what a great question to cover! Thanks for this...super helpful as I am looking at redoing my own bag this winter
Great , good bag good ideas and ideal set for winter golf and bad weather days, keep up good work
I love the enthusiasm that came across in your video Andy. Yes, what you say is dead right for the average golfer ...and not said often or loudly enough by many influencers...! For interest sake, my bag is usually G410 3w lofted down @ 13.5*, 3H @ 18*, 4H @ 22*, 5-PW Cleveland HB Launcher hybrid irons, 50 & 54 CBX wedges, a Cleveland Smart Sole 58* SW, PGF Rescue chipper @ 37* and a TM Spyder putter. Love the confidence this setup brings to my game for most conditions I play in here in Oz.
My favourtie club growing up was my grandad's Ben Sayers 9 wood... absolutely loved the club. Took it out cause a lot of people I play with said you shouldn't have that, you dont need it... think after this I'll stick it straight back in!
Absolutely right about the CBX wedges. Nothing has changed my game for the good more than those.
Thank you for an exceptional video! I've honestly never seen another equipment-related video that would help average golfers more than this one. This bag setup is just perfect.
And it's funny - almost nobody has a chipper in their bag of 14 clubs. But if the rules allowed for 15 clubs, you *know* a lot of golfers would add a chipper.
I carry: driver, 3,5,7,9 woods, 5 hybrid, 6,7,8,9 irons, 46,50 wedges and a 60 BigFoot hi toe. And of course my Scotty. I’m thinking of going with a 6 hybrid soon. It is all about control. Great video, thanks for producing. Keep up your good work.
Driver, 3 wood and irons 1 to SW plus putter. Of course, my irons are old and of "traditional" lofts.
Another excellent video, as we have come to expect from you, sir. Keep it up !
Always do what’s right for you! Interesting v-log
great advice for players, like me, who just in the last couple of years have swallowed my pride and changed up my clubs to make the game more enjoyable. I now use a 3,5,7 wood with the same shaft length. I have great confidence in each. My sand wedge is a Cleveland smart sole 3, with a huge sole! Finally, I'm getting my grips changed to fit my hands. Not enough people take grip size into account. Cheers!
Always great content, glad I found your channel.
I carried Cleveland Smart Sole 2, both chipper and sand wedge. I used them to help with learning swing speed for distance control and bunker shots. I slowly transitioned into my Hi Toe wedges. Currently carry M6 10.5 set 1 up, M6 d-type 5w, MCGB 4 hybrid, GAPR Hi 6 hybrid, M1 6-9, M1 55 sw, Hi Toe 50 and 60 and Odyssey Jailbird Mini.
I am glad you found it too Joe
Great video. Like the idea of a cbx in my 50* as essentially that is a 100 yard club and if its going straighter thats a bonus!!
What you are saying makes a lot of sense
And definitely would help more golfers that can get past their egos and embrace reality 😊
You have definitely become one of my favorite
RUclips golf Club testers .keep up the good job and the common sense 👍🏻
Thank you Travis
I carry a chipper and love it,also just ordered a one length cobra hybrid to replace my 5 iron. Keep up the good work average golfer 👍🏻
Good luck and thxs
Chippers are great,,and you will like the versatility of a 5 hybrid.
Love this one Andy. Course vlog please.
I am thinking of a 5h for next year. And I'm using Ping Eye 2+ wedges😎
I might have to try the Cleveland CBX2 wedges. Great idea!
I bought a chipper after watching your video. Played it last weekend. Fanfreakingtastic
Another interesting and well produced video Andy. My bag has in it pretty much what you suggested in your opening comments. My 21 degree rescue/utility club is really useful when I need to escape from the semi rough but fear my 4 iron will get snagged. I do have 3 wedges in my bag too. Keep them coming buddy!
Cheers Dave hope you are well!
Remember that my first decent branded irons I got were the Nike CPR irons. Could never really get on with the semi hybrid long irons, and very quickly bought a traditional irons. When I played a lot I never looked back.
As far as putters are concerned couldn’t get on with those oversized headed putters, much preferring a traditional bladed putter.
Like the idea of the small headed, short shafted driver. As always loved the shallow headed 3 wood and the 3 wood length of shaft would probably have provided more control.
I am glad however that when I played a lot I kept with a more traditional bag setup.
These days as I return to the game, a fair few years later, now suffering with quite bad Arthritis, I am finding my really nice steel shafted irons are putting too much stress on my wrists and elbows. So an instant change over to graphite shafted irons are going to be in order, possibly going over to a more cushioned grip on them.
The next few months might be interesting 🤔 as there is the possibility that what just could not get myself to like all those years ago may with this dammed arthritis be a necessity.
Great message to customize your set to your strengths and weaknesses rather than forcing yourself to carry a traditional set of clubs. I've got a unique setup that works great for me, and I try almost as many clubs as you do 😜. Putting the "perfect" bag together is a huge part of the fun for me! WIMB:
Ping G400 Max Driver stiff flex
Cobra F9 3/4 Wood with the 5 wood regular flex shaft set to 4W loft
Cobra F9 7/8 Wood with the 5 wood stiff flex shaft set to 7W loft
4 and 5 Cleveland Mashie hybrids. Still haven't found anything better for the truly terrible lies, but I keep trying them all.
6-SW Single length Sterling Irons 37" shafts
58 Cleveland Smart Sole 3.0 with a 37" shaft to match the length of my irons. Super heavy and almost eliminates the ability to decelerate the club.
Putter - Ping Sigma G Tynes. Looking to finally get fitted for one this year.
Keep up the great content. You've got a new subscriber.
Best video I've seen in ages. Srixon 585 irons A wedge to 5 iron, on order 5&4 mizuno fli hi, titleist 3&driver (( need to replace )) and one old Adams pro hybrid 19 degree. Thanks for your efforts.
Thank you Jeremy
I play driver 5 wood 17 degree hybrid when I take my 5 wood out have 3-pw Cobra CB/mb irons 50,54,58 wedges and Taylor made spider putter
Great videos good content
Bag wise Driver; 4w; 19 & 23 hybrids; HMB 5-PW; 50;54;58 T20 wedges. Cycle through 4/5 different putters from heel shafted to blade to mallets with different lengths subject to how confident I am feeling. TM Spider Tour Red 35” has been in the bag for the last couple of seasons......but I am liking the look of the new Odyssey No.Ten!
I’m with you in concept, except for the chipper. 5 wood jettisoned last season. I keep a 3 wood for tight drives and sitting up in semi rough.i now only use hybrids off the fairway instead of fairway wood as I’ve realised those attempts at getting close to par 5s with a 3 wood are fraught with danger and I hit a 3 hybrid more consistently and almost as far. Need to swap out my 5 iron for a higher lofted hybrid.
The handicap is coming down a couple of shots next season 😂. More practice may help
CBX wedges are the best wedges I've used - I play off 10 and just find them more playable than the multitude of different ones I've used in the past.
Andy, you’re gonna have to do a course vlog to convince me!
I would love this set up
Totally agree, increased loft and shorter shafts = more control and more consistency, yet another great Vlog
Thank you Nigel
I can agree with everything you said. I am super interested in trying the CBX2 wedges. I struggle with distance control with my wedges so I'm hoping those can help. When I comes to a putter I had a small mallet and just switched to a heal toe balance because I was more consistent with the blade putter from 8 feet and in. I felt like I could just point and shoot and with the putter I dont want forgiveness. I want to know what I am doing wrong so I can fix it.
Great video, I am gaming 4 CBX wedges60,56,52,48 and 3 UHX irons 9,8,7 and hybrids 6,5,4,3. 5 wood and driver👍🏻✌🏻
Sounds like a great set up
I carry a cbx 50 and 54. Love them. Also carry callaway sure out 58 which is very forgiving 👍
Cracking wedges
I have Driver, 4 wood, 19 hybrid, Srixon u85 4 iron, 5-pw, 50, 54, 60 wedges, and putter. This gives me good gapping throughout the bag.
I've played my best golf in years with a half set, sometimes odds sometimes evens. Fiddled about mini driver driver, 3wd, 3hyb, and 4 wd, PW and 56 Deg. Odyssey putter.
New clubs next year but I might just go 6-PW
I agree, too many golfers seem to play what they think they should rather than what actually helps their game.
I play off 21 and my bag contains
A Ping G series driver
A TeeLess driver (13)
Cobra F8 5 wood
Ping G400 7 wood
Ping G410 5 and 6 hybrids
Cleveland HB Launcher hybrid irons 6-PW
I change my wedges in and out regularly but it will be two of Cleveland Smart Sole, Cleveland CBX, or Ping Glide 3 (either 50 & 56 or 52 & 58)
Taylormade Spider putter
The driver can come out to make room for a spare club - as my TeeLess is only 10 yards shorter, but very rarely goes into the trees!
I'd say I have a standard bag. 4 through to SW + 60 degree. 9 degree driver and a 19 degree hybrid. I do however have a 14 degree Mini Driver that I use as my fairway as well as off the tee if the driver is having an off day and on a couple of holes at home where if I don't shape the driver it goes long in to trouble. Oh and a putter that I got in 1996 that I still love.
Great Video Andy!
Thanks, improved in 3 years!
I play 3 wood ,4 hybrid 7,8,9, PW SW and putter! All of these are relatively easy to hit and I can be confident with them .
Will this be forever no? but it works reasonably well at the moment .
Would have room for a chipper that's a very good suggestion .The Mini driver is intriguing -someday !
I traded in my 3 mill grind wedges for my new 56* CBX2 wedge. I don’t have to think about which wedge to use anymore. I can make every shot around the green from 60 in. The TM wedges were great but I’ve simplified my bag by only carrying 12 clubs.
Currently gaming a reduced amount of clubs and love it. Driver with 2 inch shorter shaft, Hybrid with 2 inch longer shaft, 6,8,PW,SW & Putter
Great Video! Great thought about going from GI iron to Bladed wedge. Makes a lot of sense!
My set up:
Driver- Nike Vapor Speed
3 wood - Nike Vapor Speed
Hybrid 3 - Nike Covert 20 degree
Hybrid 4 - Mizuno JPX 850 22 degree
Irons 5-PW - Sub 70 699s
Wedges 50,54,58 - New Level M
Putter - Scotty Cameron GoLo 5
Thanks Chad
Would be interested if you played 10 rounds with the “game improvement” bag and reviewed your stats to see how things changed. I moved to MB/CB combo from CB’s a couple of years ago as an experiment and I found that overall my scoring did not vary too much but my GIR stats went up. Have since moved to HMB’s 5-PW for some the additional yardage higher ball flight while maintaining consistent distance control. Looking forward to getting a season in and seeing how the stats hopefully improve along with the handicap!
Think that’s the way to go,none of us are getting any younger and golf don’t get easier as you advance in age, keep up this theme Andy it’s great
Thxs GAry
Andy - another great video and one that should hopefully convince basically every golfer out there to stop thinking a PGA Tour Pro's bag is remotely a good idea for anyone who doesn't have a 120mph Driver swing speed and a plus handicap. I'm actually, at least for a few more years, on the faster Average Golfer swing speed (107mph Driver swing speed) and also lower handicap (5) than the vast majority of Average Golfers out there and over the last year I've made a HUGE change to my bag construction to help me improve my game (came from an 11 handicap to 5 this year) and I 100% believe fully in the approach of this video.
Here is my bag as a 5 Handicap:
Game Improvement Irons - Mizuno Hot Metal Pros bent somewhat weaker (PW to 6 iron)
- PW - 47 degrees
- 9 iron - 42 degrees
- 8 iron - 37 degrees
- 7 iron - 32 degrees
- 6 iron - 27 degrees (this would be the loft of a traditional 5 iron blade)
- 5 hybrid - Taylormade Gapr Hi playing open at 24 degrees (traditional 4 iron blade) and cut down 3/4"
- 4 hybrid - Taylormade Gapr Hi playing open at 21 degrees (traditional 3 iron blade) and cut down 3/4"
- 5 wood at 18 degrees cut down 1/2" to 42" length
- 3 wood at 14.5 degrees cut down 1" to 42.5 length
- Driver
For wedges, I spent an enormous amount of time this year, finding the right bounce for me to give me 'lots' of bounce to give me confidence chipping and pitching and in each and every wedge that finally ended in my bag, I added more bounce by bending each club weaker - thus my wedges:
- Mizuno 919 50 degree wedge bent to 52 degrees - this may be the greatest greenside chipping club I've ever used - awesome bounce gives you so much confidence
- Mizuno S18 56 degree bent weaker to 57 degrees - it has heal and toe relief and it great out of the sand and is my goto 100 yard club +/- 10 yards
- Mizuno T20 60/10 club bent weaker to 62/12 - the bounce and shape of the bounce at 12 is incredible and has probably saved me from an insane asylum having had the yips (it's my Bigfoot)
I can confidently say, that my 11 to 5 handicap journey this year is 75% because I embraced the approach of this video completely and worked to find clubs that made me a better golfer - and then used this approach to find further improvements in my game. My last 2 rounds of the year were 72 and 74 with the 72 being 3 under Par at the turn.
I would love to see some videos of you playing with this bag to see how and why you find it both helpful and also not.
All the best
Paul
Great feedback as ever Paul and congrats on a fantastic year, interesting that you put some of that down to your change in approach to club set up. Keep up the good work!
I've bought myself the cbx2 in 52 and 56 and have the Bigfoot 60 so that's my wedges sorted for the foreseeable future! I'm back in the UK in May so will be booking a fitting for the Wilson d7 and launchpad ranges to see which work best for me but unless something surprising shows up in the fitting I think I'll be going with the d7 irons and the launchpad driver, 3 wood and fybrid. Quite tempted to throw in a 5 and 6 launcher halo hybrid from Cleveland or mizuno fli hi to replace the 5 and 6 irons too
Got the wedges spot on!
Great video. You should really look at your ball too. What works best for you? Some balls might be to "spinny" or whatever. Thanks Andy.
Another excellent video to muse over, My bag is fairly standard Driver, 3 & 7 woods, 3 Hybrid 5 - SW and putter. I like the idea of a 7 and possibly a 9 hybrid to replace 5 and maybe 6 irons
Appreciated thxs
Most of my golf buddies carry many hybrids and fairway woods. Only a few carry anything longer than a 5 iron anymore. My longest iron is a 7 iron and I am thinking about a hybrid for that.
It seems to be moving that way
@@TheAverageGolfer I also think that if you only carried the clubs you really hit well, you would play better and faster!!
My bag is now D, 3W(16°), 20°h, 23°h, 27°h, 7i, 8i, 9i, PW, 46°, 50° 56° and a 60° that I only use out of tight bunkers. I came down from 21 to 16 in a few months with this set up.
Very useful video. If budget is an issue what mini driver would you recommend. Thks.
I play Driver (cut by 1"), 5W, 3 and 4 Hybrid, 6i, 8i (single length), PW, SW, LW and putter
I just like your videos :) 63 y playing of 13 !! playing senior graphit shaft Driver+ 3w 16dgr, 5w 19dgr 4h 22dgr 5h 25dgr iron 5-G+S, lob 60dgr thats it
Putter
Driver
5 wood which replaced my 22* hybrid
5-PW
50*, 54* and 60* (bladed wedges)
All custom fitted and did gapping so know the distances throughout my bag, carry and total distances.
Your on it Jonathan
My weakness is tee shots, so I carry two Drivers; one for fade ( 44.5 inch Nike Vapor Speed 10.5) , one for draw ( 45.5 inch Cleveland HB Launcher Turbo 12).
Then a F9 4 wood ( @17 degree) so I can get the ball off the ground
Cobra single length Hybrids 19,22,25 degrees ( 3,4,5 iron replacements) for more accurate longer shots, easy to hit and good in rough lies. The SL hybrids are also good for rolling long shots onto a green if the verge is smooth.
Single length irons from Milford Golf in Oz. 6-LW ( 60 /04 for hard summer lies) , but in winter I use Cleveland CBX2 ( 56/12 and 60/10 for softer conditions).
As you can see I am a fan of single length. Why make golf harder? The same swing from 70-130 m makes it easier for me to hit greens.
Recently I have tried a Wilson Harmonized chipper ( took 6 iron out) . I am on the fence with this idea, whether I am getting closer from shorter chips around the green? I don't like it from further out 30m plus/ too hard to judge distance/ excessive roll through.
I have also stopped using 2 Drivers, possibly because I have improved my swing, but if the course is tight and tree lined the shorter shafted Nike Driver goes in the bag.
TS2 driver, 5 wood TS2 head with 3 wood shaft. 4 and 5 titleist 816 H2 hybrids. 6/7 Mizuno HM, 8/GW HMP, 54, 58 vokeys. and 60degree low bounce (hard sand traps ). Scotty putter
Cobra f9 driver, F7 3w and 5w, 4h, MX20 5-pw, Cleveland RTX 3 52, 58 + Left handed Fisher putter to counter jips I have on right handed putting
I’m Driver (10.5), 3wood, 3 hybrid, 4-PW, Wedges - 52/56/60, blade putter. Thinking of dropping the 3 wood an hybrid and replacing with a 5 wood, mainly because I’m struggling to hit both of them. Oh and I play off 26 handicap.
I think you should get some Team Average testers on the course. Give them this setup and ask them to play 3 holes. See how they fair and if they would be tempted to tinker with their current setup after playing with that set. Could be a good series of videos.
Its difficult to get all the clubs together or would be perfect, hopefully as channel grows may get some more options
Thanks, Andy for another thought-provoking video. I have a slightly different set-up to the norm;
Driver 9.5deg
Offset 3Wood
19deg hybrid
22deg hybrid
Irons 6-PW
Gap Wedge
Sandwedge
Putter
Which gives me 13 clubs and I then either put in a 5 Iron or a Lob wedge dependant upon the type of course that I am playing
Youve got it sorted!
@@TheAverageGolfer Yep equipment is all sorted but unfortunately, it's still the same duffer on the end of the clubs lol
Taylormade R-15 _ 12 degree driver (loft adjusted down -1.5)
Taylormade R-15 _ 5 wood (loft adjusted down 1)
Taylormade R-15 _ 4 hybrid (standard loft)
Mizuno T-zoid Pro II irons_ 3,5,6,7,8,9,P
Mizuno MP-T5 wedges _ 50,56,60
Nike Method Midnight 900 PM 303 putter
Quite honestly, I put the Mizuno Pro II irons in my bag in an attempt to become a better golfer. I found that I concentrate more and get better feedback from the club than I was getting with the large cavity back clubs I had previously. I know, "Pro II's? Aren't they about 20 years old?". Yep. Bought them site unseen on ebay two years ago and LOVE them. They had to have been refinished because they look brand new! Its kind of funny, though, when I pull one out of the bag I get comments. . . mostly saying "my dad used to have a set of these!"
Jumping from the driver down to a 5 wood was also a good move. I find that I'm knocking my 5 wood almost as far as my driver just because of how much more confidence I have in it.
My "vanity club" is the putter. I just love the look of that Nike midnight putter. Honestly, I'd probably do better with a larger mallet style putter, but that blade style putter is too damn sexy.
So, what I've found is that I rarely use the 50 or 60 wedges. I picked up the 56 and just got good with it, and use it for pretty much every shot inside of 70 yards. I use the 3 iron for punching out from under trees (sadly, I've gotten a lot of practice at that). Really, the only club that I may need to rethink is the putter.
Great video, by the way! Rethinking what was in my bag helped my game quite a bit!
For me, Driver, 5 & 7 Woods, 5 Hybrid, 6-9 Irons, 4 Wedges and Putter.
I run the exact same setup minus the 7 wood. Really all I need and I'll never find myself missing a club.
60 yo senior 13 hdcp low ball hitter with mid 80’s SS with driver, I’m currently gaming Callaway GBB Fusion 11.5 driver, 3 wood, 7 wood. Have old 2008 TM Burner Rescue 4, 5, & 6. Currently playing Maxfli Revolution Midsize irons (very weak lofts, pw is 48) 6-pw, 54 & 58 wedge MD4’s. Tried newer stuff all the way up to 2019, but the new drivers don’t give me much more distance and newer hybrids don’t give me the height. The Fusion woods are light and easy to get in the air. The hybrids give me plenty of height to stop on greens from 145 to 180 away. The irons with the weaker lofts have me hitting the ball straighter and more solid. Only 2 wedges, but I have always been able to manipulate wedges to different distances and lies. Tried a TM Spider before, it felt too light and I play slow greens. Just got a new Odyssey Stroke Lab Ten S, loving it. Might try the CBX 2 wedges soon. Thanks 😊 Andy.
Hcp 9, D 5w 3-pw 50 56 60 p
Used to have a 3h but found it went way too high. Prefer my longer irons to have a lower ball flight. Tbh the 3i is only used on summer as it runs for miles. Definitely agree though that's lots of people have 4i who can't hit them. The main thing is as long as you can hit the clubs consistently, know your yardages and the gaps aren't too bad. Pointless having a 4i that when you hit it well that 1/20 it goes 210y but the rest of the time you duff it 50 yards.
For me my normal bag.
Driver: 10.5° 3 wood shaft.
Fairway Woods: 5 18.5° and 7 22°.
Irons: 5 to GW HB launchers, so more hybrid that iron.
Wedge: 58° pm grind.
Chipper: Cleveland Smart Sole.
Putter: Cleveland #6
My bag does have the following changes if I'm playing a longer wider course than my normal course.
Driver 10.5° full length shaft.
Fairway Woods 17.5° 5 wood head on 3 wood shaft and 20° 5 wood.
Chipper comes out and 52° Mac Daddy forged goes in.
1) Driver: Ping G410 (custom fitted) 12 deg 44" 65 g Ping Tour (R); 3W - Cobra F9; 4H - Cobra F9 Std; 5H Cobra F9 Std; Utl Iron - Cobra King 3-4 True Temper AMT White (R); 6 - SW Cobra F9 One Length; Cleveland Smart Sole S (58); Odyssey 40" Tank Versa two-ball.
Nice set up Julia, you happy with it?
- 9.5 driver - m2 driver
- 15 fairway - cobra f8
- 19 5 wood Nike vapor fly or 18 hybrid
- 4 iron callaway apex UT or 22 hybrid
- 5-pW Ben hogan ptx recoil shafts
- 52 Nike VRS
- 56 Ping anser forged
- 60 callaway pm grind
Love the multi-hybrid route; thinking of getting Cobra T-Rails
I will hopefully try them soon
@@TheAverageGolfer Would like to see this soon. Have tried a 7 iron at a demo day and really liked it, but whether it would make me a better player I'm not so sure.
Driver, 4 wood, 3h, 4h, 5-PW, 52 and 56, putter. Hardest club to hit is the 5 iron and quite a big distance gap to the hybrid, maybe I need these modern strong lofted irons
I'm not sold on the mini drivers. Much easier (and cheaper) to take a bit of length off your driver shaft. Take an inch off and try it. You can take up to 2 inches if necessary. If the worst comes to the worst you can extend it back to the original length with a shaft extender.
Very good stuff here - tradition is a pain ! This is even worse for me as a high handicapper !
Will be changing soon to a more manageable set -hybrid irons etc ?
With you all the way Andy.
I'm looking at D, 18° FW, 22° R, 5i, 6i, 7i, 8i, 9i, PW, 50° GW, 55° SW, 58 or 60 °LW Putter .
And even considering a 25° R in.place of the 5i!
Nice set up Richard
For me: Driver, 3, 5 fw woods, 20* 23* 26* hybrids, 6-9 irons, 3 wedges and putter. Works for this sr golfer.
Sounds good
Good stuff!
I have a driver with half inch shorter shaft, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 6 iron to 10, 52 56 and 60 Cleveland RBX wedges black, a chipper, a Cleveland Huntington Beach 6 small mallet putter with Winn Jumbo grip.
I carry a 17 degree 4 wood, 25 degree hybrid and 27 degree to 47 degrees 7 iron to gap wedge and putter. I play this because every club is easy to hit...weekend golfer... Cheer's
This is definitely the sort of bag I'm building towards. I won't carry a club if I can't hit it well, often enough.
Good point
Your bag sounds similar to mine in that I also have hybrids down to 7 and I love them. I do have a "proper" driver, but wold love to try a mini like yours. Being a lefty though, it's hard to find one. I have a chipper, but it's not in my bag at the moment. My 8 iron does the job pretty well.
Left handed golfers are so limited by availability of products
@@TheAverageGolfer You're not kidding. How would you like to buy a putter when you have a choice of one!? Even club pros won't order stuff in without a firm commitment to buy. I tried to order a big foot wedge. Guess what? Not available in left hand.
You've upset any WRXers who may watch your videos, Andy. Chipper? Seven hybrid? Oh, my! My bag: Mini-driver (14*), 7W (20*), one length irons 5I through GW (23.5*--50*), Cleveland 2011 Niblicks (42*, 56*), and putter. Walking set: Mini-driver, 3H, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, LW, putter in a Sunday bag. BTW, I often score better, and never worse, with the half-set.
I currently play 13 clubs as I don't currently carry a 3 wood. I have Driver, 5W, 4H, 5-PW, 49W, 54W, 60W and putter. Currently weighing up if and what 14th club I might carry. Considering a right-handed 7-iron (I'm left-handed) for when I find myself unable to take my normal stance due to a tree or edge of a bunker.
Hitting driver OB and having poor short game skills is where the majority of bad golfers stokes come from. The long iron gets all the blame, but in reality long irons aren't even used very often. I've played everything from super game improvement irons to blades. The irons I happen to have in the bag have zero effect on my scores. Keeping my drive in bounds and not chunking chip shots does.
Driver, f8 7 Wood, f6 4 hybrid, 5 to pitching wedge Cleveland altitude hybrid irons, cleveland cbx 52, 56 and 60. Looking to get a 5 wood
Great vid some different and interesting clubs in there , Are you going to begaming these? Would like to see use out on course , myself

3 to sand wedge irons ( standard old school set
Struggling with putter so changed to large Cleveland rho satin putter saved loads of shots
Hope to try on course

Epic driver
Rogue 5 wood
X Hot 3-6 hybrids

CBX2 56° & 60°
Considering going to Big Bertha short irons (probably to 8 or 7) and hybrids next year.
Manufacturers should be offering combo sets with hybrids down to 7 or 8 with cavity backs down to gap wedge IMHO.
Sounds good Larry
I love my chipper, i dont care what others think it works for me. :-)
Good for you Alan!
Good point about the wedges. I would also say that your average golfer really only needs a PW and 56 degree. There's a hell of a lot of shots that can be played with the PW but most players use it like a 10-iron.
Yeah possibly
I must say that I have benefitted from a range of wedges ... have 44* PW, 50, 54 and 58 ... since I find can use the same swing for different yardage approaches. Takes another unreliable variable away (I.e. having to manipulate swing length).
For me Driver, 4 hybrid, 5 to SW set, 60* LW and putter. 11 clubs and I need to add a decent 4 or 5 wood. Otherwise the bag is good
I was "steered" towards the better wedges by my golf pro and just couldn't hit them with any consistency. Went back and ordered the game improvement wedges that match the set, results were so much better. Never turn your nose up to clubs that the pros don't play, they are designed for us average golfers.
Currently playing:
Driver-4wood-19H-23H-5-PW-50-54-58-Putter. Pretty happy with it. 5 handicap.
So you should Jacob
Good setup!
Did you have to adjust the swing weight on your 5 wood when shortening the shaft?
For me golf is not only about scoring. I would never play golf with this kind of set. Most satisfactory for me is hitting a long iron high and straight or with a slight draw.
I am 61 and carry 10,5 degree driver, 17 degree 4 wood and 22,5 degree 7-wood. 2-iron and then 4-iron up to 46 degree wedge. 52 and 58 degree wedges and putter.
And btw I really like your videos :)

Totally agree with you as far as long irons. I just couldn’t get on with the 3 & 4 off the floor, so they were just inanimate objects in the bag as I never used them. The hybrids are a lot easier to get up in the air and far more forgiving.
Are you happy with it William
The Average Golfer yes bud I am. I’ve come away from the 9* Driver as it’s not forgiving enough. I also don’t Use blades for my irons anymore as again, they’re too unforgiving. However I do like my wedges as I find the other wider flange wedges too cumbersome bud
@@William45ish Sounds like me!
Like it. The question might be if an average golfer is willing to go down to a 7 hybrid, why not strongly consider one of the big brands' full hybrid iron sets?
I tend to change my set up throughout the year. Don't need a lob wedge when the ground is this wet for example. Don't struggle up to five iron. My dead area is 3 iron only works from A1 lie or a tee and then I love it but cannot hold anything in the summer to hybrid which I can get a great flight on and play from the semi but about 25% are just horrible low hooks.
as long as it works!
@@TheAverageGolfer That is the problem it doesn't. Anything above about 180 yards that is not from a tee is hit and miss at best, especially from the semi.
Great video, pick the golf clubs that work for you. Loft is very forgiving. Not just for hitting the ball straight, but also further. Wedges, ping eye 2, sand wedge and pitching wedge. Driver, taylormade burner superfast 2 15 degrees. Also have 7 wood and 24 degree ping hybrid.
Thanks Alan and yes agreed
hi Andy, thank you very much for your reply. I forgot to say that my driver is a 3 wood with 43 inch shaft, enough for me! The new Taylormade big foot wedge looks a lot like my ping eye 2 wedges lol. Love your videos for telling the truth about golf, cheers.
@@alanclayton3970 I appreciate that Alan thxs
4 wood, 26* Hybrid, 6-P 60* wedge and putter all I need
Driver test for the very average golfer please. Cleveland HB Turbo please please
Driver, 5w (turned down so really a 4w), 3h, 4h 5i-PW, 50, 54 & 58 degree wedges. But I did have the driver shaft shortened to 44.5" - made a big difference in accuracy
I know you are on it Justin
I have exactly the same setup all the way down to 5W -1 and 44.5 driver lol. Great minds!
For Me : Driver, 3 wood, 20Hybrid, 24Hybrid 28Hybrid, irons 6-9, 3 wedges and a putter.
Sounds a similar set up
Just retired my 5w, 3i, and 4i for 2H and 4H. However, I can never see myself replacing 5i-7i with hybrids.
AStill lifting hands just before takeaway mate, why not try making the lst move just before takeaway by lowering your hands a bit?
