obviously. Keep 'em coming. Agree whole heartedly we don't know what's under our feet.
Hi Paul first time I had tried the light painting, spent 6 hours in tunnel and took dozens of shots, then picked the best just trial and error until you get the amount of light right, thanks for comments all the best Pat
Hi was certainly interesting to film using the light painting, so surprised when I looked at photos as it was pitch black in most of the tunnel, thanks for watching Pat
Excellent video Patrick and a good explore. You achieved very good results with the light painting technique. The sound effects of steam locos was the icing on the cake.
Hi yes a little bit different this video a great place to explore, if only there was a steam train just left down there, thanks for comments and watching Pat
Great Photography Pat and very interesting. Would have loved to see the pictures in black and white as well, especially with the sound of the steam engine.Good job mate.
Im like you,,,I would have loved to see and hear the trains going by...hearing the chugging sound of the piston engines on each side of the engines as the steam escapes....very cool...I love it.
Hi Patrick, thanks for a very interesting video. I'm amazed at how well your photographs came out, that light painting seems to be a very effective technique.
Hi the tunnel was massive inside and I new a flash would not light it up, I had read about light painting but never had opportunity to try it so this was the ideal location and yes the photos worked out better than I expected, thanks for watching Pat
Excellent video. After watching it I also viewed "A Railway Walk, Rowsley to Haddon" and was surprised by how much the access/undergrowth seemed to have changed (plus by that point I knew what to expect at the end of the other vid). Your photographs were superb.
Al Terego Hi interesting to compare my visit was early spring so would look different in summer when all vegetation growing and in leaf, the light painting really produces excellent photos, thanks Pat
I luckily got to walk through Catesby tunnel just before it was turned into an test centre for automobiles! An absolute behemoth! I wish it was still used for trains but am still glad it’s being turned into something and being used. Great vid mate 👍
Really cool. You'll have to explore the lines now gone of the Midland railway that ran through the peak district. It's really ashame they cut out that line it was so scenic running along the hillsides and rocks with tunnels and viaducts. Wish I could remember the name of that Midland line. But it did connect with Matlock they say.
Abandoned with Bizzy Hi and thanks must admit using the light painting really brought the detail out of the brick and stone work,it amazed me when I put the photos on the computer, all the best Pat
The light painting technique takes me back to the mid 70's I was a photography student and we were taking pictures of the ABC cinema prior to it becoming a bingo hall - using the same technique but using commercial flash heads to paint with. some good photography there Patrick - ATB
Hi Frank certainly a different method of photography but seems to work well, I can see using flash at different locations should work well will give it a try, thanks Pat
Jack Higgins Hi Jack yes some amazing places were built by the Victorian builders , will probably never see construction like this again, thanks for watching Pat
paul waller Hi Paul such a massive interior, took alot of lighting up for photos, the sooty walls seem to absorb slot of light, but look great when put on computer, well worth a visit, thanks for watching Pat
Hi patrick, realy enjoyed that video something diffrent plus the light painting, wow, I keep looking out for your next walks wild camps or whatever, allways enjoyable, keep up the good work.
Hi Les thought I would do something a bit different, still will be doing wild camps but wanted a different routine from walk, camp, cook etc, I have walked past this tunnel many times and always wanted to explore it, thanks for watching Pat
What a great way to show us this secret passage way. Don’t get lost or fall. How would anyone find you? Wonderful photo techniques. I enjoyed your adventure with you.
This guy is interesting I like his videos because they give me a peace of mind when I'm going through some hard times which I have been some hard times
@@patrickdickinson6492 I first saw your two videos back in 2017 and I thought they interesting and I watched them again back last year when I was going through some hard times and I will always remember that thank you and I would like to see more like handdon hall because love old buildings and things like that
That was so interesting, thanks for posting Pat. I was in the New Forest at the weekend and discovered an old railway line. After a bit of research it was the Burley to Holmsley leg of the Castleman "Corkscrew"
Hi Mark, such a impressive sight all hidden from view, a lot of the old railways make interesting walks with interesting history as well, the Castleman Corkscrew sound a very interesting line, all the best Pat
This of course is part of the Peak Rail plan to extend their current operations from Rowsley through to Bakewell. With the help of everybody who wishes to see this fantastic line through the Peak to Buxton reopened this tunnel may once again reverberate to the sound of steam. If that is your wish check out Peak Rail and help the push to get this line reopened. Well done Patrick a fantastic video.
Mall Hutton hi mall yes been on Peak Rail to Matlock a couple of time would be fantastic to have Haddon incorporated into Peak Rail, wether it happens I don,t know, thanks for interesting comments Pat
Thank you for sharing your exploration and photographs. I think this was possibly my favourite of your videos so far. I too would have loved to see a steam train go across my land! That said, the tunnel is awe-inspiring. It made me a little sad though when you showed the one remaining railway sleeper - a telling reminder of all the lines which are no more and the tunnels and bridges which are no longer in use. I bet you really enjoyed locating the ventilation shafts from the surface - that sounded like a bit of a challenge! Also, thank you for talking about light painting. I was curious about how it's done after you mentioned it in your video in the culverts under Sheffield and now I know.
Danielle Britton Hi Danielle, this was my first real underground explore, such a massive place inside, all hidden away with no public access as it is on a private estate. Seems a bit of a waste and quite sad that it's just left and neglected, but I got in which was easy and learnt a lot about light painting. You just do not know what lies below your feet, thanks again for your comments, Pat
Saw it on Julia Bradburys programme and always thought the metal door was always locked but will now be checking it out. Great film and info well done Sir !
Hi Mick must admit I had not seen it Julie, s railway walks. I always thought door was locked but looking at other explores it must of been open for well over 5 years. It did cross my mind what would I do if someone decided to lock it while I was in the tunnel but the door is strained and does not line up with the locking hasp so should be OK once in. Well worth a visit, all the best Pat
Yes will deffo be giving this a visit somepoint very soon but will not get photo's anywhere as good as yours. Well done again and looking forward to more films its great to get away on the moors and I too am very lucky to be only 40mins from the Peak District. I was up on Winn Hill 2 weeks back and had the entire mountain to myself Fantastic !
mick baker I think that program was further up the line and the tunnel was at Monsal Head. That tunnel is now fully open and certainly worth a look if you haven't already been.
Hi Mick (and pat, of course). great video. Did you have a look at whether it was still accessible? I might take a crafty look next time I'm down "home".
Hi Pat, Just watched this with my dad, who fired steam trains on this line in the 1950's. He said they always went through this tunnel at speed. He calls the refuges the walls 'Man Holes'. Brought back some memories for him. Thanks.

Pat ,Thanks for the tunnel adventure. I enjoyed every second of your video . Great photography . I will be watching for more trips . . Dan , from Canada out .
Hi Dan yes very impressive was this tunnel, hope to search out some others , all the best Pat
Cheers,
Terry
Thanks Terry had ,nt thought of that may give it a bit more practice so as to get That perfect Shot, thanks anyway Pat
Fantastic pictures mate well done.
The Revster hi and thanks for that, the method of light painting gave the best pictures, thanks for watching Pat
another excellent video of information cheers Pat, really enjoying these.
Thanks Graham, great place to explore, such a variety of different construction, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick thanks for taking the time to film that found that quite intresting.
Hi was certainly interesting to film using the light painting, so surprised when I looked at photos as it was pitch black in most of the tunnel, thanks for watching Pat
Great video Pat. Really interesting and great detail
Hi Paul glad you enjoyed the video really interesting place, thanks again Pat
Excellent tunnel outing...fantastic engineering
Really nice tunnel this, such a lot of history and a magnificent price of Victorian Engineering. All the best for 2019 Pat
One of my first tunnel explores this, a lot to learn about photography tequniques, thanks Pat
Im like you,,,I would have loved to see and hear the trains going by...hearing the chugging sound of the piston engines on each side of the engines as the steam escapes....very cool...I love it.
Would of sounded fantastic !
You're new light or camera brought out details and colors and I was quite surprised in the beauty of rocks and stones
Sherry Ackerman Hi Sherry yes the light painting amazes me with the quality of the pictures in completely dark environments, thanks Pat
Great vlog.amazing pics you took.look FWD to more tunnels
Have a few more tunnels to explore in next year but will also be wild camping and train journeys as well, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 look forward to them all 😊
As a fellow explorer and train lover, loving your videos.

ruclips.net/video/HW8XNEt8cTs/видео.html awosome railway trACK
Great time Pat, those tunnels are amazing. The light painting worked great, I'll have to remember that. Thx for sharing!
Yes a lot of these tunnels could've utilised for other things rather than just leaving them to deteriorate, interesting comments thanks Pat
Love the 'light painting'. I'm going to try that.
Hi Neil definitely find somewhere dark and have ago you will be amazed with the results, all the best Pat
Great pictures Pat, thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Fergus, the [pictures worked out better than I thought, so much detail have a couple of similar videos coming up in March, all the best Pat
Yes know the like you meant, now the Monsal Train, most of the tunnel s part of the train, thanks Pat
This is a beautiful walk, I used to live up at 9ladies and have done a little exploring around Backwell and Rowley, beautiful countryside
Hi Robbie yes lovely countryside round there with this beautiful tunnel all hidden away, thanks Pat
Patrick such a cool video I really loved all the different camera angles and work you put into this video keep up the great videos !!!!
Abandoned with Bizzy Hi and thanks must admit using the light painting really brought the detail out of the brick and stone work,it amazed me when I put the photos on the computer, all the best Pat
it worked amazing and honestly I have never heard of doing that trick before. I'm deff going to have to try it out now lol keep up the good videos!!!
Love watching the abandoned past good work keep it up 👍
Jack Higgins Hi Jack yes some amazing places were built by the Victorian builders , will probably never see construction like this again, thanks for watching Pat
Thanks for making the video. Went to Haddon Hall in 2014 and bought a book on railway walls.
Would much prefer it the lines were still operating .
Amazing Patrick thanks for sharing
paul waller Hi Paul such a massive interior, took alot of lighting up for photos, the sooty walls seem to absorb slot of light, but look great when put on computer, well worth a visit, thanks for watching Pat
exelen tes tomas fotograficas con exposicion prolongada en los tuneles muy buen trbajo patrik .
Thank you Maria, very kind of you to say, thanks Pat

Love this film. Great job.
Hi Ray great explore this even more exciting because it is private, owned by the Haddon Hall Estate, thanks Pat
What a great way to show us this secret passage way. Don’t get lost or
fall. How would anyone find you? Wonderful photo techniques. I enjoyed your adventure with you.
Hi Mary, I always let my wife know where I am, not that she is always happy with what I get up to, all the best Pat
This guy is interesting I like his videos because they give me a peace of mind when I'm going through some hard times which I have been some hard times

Such gorgeous mosses and ferns! Nice video as usual!

👍🏽🥰It would be nice to see these track’s cleaned & cleared for reuse again, huh??
Yes that would of been amazing, thanks Pat
never heard of torch panting.
came out great.
MrYfrank14 Yes Frank Torch Painting is a great way to get fantastic photos in pitch black conditions, the detail is amazing, thanks Pat
Painting really brings the tunnel to life...
Yes Steven I like to use the light painted shots because they show so much detail, like you say really brings the tunnel to life, thanks Pat
You need to make an art gallery with your pics mate you made some dam good art work right here
Hi your pictures are wonderful, great work
Appreciate that, thanks Pat
That was so interesting, thanks for posting Pat. I was in the New Forest at the weekend and discovered an old railway line. After a bit of research it was the Burley to Holmsley leg of the Castleman "Corkscrew"
Hi Mark, such a impressive sight all hidden from view, a lot of the old railways make interesting walks with interesting history as well, the Castleman Corkscrew sound a very interesting line, all the best Pat
Thank you Pat I really enjoyed watching your video. Colin
Southwest Bushcraft thanks for that Colin it was great to explore and film, thanks Pat
Hi Pat,that torch light trick and camera work to light everything up is quite amazing😮its a shame I don’t understand how it all works😩thanks again Dan
Hi Dan, great way to get photographs in dark places, thanks Pat
watched this before and enjoyed it now watched it again and its really is very very well made thanks for your efforts and time keep up the good work
Hi Clive and thanks for the comments much appreciated really was a fantastic place to explore, Pat
I was up on Winn Hill 2 weeks back and had the entire mountain to myself Fantastic !
mick baker
I think that program was further up the line and the tunnel was at Monsal Head. That tunnel is now fully open and certainly worth a look if you haven't already been.
Hi Mick (and pat, of course). great video. Did you have a look at whether it was still accessible? I might take a crafty look next time I'm down "home".
Very nice, liked the pics!
hi and thanks for comments, really amazing place, thanks Pat
